Sorry about the NDTC, but I think Death is closer to prog than
Metallica and it is certainly more relevant than the coding garbage that I
first thought was a computer error.
Awhile ago on here, someone said that Death had been dissolved and
broken up. I thought it was a rumor. Lately, I have really gotten into
this band and that disappoints me. Then I read in this weird music thing
that Chuck is working with vocalist B.C. Richards on a side project called
"Contol Denied".
If anyone knows what the exact story is, I would love to know. Is
Death over? Or is this just a side-project? Also, I can't find anything on
this great band. Do they have a mailing list, newsgroup, or homepage? I
can't seem to find anything. Please help!!!!

Howdy Kids!!!!!!!
I just wanted to add my two cents into the debate over wether or not a
song should be broken up. What if you only have the cassete version of an
album? In that case you are at the mercy of what the liner notes say. I made
a copy of "No Exit" for a friend and as far as he was concerned IGoD was one
long song. I prefer the songs to be broken up on CD however, because it
makes it easier to practice to on my drums. If I want to hear "Presentation"
from 2112 I have to fastforward the CD for a while to reach that point,
which can be a nuisance. I just hope the song by Fates Warning is a great
one, that is really all that matters.
Vacation in three days!!!! You all know what happened last time I went

I'm wondering where "2112" is in that list. Then there's "Supper's

a couple.

1.Yeah, but there IS a huge difference in maturity. It's as if FW said one day "ok let's do something special, let's stick riffs and stretch the song as far as possible". You stretch it to 23 mins, but in "Ivory", this doesn't happen smoothly. There are cracks, i.e. for me "Ivory" is many songs more than just one. In ACoS, no cracks. Crack-free song. Basta.
2. Went to see Joe Satriani gig yesterday. That was pretty cool, although solo guitar groups isn't really my piece of cake. Anyway, I was very surprised and even more delighted to see on the bass no less than STUART HAMM. I'd heard a lot on this guy, but he just blew me away (beautiful 7 min solo during which he really got hold of the audience; more than Satch during the whole show). I've got serious bassing to do ahead...It was interesting to see that the type of people that go to see instrumental bands react very differently from common fans. In the sense that there's less communion, both ways. This is just IMO based on one gig. If anyone wants to counter this, please do.
3. I'm starting to miss IBMMAIL

You mean people find that White Zombie-like scumbag slops look better? Come on! At least DT on LiT wear silk shirts and decent stuff, and if people think that's bad looking, they can just fuck off. I just don't get it that people can't go beyond looks and go for the music. Satriani shaved his head: so what the fuck? He wore sunglasses during 90% of the gig: so what the fuck? Close your eyes and listen to the music. And the reason, if any, that DT is unpopular (that's a very subjective statement BTW), is more because DT plays music that's FAR TOO INTELLIGENT for such dumbfucks. Dammit. Sorry for the foul language, no offense intended, Mich'.

This isn't a difference in maturity. The transitions in IGOD are obvious, but also extremely effective. Each time a new part begins the adrenaline starts flowing all over again, and the song never drags for an instant. It's the way they wrote it. It's as if FW said one day, "okay, let's kick someone's ass, and then when they think we're done kicking their ass, let's start kicking it harder, and then when they think we're easing up, let's start kicking even harder. Then we'll be quiet for a couple minutes and let them catch their breath, and then we'll kick their ass harder than it's ever been kicked before." Ivory Gate is probably the best heavy metal song ever written, IMO, which is why Fates didn't bother playing metal anymore after No Exit, and just invented whatever it is they're playing now.
The transitions in ACOS are not all that smooth, either. Some of them are, but some are jarring (not that jarring is bad, oft times I like to be jarred.)
The difference in maturity is in the lyrics, and it's ACOS that comes up a bit short (sorry, I think Mike got way too heavy-handed here). To understand Ivory Gate you need to read the lyrics, think about them, probably even do some research. Whereas by the second time i heard the new version of ACOS I was thinking, fine, i'll sieze the day already, leave me alone.
(this is not to say I dislike ACOS. It's a really good song, and it even used to be a really great song.)

I'm sorry to say this, but Manowar's song (I guess it's the one on "Power of Steel") can't be considered (at least musically) as one song. There is not one leading theme in it. It's a cheat to call it one song.

That Trooper bass line is one helluva muscle-builder! You've gotta keep it real tight all the way through.

Are you sure you're not giving too much importance to the fact that it's just PHYSICALLY (somewhat artificially) partitioned? I mean, let's say you have a TAPE copy of a 45 min fw song. It holds together perfectly and you can't figure it out as being anything else than one song (sorry for my English, that sentence was a twister). Suppose now that you have that same material on CD some time later, partitioned (some one reason or another) in 8. Would you still keep that same (tape) entity in your mind, or would you SEEK to DIFFERENCIATE the 8 songs because you can skip 'em? See the point?

=46or Manowar, please refer to above. Concerning Rush, I'm a complete ignorant. So I didn't include 2112 because I simply don't know it. BTW, I'd appreciate any suggestions to start off with Rush, knowing that I'm a DT/FW fan. Concerning Iced Earth, I listened to one of their albums a long long time ago. Ever since, I didn't manage to get my hands on one. So, if you have any suggestions for this, I'd appreciate too (I'm also a great fan of Chuck's Death). Finally, I've never heard of Beefquad-X. How will they get a 80+ min song on a CD (except in mono)?

I totally agree. The problem is that it's the label who's gonna decide to snip out a 3-min single out of an otherwise (hopefully) coherent song.
>I think they should put >indexes in though. The Ivory Gate of Dreams is one of there best song >with Ray in the band.
OK. I can't say I'm for or against indexes. It depends so much on the song, IMO. Indexes are convenient, but I guess often go against the band's will.

Well, I attended the KISS show at The Pyramid in Memphis on Wednesday night. It was probably the best show I have every seen and I have seen quite a few concerts in the last 22-23 years. If you can still get tickets I would highly suggest going to the show, you will not be disappointed. KISS pulled out every trick they have ever pulled. The show was flawless both visually and musically (taking into account that KISS is NOT Dream Theater). Any problems Peter had with timing during the early shows have been corrected. But I agree that I could have played his drum solo (and I am a guitarist).
One warning. If a band called The Melvins are opening the show in your area you may want to consider showing up late!!!! They were without a doubt the worst band I have ever seen in my entire life. I am astounded that a piece of shit like that could ever get a record contract. Thank God they only played 30 minutes.
The set list for the show was slightly different from the one I received from Scott Cook. The songs were basically the same but the order has changed dramatically. If anyone wants a copy of the set list e-mail me.
DTC... I have read on the jam that at least some of the members of Dream Theater may be on the jam (I do not know if this is true). If so, how about a Petrucci clinic and a Dream Theater concert in the South. Maybe Nashville, Little Rock, hell even MEMPHIS. I would not mine driving several hours to see one but I can't drive to Boston, New York, etc.
