The only station that is still cool in the NY/NJ area seems to be 89.5 WSOU
(Seton Hall Univ). I remember picking them about 8 years ago by mistake.
They did something called Radio Armageddon that featured Slayer, Testament,
Anthrax, Overkill and Manowar. It was awesome. The DJ's were goofy kids who
    sounded unprofessional, but cool.

BTW: I was at the premier of Independence Day last night and it was pretty
    cool.

    EVERYBODY DIES!!!...(Just kidding)...

Yeah, but just wait 10-15 years when WE'LL be the ones with all the "buying
power". THen maybe we'll get some good music :)
BTW, Minneapolis/St. Paul is worse for music. You can choose between jazz, country
or alternative... (If I'm missing a good station in minneapolis, someone please tell
    me!!! :)

Actually, I find it to be an interesting enhancement in many
    cases.
Take QR's Rage For Order record. A number of the songs on that
record would sound much different, particularly Screaming in Digital,
    without the presence of samples.
I really don't care for the samples in 6:00 however, I feel
that they are used to excess and I really hate the way they were
inserted into the end of the track. Then again, it could just be that
voice. It reminds me of nails on a blackboard.

    Cheers,

    Hi all,

After lurking for quite some time, I've finally got something to write about.
After hearing all the folks in NY ranting about the Q changing formats,
it reminded me of something that happened recently here in Baltimore.
WGRX-FM 100.7 changed from Classic Rock to Country several weeks ago.

But in the changeover period, they played all sorts of stuff from the
late 80's and early 90's. Actually, on the first morning I got to
jam to CIAW on the way to school!!! Very cool. Alas, though, it didn't
last long. Soon they changed to "Polyester 101" and played disco for an
entire weekend! Blech! (for the unenlightened, this practice is called
    "flushing the format")

So for all the New Yorkers, we sympathize, as we now get to listen to
yet another country station in our area (bringing our grand total up to 6),
which leaves us with EXACTLY ONE "rock" station, WIYY 97.9 -- and
    "rock"...well that's debatable.

Ok, I've had the cd since it came out. I admit that it is great that they
went back to the old sound. Great vocal harmonies and the like. My only
gripe with this cd is the lyrics. I usually could care less what the
lyrics are but on this cd for what it seems like every song they say the
same line over and over and over again. How many times do they say
    Sometimes in that song?

If you have a chance to see the Dave Matthews Band then,
    I say go see them.

The singer's voice takes a lot of getting used to, but the musicianship
of the band is outstanding. Go see them just for all the jamming they do.
    You won't be disappointed...

Their studio work pales in comparison to what they do live. They are
    awesome in concert.

I attended the Kansas/Styx concert in Nashville on June30. It was a great
show. IMO, Kansas blew Styx off of the stage. I have a question for anyone
else that has seen the show. Did Styx have the shittiest (spelling) guitar
sound you have ever heard? In all seriousness, if you have the chance, go
see this show. Kansas alone is worth the price of admission. It is a shame
that in this day and age musicians on the level of Kansas are lowered to
opener status or playing small clubs. At least this show was a short return
    to the glory years.

I am just curious. Are there any jammers in the Memphis, TN area?

based upon the song. Its not like they just throw random clips in for

    Hello Jammers,

After about a month of down time I guess I am ready to post to this Van
Halen ooops.. Dream Theater digest. I personally think Sammy Hagar is a
great frontman and vocalist, oh well, now Van Halen can double ticket
prices for the next tour and sell it as the "reunion show". End of
    comments from me.

Anyone who is contemplating going to this Prognite in NYC please do
yourselves a favor and go. Mastermind is always incredible live, they
will probably be playing some tunes from the forthcoming album, they are
loud as hell, guitar is fast and furious (Bill is incredible), you guys
and ladies can't go wrong. I just saw Braindance for the first time live
over the weekend at Progscape and all I can say is WOW! Every musician
in the band is top-notch, the theatre presentation was interesting and
enjoyable. Vora Vor easily is the best female guitarist I have ever
seen, she kicks the ass of most male guitarists as well. You folks will
be impressed. Sebastian's singing was incredible, brilliant use of his
wide vocal range, he can sing high or use his booming lower voice for
evil effects. Ambient keyboard are a nice touch. For those who haven't
heard this band think Rage for Order era Queensryche as higher calibre
musicians, ambient keyboards, frantic drumming with some jazz roots,
female backing vocals, and a vocalist AS GOOD AS Geoff Tate. OK, I
committed the worst sin of all in prog-metal but it is true, Sebastian
Elliot is truly one of the most incredible vocalists I have heard and he
can outsing almost all of the prog-metal vocalists I have ever heard, and
that is a large number of vocalists. They also play longer songs than
Queensryche and Braindance isn't afraid to jam live and break out into
killer solos that aren't in the studio versions. Note that I am not
trying to bash on Queensryche, I love them as well, I just want to give
    everyone a reference point.

Vernon Reid is opening for King Crimson this summer for all of you Living
Colour fans a great chance to check out the man and one of his major
    inspirations.

I also met a lot of people at Progscape 96 from this digest who don't
subscribe anymore due to reduced quality of the list. I guess I must be
a die-hard. Thanks to all who have recently mail me updates to the DT
discography, I am going to update and re-post it.

    Later,

    Mike

This whole topic of a NY station switching to classic rock, brings up
a real sore point with me... I like alot of music that was made in the
60s, 70s and 80s, but why in the hell do classic rock stations have to
play the same damn "hit" singles over and over? I mean Led Zeppelin
has tons of very cool stuff on their albums without having to play
"Stairway to Heaven" every 30 minutes... What's the deal? Dig out
those CDs and play some other tracks! Play some other bands! I almost
never hear Kansas (other than Carry On or Dust in the Wind), Yes has a
million songs they could play besides Roundabout... These classic
stations really suck bad... I think these program directors need to
pull their heads out and try to do something a little different than
"every other station in the country"... That's the same lame response
I got from the program director of our local rock station when I asked
him to play the new King's X single. "Oh, it's a good song, but we
need to see if other stations play it much before we will"... Screw
'em! Turn off the radio and crank the CD player, maybe if they lose
some advertising dollars they listen (yeah, right!).......

    More Drive-By Comments From Adam:

    1) Can't agree about the argument that the production on "Images and Words"
is TOO crisp, lagging behind the other records and sounding dated. I've
always felt that "When Dream and Day Unite" could have had a better
sound....it's just murky and doesn't really let the instruments shine as
they might. I&W has, to my way of thinking, a really nice, tight sound,
where you can hear more of the contrast between instruments. "Learning To
Live" is clearly the best-sounding song they've recorded....EVERYONE sounds
    prime on that one.

    2) Aside from chronological issues, I have a problem seeing Simon Phillips
as a synthesis of Neil and Portnoy. Simon Phillips certainly has the
polyrhythmic thing together, but I wouldn't say it's as central to his
playing as it is for Jack DeJohnette or Puffy Bordin. I STILL say he's
closer to Ginger Baker. Portnoy's polyrhythmic playing sounds a lot like
Peart's, anyhow....more so, I'd say, than to Simon Phillips. All of these
    guys, though, can really play....

Well, okay, just the two....for now....

Hi! I finally got to the bottom of this, so I'm CCing this to the
    Jam.

HERE'S THE TRUTH... UNDERSTAND IT. KNOW IT. CARESS IT.

James and Derek are 100% IN THE BAND. They were never out, they
were never even thinking about it. Here's what happened.

When Kevin Gilbert passed away, DT parted ways for a little while
as far as their day-to-day activities go. James went home to Canada to be
a daddy and spend time with newborn Chloe Nadia. Derek decided to hang
out with his side-project Ethyl Mertz and play a few shows in the NY
area. The two Johns and Mike continued their instructional careers by
    doing clinics and teaching students.

Now the European press works under extreme conditions. They need
news EVERY DAY or they lose their jobs, and truth be told, there wasn't
really anything to report lately. No news is good news for US, but it's
death for those reporters. So when one of them whose job was on the line
noticed that DT was all doing different things, he probably asked
management what the deal was. Management told them as innocently as ever
that James and Derek are busy doing other things, and it was
misinterpreted, purposefully or not, into the article in that one
magazine that first declared James and Derek were out. Since rumour
suppression is difficult at best, the rumour has propagated everywhere
EXCEPT on the net, where three of us (Me, Neil Elliott, and Jeff Chew)
posted refutations BEFORE the rumour even got here! How's _that_ for
    reliable info!! :)

To be certain, and clear up all misconceptions: DT is getting
along better now than they ever have. The only problems in the band right
now are difficulties finding a producer that can keep breathing long
enough to record an album. Interpersonal relationships are solid. The
lineup of James, Derek, John, John, and Mike is likely to remain for
    quite some time now.

            Take care all!
