As usual, I am a bit late with jumping on one of the band wagons
(a.k.a. "threads"), in this case the "unheard albums".
So here are some of mine, in some kind of non-alfabetical
    order...

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

Never heard Metallica before, not a single song. Bought this
album because I was going to see Queensryche and Metallica
'co-headline' (November 1988) and I reckoned I had to know *some*
Metallica before going. It's still my favourite album ever made
by these guys. It blew me right away and launched Metallica at
the top of my personal bands top x (until Dream Theater kicked
them off in 1992 when I heard "Pull me Under").

     Carmine Appice's Guitar Zeus

An album by the drummer with songs written for specific guitar
heroes (Gilbert, May, Malmsteen, Batten, etc.). Simply had to get
this because I'm really into Malmsteen. The songs are OK. The
    Malmsteen song really shreds!

Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder

Never really knew this band, but bought the album because, well,
*anyone* should have a Floyd album (a bit like Dire Straits,
really, and DT of course :-)). And I like it, though it misses
some of the aggression of the studio tracks I heard later (with
    Roger Waters still among them).

All the albums of Malmsteen, Rush, Steve Vai, Metallica, Dream
Theater (including Mike Bahr's bootlegs), My Dying Bride,
Entombed, Gwar, Flotsam and Jetsam, Pentagram, Paradise Lost,
Pan-Thy-Monium, Queensryche, Joe Satriani and Jean Michel Jarr
    (yes, an odd one out).

I just buy the stuff to remain complete. It used to be exactly
the same for Iron Maiden, but when I heard Blaze Bayley I bayled
out :-) And "Live Donington" didn't have a Riggs cover and it
had been on radio already and I already had the two "Real x One"
CDs already so I let that go by as well...

I'd like to wrap this up by listing a few of my "firsts" (an
even older band wagon, I know)....
1st LP - Kiss "Destroyer"; 1st CDs - Queensryche "Operation
Mindcrime" and Jean Michel Jarre's "Cities in Concert". Never
    bought any tapes, really...

Too much drivel already, and only limited DT content. Sorry for
    that.

Well, some interesting notions have been tossed around about prog music. I'll take one I agree with, for the most part, with amendments, to give some notion of my prog weltanschauung:

    >From: Mike Backof <mbacko1@umbc.edu> >Hello Jammers, > >Jeremy Hyde brought up a "Prog Pecking Order." Now on >rec.music.progresssive I would say that more often than not, people have >their favorites, but it seems that "more difficult" = "more progressive" >at times. I wouldn't necessarily agree with this assessment, but it >seems to be a trend among the die-hard prog people. This is how I would >rank the bands based upon what I have read, not what I believe: > >Universe Zero, 5UUs, Magma, Miriodor (all RIO bands) >Gentle Giant, Gong, Mahavishnu Orchestra (non RIO obscure original bands) >King Crimson (favorite of the r.m.p crowd of the more "popular" bands) >Genesis (their post-Duke work is generally frowned upon) >Yes (a lot of people hate everything after Relayer) >ELP (really went down hill after a while, keyboard fans like them) >Jethro Tull (earlier albums were very progressive) >Marillion, Asia, IQ, Gryphon, Starcastle, Ozric Tentacles (early > "derivative" bands) >Anekdoten, Glass Hammer, Iluvatar (later "neo-prog") >Rush (generally hated in prog circles, they tend adapt to their > environment and not pioneer, this annoys prog die-hards) >Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater (prog-metal bands)

    1) Grouping Mahavishnu Orchestra with Gong and Gentle Giant, I think, is a little odd. MO is definitely for fusiony than the other two -- closer to Brand X than Gong.

    2) Ozric Tentacles as "derivitive?" Of who?

    3) One cannot emphasize enough how NO progressive group seems to remain popular well into their career, with the possible exception of King Crimson. Virtually all of the older bands that have remained on the scene -- Genesis, Yes, Tull, Pink Floyd, even Marillion -- are vilified in a.m.p./r.m.p. for recent "pop" leanings.

    >4. Rush, the "special case" band. They started off copying Led Zeppelin, >then moved on to Yes in the late 1970s, then to The Police in the early >1980s, then the keyboard pop movement in the middle 1980s, then when >keyboards were going out, they released Presto with fewer keys and an >acoustic sound, now in the 1990s they cater to the grunge, heavy >movement. Their new album will probably sound like Dave Matthews Band or >something.

Yes and no. There's something along the lines of "Orthodox prog" -- people for whom prog is about "Close To The Edge," Gentle Giant, and Pendragon, NOT anything which leans strongly toward rock. Rush is clearly the special case for reasons very familiar to people on this mailing list -- by their second album, Rush was clearly charting a progressive course, but a truly aggressive one. Cream, Yes, and Zeppelin fell together, which created a heaviness unknown to prog, with the less-extreme exception of Tull (Deep Purple is in this general direction, as well, but not in the camp, per se). But there's a tremendous disservice paid to the band in the above description. They've always been a pioneering band because of their juxtaposition of sounds. A lot of people associate prog with classical music, but Rush has traditionally informed their hard rock sound with different sounds: Reggae (as early as "Vital Signs," which DOESN'T sound so much like The Police), Funk (even earlier: witness "Cinderella Man" -- that tune's older than the Chili Peppers and Fishbone), Jazz (all over the place, particularly in terms of chordal structure), Country ("Cold Fire"), World (check out Neil's Playing on "Heresy"). They pioneer, to my way of thinking...but not to everyone's. And the quote above is clearly expressive on the dominant opinion of Orthodox proggers (which is why I've waged my share of wars on a.m.p. and r.m.p.).

    >5. Prog-metal, since many of the band members are fans of metal bands >(Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Rush) and >of progressive music (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd) you get some neat >combinations of sounds. Die hard prog fans dismiss all metal (I think >this has something to do with an aversion for Kiss, don't really know) as >a wasted genre, so interesting prog-metal bands who are in pioneer mode >can be overlooked. Voivod, Cynic, Watchtower have made some creative >waves. A lot of the bands in this genre are blasted for being fans of >Rush.

I'd take this even further. The Orthodox proggers don't seem to like Dream Theater or Queensryche any more than Rush. In fact, they may be even more vilified, though there's a camp where Voivod, Cynic, Watchtower are appreciated, along with bands like Primus, King's X, Atomic Opera, Galactic Cowboys, and Fates Warning. That camp, though, has a lot more to do with this newsgroup than the Progressive orthodoxy....

Okay, that's blabby enough for the moment....

Dream Theater ... Prog Metal or Metal Jazz??

I just love when dt goes off on those funky jazz tangents ... i.e. ending of TTT live (antiquities), especially the end of TLF (LiT, WDaTU) ... petrucci and everyone else has this great jazzy style ... makes you wonder why they never put any of it in their songs. I swear .. i love it when petrucci starts throwing sax lines around on guitar .. it's the great. grrrrrooooovy ...

I haven't read a 'jam in a few days here, so I don't know off hand if Steve Johnson has covered this yet. I'm sure he's said something about it, but I'll post this anyway, because it's rather important.

Steve has set aside a group of 15 rooms at a Days Inn in Chicago for the Mytsecon. These rooms are NOT reserved. They are only set aside for us until the 12th of July, four days from now. At this point, we have a group rate of $84 per night for double rooms (2-4 people). Ok, here's the important part:

If FIVE of those rooms are not reserved by credit card as of the 12th of July (this Friday), we LOSE the group rate!

What that means is that the prices on the rooms jump back up to $120+ per night, essencially screwing those of us who are staying in the hotel. We need anyone who is planning on attending the Con to call immediately and reserve your room with a credit card.

If you are thinking of rooming with 3 others, concider making it two others (3 in the room). It would cost less per person for 3 people at the group rate than it would for 4 people at the regular rate, and we'll have a better chance of filling the rooms up.

Please, DO NOT just think that someone else will do it so you may as well wait. This deadline has been there since he first set the rooms aside however long ago, and there still has not been ONE reservation! So please call today and make your reservations, because we have to have at least 5 by Friday to keep the group rate. Don't put this off!

Ok, the details. There are 15 rooms reserved under the name 'Steve Johnson' for the 26th and 27th of July. You need to call (312)525-7010 before Friday, and reserve one of those rooms. If you have any questions you can talk to Kat or Cindy, the managers at the Days Inn.

If you have any general MytseCon questions, you can email myself or Steve Johnson at svjohnson@amoco.com I'll give whatever help I can to try to reduce Steve's load, but he's the one planning all of this. If I can't help, I'll point you to him. :)

We all owe Steve a big thanks for the effort he's put into planning this and getting things together for the Con. It's a lot more work than most people seem to think, and Steve has done a great job.

Once again, please call the Days Inn and reserve a room before Friday for the sake of all of us that have to stay at the hotel. Thanks. :)

Congrats Bernd!!! That means I can actually order the disc through a local store in the Toronto area! YEAH!!!!! When are they going to officially begin distributing your disc? That way, I'll know when to order it from HMV. Again, way to go! I know how hard it is to get signed by any label, not to mention a large one like NOISE. I do have one question though. Which one of you has the "Superior" behind? Just kidding...my wife made me ask that question. :)

Before I say bye-bye, I do have one request.

Could we PLEASE keep the Base 64 and UUENCODED data OUT OF THE JAM!!!!! This stuff is aggravating as hell to skip through. If any of it is patch information for synths, it really should be sent via e-mail rather than through this medium. Thanks for your attention.

    Cheers,

    Hey Kids!

KTS (Kiss The Stone) has an online address to order bootlegs.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Boot labels, KTS is one of if not the best quality boot dealers in the world. And ordering direst from them would be cheaper than getting it from a shop. I don't know how much since I haven't been to their page yet (I got a brochure from Media Play of all places), but I'm sure it's around $20 per disc. Anyway, takee a looksie when you get a chance.

It couldn't have happened to a more exciting prog-metal band. Really. :)

So, now the big question is....WHEN? When can we see this gem of a CD on American store shelves, ready to beguile the dumb American record-buying public into getting something (gasp) mind-opening? :)

It's not as if Noise has much work to do, here; the CD as-is is the best band-produced CD package I've ever seen. (You shoulda seen the reactions of some of Atlanta's longtime band members upon seeing it. :))

hi there. some news to pass on to the jam:

i contacted manny's today, and here is the info on the jp clinic.

the clinic will be held monday, july 29th at 7:30 pm at s.i.r. studios. the address is 520 w. 25th street (between 10th and 11th ave's.) and the price will be $8 bucks at the door. i asked if they sell anything in advance and the guy said no. so there it is....

my cd sale: i made the mistake of including the ryche cd, but it is gone already, so don't ask for that one. sorry. i have, however, added some new titles, and i'd like to get rid of these and as many others asap. the list again:

vai- sex and religion last action hero soundtrack megadeth- "sweating bullets" single magna carta yes tribute public enemy- apocalypse 91...the enemy strikes black alan parsons project- eve symphonic music of yes anacrusis- screams and whispers the best of emerson, lake and palmer higher learning soundtrack guns n roses- use your illusion 2 fight- immrotal sin single (autographed!!!! this is kinda special) the ultimate bbc collection- jimi hendrix 1967 (very weird import) prince- an american in paris (86 boot, another import)

so any interests, again email me please. thanks.

anyways, a friend of mine on tnms (rush newsletter) told me that he read that thr rush tribute will NOT be sold in the us. anyone know what's up with that? i'm not trying to start a rumor, i only want info from someone who knows.

well, mad props to to bernd and the superior band. though i know nothing of the band or its music, i think it's cool for someone to bust their ass and get reqarded with a record deal, however big or small it may be. so once again, mad props, and keep the faith.

i was on the drive home from work today and started thinking about a cool song by a cool band named dream theatre (ha! fuck you if don't like my spelling! hahah!) named "lie", only i imagined it being sung by marilyn manson! wow. i almost crashed onto the northern state and died, but i lived to tell you about the clinc and this story.

well, peace out. out to see some lightning.

love and roses. ***************************************************************** david kobayashi lover of all that is musical
