Hi all. Just wanted to throw in my two cents regarding the
changes in DT from IAW to Awake. I agree with Ben that in most
circumstances we prefer the first thing we listen to. In most of our cases
this would be IAW. However, I tend to think if you give new stuff a
chance and listen to it often, it can easily replace the first thing you
heard. In the particular case of IAW and Awake, I must agree with the guy
who said he likes IAW better anyway. I think one big change in Awake was
a small (I mean very small, don't kill me!), loss of originality. With
the exception of PMU and TTT off of IAW, there was little done with
chorus, it was all new as it was played. Awake contains a lot more
repetitive stuff and choruses. This, I HATE, to say is typical of most
mainstream bands. Of course, DT is in no way in the same league but it is
a change of style that is typical of bands I won't even mention on the
    jam.
            Just my opinion as always:-)
BTW, I see more and more of us orchestral/band instruments out there.
What are we going to do guys?

                    Jill

My reading skills are fine, I made an error sending a post, while some of
    my
faculties were elswhere. Brian was not the originator of the message,
his friend was , but it was his post , not the first of it's kind.
I would recant my coarsness to brian but not the message.
I consider the guys in DT especially mike, friends of mine
and I am just fed up with the whole gay/ ugly/drug issues
and anyone who perpetuates it! Why would you want to post
something like that ? They are some of the nicest guys you would
ever want to meet and if they are so unearthly , (MP. JP. JM.)
They sure have great looking wives. Now that I'm finished explaining
    myself on that matter ......
Zach, do you have a problem writing things in context?
And no I don't think brian is lying. When I auditioned for DT in 1990
James Labrie was nowhere in site he came along months after, may I
humbly add I'm glad he did. So you see it was'nt a choice between
anybody, I had to make personal choices for me and my family
that you couldn't possibly Know any thing about!!! So perhaps your wrong.
If you want to continue this, feel more than free to e-mail me personally
to spare the jam from the non DT content.

No offense to Andrew, but if you can't find Damn The Machine in the used
section of any CD store, you're not looking. If you have Wherehouse Records
(Western U.S.) in your city check the 99 cent bin. That's where I found mine.
     It is good stuff, however.

    Hello jammers,

This is my first post. I enjoy reading many of the informative and humorous messages on the ytsejam. First of all, I'd like to say that I am yet another person interested in covering DT. I'm a guitar player now, but I have a background in piano/keyboards, french horn and saxophone (and I could probably pick up a trumpet since I played a mellophonium, a similar instrument). I'm also interested in production (though I really don't know much about it). Since I have a limited income, and I can't afford many bootlegs, does anyone recommend any bootlegs that are absolutely necessary?

To Scott Cook: I can't believe what you said about Eric Carr. Actually, I can, since I heard it from somebody else. Now I almost definitely believe it. What they did to him was disgusting. I've been (was?) a fan for about six years. I don't buy this reunion tour they're doing, either. I'm seriously considering boycotting these phonies. (I'd say more about this, but I know that this is supposed to be about DT and most of you don't want to hear about Kiss.) BTW, Scott: did you get my tapes for the Birch Hill show?

To finally put the "Neil Peart is gay" thing to rest forever (espescially [sp?] since the guy that said it admitted he was wrong, this sort of an appendix): what do you think the line "I went to his parties as a straight minority" means?

To all Ytsejammers and the conversation about mainstream progressive possibilities: You all are probably aware of my Struggle to get research material for my research paper here at Madison. Right now, I think I'm going to title it "Audience vs. Industry" or "Progressive Rock and The Radio Industry" or what not. Anyway.... Most of my research has been involving radio stations and the industry. What I've been finding out so far is that (I'll find some direct quotes here, hold on.....) radio in general is "sticking its neck out with some new programming ideas." (they haven't tried prog, right??). "...radio is becoming more creative and programming is becoming more targeted" (Maybe they'll target us proggers!). "We're intentionally choosing niche formats with growth potential; we don't want to be like everyone else." (Well, do it!!). One article begins "Maybe it isn't news that radio programming has fragmented into enough silces to amply feed the narrowest of music and/or information tastes." Sure, this isn't news, but I think the industry is afraid of jumping into the water and TRYING a prog format. Lord knows with so many wealthy (read:filthy rich) media entreprenuers (sp?) out there, what's a few million down the drain?? Actually, it wouldn't even take that much. Another article states that modern rock radio is seeing a "dry spell", Well, I say fucking great. It's about time. Even good old Z-rock is changing. The station says they are going for a " 'theater of the mind' vibe. 'more pink floydie, more heady'. " **************************************************************************** ************ My fine prog friends, I don't know of a better time to GET OFF OUR ASSES AND DO SOMETHING. On the other hand, who says the public will be able to handle such a drastic change?? HOWEVER, we are all aware that the general public WILL be spoonfed, but then again, the general public has to equal money. We are in the midst of a Catch-22. One way, the music will be equated with marketability, or the music will remain underground. What do we do?? Radio could play it, because they are looking for a change, but, how can the radio play it and play it well without prog becoming a money making scandle like Hootie and Coolio. What can we DO????????

I just received in the mail a tape copy of Shadow Gallery's first CD, from a trade. Everyone has probably heard of their second release "Carved in Stone." Well, the only criticism of that cd I really heard from more than one person was that the lyrics were cheesy. Although I agree to a point, I thought the lyrics were pretty decent, and I think Carved in Stone is GREAT! The first album is FULL of cheesy lyrics. In the second song, "Darktown" there is a lyric "you're in a dark town, honey, whoa, whoa" , this is a great song, except for this part. All in all, I really like this album, too, but you can tell they got A LOT better with their second release. There is another 20 minute epic song "The Queen of The City of Ice" which is good, except for the spoken word part, where the king of the city cries about losing his queen, and how sad he is. But, Shadow Gallery fans, GET THIS CD! There are some great songs on it, including The Dance of Fools, and Say Goodbye to The Morning. Listen for the awesome flute solos. I believe that Magna Carta is rereleasing it in the near future. If you like Carved in Stone, there are definitely songs on this album for you. Thanks.

I think people who say that don't really _listen_ to music. Like my friend's sister, who, when I told her I liked complex music, said "Why? Because you like to know what 'key' it's in?" How ignorant! I stopped the argument after that since we were raising our voices at each other (and I kinda like her !>)>

What the hell? I *strongly* disagree. I think a lot of progressive rock/metal, like classical, evokes _higher_ emotions and stimulates those places in the soul that most people never bother to find. If people uplift within themselves that which is simple, mundane, and animalistic and call it "soul" then I say, let them live with their illusions. I have my reality.

Yeah? Last I heard, they ARE classically trained....and at least they CREATE music. But maybe there IS a difference between a technician and an artist........IMHO.

Hello. Been following ytsejam for a while now...very glad to be here. It's really nice to see a group of people who have the depth of mind to appreciate songs on an epic proportion (i.e. CoS). Dream Theater very definately defines (IMO) what music is all about. JP is a duly noted badass...as are the rest of the band.
