neil gallop- that was a funny-ass post u just threw up. if i am lucky enough
to be invited to the ball (and play on this thingy- yes, mojo; i'd like to
play some keys, or a little 7 string), i'd want you to be my guest
    ytsescreamer.

and you didn't play flesh billiards with derek. even better!!

but- you didn't play with tori......now THAT can be a problem!! ;-)

you see, i'm so funky, i get it on with her EVERY NIGHT!

hold your nuts til the recording session is over!

    pat daugherty;
finally found good genesis. awesome. "selling" is too good of an album. you
know, around the same time i 1st transcribed wfs, i also did the intro to
"firth of 5th". great piece. so's "moonlit knight."

too bad phil collins had to cheese us out when gabriel left. it's not even a
matter of selling stadiums. gabriel does it too, but his music is so much
more interesting!! and he has a too good band that i wish i was in! <<drool>>
genesis just has cheese in ite repertoire now. a shame, but oh well.....

neil peart gay, eh? YEAH, HUH?!?! whatever.

oddly, i had heard many times before that geddy is gay. of course, i also
question the veridity of that statement, but i can't tell people what to
    think......

maybe he's just a VERY HAPPY guy.

I just say what a great guy he is?!? He jammed on his kit a lot, took
time out to explain any drum parts that people might have a question
about, and commented on the new album...

They have 5 songs completed ("about 45 minutes of material") and intend
to put on about 5 more. "The album should be out late summer/early
fall." Something to look forward to!

    hey all:

here's my thoughts on DT going mainstream.

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think (IMO) that would be the downfall of Dream Theater. are they not doing
fine right now? in know awake at least went platinum, and the next album will
probably do the same. i sincerely hope that DT isn't 'discovered' by a record
exec that is looking for a 'fresh sound'. progressive rock has always been,
and always should be, 'underground' music.

my worst nightmare would come true if copy-cat bands were to form in the
progressive genre. well, i can't imagine anyone trying to copy DT. you may
be able to learn their songs, but try writing a piece on the same level as
    metropolis. (yeah, right)

anyway, i don't think mainstream society is ready for progressive music, and
it never will be. i say this because of what people are listening to.
(pop-country, rap, pop, sh*t, cheezy sh*t, etc.) these people aren't ready to
hear lyrics with the depth of 'voices', or 'uagm', or whatever. there's no
sense singling out any song, all of them are 'deep'.

anyway, i think i'm starting to ramble, so i'll shut up now. but think about
it. do you really want progressive music to become a highly profitable,
materialistic, sold-out, overplayed form of music? i hope not. because
that's what will happen if it goes 'mainstream'.

    Sadly, I must agree.

It seems the only bands that seem to survive for a long time without too
many line-up changes are those with a family (or something almost as close)
connection. Example: Van Halen. They've only had on line up change since
1976 and it doesn't look like it'll ever happen again.

    Just my thoughts,
    Lugie.

I was arguing that when people say things like this that they are considering
his normal (non-falsetto) range to be 6 octaves. Whereas I argue that a range
like that would include both the normal and falsetto voice. After I got my
brain back in my head I realized that NO human being possesses a 6 octave
range! I grossly miscalculated my own, which is actually only about 3 1/2
    octaves.

Can I be the first to suggest that we stop talking about stopping talking about

Let's get back to the jam of old where we talk about the goofy lyric misinterp-

To all you guys screaming about the te of the jam, let me bring forth this
thought. Has anybody considered that there really is not any new DT
information coming through? We've beaten the songs to death in analysis, all
the members have been put in every scenario in the world, we've done enough
polls to kill people with. I mean, the only thing left is to discuss other
bands that might be related to DT, like Meagellan and Magna Carta bands, and
whatever prog or metal bands are actually doing something. Also, personal
inside ytsejokes abound here, which I find seomwhat humorous. so, to all of
you frustrated with the jam at its state, wait until something new comes out,
like an album or a piece of news and you'll see great DT content again. Do
what I do. Change to ack mode, (mail ytsejam-request@ax.com, subject asdf
message set ytsejam mail ack) and delete whatever is not interesting to you.
There is no difference in the mail, whether it's in one big chunk of 50 small
chunks. Anyway, the preference is yours.

ON a semirelated topic, I want to recommend any Magna Carta releases to
Jammers. Being a DJ on a college radio station with a prog rock show, I made
a contact at Magna Carta and they sent me everything they could send me. I
love everything. I am still waiting for Shadow Gallery, but everything else
is soooooo good that I almost don't mind. And I am sure that Shadow Galery
will be awesome as well. The three truibute CDs, (Yes, Genesis and Pink
Floyd) are fine as well. Anyone in the Monmouth county area of NJ should
consider listening to 88.9 FM on Sat. 12:00-3:00 p.m. That's the prog rock
show. YOu will like it. L8r, all.

    Pat:

There are a few other Genesis albums that are progressive after Peter Gabriel
    left.

Tric of the Tale: the first album with Collins on vocals. Quite progressive.
Pay attention to Dancing on a Volcano.
Wind and Wuthering: The last Steve Hacket album with Genesis.
Seconds out: Live album after Trick of the Tale album, I think.
And then there were three: Seems progressive to me, watch for Follow you,
Follow me. the start of what some call Genesis's downfall.
Duke: Not as progressive in my mind, but Turn it on Again is on it.
ABACAB and Genesis: Not as progressive as the others, but still some great
tunes on it as well as some poppy ones.

Invisible touch and We can't dance are very poppy, maybe a very few
    progressive elements to it.
Three sides live: another live album after ABACAB, I think.

Mind you, I am not a Genesis expert. Theories abound as to what made Genesis
go pop. Most blame OPhil Collins. I think it cam about After Steve Hacket's
departure. Hacket is what made the band progressive, from what I have heard.
I like all their stuff that I have heard so far, (have yet to pick up some
Gabriel albums). That's what I know.

Oh really....what about RUSH, The Rolling Stones, U2...etc? I think that
it might have more to do with maturity. It was Kevin's choice to leave the
band...and James was a definite improvement. So far, Dream Theater has
made changes that are for the better IMHO. Kevin wouldn't have been happy
locked into the band....and he wouldn't have put his best effort into the
music. One of the reasons why I enjoy Dream Theater is that they seem to
be mature adults. They aren't adolescent in their subject matter nor their
style...and I'll assume that they treat each other with respect. Because of
this, I think that they might just be around for many years to come.

    Hey Andrew....
I *think* that you are referring to some of the 10 years down the line
posts. Do you consider RUSH mainstream? How about Yes? I think what
people are trying to get across is that they hope Dream Theater will get
more airplay, gain more respect, and ascend to their rightful place in the
pantheon of musical greats. Progressive rock bands rarely "sell out and go
mainstream" as you said. If they do, they give up their claim to being a
"Progressive" band. By the ammount of posts that read along the lines, "If
only I had ONE other person here at (insert college of choice) that I could
talk to about Dream Theater and who actually knows what the hell I am
    talking about....sigh", I think I detect a longing for a wider
appreciation of progressive metal in general and Dream Theater
specifically. Do you remember where RUSH was right before Moving Pictures
came out? Well....I think Dream Theater is at that point right now.
Although I haven't been all that enthusiastic about RUSH's last few
    releases...I don't think they've ever sold out. SOOOO....Rest easy, I
don't think you're going to have to worry about that....:)

"and I'd like to hear JM play a Stick."

"Thunk bonk, biffa biffa *crack* oops." I used to play with sticks when I
was young. Then I moved on to rocks.

I have a subconscious for sale. It's 23 years old, prone to diversions when
not needed, creates weird dreams, and has a hard time relinguishing control
to the conscious mind in the morning. cheap.

And I don't believe Derek is gay, nor is Neil Peart. Now, as we all know,
Lars of Metallica is gay... (JOKE!!!!)

And I disagree with Pat about wanting the new FW CD split into tracks. If
it's one long song, let it be one long song. I like the fact that the CD
version of Thick as a Brick is one long track. Of course, if it skips in
the car and the cd resets, oh shit. ;)

And I'd be interested in partaking of the tribute, but I don't have time. :(
Also, I doubt other people would be as interested in a full-on MIDI keyboard
only version of a DT song? :) (maybe SDV...)
