    Dear Jammers,

Hi there! I just go off the phone with my travel agent, and basically we
have a deadline now for reserving hotel rooms! Here's all the info:

The Dream Theater YtseCon III will be on Saturday, October 12th at the La
Guardia Marriot. We have already spoken to DT management and Dream
Theater already know about the convention, and the chances that they will
be there are EXTREMELY high! Meaning, members of Dream Theater already
told me that they should be there.

The entrance fee for the YtseCon III will be $20 per person. This will
cover the cost of the conference room and various expenses (but mostly the
conference room since the place is a bit classy =) ). If you plan on
going, then contact Chris Merlo at cmerlo@cs.uvm.edu, or you can also
contact me at jc309@columbia.edu, but Chris is doing the head-count for
    the YtseCon III.

If you plan on staying at the hotel, I need to know from you immediately!
I am collecting all of the money since I signed a contract with the hotel
already for a 75 room block. The cost will be $100 per room per night, so
I'm sure that you guys would want to crash together and split the cost.
But, if you plan on going, I need to find out from you ASAP! The deadline
for the money I have to send in is August 2nd, so e-mail me at
jc309@columbia.edu to let me know if you need a room.

If you need airfare for the Ytsecon, then you can contact Rich Worldwide
travel at 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that you are going to the Dream
    Theater convention.

Well, that's basically it. Again, we need to get the money in soon for
the hotel, so please send in the money soon! Thanks, you guys rock!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

Whoa! That would be indescribably weird. I can't even imagine the two of them together, let alone in Dream Theater.

    It's cool, and because you're a procrastinator.

It's Mikey's new Rush boot from the CP tour (yum) - 2 cd's full of the coolest stuff ever. You're still a procrastinator. :)

    > Well, when you post once a month you can afford to be lengthy. And BTW, I > like OASIS too. I think they're fab.

So do they. That's the problem. I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but...

Why do so many of today's bands sound/look/act/write like 70s and 80s bands did? I mean, come on! It's been done! That's probably what I like most about DT - it's new. It ain't been done before. The nineties bring new questions, new solutions to be found. I can't erase the image from my mind of all the fucking UVM wannabe-hippies wearing flower print dresses and big nasty plaid shirts and Birkenstocks and bell bottoms. Get something that's yours, for God's sake!!!

    Sorry, I'm done now.

Jesus! When did *this* happen? I was just listening to the Q last week! Shit, first all the stations go grunge, now WNEW and the Q have *both* gone classic? WTF?

NY radio sucks. End of story. (I must have had a bad day or something. I'm yelling at everyone today. Just got back from around. Picked up 311's "311". These guys are pretty damned cool. If I had to describe them, I'd say they were a cross between TRHCP and RatM. They groooooooooove alot. I like 'em.

No problem. :-) You can be my woooonderwaaaaaaaall.

    >How could someone who isn't employed be > able to go out and buy CDs from all these bands that we love?

I do. I just do a buttload of chores all the time, and my parents pay me for it.

    My ankle is peeling.

    >........that i had my first piano lesson. funny how time flies, huh?

    Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..CHOMP! <swallow>

Time's fun when you're having flies.

    >Bottom line: If you get a dub of a commercial cd and you like it, be >ccol about it and get the CD. I don't mean bands like Rush or Kiss or >Van whoever they are this week. But bands like Superior, Shadow Gallery >and Magellan who aren't muti-millionaires and could use the cash. >

Better yet, get a dub with only a few songs, so it's enough to convince you to buy the CD, and you'll still have some unheard music to listen to.

    >Well, I didn't bring this thread up originally, but I think I can give you a >fairly obvious example. Put on "Xanadu" and then follow it up with "Awake >Heavy Jam" (I think that's the one) from _Subconscious_. If you don't see any >musical similarities, might I suggest Q-tips. >

    >But then again, >I know what Ben thinks about Paradise Lost and the new Metallica, so I'm >having second thoughts :-) >

Paradise Lost is wannabe Black Album 'Tallica. Go see DMB, though. You'll be glad you did.

    >The thing is, though, I have absolutely no idea what they sound like. Could >someone give me an idea of what I should expect to hear?

Mostly acoustic guitar, funky jazzy stuff. Not heavy. They have a sax player and a violinist. They don't sound anything like DT. Dave is a great guitarist...not a soloist kind of guitarist, though. Amazing funk drummer. They're just coool. And I've heard they improvise a lot live.

    >Another thing . . . what does a Space Dye Vest actually look like? I'd be >really grateful if someone could mail me a jpeg, or something :-) Or, even >better, send me a real one! >

    It's a rhetorical garment (?!). Space is a vacuum, and you can't dye space...so, it's just a not-possible-but-still-cool thing like that. <grin>

    >So when exactly do you leave the realm of the 14 >year olds and join the 15 year olds?

Hmmm....is it that big a difference? Ask E-Man. He knows everything about me. :-)

    >-No, the position will be shared by Barney Greenway and Jello Biafra.

No, that wasn't it. Kirk Hammett quit Metallica, and decided that he would start to be gay just to be different, and he bought three more "wah" effects for his guitar, but he got his hands cut off in a fight with Sammy Hagar (he was upset about the whole Dave Roth thing), so now he chopped up James LaBrie and stuffed him in Neil Peart's (wasn't he gay too?) refrigerator, and now he's singing for DT, only he raps.

    >I find LSoaD very reminiscent of U2. >

Good call! James does sound a bit like Bono in the first chorus.

    >The ACOS production is top notch, sounds a little > rougher and like it was done faster and with less budget. It sounds > very fresh.

ACoS gives me the feeling that it was recorded in a very small, hot, stuffy place.

    >If someone mistook my breakfast for a urinal, >I'd be somewhat upset. If that someone was myself, I'd be VERY upset. ;)

Yeah, me too. I hate when I have to kick my ass.

Ta ta. And, the reason I said Simon sounds like Mike is that they both use an excess of polyrhythms. Simon, IMO (damn. I used the hated acronym), is a cross between Neil and Mike, only better.

yeah! i went to sleep listening to Pantera and woke up with ancient Led Zep. (no offense intended) that really pisses me off. they were the only decent station that i listened to. now i have it locked to K Rock. (92.3) but they didn't suck. they were just... incredibly mainstream. :)

Ok, I have had enough of the people here (at least some) who have been dumping on James LaBrie, and even starting rumors that he is out of the band.

Personally, I think LaBrie is the perfect vocalist for DT, and I don't think they would be nowhere near as good as they are without him. (yes, I own "When Dream And Day Unite") LaBrie is the best vocalist to come onto the scene in quite some time.

I listened to "Antiquites," and some of the demos from other singers just did not sound right. DT needs James LaBrie. Period.

DT without him would be like Journey without Steve Perry and Foreigner without Lou Gramm. It just would not be the same.

    Hello fellow Jammers, and others!!

    Just to let you know....

NYC based WAXQ...or Q104.3 has gone classic rock!!!!!

Apparently, the presure of the New York market was too great for WAXQ and they chose to play a more open market....(presently, the classic rock market is only being address by WNEW(102.7)...and they seem to be doing a really bad job)

Hopefully, this will be the start of a new thing in the NY radio market. NY listeners can testify to the very conservative radio market lately. I personally have been screaming for a breath of fresh air. Maybe WDRE's (92.7) change back to the format of WLIR made the administration of WAXQ look at their bland contribution to NY radio...and forced them to change a little.

Tune in.....Q 104.3 has become a good station again!

I finally heard something directly from one of the boys on ABC News.

Sammy says he didn't leave the band... VH kicked him out! He considered leaving back in *January*, but he decided he could never do that. It was back in January that management "tricked" him into recording a song for the GH album. Sammy said the only reason to do a GH is for the money - and that he's against this. He hoped the GH thing would blow over..

Upon hearing DLR is back with the band, he called the whole situation a "disaster." He mentioned hearing VH will tour with DLR in the Fall.

And finally, Sammy said he plans on touring with a new band.

So, it seems like all of those rumors about leaving due to his new family were bullshit.

Personally, as far as Steve Hogarth era Marillion, my favorite is "Brave." It's sort of a moody concept album. Some of the Fish era Marillion stuff is harder to find, but "Script for a Court Jester's Tear" and "Misplaced Childhood" are two excellent titles.
