I would imagine that he actually reads the notes and might refer to the tab
because it's there but doesn't need it. I doubt that, if he says he needs
the music, he even needs the tab at all. I have a hard time reading tab
too. I mean, it really doesn't tell you much. Guitar is probably the
hardest instrument to learn to read on and tab only shows you one possible
fingering (assuming that the tab is correct) and no rhythm. Learning to
read takes a lot of time and it's not easy, but once you can do it, it's
really great. My friend is a fantastic guitarist but his reading (of
standard notation) is really bad. He can read tab like crazy though. If he
knows the song, the tab makes sense to him. Even if I know a song, the tab
doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I end up writing it out in standard
notation.

I get the feeling that everyone went to the show on the 27th and noone went
on the 30th except me. I wore my Ytsejam T-Shirt but didn't see anyone else
with one and didn't meet anyone. Anyway...
I'll get the bad out of the way first:
El-N-Gee. That club SUCKED. It was way too crowded. I'm only 5'6" and
couldn't see much although I did glimpse Myung's headstock and could see
Derek for a bit until some tall bastard moved in front of me ;).
Waiting a year for DT to come on. I called and doors were supposed to open
at 8-8:30. We show up at 8:30, hang in the car a for a while so the line
wasn't bad but DT didn't go on until 10:30 and no opening act. Oh well -
not that bad really.
I forgot ear plugs :(. It was pretty loud.
The GOOD stuff.
The two babes in line right behind me. The hugest beer selection. I had a
Bass Ale and some Jamaican thing my friend bought me. Dragon Stout or
something. It was good. Couch in the bar area and the girl standing right
in front of us. Captions on TV so we didn't have to miss Rosanne. The show:

I don't remember the exact set list but here's what I do remember (in no
particular order)

Erotomania with a cool drum solo _instead_ of a guitar solo (that was
surprising)
Voices - I think Voices is my favorite DT song. It's so great

Surrounded with the cool "resolution - ending" thing.
UaGM - very cool

Encore: Perfect Strangers
They also did some bluesy jam right before Erotomania I think. It must have
been blues in B because the bass was the lowest. I was also right in line
with the bass drum and I was getting pounded. JP and Derek did a duet
thing. Really it was like an instrumental with keyboard accompaniment. Very
cool.
The show was awesome. I was psyched to hear them live (since I couldn't see
anything most of the time).

Sorry for my late response, I'm new on this list so...
Actually folk music from the south-east-europe region (Kroatia, Bosnie,
Serbia, Macedonia and parts of Greece) does very often use odd timings,
it's not considered progressive but quite normal overthere. And the reason
that they can dance to it is because (in my opinion) the odd timings were
created to support certain dance figures. I know because I grew up with
this stuff, my parents are very in to folk music from this region. For
me a 7/8 feels as normal as any 4/4 beat. Just image how the drummer of
my first band must have felt when I played tunes I created, I didn't
even know that 13/8 is not a normal rock beat.

wow!@ two days after Birch Hill, and i'm still in shock.
High points:
I got to meet Bafu and Mike Bahr. Neat bunch of guys.
I ate dinner with Hairball!!! He's a fuckin' trip.
I was literally at James's feet the whole evening.
DT played really, really well.
Low Points:
What's with that hour wait to get inside? I'm sorry to those who
had to hear us sing the Hooky-Pookey. =)
What's with the 2 hour wait for the opening act? 10:30???
Was it me, or did Birch Hill OVERSELL the place? I couldn't
BREATHE half the night, and there was no way in hell i was
moving from that spot right in front of james.

To all that came, i had a interesting time. Not so sure i'd put myself
through that torture again, but hey!@ it's worth it.

first off.........i'd like to wish y'all a happy new year. chris (dm), ken,
mike bahr, trey, bafu, and any bonus jammers i met the past few days. peace

second- i'd like to respond to a point made about how they wish they could
have played some stuff off wdadu. although i agree that they could've done
some stuff, and other tunes like ciaw or 6:00 (which i really wish i had
heard), i mean........what can you do? it's tough, really. but hey.........
they could have played "smells like teen spirit" and i would've loved it.
3rd- to the guy who's 17 and couldn't get in (guitar16), check this- when
they played cpi in july (a free show), it was 21 for guys and 19 for the
ladies. it flipped my head knowing that i was 20 and couldn't get in. but i
was lucky, i met jp at the ngsw a week or so later and got to play wfs for
him.
to the 17 yr.old guy who DID get in, fuck you!!!!!!! well, not really
(actually, good work), but you're a bastard.
re: jordan rudress and rod morgenstein- they WERE amazing. someone mentioned
that we've neglected them- no way, they hurt brains at the malibu.
the moshers- yeah, they're assholes, but whatcha gonna do? can't leash them,
as enticing as that may seem.

Well I'm sorry I didn't get to meet anyone, it sounded like a
great time except for the crowd. Somehow I managed to come down with the
Flu on Thursday and I've been in bed since this morning trying to
recover. So I missed the Birch Hill show that I had been looking forward
to for months. Ughhh... Thanks to everyone who has posted about it, you
guys have been my eyes and ears, so hopefully I can deal with missing my
favorite band, and meeting all of the fellow Ytsejammers who travelled
across the country to New Jersey. Keep the reviews coming....

to say that I had an AWESOME time on the 28th! The YtseCon was fuckin
great, even though DT couldn't come. Trey, you did an awesome job! It
was really cool to see all of the ytsejammers face to face, it's like
we're a family now (sniff). Trey, Paul, Steve, and Brandon, sorry that
Greg and I couldn't find anything for us to do on the 27th. Hey, it's
Long Island, it's dead out here after 12! To Jaison and Mike Bahr, did
you guys ever get to the show on the 30th? Augie, those people in the pit
are lethal! I think I'll stand next to the PA next time! Anyways, it was
great to see some of you guys, like the Digital Man, Big Man, Brian Cox

and his singing. i was probably one of those who was hard against him, but i
think a lot of that changed in the last few days. i honestly believe that he
was at his best (or close to it if not). i guess a couple of months of rest
can do that for a voice as well. so i feel a lot better about him.

I hope everyone had a good holiday season. I've been getting questions
about the Japan PPV I have for sale. I've lost the email addresses of
the two people who emailed me over Christmas, so here's some info for
anyone interested.
The Video was recorded "Live" at Urawa City Hall in Saitama, Japan
1-24-95. It is PRO SHOT and in HIFI STEREO. Running time is :120. I
believe my copy is from the Master Tape, so the quality is very good. I
have gotten emails from some people raving about how good the quality
is. The price is $7 in the North America, $12 elsewhere. The price
includes Maxell Gold VHS and postage. In the U.S. Cash or Money Order
is fine, everywhere else I can only accept Cash in U.S. DOLLARS. My
bank charges me $7 to process Money Orders from outside the U.S., so if
you want to pay by money order the total price is $14. PLEASE, NO
CHECKS. Also, my vcr's are NTSC, I am having two PAL tapes made for
me, but they will be in MONO. If you hve any questions, please email me
privately. Hope everyone has a good '96.

Am I the only one who went to the New London show who feels a little
jipped? First of all, the show was great, so I don't have any problems
with how they played and what they played. However, I get the feeling
that the reason that things started so late, was because the band was so
late. I mean, I heard them doing the sound check AFTER 9:00, an hour
after the doors were supposed to open. Then, when we were getting booted
out of the club, James comments that it wasn't his fault, He didn't make
the laws. I would have at least liked to hear an apology about how long
we waited. To the opening band's credit, they're the only one's that
apologized. Oh well, I'll stop whining.

Incidentally, if it was all the club owner's fault, I'll take all that
back. I do think I heard from one of the employees that it was DT's fault
though.
