When God tells you to please explain, even if you're an atheist I guess you
    got to oblige.

The Beck Depression Inventory is one of those hilarious little psych
scales, where they give a number to something that's really big. In
this case, the number says how depressed you are. The scale looks
vaguely accurate, though, so I guess maybe it's a landmark.

Anyway, the average range is from 6-14. Below that, you're extraordinarily
happy and content. Above that, you're clinical.

ObDT: Think 'Raising the Knife' might have some quotes from 'The Knife'
by Genesis? Probably not, but it'd be pretty cool.

       I hate you all.

I was at the Birch Hill show on 12/29. I really did want to meet DT, and
talk to them, musician to musician, you know? And my idiotic friend who
didn't have a good time because it was too loud and there was not chairs,
food, or girls for him to stare at, said to me that there was no chance that
I could've met them, and dragged me out of the bar as they ended LTL. I
wanted to strangle him. It isn't fair.

    > Subject: Ya know what?
    >
    > What aspect of Dream Theater music is it that you like?

The cohesiveness of the five instruments at once, the fluid shifts from one tempo to another, the incredible talent of each player, the balance of the melodic and metallic, the poetic, oftentimes deeply intellectual and sometimes mystical lyrics, and the dynamic quality of the music that seems to be exclusively Dream Theater.

    > Or, since you may have gotten to the point where you like it all: What > aspect of it drew you in in the first place?

I believe it was the bizarre lick Petrucci does in "Pull Me Under" (3:34) that first attracted me. It's a very strange collection of notes, and as far as I know no other guitarist has ever run through that scale. Not to mention a vocalist with such intense range and clarity who doesn't sound, well, fifteen years old, ala Stryper.

---- > From: kretschmer@bdt.com (Jon Kretschmer) > Subject: Double Riff thread > > And I just heard the Conciously Unreal version of Metropolis. Dominici > sucks HARD.

I second the motion. Speaking of CU, there has been a somewhat recent thread of what we hear LaBrie saying during songs other than the actual lyrics, etc. On "Metropolis" from CU, on the line "I've found it's all caught up with me," I seem to hear LaBrie saying somthing like, "Ay FOUNDITSA CAUDAP WIMAAAYYYY!!" Who knows, maybe it's just my ears.

---- > From: DreamNDay@aol.com > Subject: Bootlegs, WDADU, The Mirror > > Its kinda dumb that they don't want to play any songs off of the first > album because its 8 years old. Come on! I mean Metallica still plays > songs from Kill Em All (12 years old), and I can't think of any off > hand, but a lot of bands still play old songs. Besides, AFIL, Afterlife, > The Killing Hand, and The Ytse Jam are some of their best songs!

Yes, they might be some of their best songs to an outside ear, but to the mind that created them they might not be. If I wrote a bunch of songs on an album that described how I felt at the time, how I viewed life, etc., I probably wouldn't want to perform them live a decade afterwards. I don't blame Petrucci for not wanting "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" to be played live, because he's probably not at all the same person now as he was then.

This example as opposed to "Creeping Death," which is not about the members of Metallica, but the angel of death, who as far as I know left the band right after Master Of Puppets. I would also expect bands like Aerosmith or Van Halen to still be playing songs from their early years because people still have sex after all this time, and the members of the bands have obviously not lost their interest in the act. With DT, the material reflects many other things. Ex: Can you imagine Kevin Moore wanting to perform "Only A Matter Of Time" today in 1996? I sure can't.

---- > From: Michael Bahr <durnik@indirect.com> > Subject: Hi everyone! UPDATE and MORE > > I was stung TEN TIMES in less than two seconds by a SCORPION that had > taken up residence there!!

Maybe it thought you were The Killing Hand.

    > Since I had been receiving mail of the nature of "how should I act when > I go backstage" and "what should I say if I get to meet them" fairly > consistently lately, I decided to post this to all so that those who > were wondering about it anyway could find out.

I would offer two points of advice: (1) clear your head beforehand and try to think of those questions you've always wanted to ask. (2) Keep your head clear afterwards so that you can REMEMBER what it was you asked and what answers you were given. Who knows, you might want to post stuff like that to a mailing list.

Also, if you've never met the band before (and assuming that you aren't the type to scream all the words of all the songs for two hours), try to do a few vocal warm-ups or drink a glass of water before meeting them. This is so your voice doesn't suddenly crack in the middle of a sentence. "Gee, Mr. Myung, I just wanted to SAAEY that I..." (this was from Mark Metzger, mmetzger@bostech.com, in reference to ACOS)

    > My vote is keep the intro and sack the outro.

Nevermind that the song has already been released in its final form, but are you the newly-inducted sixth member of the band? Can I be the seventh?

My vote is that Portnoy do a ten-minute drum solo. My vote is to extend the beginning of "The Mirror" (guitar/drum polyrhythm) to a full minute, because quite honestly it's too pulsing to be confined to the ten seconds it has on the album, and such an inferno should be fanned for live shows. My vote is that Petrucci style his moustache like The Iron Shiek did back in the 80's. My vote is that LaBrie do an acappella solo, perhaps a classical vocal piece by Mozart.

My vote is that the band get an eighth member to sing backups, and do guitar rhythms under Petrucci's solos. My vote is that "Caught In A Web" be played twice in a row with no break in between, just wait for that part where everyone cuts out momentarily at the end, and instead of doing that last little bit they just start the song up again from the beginning. My vote is that they play Seattle three times. My vote is for Myung to go back to those big boots. My vote is for Sherinian to keep his hair short.

I read a couple of jams ago about how miffed someone was about how Guitar Magazine trashed DT. I saw it too, but I just dismissed it. After all, intelligent music rarely is rarely slammed intelligently. I doubt that all the editors have listened to ACOS, and they just called it "a trifle self-indulgent," because of JP's reputation as a monster guitarist. It's a symptom of the times. But aren't we interested in that which transcends? Let the masses be, enjoy the music we do on our own. Besides, you meet potentials unexpectedly. We can Ytsefy them, in much the same way we got Ytsefied. :)

I just subscribed to TNMS, the Rush list. It's moderated?!? Are totally irrelevant posts unilaterally rejected and only semi-relevant ones let through, or is rush-mgr's definition of moderation "spam filter?" It has echoes of of pre-moderation Ytsejam, IMHO. Perhas rush-mgr can take a few hints from kbibb, like trimming .sigs, deleting dead-space, etc. "Guilty Pleasures!" Geez! That would never make it past Ken Bibb.

    ((lesson excised))

Good lesson, but that isn't what Petrucci is doing in the solo. He's picking the a-string very rapidly while sliding his left finger from the nut to about the seventh fret, hitting all the harmonics as he goes. These two techniques sound somewhat similar, so you could probably get away with doing either if you were to cover the song live.

Geez, Buck, as if your dozens of posts about what DT does in their hotel rooms has really enlightened any of us. No, wait, you didn't post about DT's hotel rooms. Then just what DID you post about that was so integral that it justifies you suddenly earning the right to complain about Ken's moderation? As if this version of the 'jams is no better than the previous one? You've complained about live shows, you've complained about transcriptions being hopelessly flawed, and now you're complaining about Ken's moderation? I'd like to see Ken moderate the complaining, myself.

If I were to expect anyone on here to complain, it would be Mike Bahr. As hard as I try, I can't be as informative as him, so of course he could post about how pathetic my posts are because they aren't as informative as his. Guess what. Not many people's posts are. Strange how I have learned to live with this fact that not everyone can be Mike Bahr.

If all we talked about was DT, and Ken's "moderation" was actually what you have wrongfully defined it as in your whining (as something that keeps all non-DT posts off the 'jam), this thing would either be very, very dull, or would only be sent out once every three or four days.

    ---- > From: "Andrew S. Moore" <amoore@riker.anglia.ac.uk> > Subject: Re: Thoughts on Ken's Moderation > > heheheheheheheheheheh!!!!!!!!!!! > > that was classic!

Why thank you. I would call it a "collaborative effort," but I wasn't aware of Ken's..."alterations" until I saw them myself on the 'jams...

    >>Its kinda dumb that they don't want to play any songs off of the first album >>because its 8 years old. [deleted]

I keep seeing people think that DT doesn't play WDADU songs just cause they are old. This is not the whole reason. Dereck brought up this side of the explination but Brandon and I asked JP about it and he said that it wasn't really that they were "old songs" but that they were "older songs and not as many people know them"...He went on saying, "we have a hard enough time playing the songs on the newer albums and keeping the show around 2 hours!" (I'm sure none of the fans would mind a 5 hour show, but I didn't mention that :) So there you have it - straight from the horse's (or at least one of the horses) mouth. A very big reason why DT don't play too much WDADU stuff is cause there is so much other material to do and if they played alot of WDADU stuff, they wouldn't be able to play the stuff that "most" of the fans are familiar with ["most" being a term used to describe mainly non-jammers and those who haven't heard WDADU and all the other things which we as Ytsejammers are blessed w/ :)

The level is almost complete, but it hasn't been without it's stumbling blocks. The graphics of the band stuff were difficult, but I got them in there, they just are not of the highest quality. (But hey, its doom2!)

Thanks to all who sent me midi files of DT, as they are now the background music in the level!!! They came out a little quiet, so when you recieve the level, CRANK IT UP!

The sound FX are the only thing giving me a problem....I am attempting to replace some of the sound fx such as the players scream, and the teleport sound, but it's not working out. I know it can be done, just haven't found the right method. I sampled some DT sounds off the CD, then mixed them into the game, but the playbakc was warped reallll slloooowwww in the editor, and completely non-existant in the actual game play. This is all thats holding the level up right now......

I have had over 60 requests for this level, so to those of you out there being patient, WE'RE ALMOST THERE!!!
