The following appeared in Ytsejam #1660:

    >I listened to "Antiquites," and some of the demos from other singers just
    >did not sound right. DT needs James LaBrie. Period.
    >
    >DT without him would be like Journey without Steve Perry and Foreigner
    >without Lou Gramm. It just would not be the same.

Okay, this isn't quite Dream Theater content (but I did leave the
reference to DT in there! <g>)... Actually, Foreigner was once
Foreigner without Lou Gramm. There was that period when Lou was doing
the solo thing (i.e. "Ready or Not"), and Foreigner released an album
without him. I believe it was called "Unusual Heat," and if the name
doesn't ring a bell, well, that shows just how forgettable it was!
Anyhow, we saw Foreigner in concert last year, and they're still really
tight, and, yes, Lou still has the voice. :)

I noticed that I said in the new CD update that Tori CD orders are open
three times, but "not open" once. Just to clarify: they're open.
Currently available are Dream Theater "When Dream And Today Unite",
"Antiquities", "Scenes From A Memory", Rush "Critical Mass". Open to
pre-orders are Tori Amos "Storm", and soon to open (like as soon as I get
the tape on 7/27) will be orders on Metallica "The Wrath of God". Around
about the time the new semester begins, I'll be opening orders on Dream
Theater "Precious Things", which will be a really fantastic disc.

I don't know how many of you like this band, have even heard *of* this band,
or if you couldn't give two hoots either way, but there's enough diversity on
this list that I thought I'd pass the news along, being a huge fan of theirs
    myself.

I got a surprise email from Lou Falco today, confirming a rumor or two -
number one, WM is no longer on Mausoleum Records, and number two, the band is
no longer called Wicked Maraya, but rather just Maraya. (Don't get 'em
confused with my nick on IRC and #ytsejam. ;) As for a new CD, he says the
new CD _No Hope for Humanity...?_ will be released in Europe with Rising Sun
Productions in August or Spetember. No word on an American release as of
yet. They also have a home page up (haven't seen it myself; I'm on my way to
check it out after I send this), located at: <http://soho.ios.com/~maraya/>.

If you haven't heard them yet, I recommend you pick up their first CD,
_Cycles_ (if you can find it) - they're basically a cross between prog and
power metal, not quite as refined as DT or Shadow Gallery or Fates, but they
still kick some serious ass. :D

    >have?

I'd like to impart something TRULY sad. DT gets ZERO airplay
here in Canada. None. Nada. Zilch. Zero. None.
The only song I have heard played was CIAW and that was on a
station out of St. Catherines, Ontario at around 2 am.
Prior to picking up I&W after hearing they were a musician's
band, with lots of time signature changes (Rush alarm went off :) ), I
bought the record. As soon as I heard the opening guitar part of PMU,
    that was it. Instant addict!
There's something about that clean sound he gets. It's almost
as good as, dare I say it, sex! (Hey, I'm a guitar player (we're a
little out there sometimes)) That says nothing of James soaring
vocals. That guy inspires me to sing more on a daily basis. I have
spent more time practicing my breathing techniques in the last 2 years
than I ever did before. as much as I like QR, I have to say, move over
Geoff, your replacement has arrived. Now, before everybody blows
chunks in my face, I have seen QR several times and the Geoff that I
am used to is Geoff from 85-91. The Geoff who could do multiple tracks
from Warning, RFO, and O:M live without difficulty. I didn't hear that
on the last tour. I heard an aging voice and a great deal of strain at
times. This is not taking a shot at Geoff in any way. People age, it's
a fact of life. My only concern, is that James may shorten his career
by scratching notes in the back of his throat as he does on Awake.
At any rate, I apologize for rambling. Vive le Theatre de
    Reve!

Albums I've bought without hearing any of it:

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway: This one took awhile to get used to but it has grown to be one of my favourite Genesis albums. Needless to say I've bought as many of their albums as possible since.

Dream Theater - I&W and Awake at the same time: Nuff said :). Actually I got WDADU and ACOS without knowing any of the material on those either :). But I guess we're only looking for first contact with a band.

Queensryche - Promised Land: Once again I trusted Internetters and got what I wanted.

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery/Tarkus: I haven't listened to the first yet as I bought it today :). The second album is pretty cool, I recognized Lake's voice from the Crimson album he did..

King Crimson - Larks' Tongues/Starless and Bible Black: The first album was ok but isn't as exciting as most of the music I listen to. The instrumentals didn't particularly captivate me. Starless was worse. I liked In The Court of the Crimson King (an album I had by them already) but have cut my losses there.

Yes - early library <G>: Can't say I was dissapointed totally by any CD but parts of some certainly left alot to be desired! Especially Disc 2 of Tales of Topographic Oceans.

I just got home from the Kansas/Styx concert at the Dallas Starplex Amphitheatre, and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed!

I missed Blue Oyster Cult who opened the entire Freedom Fest show around 4:00 pm. Came in about 1/3 of the way through the Kansas set. Whoever was bragging about how good the sound was for Kansas wouldn't have had too many good things to say about the sound today. Much of their set sounded like it was being run through a Leslie speaker cabinet. By the encore, they had fine tuned it pretty much. As musicians, Kansas kicked ass as usual.

The real suprise came when the Styx set began. This tour is their "Return to Paradise Theater". It was quite a production, with lots of history and chat between the songs. They even did a 4 song "Unplugged" section where they pulled out some of their old Cornerstone. Sounded great. Unlike other dates on this tour, both James Young and Tommy Shaw's guitar tones were excellent. Vocals from Dennis DeYoung and band were also dead on.

The best part came right before their last song, when the Freedom Fest people started let the fireworks rip loose over the amphitheatre. What a sight...sorry all the people under the bandshell couldn't see this.

I spend much of the evening noticing how much the sound of bands like Kansas and Styx has molded my tastes towards music such as Dream Theater's. Killer keyboard work from both bands....all and all, a very enjoyable evening.

    Happy July 4th!!

Personally, I like the growling on Symbols of Time. That's the way I like my death growls. Infrequent and for emphasis. I think they should have done it more often on the album.

CD's bought unheard (on a group level):

Magellan Fates Atheist Bolt Thrower (grin, I was a WH40k freak for a while)

and a few others, I'm sure. I've bought many albums by groups I know without having heard any songs from that particular release before. Eg: Awake, WDADU, ACoS, anything but I&W by DT, any other fates album after Parallels (the 1st I bought) most magna carta stuff, pretty much anything I buy these days falls under this category. Luckily, my local CD store lets me listen in the store before buying, so this may diminish in the future.

You know, in reading that over, it really doesn't say mcuhm does it?

I like food puns. If you don't, you are evile (yes, with two 'e's) humorless and must be destroyed.

I happened to be there (Nottingham). I am pretty sure that there ain't any tapes of this show. There were only 50 to 60 people and most of them not really DT fans. James was really pissed off that night as one of the people in the front (obviously drunk) started to scream during the mellow parts of Surrounded. James walked off the stage and did not return until 30 minutes later. The rest of the band played some instrumentals and Mike walked to the front of the stage and started to sing Surrounded, hehehe. I think this could be one of the reasons that DT doesn't play that much in England anymore (with the exception of London).

Also refering to songs names by ACROMYN, does it really save "THAT" much time. I listen to music I don't disect it. I remember by name or composer or group (in the case of CLASSICAL I remeber by album cover and/or label), please Dream Theater doesn'y get "THAT" verbose with the titles of thier songs nor do most other bands, list 'em out at full length. But > it's refreshing to see so many new and different bands being discussed here, > bands i previously never heard of and still haven't heard anything by, such > as Echolyn, Superior, Shadow Gallery, et. al.

    Maybe this will help:

    Echolyn:

They are a symphonic neo-progresive band that has a Gentle Giant, early Genesis influence. They play complex and well syncopated rhythms. Their vocals are very "heavy" in the sense that they harmonize a lot and have three-part vocal harmonies. Their vocals are very Queen-like and if you can handle "Bohemian Rhapsody" then you can handle their vocals. Their overall sound isn't heavy, as in "heavy metal". The keyboardist uses a good piano sound and sometime a ELPish keyboard sound. Try out _As the World_ which is their third album. I initially liked the title track when I first bought it, and listened about 15 secs. of each track and thought that I wouldn't get into this. Since that time, this is one of my favorite albums and my favorite band.

    Superior:

I just got this a few days ago (thanks Jason Skewes) and I fully reccomend this to every jammer. They have that heavy Awake guitar sound, excellent production, good keys. Jammers if you were disappointed with Metallica's Load, drop it, and get this album. It has good heavy, melodic guitar riffs and the keyboard playing is reminicent of Savatage's.

    Shadow Gallery:

This band sound like Savatage with some DT passages. The keyboardist is excellent. I lent "Carved in Stone" to a big Savatage fan and he immediately ordered it. Personally, SG is a good band, but I have my complaints. As one jammer best put it: "SG is like a cheeseburger. There is a lot of meat, but some cheese." The vocalist is good similar to Goeff Tate, but the background vocals are annoying (cheesy) to me. It almost ruins the whole song. I would get this, almost all jammers would agree.

    Walter.
