Not the video edit of PMU. People will think that's the only song of
    their's that's any good.

I think they should have them on from Monday through Friday of one
week. They could divide ACOS into 5 different parts and play one each
night. That should make each visit short enough to get on each night.

Skolnic in DT....I don't think so. For starters, when my guitarist went
to NAMM he had a chat with skolnic and Mr.S the man, said that he is
playing jazz now and has done enough of metal and those kinds of
    musical styles.

He also said he had quite the conversation with Mr.Petrucci which he
has yet to tell me details of.

If DT were to do a song for the letterman show, my choice would be To Live Forever. It is simple enough for the crowd to appreciate, and James sounds AWESOME during it.

If we are looking for something more impressive how about playing "TO Live Forever," up until the solos begin, followed by either

    a) The solos from "Take The Time"

    b) The Freight Train/Keyboard Run from ACOS (followed by...) The BASS Tapping part from Metropolis (followed by...) The Guitar Solo from EROTOMANIA (The BACH followed by the shred thing) Then let Mike P. (No Not ME) do a little drum thingy

That would definitely blow them away. Remember during the Dave Letterman 10th anniversary special Steve Vai played a solo!!!

Is it just me, or does someone else think that DT should put TLF on an album (not a B-side) and release it as a single. I LOVE THAT SONG. Also, that song would be a pretty good theme song for HIGHLANDER, The Series, or the Highlander IV movie (rumor I heard on the Highlander mailing list)

    Anyways, enough ramblings from me

i just had a weird night......

you see, chick corea played here at my school tonight. and i had these great 7th row seats, and i was all looking foward to having a great time.

but of course, because i'm an asshole and people actually need me for theater shows, i got bogged down at a rehearsal for "gorey stories." so, damn, there goes my ticket, for this stupid rehearsal.

9:15, the director tells me i'm done for the day. so i figure, maybe i can try to sneak in at the show and actually catch it.

i go down 3 flights of stairs to the concert theater, and all my friends are crowding around this guy, and my friend jay's all glad i'm there, and then he's like, "oh by the way, that's chick corea."

    i shit in my pants.

i told him about my night, and he was like, "well, glad you made it. hope you enjoy it."

so my friend led me to his seat (9th row) and i was treated to the 2nd half of a great show, which featured chick doing an insane piece with mallets and a clave on a piano (yes, he struck the strings with these little toys). his band (sax, bass, drums) were tighter than a baby's ass. i hung around afterwards for about half an hour to try to get an autograph, but that was taking too long.

i know, i know, no dtc. yea, whatever. i thought someone would dig this, if not dt themselves.

oh well, that's all. peace out.

Whoa! You're treadin' on shallow ground there. I'm also a classical musician and it is my goal to mate technical ability with expressivity. I hope I just misunderstood what you meant.

About the guys playing Liszt, I agree with the guy above, i.e., that they could not play it. I remember reading an article some time ago where Kevin Moore said that he left Fredonia because he "didn't have what it took to do what those guys do," or something like that. But it doesn't matter, they're rock musicians and have never claimed to be classical musicians.

Also, I wouldn't actually call two semesters of college music study "classically trained," it's damn hard, believe me!

    Allright folks...

Email me if you have an instrument outside of the DT lineup, and Ill try to write something. I play trumpet, and I figure Ill go for one of the easier songs...You guys have any ideas of a song that might sound good Big Band style?

I play trumpet, but I dont have any kind of sound system, just knowledge of theory and music. So I could try a little something, I just need to know what to write for.

Its a cool idea, glad I thought of it : )

    >Debbie Seeger seeged73@vaxa.cis.uwosh.edu >University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh >Music Major (Recording Technology emphasis)

Dear Deb: EEEK! Please don't take this in any dirogatory way whatsoever, but what are you smoking?:) I guess if awake doesn't move you, it just doesn't, but I have a hard time believing that I&W blew you away and not Awake. To me, although the Cd's are a bit different from each other (IW being as close to mainstream as DT will ever get), the stuff on Awake is still Killer!! It's just in a different frame of mind, and it takes some time to get "involved" in some of the songs. For instance "Voices" can rock me just as "under a Glass Moon" can, but in a different sort of way. To me it depepnds on where you'll allow the music to take you when you listen. I think the music on Awake takes a bit more "focus" to get off on in the same way as I&W's stuff does. The Awake stuff takes a bit longer to get to the punch, therefore requiring an undistracted listener to get the real vibe of it all. The concepts put forth in the lyrics on Awake are intense...it deals a lot with the subconcious self, and portrays a message much like a Dream would to yourself. (in Dreams things hardly ever mean what they look lke they should mean) I guess all I'm trying to say is that I LOVE both albums just the same, and I'm having a hard time believing your dilemma:) Did you try listening to Awake on a long drive with no one else in the car, and a really good stereo system? heheheh

Hey....I think there would be no way that Alex Skonlick would ever join Dream Theater. I KNOW for a fact that he is a talented guitarist, but unless Dream Theater NEEDS another guitarist for touring and the like, there's no way they'd hire another guitarist. Alex is good, without a doubt. Oh, yea, by the way. The white streak in his hair is a birthmark, not a dye job. Adios.

yo! still basking in the chick corea glory.

and i got 4658347 jams waiting, so i wanted to respond to some issues that have been thrown around.

on top of keyboards, 7 string, clarinet (which i also play, sort of), i'd be more than glad to throw in a bamboo sax or a bandola. i can hear wfs on the bandola pretty nicely. now i have to get the other 16 strings for it.

speaking of keyboards, the issue of whether or not km and ds can handle the bigboy's shit like liszt or the crackeheaded chopin.

although i think that they are both amazing (particularly km), i don't think i can see them hitting the chopin bong. of course, i can be all wrong, but with km, i think the keyboards are more a channel for his songwriting, and what he plays is what you get from him. now whether kev's stuff is virtuosic is another debate, and i think for what he does, there ain't a lot of guys better nowadays.

derek is a tough nut to crack. i gather that he may have not had an extensive classical training. i think he's very much into the jazz and blues end of the piano, and frankly i'd be scared to see him smokin the liszt bong. kinda like neil peart trying to play buddy rich stuff. of course, peart is amazing (a virtuoso at what he does), but he can't really jazz that well.

jp a virtuoso? he's up there. i hope he really does something funky on the 7 string, because that's an open field, and anyone can do something to make a difference. i hope he does it.

man, derek had a rough ass week on the jam- 1st, people are debating his sexual orientation (?!?!) and now we're debating his musical ability. give the boy a break.

scott daugherty: wow.... (c. david kobayashi productions)??? jeez! that's insane in the brain. check this out, g. i did a listening analysis of barber's hermitage songs. what great shit.

re: dt in 10 years well, i'm glad that SOMEONE agrees with me that they won't be around by then. personally, it might happen even sooner.

new fw cd, one long tune ughhh!!! the only other cd i have that does that is "lovesexy" by prince, and god that is so freakin annoying.

prog and the big cash payoff yo andrew, wassup? long time, no speak. umm...my thoughts about prog going platinum, so to speak...

    ummm...............uh-huh, uh-huh.......ummmmmm..................

if it happens, it does. if not, maybe for the better, maybe for the worst. i don't think it'll affect me personally as a listener. prog is too much in my blood now, so it won't be like polyester in the 70s or the iron shiek in the 80s.

i love that little "prague" story. someone once thought i said "frog rock," but i won't get into that.

    ben lsd???!?!?!?!

mike portnoy gay? that was hilarious with the "ripe monk toy." i just always thought of him as "porntoy."

howdy folx, i noticed something a couple hours ago while writing my research paper proposal: i skip through most of Subcon, only listening to a few songs but when AD spins into place, i listen to the entire disc. i think AD was better put together; not to knock Subcon, it roolz. i'll let you all know if the pattern of quality continues when i get my WDATU (i'm sure it will ) :]

to the person who said *after one listen* that Tori Amos was "pathetic": if i judged everything on a single listen, i wouldn't be into *any* prog bands. to judge on a single listen screams ignorance. and w/ Tori in particular, i've found that males often "just don't get it" and pass her off as "another female singer". the 'Jam is the largest collection of males that i know who like her (besides Really Deep Thoughts, of which i'm not subscribed).

Tori is someone very special. i think a former member of DT and several 'Jammers would agree with me.
