This observation shouldn't come as a surprise to ANYONE, really. Prog
fans tend to have pretty strong feelings about their faves, and when
they don't like a band, they REALLY don't like a band. (Unlike
mallternative kidz or mainstream psheep, prog-fans' reasons for liking
and disliking bands can actually make sense from a musical
    standpoint.:))

Marillion "too commercial"? Sheesh. I can only ever recall hearing
"Kayleigh" on the radio a few times. Granted, Atlanta radio sucks out
loud, but I never thought they got much of a label push to begin with.

Tee-minus a few days, hopefully, 'til Superior is signed! Congrats,
Bernd and all! Kidz, their BEHIND CD is the best CD I've heard so
far this year, and the best prog-metal CD I've heard since AWAKE. I
knew it was Only a Matter of Time before they got snapped up. :)

    --Paul
..almost recovered from Dragon*Con '96 and looking into bands
for '97. Maybe GWAR again, and Anthrax and Misfits both want to play.
I'd like to see a prog band on the bill, too. :)

check this out. i should have brought this to the attention of you all long ago.

now that q rock is history, we're all whining and mourning the loss of decent radio, we are left to ponder what's next. well, i have a solution to that equation. ny jammers, when you're feeling blue, set your dials to 1560 am (not fm), and it will all go away. if anyone takes me up on this, i want private resp;onses (or public- whatever). thank you.

mike backof (i think), who called me "a wild kobayashi" (loved that), mentioned to me about the separate crimson/reid shows. can you please email me with the url for the thingy again. thanks.

speaking of, anyone know what the hell happened to thought industry?

re: sara mclachlan. i really dig what i've heard from her. i see not much comparison between her and the piano-girl. funny, i believe i once heard sara's music as "pussy music." but yeah, to the boys and girls who check this out, dig it.

i saw a soundtrack to "west side story", a new one (it had to be), and there was a song whose band credits reads "chick corea's eletrik band vs. steve vai's monsters". has anyone any idea of what that is? please enlighten me and/or us.

thank you. that is all. good night. ***************************************************************** david kobayashi the wild and magical koba

Someone was talking about buying CD's without ever hearing them, and someone else asked if anyone would put Dream Theater CD's in that category... well, yeah, count me in for that one.

See, like a year & a half ago, I was playing piano in this regional jazz concert in high school, and before the show, we were all chilling out talking & listening to music & stuff. And this bass player had a tape of I&W, and he told me that DT was this really cool, very technical band, and he played me the beginning of Under A Glass Moon.

I thought it was pretty freakin' cool, very precise... although the odd thing is, I distinctly remember saying, "This sounds like Mr. Bungle." Yeah. I thought (and still think) the beginning part sounded like the Bungle song "My Ass Is On Fire." No joke. (In UAGM, the double-time diminished-chord part, then the palm-muted main riff right after it before the lyrics start-- they seem right out of the Bungle song. Maybe I'm thinking of "Love Is A Fist" though, I forget.)

So a few weeks later, I was at the record store, and they didn't have I&W. They did, however, have Awake, and since that had a 1995 date on it, I was like "Cool, a newer one," and I bought it. Hadn't heard one song. And that remains my favorite DT disc (and one of my favorite discs period).

(And a little footnote to this: a few months ago I read an interview with Portnoy, and in it he said that Mr. Bungle's first album is one of his favorite albums. Nice. Oh yeah, that was another one that I bought without ever hearing-- doesn't get much radio or MTV airplay, ya know.)

Maybe you cared, maybe you didn't.

    Out,

    Hello Jammers,

Jeremy Hyde brought up a "Prog Pecking Order." Now on rec.music.progresssive I would say that more often than not, people have their favorites, but it seems that "more difficult" = "more progressive" at times. I wouldn't necessarily agree with this assessment, but it seems to be a trend among the die-hard prog people. This is how I would rank the bands based upon what I have read, not what I believe:

Universe Zero, 5UUs, Magma, Miriodor (all RIO bands) Gentle Giant, Gong, Mahavishnu Orchestra (non RIO obscure original bands) King Crimson (favorite of the r.m.p crowd of the more "popular" bands) Genesis (their post-Duke work is generally frowned upon) Yes (a lot of people hate everything after Relayer) ELP (really went down hill after a while, keyboard fans like them) Jethro Tull (earlier albums were very progressive) Marillion, Asia, IQ, Gryphon, Starcastle, Ozric Tentacles (early "derivative" bands) Anekdoten, Glass Hammer, Iluvatar (later "neo-prog") Rush (generally hated in prog circles, they tend adapt to their environment and not pioneer, this annoys prog die-hards) Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater (prog-metal bands)

    General Threads

    1. Originality is awarded. If you make up your own sound or borrow from someone that no one has heard of, then you are terribly cool in prog circles. Use of non-standard (guitar, bass, drums, keys) instruments in a band adds to your coolness.

    2. If you are one of the original popular bands from the 1970s prog circles then you are thought to be in the hearts of many, a good band. If a band is made up of former members of these bands then they are cool no matter how bad you sound or poppy. (ie Asia, sorry guys I can't stand anything after the first album, a band that should have been better)

    3. If you are an original derivative band you are cooler than later generations because whenn people were looking for more music to get into, they found this band, "Hey, this singer sounds just like Jon Anderson", we have the same thing with Geoff Tate in prog-metal, "This singer sounds just like Geoff Tate!" You know what I mean. Bands like Starcastle (Yes), Bi Kyo Ran (King Crimson), IQ (Genesis) completely copies that sound of a band in an era and made new music in that style. The beginning of Progressive being used as a musical style and not as a term used to describe the pushing of the musical envelope.

    4. Rush, the "special case" band. They started off copying Led Zeppelin, then moved on to Yes in the late 1970s, then to The Police in the early 1980s, then the keyboard pop movement in the middle 1980s, then when keyboards were going out, they released Presto with fewer keys and an acoustic sound, now in the 1990s they cater to the grunge, heavy movement. Their new album will probably sound like Dave Matthews Band or something.

    5. Prog-metal, since many of the band members are fans of metal bands (Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Rush) and of progressive music (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd) you get some neat combinations of sounds. Die hard prog fans dismiss all metal (I think this has something to do with an aversion for Kiss, don't really know) as a wasted genre, so interesting prog-metal bands who are in pioneer mode can be overlooked. Voivod, Cynic, Watchtower have made some creative waves. A lot of the bands in this genre are blasted for being fans of Rush.

Personal Note: Rush got me into progressive music, I don't like ELP or Asia, King Crimson is one of my favorite bands, as are a lot of prog-metal bands, all of this is based upon observation, difficult IMO does not equal more "progressive" Bands like Braindance "atmospherics, gothic, metal, jazz drumming", Porcupine Tree "modernization of Floyd with the heaviness of NIN at times", Boud Deun "heavy jazz fusion with rifs from all musical styles and technical superiority", Voivod "cyber-metal with technical wonder and strangeness" are bands that are doing real work in prog these days.

Hope some of you thought this ramble was interesting, this comes from 3+ years of reading usenet groups and several prog mailing lists.

    Later,

    Mike

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Bach and Beethoven didn't meet, since Bach was dead before Beethoven was born. :)

Does anybody out there listen to Mortal? They're pretty cool, kind of a thrash/industrial thing happening. See ya,

I mean commercial from a prog standpoint, not a mainstream radio standpoint. There is a group of prog fans who don't consider anything worthy of prog status if it isn't mind-bogglingly complex. For them Marillion, and all the other neo-prog bands, just don't measure up.

    Course I think that's crap, so . . .

hey all you ytsejammers...i was browsing the web and happened across a little problem at the Elektra Home Page...well, it seems that they have the artists listed, and DT is there, so i clicked and it whisked me away to their page (courtesy of Elektra). on this page, it lists several web sites related to DT, one of which is an address for those fans who wish to subscribe to the Ytsejam...only it sends it to the arastar.com address. this might be causing some of the confusion with subscription, and if it isn't now, who's to say it won't later on? well, i myself am NOT, in any way, shape or from, very computer literate, so i have NO clue how to handle this slight misunderstanding. would someone please contact someone that can help this? it might prevent future confusion on the 'jam...(http://www. elektra.com) just a concerned jammer...
