Thanks very much to Michael Coghlan...he found the E-Mail adress for
the Late Show! So, snail mail is out. The adress is: lateshow@pipeline.com
Once again, the date for sending them is January 26th. In your
letter, say that you recommend Dream Theater for being a musical guest on
the Late Show. Also **IMPORTANT** Mention something about the fact that you
are an Online Ytsejammer. I think Dave is the kind of guy that appreciates
large, organized movements for something that may be considered by some (Not
us, of course:-) insignifacant....mostly because they're out of the ordinary.
JANUARY 26th! Seeya asquare.

Hey guys!
I recently picked up the latest issue of Korg's PROVIEW magazine
which features an interview with Derek! It's really cool and has a couple
really cool pix of Derek with the new Korg Prophecy. In the interview Derek
says that he was a little worried about being accepted by the fans. Check
out this excerpt:
"The fans have been very receptive to me since I've joined the
band. There was a lot of skepticism at first. I was reading the internet a
couple weeks after I joined and some Dream Theater fans wrote, 'Oh, Kevin
Moore has left the band and there's no one who can fill his shoes!'
And then they found out that I played with Alice Cooper and Kiss
and said, 'Oh, he doesn't understand progressive rock, he's just a heavy
metal keyboard player. ' And this was before people had even heard one note
out of me or talked to me or anything! But I kind of expected it. Whenever
an original member of a band leaves, the fans are kind of uneasy. "
Well, I guess Mike Portnoy isn't the only one who reads the Jam after all.
Until next tie, later guys!

The poster I won in the draw for early orders of the Dream Theater Hat
arrived yesterday. I want to thank TODD so much for this. I do not know HOW
you could give this treasure away Todd, it must have meant so much to you.
This I&W poster was signed by the whole band in 1992 with their messages to
Todd. I nearly cried when I saw what it was. Thank you again Todd

Brian May... Oh yeah! He's very, very good!
The best example recorded to date (IMHO) of delay/echo effects:
'Brighton Rock (Live)' from Live Killers...(by Queen)
This is a killer jam, very tasty, sounds like an army of guitars towards
the end. Excellent use of the 'echoplex' to blend and time the harmonies.
Love it! You should listen to it if you haven't!
See ya later,
Craig

Hi all,
In ytsejam 1228, someone suggested everyone write Letterman about getting him
to have DT on The Late Show. I think this a fantastic idea and it has a good
chance of succeding. But I would suggest that we wait until DT releases their
next disc. He usually only books bands that are promoting something. It might
still work doing it now but if you be patient and wait until August or so, we
might have a better shot at them getting booked.
On the other hand, Late Night with Conan O'Brien would be grateful that
somebody would even consider going on their show. So maybe we could try Conan
now and wait until late summer for Letterman. That's only *IMO*.
Have a good one.

Pardon my shitty, condescending attitude, but the above is a perfect example of those stupid (sophomoric is a better word) remarks often made on the Jam which really make me laugh.
Actually, for quite a while, DT chose to end ACOS with the band just hammering away over the "B sus" chord, even *after* they had re-written the song with the new ending. I was glad when they chose to incorporate the new ending into their live set.
Personally, when I heard the rough mix of ACOS featuring the recapitulation of the intro piece, I was *very* psyched about it. I exclaimed to MP what a great arranging idea it was, and he gave credit to Derek for it (which makes sense, it is a technique often used in jazz arranging and clearly something taken from Derek's Berklee days).
Getting back to my initial statement, it is my belief that most people here on the Jam are true metalheads at heart and nothig more. Why else would they hold such intolerance for the subtlety and variations found in certain DT compositions? It's not just been the debate over ACOS, there have been other remarks made in the past as well. I also feel this is why so many people on the Jam honestly believe that James L. is a truly great singer. Personally, I think he is a decent singer, who who especially records well in the studio, but whom live exhibits poor diction and even poorer control over his pitch and overall vocal quality. A classically-trained tenor he is NOT.
I *don't* mean to turn this into a "rag on James" session, but sitting here on the sidelines of the Jam watching participants exclaim the "virtues" of James' live singing and denouncing quality arranging techniques is really a joke (and not unlike the mentality exhibited in your average episode of Beavis & Butthead, or that TV commercial for Freedom Rock ["Is that Freedom Rock? Well turn it up, man!"]).
Wassail, /Buck, aka "Mr. Serious", who's masters degree in music is the backing for his strong musical opinions.
P.S. Mark, if I've offended you, too bad. I'm not attacking you personally -- it's moreso an inclusive statement -- one I'm sure you'll get over, nonetheless.

=====READ EVERYONE CAUSE THERE ARE SOME CHANGES!!!=========
---1st change--- Hey!!! I have decided to make a slight change to the NEW YTSEJAM SHIRTS due to several suggestions for it...Instead of having the big (and correct) Majesty logo and DT name on the front, I am going to put it on the back of the shirts/sweats. This will be just like the back of the YtseCon shirts in white ink and all. This can be seen on the DT section of my web page: http://www.ju.edu/UsrWebPages/tallen/home.html
NOTE: This is not the EXACT image that will be on the shirts. This one is a little rough and the screen print place cleaned it up a ton (ie. looks pixel-less or not from a computer. I think this one was scanned in w/o the highest resolution) but it will give you a good idea.
---2nd change--- So, you ask, what will be on the front of the lovely garments Trey?? Well, I was thinking...since the address for the Ytsejam will be changing soon to probably ytsejam@ax.com and ytsejam@arastar.com will be just a weekly/bi-weekly digest form of announcements and other important DT info I was going to put the ax.com address on the front of the shirts and leave of the arastar.com address. The front of them will look something like this (centered across the chest):
--Ytsejam-- Dream Theater's Internet Mailing List ytsejam@ax.com
I could put both addresses on the shirts if you guys think that would be better. Ideas??? Suggestions???
=======================PRICES=============================== All garments come in any dark colors (blue, black, red, purple, maroon, navy blue, royal blue, forest green, etc.) and sizes S, M, L and XL. They will be printed with white ink.

How I got turned on to Dream Theater is quite a long-winded story, but I'll try to really keep it short. One night in late 1991 I saw Fates Warning's Point of View video on Headbanger's Ball, and I really dug it, so I went out and bought Parallels. I happened to notice that James sang on one of the songs, and I thought it was pretty cool. I then bought FW I then bought FW's Perfect Symmetry, and the track which stood out most was "At Fate's Hands," with Kevin on keys. I figured I might as well check DT out, but I had a bitch of a time trying to find anything by them. I then stumbled on Images and Words. What initially attracted me to it was the cool album cover art and the real proggy song titles (ironically, I got into Queensryche and Marillion the same way, because of cool cover art and cool song titles, I'm kind of shallow that way). Anyway, I got it home and listened to it. I was mildly impressed with PMU, Another Day kind of put me off, TTT was pretty cool, and Surrounded was solid as well. Then I flipped the cassette and was knocked out by the second half of the tape. DT was exactly what I was looking for, the heir apparent to ELP, which I was going to see that summer on their Black Moon tour. Unfortunately, three different tape players shredded my copy of I&W. Here was the album I had been searching for for years and years, and it was gone before I could really listen to it. Fortunately, I managed to find another copy of it, and the rest is history. I then managed to snag WDADU in a Columbia House clearing sale on cassette (I didn't have a CD player in those days), again the second side impressed me more. Charlie's voice didn't do much for me, but Kevin's keys and MP's drum work were stellar. My wild enthusiasm for DT has since mellowed a bit, but still, I&W is one of my favorite CD's. I must have worn that tape out good.

If somebody's got any DT-related pictures, please let me know! I would also like to obtain midi-files of all kinds of progressive songs. I have "PMU", "CIAW" and "UAGM" (made by another guy on the list!)
