Since I've received a number of requests for information today, I suspect
that the move has been discussed in IRC or something :)
Yes, ytsejam@arastar.com is moving. No, there are no instructions and
no firm move date schedule. The move will probably take place the first
week of February with a daily announcement starting a week before the
move will occur. On the date of the move, everyone will be unsubscribed
and will have to resubscribe to whichever list they want to join (there
will be two).
The new ytsejam list (which will be at Anarchy-X) will be an unmoderated
list. I will probably not be actively involved with the running of
this list.
A new list, metropolis@arastar.com will also start at that point. It
will be a heavily moderated, progressive metal digest that will
concentrate on Dream Theater and related bands. There will probably be
one or two digests a week on this list.

...OK ...someone wrote in the last jam that the 'beat' played in Ytse Jam by Mike P is similar to the intro 'beat' in UAGM..no..the only way it is similar is that there is a succsession of two groups of sixteenth notes between the bass drum and snare drum...just a common combination..not the same 'beat'.... Another thing..for all of you waiting in fact in the state of drool for WDADU...hmm do you really want it..I can only say it might me worth the sentmental value..it sounds like a very young group..not extremely mature in songwriting with a lousy singer..I am not saying that the music is no good ...it just isn't to a certain level of mature playing..there are plenty of dig me licks by each member of the band..Dominici doesn't sound terrible through the whole album..just enough to make you want to kill him for ruining it! I'd say...find a friend who has the album, buy a really good quality high bias tape..and dub it..If you are a freak like me..buy it..you get to see DT all glammed up inside..!! plus you have a CD..hmmm This is just a short addendum...Rush didn't sell out or lessen their muscality in their recent albums..they are playing what they like..they write good songs..period.. If they aren't as long..so what? They sound good..very good musicians are playing them...they pull it off.. Another thing..ACOS is not a piece of godly art..I think it kicks ass but..it does tend to dwell on ideas for a long period of time..take a listen to the beginning..it is basically the same riff over and over for about five minutes...their arranging isn't that obscure..it is more complicated than your avg. band but so much that it defies all classification..a lot of their songs hold the charictaristics as your avg. Pearl Jam song..enter with an idea..change it slightly..verse..back to idea..verse..back to idea but this time only keys play it and bass reharmonize on backgrounds..guitar solo!..back to idea..verse ..end it..It sounds great ...they are an incredibly band..if you take any theory or arranging you'll recognize form more..Their form for the most part is simple just enhanced with more complicated rhythm figures and fills..incredible though..well, see ya later Jammers!

I just wanted to write to say that Damon's letter about progressive fans was cool! Mojoman also rules! I forget who it was that said to wait on the Letterman thing, but I agree. They have nothing to promote now, or at least nothing marketable to the average alternative ingesting moron. If an appearance on Letterman brought them mainstream success, that could mean progressive would become "trendy." Imagine all of these bands finally realizing that they have to get trained to survive as a musician. What a concept. Maybe I could actually turn on something other than jazz on the radio.

Why is everyone questioning the format of the live version of ACOS. However DT wants to play it they will. The first time I heard that song was back in late 89 at Sundance on Long Island. C.D. was no longer singing for them and they did it as an instrumental. Actually the whole show was done that way. I happen to like the original version that many of you have heard on TDoE. Oh yeah to those out there reciting the lyrics to The Sherrif of Huddersfield, Rod Smallwood was their manager for a couple of weeks around the time of IaW's release. Hence the reason they opened for Iron Maiden at the Ritz in Manhattan. P.S. I happen to be a close personal friend of the Mojoman. Damon, I really think you should go back and listen closely to the guitar parts on Balance. Yes, the songs are very "poppy" EVH but his guitar playing, particularily on "Amsterdam" and even "Can't Stop Lovin' You" are not exactly "pop simplicity". I feel they are as unique and interesting as JP's parts on ACOS.
Buck, I've got to agree with Mark on the ACOS outro debate. On CD, sure it's a full circle cool kinda thing, but live, I just wanna see the boys reef fucking havoc on that Bsus chord followed by my screaming in ecstasy "YOU FUCKING RUUUUUULE!!!!!!!!!!". If you can't respect the emotion involved in experiencing that with your favorite band, then you can take your "masters degree in music" and shove it where the sun don't shine.

I believe that the point Mark was making is that, from a "performance" point of view, a stronger, heavier ending is more appropriate for ACOS. Don't get me wrong, I love the acoustic outro, but I just don't see it working that well in a live performance, and this is what Mark was getting at. I fully agree with ditching the acoustic outro in favor of a heavier, more powerful ending, and have 6 years of live performances to back up that opinion.

First of all, I don't believe that most people on the Jam are metalheads at heart. At least not in the sense that you are implying. Rather, IMO, they are DT fans at heart. Secondly, IMO, most, if not all, don't hold intolerance for subtlety and variations in certain DT compositions. Rather, this is one of the key elements of their appreciation and support of DT and their music. I take it that it is definitely one of your reasons for listening to DT, and one of mine as well.

I'm sorry, Mr. Serious, but I really can't pardon you shitty, condescending attitude. Your comments here seem very foolish to me. As I understand it, you seem to think that because you have a masters in music, you opinions are better than mine where music is concerned. I have to ask you, do I love Dream Theater any less just because I don't have such a degree? Am I any less in awe and appreciation of the beauty of their music simply because I don't command a knowledge of the theory behind it? I think not. I argue that one need not understand music to enjoy it. There seems to me to be a very large number of people that are more taken with the technical ability of DT than the actual music and soul or it. At least true metal heads and those guys in the freedom rock commecial get excited about the music. While perhaps uneducated, they at least know how enjoy it with their hearts - not their degrees. You, sir, must be a blast at DT show. Perhaps you sit there calmly, degree in hand, disturbed by LaBrie's "poor diction and tone control" while disgusted by the people around you who are actually captured by the spirit of the music? I scoff at your egotistical snob attitude. You musical education makes you no greater a fan than I, in your case it seems to have blinded you from the true heart of the music. Try deflating that ego of yours and listen to DT with your heart, not you masters degree.
