Yes, I was once a moronic dumbassed idiot (and sometimes still am for

This opinion sounds exactly like that of anyone who is into an "alternative"
style purely because others don't listen to it. It seems you want to be
able to say "I listen this, you don't, that makes me original and different."

What is wrong with progressive becoming profitable etc? If it becomes more
widely recognized then that is a GOOD thing because it means more people
will be exposed to better quality music. There is a place for Green Day etc
in the industry and I enjoy dancing/moshing etc to Offspring at a nightclub
as much as the next guy, yet I still feel it would be good to have more
bands spending more time developing more "advanced" music and the fastest
way for this to happen would be for prog to become more mainstream (read
    "mainstream" as widely accepted).

Do you play DT to your friends? I certainly do and as a result there are
now another group of fans that DT would not have otherwise had (I probably
wouldn't have heard them if a friend hadn't lend me I&W a couple of years
ago). This is another 10 or so albums sold, that little bit extra to help
keep the record company happy and supporting DT in their quest for creating
    good music.

Do we all agree that it takes intellegence to appreciate Dream
Theater's music? If so, and it does go mainstream, maybe it will make the
general population more intelligent. It is also true that some people take
up instruments because they want to be able to play what they hear on the
radio and MTV. If DT goes mainstream, people will start taking up guitar or
whatever because they want to play DT stuff...if they have the
willpower/skill, then there will be a buttload of talented musicians and
I'll finally have someone to be in my as-of-yet-nonexistent band!

    >my worst nightmare would come true if copy-cat bands were to form in the

Well, we consider DT progressive, and progressive means changing, so DT will
change, and by the time somebody copies them they will be different. So
it's kinda like a big musical game of tag...except it hasn't happened yet,
so I'm predicting the future...or something.

    Hello Jammers,

Someone just posted about DT becoming mainstream and how awful it
would be. I'd like to say that DT is already having a great influence on
the survivors of heavy metal and new metal artists, keyboards are abound
in some of the German Metal groups, there are prog-metal bands (Shadow
Gallery, Threshold, Inferno (hello Jay, got to mail you and get an
update), Ivanhoe, Superior, Process, Braindance) that have a great deal
of Dream Theater influence. I always get into a conversation with at
least one person about Dream Theater at every concert I attend (I proudly
wear my Ytsejam shirt - Jason Giles, YOU are the MAN!) - generally, not
the jazz-fusion concerts. They will probably get as big as Rush
eventually, but not bigger. I really don't have a hope that prog will
make it into the mainstream, though the mainstream is becoming less
decisive since everyone is releasing their own CDs and self promoting. I
could see Dream Theater, Discipline, Timothy Pure, 23rd Hour getting
airplay (the later bands are very prog musically but have vocalists that
would fit into today's radio play). E-mail me with questions on these
bands if you have any, all the ones I mentioned are quite good, and I
have their albums, might be time to do a Ytsejam Unsigned Bands tape, I
scrapped the idea last use due to the semester starting, but I might have
time to pull it off now. I'll post more info if I decide to do this.

    Later,

Don't ask me where I got this...from LSoaD

            "Lifting shadows of her dress..."

Also, and this was rather depressing for me. I was looking through
all my CD inserts checking out lyrics and pictures and all that good stuff
only to discover that Mr. Kevin Moore was the lyricist behind my two favorite
songs. I had not noticed this before, but it was rather depressing. Don't
get me wrong, DT kicks ass without him, too, but it'll take me a while to
    recover from this one :(
(songs were Space-Dye Vest and Pull Me Under of course)

And another thing, which I'm sure has been debated before. Is there
a general consensus as to which DT song is tops among the ytsejammers? Not
just a particular version of a song, but a SONG. I'd throw my two cents in
but I hate to beat a dead horse. Oh, wait a minute...Derek is gay, Peart
is gay, How do you pronounce Laussade, etc etc etc... Guess I wouldn't be
    doing anything new, would I?

May we beat dead horses no longer...

    Hi all,
I won't mention that this is my first post to the new jam.
Anyway, I just got through #1300 and have two quick comments. Sorry I
    don't remember either name.
To the guy who had a Tom Servo quote in his .sig, I know this is picky
but the correct spelling is "wacka jawacka" and it is a reference to the
Zappa tune of the same name. Had to jump on it because MST3K and Frank
Zappa are two of my favorite things.
The guy who was getting into Genesis:
I highly recommend the Album "Duke." I bought it because it's the one
with "Turn it on Again" and it has since become one of my most frequently
played discs. It has Phil Colins on vocals but is still very progressive.
Fast Dream Theater content: I am a Music Technology student at NYU. A
few weeks ago my recording tech Professor gave us a tape analyze the
production of. He made it himself (on his $5000 Nakamichi machine) and
one of the songs on it was "6:00"!. He then told us that he knew the boys
and had done some work on their first album. Hows that for a cool
    teacher?
    Later,
     -Dan (dlg3441@is2.nyu.edu)

He is. You won't see Mike ever writing a lyric like "I can't pretend
            a stanger is a long-awaited friend."

Recently some jammers have made some ridiculous statements, many
of which I will not comment on. Brian wrote that John Myung is not
Korean; True in the fact that he was born in the U.S. ,but both his
parents are Korean. Hell Kenny Myung tells me of his fathers trips to
Korea all the time. If that does not make him Korean then I'll eat my
shoes. Another thing, I know it was a few days ago but, I must agree
with the Mojoman. Tori Amos sucks!!!! I was forced to listen to her
newest album by my girlfriend. I then forced her to listen to I&W.
She was a great deal more impressed than I was. What is this about
catching a little sneeze. PAAATTHHHEEETTIICCC!!!!!!!. By the way the
Piano bench Dildo was my idea, the mojoman stole it from me.

Debbie Vestal must be one of the coolest girls on the face of the
planet. It's scary how much her opinions agree with mine. ( Thanks
for the suggestions for the book )

Has anyone out there ever heard of a band called POWERMAD. They
released an album in 90'. It is prog metal that is a little heavier
than DT. The album was called " Absolute Power " Pick it up if you
can or E-Mail me and I'll send you a tape.

Funny story. When DT played at Sundance here on LI during the
WDADU tour my friend and I went to see them. His older brother was
the drummer for Centurion, John P and Kevin's first band together.
Well to make a long story even longer, my friends car broke down and
we hitched a ride home with John Petrucci. As we pulled into Kings
Park the sun was rising. James looks at John and said " Hey John
look! When dream and day unite". We almost had to walk the rest of
the way home until we agreed to by John bagels at the local shop.
    This really happened.

Well I got my WDATU last Friday. The first thing that grabbed me by the
throat was the line from "Light Fuse," where the vocals start to soar,
"Stop your hands from shaking, look at me!" Hearing LaBrie sing this line
really cemented the lingering idea that his voice is just in a different
    league than Dominici's...a SUPERIOR league.

It was a pleasure hearing LaBrie sing this one and "To Set The Sun"
because I had never heard him sing either of them, and also because,
regardless of the sometimes-crackly recording quality, the vocal tracks on
both songs were infinitely better than the ones on the album. ;)

I'm still wondering why the last song on the cd, an instrumental known for
years as "Barfbag," is suddenly called "Showdown." Did DT rename the song,
or did Mike Bahr decide to rename it? And was Mike freestyling some poetry
reminiscent of the "To Live Forever" lyrics in the liner notes?

Regardless of names, my favorite track on the disc is the last one. That
funky, schizophrenic instrumental, whatever its proper name is.

As for progressive music and whether it will ever catch on... Were any of
you alive and conscious in 1984? Do you remember Prince Marky-D rapping
about "All You Can Eat" and other such gluttonies? Rap at that time was
considered by many as little more than a joke, no one thought it would be
around in five years. Weeelllll... Here we are in 1996, and it's still
here sans The Fat Boys. And not only did rap catch on, but it caught on
strong, and over a decade later that form of music has come nowhere near
    dying out.

Yeah yeah, maybe you hate rap and you don't know who could possibly listen
to it, but obviously the audience exists, and has for the last 17 or so
years. The same can be said of progressive music from the mouth of someone
at Lolapalooza, that prog sucks or whatever. But it's still there. I mean,
hasn't anyone noticed the recent resurgence of quick licks and double-bass
frenzies a la Helmet and Korn? Technical soliloquys and flourishes are
peeking in from that window...yes THAT window. The filthy one that no one
ever washes because it's so complicated that most people don't understand
it or pay any attention to it...but a little light still shines through...

And speaking of the drummer getting wicked, when IS Portnoy gonna start
his solo with, "Well we're DT the progressive band, we'd like to say
hello, a-to the ska, the country, the reggae, the death, the acid and
    techno."

Has anyone spotted an Acoustic Dreams #341 laying under a pile of laundry
    somewhere?

    they played also Metallica's song.
So, why didn't they put this on the cd?
