Greetings. I've been having an E-Mail conversation with Dave Mustaine of
Megadeth. It went something like this:

Me: Hi Dave. Have you ever heard of a band called Dream Theater.
    Dave: A little.
Me: Did you like what you heard?
    Dave: Yes.

There you have it! Dave Mustaine likes Dream Theater. The thing is,
though, I send him something, and he takes 3 days to reply with ONE (1) word.
Oh well. He's probably getting pissed off cause I keep pestering him with
    questions, but....oh well!

            Jammers,
The DT fan club also has also shafted me where the sun
don't shine. I heard a while back that they were returning checks
to people but I sent a postal office money order. Does anybody
know how those work so I can get my money back?
What I want to know is why at the concerts in the summer they
gave out a fan club application asking people to send their money
in when they knew the fan club was all messed up. Then a month later
a jammer tells people to hold off in sending money. (A little late!)
Oh well. Does anybody know any new info?

Also does anybody know what the NAMM convention in L.A. is?

            Later On.

I'm not a heavy boot trader, nor do I have many boots other than a few of DT.
However, I have noticed that "Metropolis" is a good guage of the overall
sound quality. You all know how they pipe the music through the PA, then
shortly thereafter, the band joins in. The transition from the recording
to the live performance is either real smooth (like on Mind Control) or
really shaky and disconnected (like on Majestic Harmonies, and to a
    certain extent, on DoE).

hi there.....something else i wanted to relfect upon about the shows.....

james- in voices, at the very end, when he sings "mind...........", i had
always envisioned him starting on that e he sings, and descend to b, then g#,
then low e. whenever david the singing kobayashi takes to the shower and
sings "voices", david always did that.

so it figures that at the malibu show they're going nuts on the improv, and
as james gets to the magic word, i start doing this "chordal descent" and
quickly realize that HE is doing it as well. i almost came again (the first
time at el-n-gee's when they went from heart of the sunrise to if)! i lost it
    at that point.

anyone notice derek bashing on the crash cymbals in that middle part in "lie"
    during the shows.

i guess i would like to enter the fray with the tapes of these shows. any
will do. i've heard a lot about the birch hill (the one i didn't go to), so i
would like to at least hear what this commotion is about. anyone who
especially has the 1st show taped, or anyone else willing to make a copy of
any show for me in exchange for my first born or sweaty left testicle, please
    email me.

who does the "temptation" "resistance" on mirror. is that portnoy, or as i
said at the malibu, mike's porn toy??

    thank you, and see ya.

pps- That last digest was rather small (one post), so this is my attempt
at resurrecting the list with a useless post! Resurrecting -- hey, I've
got "The Resurrection of Ernie!!" Wasn't someone interested in that
tune? Hehehehehehe... Two birds. One stone. It was sorted.
[as mentioned earlier, this was my fault and wasn't due to a lack of

ppps- The ytsejam is on a sequencer right now, so I can probably send

that whole midi file deal, so someone's gonna have to tell me how to do it!

Well, thank you for your replies - I asked last time about the best DT song
ever, mine was the Ytse Jam. I seem to be the only one to like it ! It
really kicks ass, and when I play it on the guitar I feel good ! It rather
playable - the odd measures are quite simple, not as in Learning to Live : I
cant even play the intro along with 'my' drummer. By the way, I'm looking
for tablatures (full version if possible) of ACOS. I've seen some versions
on Web pages but none was complete. Thank you-

She was buried today in the New York area beside her beloved daughter
(Mike's mother). If any of you would like to post messages to him
concerning this, I'm sure that the messages will eventually reach him.

So there are definately more than 3 people. (Just cause the more metal orientated people don't respond to every blinking message...:)

They are a good band...not quite on par with DT, but these are totally different styles.

That's rather odd. I was under the impression that James hated bootlegs. I thought the only one who is really cool about them is Mike and possibly John Myung. I would have thought James would have acted different than that.

Check out the Yamaha w7. It has the best electric guitar sounds I've ever heard from a synth, and a really good voice editing interface. Tons of cool effects, too, and a disk drive (really useful.) I just got one and I'm ready to die now.

I'd also recommend a decent analog synth (like the Oberheim Matrix that I have) that can give you monophonic sounds so the notes don't blur together during lightning-fast solos.

If you're interested in prices, the w7 was $1535 and the Oberheim was $300 used.

I'll probably be just one of many responding to the post about the apparent "down-tuning" of DT. It's quite simple, really, Petrucci uses a seven-string Ibanez, and Myung, various six-string basses, both of which posses a low B. And anyway, what's wrong with down-tuning? King's X does it all the time!

One more thing, any classical guitarists out there?

Then how come you called "Two Far" "Too far"? Maybe I have a misprint, but I have the Majesty demo on CD, the only CD ever put out by the record label "Ytse" called the official 1986 demo with a bio of the band plus the lyrics to all the songs. I thought mine was accurate, and it lists the song as being called "Two Far". later--------------Brian

I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad tidings, but I just got finished speaking with James LaBrie, and he said not to expect the new album until September at the earliest. Hopefully fate will smile on their efforts and we will get it sooner than later, but he said expect it later.

In other news, I saw Marcel Berkhout's proposed CD project involving the Bospop soundboard and I'm psyched! I plan to purcahse at least one of every CD he makes. I'm surprised he isn't swamped with orders; just think: the opportunity to have a CD arrive from some other Jammer while you're waiting for my latest effort. I imagine his will be at least of the same or better quality that mine have been. I can't tell anyone what to do or think, but I'd hope that you'll support another Jammer's humble efforts.

One final thing... LdyIceFire... that was easily the most immature message I've ever seen... if someone is coming in from out of town and you SKIP town, after having agreed to host them, I'm afraid you're 100% in the wrong there. Nowhere in the world is that considered acceptable etiquette, least of all here. In Arabia you'd have delivered a mortal insult! You say you can't "put your life on hold" for them... well by agreeing to host them, I'm sorry to say you agreed to do just that. Other Jammers did (like Andy Keegan and Jaison John) when they hosted people from out of town. If you don't want to put your life on hold, don't agree to host people (or meet them, or any other commitment you plan to BREAK!). If there's one thing I've learned in this world, it's that the greatest sin is to break a commitment. No matter what your race or religion, you still wind up being an asshole.

Why did I just post that and waste space? Both to give credit to those who hosted other JAmmers for the holiday week, and to further warn the rest of us about hosts like HER. :)

As you may know, Showtime and Cinemax are giving free previews until the 15th!

Anywho, I was watching Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (the second one) and they had this Battle of the Bands thing, and the band that was on before Wyld Stallyns was....Primus! They played the end of Tommy the Cat..you know, BAAAABBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYUGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!.... That one.:-) And, in the credits a bunch of the music that was written, and the guy who played all of the little riffs when B+T did their air guitar was Steve Vai. I thought that was preeeeetty ding-dang nifty myself.

    >[deleted]( also from B+B, "I'd >like two tacooooooooooooooos and a small order of friiiiiiiiiiiiieeeees....to >goooooooooo!")

YEah....I saw that too. Pretty funny. I didn't get that album, though. I think that song was "The Philosopher" off of Individual Thought Patterns. I don't have that album, but I'm famed (in my mind anyways) for knowing everything about a band, but never actually having heard their music.

    >I just can't see DT as a band which are down-tuning their guitars!

John P. has a seven string guitar..It goes B,E,A,Uhh...There a G string? Nooo, people, nooo!!! (If you watch Night Stand, you'll get that.) and then up to E. And John M.'s got a six string bass.

    >Mike uses shells that are just slightly smaller then a normal shell diam. >This give the drums more of an atack sound. Hope that sheds some light >for all the MP fans.

Man, that tom sound on Awake is awesome, huh? Tons of attack and tone, but no ringing. I want his drums!

    >6) Ken your doing a killer job w/ the new jams!!! I love them now!!! I >actually look forwrd to reading them!!!!

That's a perspective we haven't seen yet. I myself haven't noticed much of a difference, because I skipped most of the stuff that he's moderating. :-)

And I guess that more than 3 people have heard Death.:-)

I can recommend that you check out the Alesis QuadraSynth Plus. Its not too cheap (i got mine for $950) but you can say it has everything. Over 500 basic sounds to choose from (20mb). You can take those sounds, layer up to 4 of them, add any number of effects like reverb, chorus, flanging, or even overdrive (ever heard a distorted piano? :), and then save that into a preset. The S4 also allows you to edit the waveforms with envelope filters, modulation, etc. There are 640 presents on the S4 to choose from and edit yourself. You can even find the EXACT same distorted organ sound that was used for Erotomania, as well as the best grand piano sound i have ever heard. The one I have is the synth version, the full keyboard version goes for about $1500 i think.

For some DT content: I was at the BH show (i was back behind the sound guy, and was very happy when someone handed him a stool to sit on :) In my opinion I think the overall sound was a little better the last time I saw them at the BH, but even so nothing will come close to the Manhattan Ballroom show, which was the first time I ever saw them live. IMO.

Also, I'd like to say hi to the guy I sold my extra DT ticket to. I gave him a nice deal on it I think (12 bucks..i just wanted to get rid of it!)

This is my first posting, so be patient if it's wrong. In response to Andreas' question of keys, I'm pretty sure Kevin Moore used a Roland D-50 and JD-800. At least on the Music in Progress video. He may have had some other things stashed away under the stage. Who knows. These are great keys. I personally use a Korg O1W/FD and a Kurzweil K2000s and I really like them. The Korg has great meat and potatoes sounds ie. strings and pianos. The K2000 has good wacky sounds..er..unusual sounds. You'de have to check them out for yourself. Good luck.

And now for the obligatory quoted lyrics:

ok, it looks like i have enough DAT owners now that are willing to be branches. now i need everyone else that wants a tape to email me. right now will just be the new jersey show. the setlist was posted, and it will fill up 2 90 minute tapes. what i need you all to send to me is this:

if you want to be a limb (receive 1st gen copy, make tapes for ppl) - your full name - preferred email address - your physical location (full mailing address) - type of analog deck(s) you have (to make A>A copies) - how many tapes you can make for others (8 minimum)

if you want to be a leaf (receive 2nd gen copy, make no tapes) - your full name - preferred email address - your physical location (state only)

    the structure is this:

    seed DAT > Branch(D>A) > Limb(A>A) > Leaf

there will be 5 or 6 branches, then 8 or so limbs from them, then 8 or so leaves to each branch. branches will recieve the tape on a DAT clone, limbs will get 1st gens from DAT, and leaves will get 2nd gen from DAT. we can support at least 300 people like this i think.

anyway, email me at lerxst@metronet.com to be added as a limb or leaf. i am not taking any more branches, and i will notify the ppl that will be branches. if too many people want to be limbs then i will just choose randomly or pick the ppl willing to do the most tapes. others will be put as leaves.

    later...

oh...deadline for getting on the tree is one week from the date this is mailed out on the digest mode of the jam... [sig trimmed] <><><><><><><><><> Brian V. JP isn't tuning down-he's using a 7-string in the standard 7string tuning, which is the same as a regular guitar's tuning only it has a low b-string later--------------Brian

I don't want to waste space on the jam, so I'll make this short. Has anyone heard of Adversary? They are an unsigned metal band out of Valley Stream, NY. If you've heard them or are interested in new bands, please e-mail me privately. later--------------Brian

A couple of days ago I posted about JP using a PH on his solo on Another Day live. When I searched my bootlegs, for some reason I never listened to Lost In The Sky. I listened to it today to find the PH, proving I'm not crazy. Thanx to anyone who responded (I haven't checked my mail since my post made the jam). later--------------Brian

There are several good models out there. I personally use a Roland D50 and Ensoniq ESQ-1 and love 'em both. The D50 is great for strings and Hammond B3 sounds (especially if you pump it through a Marshall :). The ESQ is great for Dx7 or Minimoog kinda sounds (very important for playing solos).

As for the newer models, depending on your budget you may want to check out...

Roland XP-10 Korg X5D Alesis Quadrasynth Kawai K11

All these beasties sound quite good, and have an enormous sonic pallette, so your bases will be mostly covered sound wise. For prog-metal I reckon these would be OK. Are you after Analogue or Digital sounding stuff??

    > Any opinion about the new Roland XP-10? Reports sound interesting so far, > but of how much use is it?

Only played with it briefly, sounds quite good -- all these GM (General Midi) 'boards seem to sound the same these days... Feel free to email me about this...
