I've purchased many a CD without ever hearing it before...here are some of
    the higlights...

Atomic Opera - For Madmen Only

I'd only heard that they were from Texas and a "brother group"
to both King's X and Galactic Cowboys. This remains to be one of
my prized CD buys (especially since it's out of print now).

    echolyn - as the world

I bought this from a guy on the Internet for $8. I basically went
out on a limb by what I'd heard here on the Ytsejam. Now I can't
wait for "When Sweet Turns Sour"...

    Fates Warning - Parallels

I'd never heard of this group until the Ytsejam- funny how that
happens. I found this at a used CD shop and loved it. It took a
while to get used to, but it's still in rotation.

    Galactic Cowboys - Galactic Cowboys
Galactic Cowboys - Space In Your Face

I kept hearing so much about this band...so much. I'd never even
heard about them. I posted that I was looking for anything by
these guys, and some guy sold me both of 'em. Now they're my
favorite band. And they got me into bands like KX (which I sort
            of pushed aside until then).

    King's X - Dogman

Shortly after buying GC (and I mean shortly...like 2 or 3 days), I
went to my local CD store and bought Dogman. I'd heard KX before,
but never really paid much attention to them. I swear, I've gotten
so much good music since 1994.

    Dream Theater - Awake

I bought both Awake and IAW about a week after Awake came out.
I bought them based on what I'd heard from friends (I saw Mike's
LiT drum solo at a friend's house and was blown away), and a 30 sec
soundfile of PMU. And since then I've been a Y'Jammer...

    Later,
    Dan

I mentioned a top 50 prog album list that was on the prog newsgroup a while

original, but apparently I didn't note them when I copied it.

This is what is printed in the liner notes to the new West Side Story
    album concerning "The Rumble"

    13. Prelude to THE RUMBLE 2:21
featuring CHICK COREA, piano solo improvisation

    14. THE RUMBLE 8:03
(conceived as a "Rumble" between Jazzers & Rockers by David Pack)
featuring STEVE VAI'S MONSTERS & CHICK COREA'S ELEKTRIC BAND

    Steve Vai's Monsters:
    Steve Vai, guitar
    Simon Phillips, drums
    John Pena, bass
David Paich & Greg Phillinganes, keyboards
    Lenny Castro, percussion

    Chick Corea's Elektric Band:
    Chick Corea, Rhodes & synths
    David Weckl, drums'
    James Earl, bass
    Frank Gambale, guitar
    Eric Marienthal, sax
    Joe Porcaro, percussion

    (liner notes stop here)
This track was recorded entirely live at Oceanway Studio 1 in Hollywood in
February of 1995. It's really good, but unless it's ACoS, one track
isn't justification for buying an entire CD. The other good track is
"Prologue/Jet Song" by Brian Setzer & friends. Little Richard sounds more like
a fag than he ever has before. Everything else is Trisha Yearwood, Natalie
    Cole, Michael McDonald, etc.

oh yeah...I had never heard anything off of this particular CD before I
    bought it, either :)

    >other OLD bands that are rated highly for nostalgia's sake.

I think that I forgot to say that this was a generalization. Oh well, I
think I'll say that now. IT WAS JUST A GENERALIZATION. :)

    > The funny think about this is that there is no reason for a
    >pecking order..

I totally agree with that, but I think we must face reality, and accept that
not all prog fans are as open to other bands as us Ytsejammers.

    >25 years ago people said Yes was pretentious and
    >self-indulgent. A few years later this was said about Rush (esp.
    >Hemispheres). Still later about Dream Theater. The fact is that most of
    >these bands ARE pretentious to a certain degree, esp. the ones at the very
    >top of the pecking order.

Yes, very very true, yesterday, I took a look at a certain Yes FAQ and when
they approached Robert Fripp about replacing Peter Banks, he said something
to the effect of, "I don't want to join a band of dinosaurs." This was back
in 1970 I believe. Yes had only been together 2 years! Wow, two years, and
you're a dinosaur! Robert Fripp is about the most conceited person in prog,
maybe that's the reason that King Crimson is highly respected?

    BTW, I still like KC, it's just Fripp's attitude I don't like.

Well, ok, enough of my rambling.

I picked up something today that I think is definately very cool and
I would imagine, pretty rare too. I just wanted to know if anyone else
has anything like this or knows of others in existance...

It's a promo copy of WDADU ON CASSETTE!! The front cover is all in just
text and it lists the songs on the album and has the Mechanic Records
logo. The spine says the name of the band and the title and the catalog
number etc. The little back piece says "For Promotion Only - Ownership
Reseverd By MCA - Sale Is Unlawful" and it also has the address of
    MCA records.

The J-card is just a single piece (no foldouts or anything). The only
thing on the inside is a B&W pic of the band (including CD) but it is not
one of the ones you see in the regular compact disk version. And there
is also a little purple Majesty logo on it too. And of course printed
on the tape are the songs on each side and the Mechanic logos and stuff.

The cover is also AUTOGRAPHED!! Now of course I can't verify this in
any way but I do believe the guy I got it from. He seemed like a
pretty cool DT fan. It has John Myungs sig on it. I compared it too
a recent autograph of his that I have from the Awake tour and its a bit
different but I would guess that someones autograph can change a bit
from 1988 to 1994. It also has Kevin Moores sig on it. I don't have
a Kev autograph so I can't really tell you much about it.

Well, I thought it was a pretty cool find and I wanted to share my joy
    with my fellow jammers. :)

howdy folx, i was just perusing the latest mailing from BMG and noticed that according to them, AoC is "nearing platinum." uh huh....

so who's got the latest sales figures for all our boy's work?

now for the Rush part. as many of u may or may not remember, i'm not a Rush fan. well, not until about a month ago. i picked up Hemispheres on a whimp, remembering it as one of the albums recomended to folx who keep asking "which Rush album should i buy?" so i bought and i listened and i *liked* :) then, i was chattin w/ mom and dad and come to find out that they listened to Rush back in the 70's while i was growing up. this was somewhat interesting as i had known that they listened to the Moody Blues, Kansas, Foreigner, Toto, Yes, Genesis, just to name a few.

i'm now in the process of picking up more Rush :)

    Heeeyyllloooo,

Am I the only one who thinks that playing Quake (the new ID Software game) and listening to Awake is a good combination? Awake just seems like a good combination with Quake to me because Quake is kind of a dark game and Awake is dark album. If you haven't tried it yet, do it!!! I guarantee that you'll play better! He he he! :)

Oh yeah, why does Rush's "Freewill" sound so damn good over the radio? When I listen to it on CD, it seems to lose some of that magic.

Oh well, perhaps this was all just a brain fart. :)

anyways, picked up some CDs recently =) Fates Warning's No Exit is veryyyyyyy cool. kind of a thrash-sense to it even :) the only thing i dont like is that The Ivory Gate Of Dreams, a 21 minute song with 8 sections, is divided into 8 tracks...... while on one hand being able to go to certain parts of the song are nice, it just makes you feel like listening to 8 different songs... not one big one. another thing i noticed- a section in IGoD is called Innocence... so is a section in ACoS :) thasallfornow ~Rip

    I love people like this.

Number one, the demos are not "lost treasures." Any real DT fan has them.

Number two, even semi-DT fans know the origin on their name...

I love how people like this think that when they arrive in Rome for the first time, that the Romans dont know what they are doing. Look guy, when in Rome, dont make a fool of yourself by telling us something we already know...

Oh, and mandatory pitch for Mikes CDs...Its just like the Superior CD. Everyone raves about them, but you never get around to it. JUST DO IT!

    Later.

    Jon

Is this jam the moderated or unmoderated one, because it seems to have a lot of junk on it the past several months since the switch??!!

    Dear Jammers,

Hey there! Here's a reminder about the YtseCon III! Here goes:

The YtseCon III will take place on Saturday, October 12th at the La Guardia Marriot. The cost per person will be $20. This will cover expenses such as the conference room and other miscellaneous stuff.

I have spoken with Dream Theater's management, and Dream Theater are already aware of what is going on and they are pretty much gonna be there, so this should be an event that you don't want to miss!

If you plan on staying at the hotel, please contact me at jc309@columbia.edu, or give me a call at (516) 674-4828. I have made arrangements with the hotel and my travel agent, and we reserved a 75 room block. It's $100 per room per night, so it's okay if you guys got together and split the cost. I will be collecting the money, then sending a huge check to the travel agent. If you do plan on staying, please contact me and try to send the money to me by August 2nd! We need to know where we stand on rooms by the 2nd, just in case we need to return rooms. As an added incentive, if you register for the YtseCon III by the 2nd, you will receive a free YTseCon III t-shirt for yourself and one for everyone that you bring along with you. From all of the ideas that I've received from the t-shirt staff, I bet that this shirt is gonna look awesome!

We are guarenteed the 75 rooms now if you send in your reservation by the 2nd, but after that we will see how many rooms we filled up and afterwards if we don't need as many, we will end up returning rooms. But, we need to know by the 2nd, otherwise if we don't get back to the hotel by a certain date and do not fill up the rooms by October 12th, I will end up getting slapped with an $8000 charge. In essence, that would suck royally!

BTW, for those of you whom I've already spoken to about the checks, there has been a change! Please don't write it out to my name personally. I've set up a business account for the YtseCon convention, so instead, please have the checks payable to:

    YtseCon III

    and have them sent to:

Jeff Chew 350 Broadway, suite 703 New York, NY 10013

But, before you send me the checks, please contact me so I can know that I'll be expecting it. I will give you a phone call once the check makes it to my office. So, when you send the check to me, also give me your phone number and e-mail address so I can contact you.

If you need airfare to the YtseCon III, you can contact the travel agency Rich Worldwide Travel at 1-800-431-1130, and when you call, let them know that you are going to the 'Dream Theater convention'. They will know what you mean. It's an 800 number, so it won't hurt to call to find out how much it will cost, etc.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at jc309@columbia.edu, or call me at (516) 674-4828. That's all from here. Hope to hear from you guys!

    Yours, Jeff =)
