Saw them in Sac. on Friday. *Awesome* show. They had a lot
of energy. Mathias (I was in front of him) is _the_ man.
Great lead guitarist, underrated. The new drummer is younger
and more energetic than Rarebell ever was (his only studio
work that I found interesting was on the songs "They Need a
Million" and "Love on the Run" (the closest thing to prog that
they might've ever gotten)), and he did a mini-solo that was
decent. I layed on the grass for most of Alice Cooper. I can't
say much for the songs, but both his sound and the Scorpions'
was *really* good (Rush concert sound-engineer- take note). We
arrived early enough to hang in office building the parking lot
across the street from Cal Expo, since you can park there for
free (unofficially. of course) and drink with impugnity before
the show. We met up with some people there who were friends of
a friend ('70s rocker-crowd, really cool people) and one lady
drew scropions in black ink on various places on our bodies.
I got mine on the back of my head (I shave it) and everyone said
it was awesome looking (too bad I never saw it, but the other
ones were cool). My friend's wife called us a bunch of dorks when
she was the "tatoos", but we laugh since she's sold out to listening
to country after years of being a classic rock/prog-rock fan.
Anyway, the only thing that sucked is that we had to get up in the
morning and help my friend move into his new house; he was the
worst off on 3 hours sleep, and a headache from the cheap tequila
those people brought with them. Anyway... the Scorpions were great,
see them if you get a chance. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (like
"One" for Metallica) was the prime song of the night. Friggin'
    great.

And to you NYC'ers going to Prog. Night, bring pad and paper
and post reviews :^)> you lucky bastards. Still, you couldn't
pay me enough $$ to live in The City; I prefer the open fields,
beaches and forested mountains of the West.

Nor-Cal 'jammers, be sure to get Lolla' tickets, they went
on sale for the San Jose Spartan Stadium show on Sunday. See
you there. Hope to see Jenniebear and Keith there, too, I'm
glad you guys didn't drop off the face of the Earth!

Also, I hope my Superior CD is there, I wasn't here Fri. and
I didn't get a chance to check my mail today. Eagerly awaiting...

    Well hello everyone!!!!!

I got in my car this morning to go to work, and put on the radio. I have 15 F.M. presets on my car stereo, and one of them was a station in N.Y.C., Q104.3 Well it seems that last night was their last hurrah. Late Sunday they were playing old Meatllica, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, today they started playing "Classic rock". The first song I heard was "Josie" from Steely Dan, not at all what I was expecting. Then they played Bad Company. Here is problem. When 104.3 came on the air back in 1994 they were playing hard rock to heavy metal, which I thought was cool since they were the only station playing music like that. Now their definition of "Classic rock" sucks. My classic rock would be more along the lines of Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Rush, and Led Zeppelin to mention a few. In fact they even played DT from time to time. Now forget it. It sounds like the best of easy listening. Recently the only other good radio station on L.I. changed to a country format. Now that one really hurt. The store that I work in is right next to the studio where the station transmits from and I have spoken to the DJ's ( the station was broadcast on two frequencies 94.3, and 103.9. 103.9 has maintained its format) They said that the station had become one of the most listened to stations on the Island, but they were bought by someone who's CEO likes country music, and felt there was not enough country music on L.I. Now I am forced to listen to Connecticut stations. In closing I would just like to say that corporations suck. They cater to that 28 to 45 yar old range who they feel have all of the buying power, and don't care about anyone else. Here is a suggestion to all those big wigs WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE! I am sorry to have wasted all your time, but I felt the need to vent some anger.

ok, i understand the need for better classic rock. but i heard blondie and toto on what used to be krock. i alomst puked and made my friend crash off the nsp. what a disaster.

even better news. now that dt has gotten rid of jl ("officially, might i add") and devon and jello didn't quite work out, i hear tori amos and sammy hagar got into a brawl while waiting for auditions. they both got badly beat up, so instead david coverdale is giving it a shot!

puke on that. see ya. ***************************************************************** david yoichi kobayashi the wild and magical koba.

What's up... this is all from Jam 1660--

    D-Man writes:

Well, except maybe for that 6/8 keyboard break in the middle of Metropolis... they ripped that straight out of ELP's "Trilogy." Almost note-for-note, and certainly rhythm-for-rhythm, even the drums.

Anyone else find DT riffs that sound ripped off, or at least a little too familiar? (Not counting the Wheel of Fortune thing in Scarred)

    Ben writes:

Yeah, 311 kicks ass. Their lyrics totally suck, though, and they're not the greatest rappers, but yes, they groooooooooove. 10 o's. Ben, go buy "Grassroots," it's really good; it's a little more varied than "311" although not quite as heavy-- still have that super-high snare, though. I saw them live last year, and it was a fearsome, fearsome show... the resurgence of skater rock, pretty much. The world needs more metalfunkhiphop bands, IMNSHO. Preferably with vocalists who can actually rap, though.

    > >I find LSoaD very reminiscent of U2. > > Good call! James does sound a bit like Bono in the first chorus.

Huh? I thought it sounded U2-ish because of the strings at the beginning (especially the demo version on SFAM), and also because of JP's funky slapback delay thing he does, which sounds like The Edge. When I first heard that song, I thought he was playing this super-complex sixteenth-note guitar part, but it turns out he's like playing quarter-notes and the delay is pinging the notes back at 16th-note speed. Cool-ass.

    > ACoS gives me the feeling that it was recorded in a very small, hot, > stuffy place.

    Gross.

    Anna writes:

    > yeah! i went to sleep listening to Pantera and woke up with ancient > Led Zep.

Just goes to show you that even in his old age, that Robert Plant still gets around. (Didn't know he liked to do it to Pantera, though.)

    Steven writes:

    > I listened to "Antiquites," and some of the demos from other singers > just did not sound right. DT needs James LaBrie. Period.

Yes. I think AQ and SFAM should both have been subtitled "A Tribute To James LaBrie." The other singers sound almost painfully bad (well, except for Cintron's ACOS, which was OK), whereas James sounds incredibly awesome on his tracks, especially the live versions of TTT and Mirror on AQ. I listened to these 2 CD's and really came away with a new appreciation for his voice. Damn, that fucker has PIPES. He is the man.

And about the VH thing, the guys on the radio out here in Dallas say that alcoholism HAS been a factor in this whole singer mess. They won't give names because of rehab policy or something, but they say that "alcoholism has again reared its ugly head" in the band. Hmm.

Well, Scott Weiland of STP got busted again for drugs... maybe Sammy could go work for them. "Flies in the Vasoline... OW!! YEAH!!! AW YEAH!!! OW!!! Sometimes it blows my mind... YEAH BABY!!! OWWW!!! AHH HAAAH!"

Also, a tip of the hat to my younger brother, who as of today is now the proud owner of a slick black Ibanez 6-string bass, and he's only 17! Little bastard. Very cool.

Random thought: I was listening to the radio in the car the other day, to some shitty song, and when it was over the DJ said it was by this band called The Reach-Arounds. I nearly drove off the road! What are they thinking?? Who names these bands??

I must admit, though, the Truth-In-Advertising Award must go to the band Garbage. Because man, they are.

Oh yeah, and in Jam 1658, Mats writes, of DMB:

    > Their drummer is not of this planet.

That reminds me. I work at a movie theater, and I get to see free movies, so I am quite looking forward to seeing Independence Day about 50 times this summer, all for FREEEEEEEEEEEE. Life is good!

I enjoyed your list yesterday. This morning I've found my first digests so I've spent some time reading ALL of them (I promise NOT to do it again...). Once I have finished, I'd like to share some of my thoughts with all of you (just to take a first contact, you know) - Enjoying music/'Loving' a band/'Gods' Whenever I have discussed with anyone about anything I've found some different behaviors. This forum is not an exception. Fortunately, I've read a lot of fine posts, with intelligent opinions, and they move from the 'enjoyment' to 'adoration' of DT. Well, I think it's normal. When I was younger (I don't feel old, just 28...) I often walked on the extreme. It was just loving/hating something. I suppose it's just what people calls 'Mature', but nowadays I find very difficult to follow a way without considering all the rest. That works with DT, too. You can bet they are my favourite band (I wouldn't be here if they weren't...) but I'd like to see we're different people with different opinions. I don't expect to see 'lambs', I want 'minds'. This leads to my thought: Why do you post so frequently when you find a critic to a song, an album, a band? Just respect the other. We all know that NOT everyone thinks that way but (IMO) we don't need to see a hundred answers to what someone considers a 'flame'. - LaBrie I've found so many posts about LaBrie that I have to think about it. Is he a (very) good singer, a god or what? (see first point). Usually I don't give a dammn about rumours but even if he is fired, what happens? Just remember.- what happened when Kevin left the band? What happened when Dominici was out? Just think.- What will happen when we die? World will continue its travel through space, it will not stop. If LaBrie leaves DT, or is fired, we will miss him, of course, but another vocalist will come, maybe worse, maybe better, even if NO vocalist comes, it would be interesting to consider the chance: An instrumental album (what a dream, isn't it?)... - VH I have read this morning more posts about VH than about DT. What does it mean? Is it the new fashion? Maybe I'm thinking as an European, forgetting that VH is something different in the US, or maybe I have to explain again my first two points. Well, if we have something to say about them, why don't we subscribe the corresponding list? (By the way, VH was one of the bands I liked... with DLR, and I've enjoyed Hagar's work too - do you remember 'Through the Fire' with Neal Schon...?)

I'm afraid I have written more than I would like to read from anybody but I hope you will forgive me.- I was just introducing myself.

Weel it is incredible that 104.3 changed to classic rock...However, I was upset when WNEW went for classic rock to alternative mix bullshit. The good part is that K-Rock, is doing the alternative, WNEW is truly doing QUALITY Rock, and Q 104.3 is doing all classic...perhaps too classic for me. The big question... How does the Q 104.3 format change affect DT? Is pretty bad, 'cause if there was any NY station that would have been playing the next DT album (which will rock), it would be Q 104.3

As for Connecticut, there are far better stations there than in NY. Here in NY, WNEW and Q 104.3 will still play Rush. In CT, WPLR, WCCC, and WHZN will be playing lots of Rush (as always), and also DT...

BTW, GET REAL PEOPLE.....lets see hard core facts that James has officially left DT....stop me nervous. Imagine Jon Anderson of YES in DT...........oh my god I think not!!

Here is some news I found on the new DT web-site (www.rsabbs.com/dt/).

"News from the Home Office DT management would like to address some issues that have apparently been sprouting as of late. First, James and Derek are not out of DT. There was never a time when they weren't in the band, or even being asked to leave the band. James is a bit upset at the rumour, and wants everyone to know that it's far from the truth. In other news, John P. is doing 'Another One Bites the Dust' on the upcoming Queen tribute album, and James is covering 'Freewheel Burning' on the upcoming Judas Priest tribute album.

Update from Mike.. We just spoke to Mike. He got back from his Australian tour and had a great time. While there, he did a gig with "Theater of Dreams", an Australian DT cover band. James is in town for the next couple of weeks, so the band will be working on the next batch of demos for the new album. They hope to have the writing/demoing period done by the end of next month.

Songs for the upcoming album Finished Titles Where Are You Now Take Away My Pain - lyrics by John Petrucci as eulogy for his father's death Raise the Knife - Mike's Lyrics You Or Me AnnaLee - Derek / Elton John mode (ballad)

Songs Currently Being Worked On Carnival Cat's Tail "Completely Untitled"

This makes 5 finished. There are 4 more written instrumentally. The 9 songs cover about 80 mins of music, and Mike said that the band intends to write a 10th song, and that will be it.

Double CD News In response to the Internet discussions of DT releasing a double CD, the new and upcoming album by Dream Theater will NOT be a double CD, nor do they plan to release a double CD in the near future at this time. "

    Hi all,

at the risk of making myself unpopular, let me ask a question:

how many of you out there find samples from films and TV shows bothersome and distracting? I mean the stuff that is in 'Space Dye Vest' or '6.00'. I don't mean background stuff like on 'The Wall' or 'Dark Side Of The Moon', which I believe was done especially for these albums, but rather the random channel- hopping sort of things. For me, it's like trying to listen to music while somebody else is watching a video - I find it just distracting and annoying. Admittedly, the samples give some fans something to think about ("what film/ video/TV series does that come from - I must see it"). It's like having a mosquito in your room when you're trying to get to sleep. I can see that it can sometimes be useful if a song is 100% based on the clip or sample (e.g. 'One' by Metallica, or 'Hopkins' by Cathedral) - perhaps it's just me, but I doubt it.
