Sorry if this is old news, but I just got a letter from Jason Becker
and would like to share the info for those who are interested:

Jason's current condition finds him physically unable to write (his
signature was a thumbprint) so although he reads everyone's letter, he was
unable to made individual replies. Answers to the most frequently asked
    questions are:

    - Jason can still speak, but swallowing and breathing is becoming increasingly
difficult. He needs help with every aspect of daily living. Obviously, he
can no longer play guitar, but he's working on setting up the computer system
so it'd be easier to him to write music.

    - Jason had excellent results sporadically with the chelation treatments.
However, none of the improvements were lasting. I still get treatments
occassionally because there is still some mercury lingering in his system
and this treatment is supposed to remove the mercury from his body. There
may be a connection between mental toxicity and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease,
which is the cause of Jason's illness for the past 6 years).

    - Jason's long-awaited album "Perspective" was released in Japan in Sep 1995.
He is planning to release it in Europe this year and in the U.S. this month.
Since record labels are unwilling to distribute "Perspective" (due to his
inability to tour and promote the album) Jason is releasing it on his own
label. Below is the detailed order information:

            Item Price

            'Perspective' (CD only) $15.00

            'Perspective' video sampler $15.00
            (10 minutes - VHS only)

            Jason Becker t-shirt $15.00
            (large/extra large)

            - California residents add 7.25% sales tax
            - (8.25% in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties)

Shipping & handling $5.00 plus $1.00 for each extra item

Make check or money order payable to Jason Becker Music. Send order
to Jason Becker Music, P.O. Box 5109, Richmond, CA 94805. Orders take
            4-6 weeks to arrive.

If you are ordering by credit card, the following info is required:

Card used (Master Card or Visa)
            Card #
            Expiration date
            Signature

Due to the limited distribution "Perspective" will get, I encourage
fans of good music to order a copy and send him words of encouragement. When
Jason was diagnosed with ALS in 1989, doctors said he had no more than five
years to live. It is now 1996 and Jason's passion for his music has helped
him sustain his life. I think he is a very good example of a dedicated
musician (just like the DT guys) and if you haven't heard his music, you owe
    yourself to check him out.

You know you guys ( and gals )...everytime a band appears on the Letterman
show they seem to get 2-3 minutes to play. Then maybe (if you're Van Halen) a
small encore after the commercial. The problem is that DT is not a
"soundbite" band. I cannot think of one song, besides Pull Me Under, that
has a theme that repeats througout the song. And how long does the intro to
PMU last...there goes your 2-3 minutes. Don't get me wrong, I would love to
see them on the show. But what should they play in that short period of time
that would really represent them? I don't know.

    Any suggestions?

Also does anyone have more information on live DT video from Ronnie Scotts
(via MTV). Patricia?? One would think that someone would have recorded
    Headbangers Ball that night.

To all you who went to see them in December...remember that people in Oregon
who have been screwed by the fan club are entitled to any available DAT tapes
    before anyone else....video too. :>)

Warren in Oregon... with the fan club shaft buried deep where the sun don't
    shine.

I just wanted to respond to the guy who said that Charlie
Dominici was in the band Oblivion Knight. I was under the impression that
this was the band that Chris Collins was in. CAn anybody clarify this

After a month of not having Internet access because I didn't pre-register
for the spring semester, I'm back. SOme of you might rememebr me and some
of you might not. Oh well, here's what's up with me anyway:

First, I FINALLY got When Dream and Day Unite! I hadn't been able to find
it in my area, so I ordered it through CD NOW and I got it a few days
after Christmas. I like it a LOT. My favorite song on it is The Ones Who
Helped to Set the Sun. I've been trying to interpret it and it seems to
be something about Guardian Angels. I also like Charlie's voice. It's not
as good as James', but he does some nice harmonizing at times, especially
    in TOWHTSTS.

I just got finished making a Dream Theater sample tape for a friend who
wanted to hear more Dream Theater. If you want to know what I put on it,
E-mail me. I won't waste bandwidth with it as I know it's precious - so
precious that Ken had to suspend Ytse Jam for some time. I'm also in the
process of making a rock instrumental tape that will have Eve and The
Ytse Jam as well as a lot of Savatage with some Metallica, Rush, and
    other stuff.

Keep mind that I'm behind on the jams, so I might bring up something
that's been discussed before. If I do, just E-mail me about it. I've got
a lot backed up, but I'm deleting most. I'm going to read the last five
or so, rather than play catch-up on the 30 or so jams I missed.

And I am anxiously awaiting WDaTU. I know Mike's doing the best he can in
getting these out, so I won't pester him.

I'm taking a beginner's music course, now. So, I'm finally going to learn
about all that music lingo that people use like time signatures and such.
Of course, I had to buy $63 worth of CD's. It was either that for spend
hours in the music library. No thanks! I just realized how cool Beethoven
was. While listening to part of his 2nd Symphony in class today, I was
mentally comparing it to Dream Theater. Hopefully, this class will allow me
to understand what's going on in Dream Theater's music.

I suppose that's it for now.

I don't mean to brag, but that didn't really phase me. I figured
out what was going on right after it happened. I guess I was kind of ready
for it. When it starts with just the guitar playing, it was the first time I
heard it so I assumed that it was in 4/4. Then, it went into 6/8. Then I
knew that the rhythm (Duh duh duh) could be interperated more than one way.
So after that I was hoping they'd go back to make it sound 4/4 and lo and
behold...they did. I wasn't thinking of the third way they used it (the
fast one), but I still could tell what was going on when it got there. As
of now, that's one of my favorite tricks to screw with people's sense of
rhythm. I'll tell them to beat out the Duh duh duh part on the floor tom,
then I'll go into the 6/8 beat. That'll screw up a few right there, but
then I go into the 4/4. That always messes 'em up. I made a point to tell
them not to change at all...but it's hard. :-)

    Thar.

    What's up Jammers,

I was just wondering what band people think sounds the most like Dream
Theater. I would like to here who all of you think the band is that most
resembles them. Answer this question and we can take a poll.

[Send all poll answers directly to GuitarM16@aol.com who will tally the
poll. Do *NOT* send your answers to ytsejam@arastar.com -- kbibb]

    Hello Jammers,

It has been a while since I've posted, this is my second post to the
moderated Jam. <wow cool..> I don't really have much Dream Theater to
talk about but I have heard quite a few good prog bands recently.

    Superior
    ========
I'm waiting for the CD to come in the mail. I have heard two or three
sound samples off the WWW and this sounds like a really excellent
progressive metal band. I think most jammers would like them. E-mail
Bernd at basmer@med-rz.uni-sb.de if you would like to know the location
of the sites that are carrying sound files. I will be carrying a sound
file as soon as the CD arrives on my Unsigned and Indie Label Bands site.
    http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/munsign.html

    Threshold
    =========
This band is a fantastic prog metal band! A bit on the melodic side,
lots of similar elements to Dream Theater, different lyrical style (if
you like Rush's lyrics you should like Threshold's) and they even opened
for Dream theater last year. Thanks to Kris for the bio he just posted
to the jam. Their albums will be released domestically in the USA
starting in February on the Avalanche Records label. Go to my WWW page
or mail me if you want the URL for Avalanche. Avalanche is also
releasing Ivanhoe (which has received a lot of praise around here) and
    Black Jester in the USA.

    Braindance
    ==========
Braindance is rapidly becoming one of my favorite bands. They mix
several musical styles (truly progressive) metal-new
age-psychedelic-gothic-hard rock-jazz-ambient, you name it, it is
probably there. The vocalist Sebastian Elliot has an excellent vocal
range (he sings really high notes consistantly and sings deeply with
equal skill). The band adds harmony to the vocals with help from Vora
Vor (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals, Production) and Robynne Naylor
(Keyboards, Backing Vocals) annd it is executed masterfully. Robynne
adds atmospheric keyboards similar to something out of Tangerine Dream or
Pink floyd, and Vora Vor uses several different guitars, acoustic,
electric, MIDI and she can shred as well as compose great music (her and
Sebastian Elliot have almost all of the songwriting credits). Notorious
is a hybrid Jazz/Metal/Rock drummer who has no trouble with changing time
signatures. I highly recommend this band, they have so mmany influences
I cannot see why they won't appeal to a wide range of people. E-mail
brayndanse@aol.com or visit my WWW page or the one at IUMA (accessable
through my page or through searching in your favorite search engine) if
you are interested. The CD "Fear Itself" is available from Of Sound Mind
(410)529-7082, Sam Goody (only New York area stores will probably have it
in stock, the rest can order it) or directly from the band for $15
    (Checks payable to Sebastian Elliot)

    Double Edge Productions
    215 Thompson Street
    Suite 11
    New York, New York 10012
    USA

You cannot go wrong with this CD!

    hello kids............

just a little reflection or two:

    re: portnoy interview

interesting stuff there. but i kinda disagree with the segment regarding
kevin moore's interest in "easier" music.

say what?!?!?! "ONLY" easier music? that kinda makes me think that if it were
really so, he'd never have been in dt in the 1st place. the word "only"
seemed to be very strong, and i am hoping that maybe that was a really big
    transcription mistake.

    re: bafu vai/kaoru
yes, i have strong reason to believe that kaoru is a female.......the name
itself is a quite female name, and those that have actually met her can
attest to that (if you have, please cover me here!)
[I met her and she's a woman :)--kbibb]

anyone have an address or phone number to magna carta? email me with it,
    please.

thank you. that will be all.
