I think Awake tells a definite story, mostly about a person or people goin'
loony. Which is cool by me.

I haven't seen A Clockwork Orange. Yet. I have read the book, though, by
Anthony Burgess. From what I've heard, the old adage holds true and the
book is better than the movie. I loved the book. On that topic, I think "A
Mind Beside Itself" would be a good place to start for a soundtrack if the
    movie were ever redone.

As far as drugs, 8 of the top 10 in my brother's graduating class were
druggies. This isn't a good thing. But seriously, there are very few
great people who had no personality quirks. A friend told me that Ben
Franklin had (that they know of) some 72 illegitimate children. (Check
those numbers, someone) Jack Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were
womanizers. (These next two aren't necessarily wrong or right, I'm just
pointing them out. No offense intended) Much to the dismay of
conservatives, the Founding Fathers were not at all religious and rarely if
ever attended church. Most of the great Greek philosophers and scientists
were homosexual. Sigmund Freud was a coke addict, and prescribed it to
patients. Isaac Newton was a conceited asshole. That's all I can think of
now. Remember: what you think about this doesn't change their places in
    history, so show some tolerance.

Hah, WBCN? Good luck! The only luck we'll probably ever have in the boston area is WAAF, that's where I first heard PMU and TTT. However, by the time Awake came out they had already switched to an alternative format so I didn't hear Lie on the radio. Pantera and White Zombie played Dallas this past weekend and I heard something about White Zombie's set that I wanted to get confirmation on. This question is for anyone who has seen the recent Pantera / White Zombie shows (especially the Dallas one) or any White Zombie show. Does White Zombie play their set live or do they use a pre-recorded tape????

I heard a review about the Dallas show on a Dallas sports radio show. The two guys who do the show are friends of Pantera and were backstage at the show. They claim that they saw something back stage which indicates that the White Zombie set was pre-recorded.

I wouldn't wish anyone dead even to say I saw the last show. I dont know about you but I dont wish anyone dead. If you do that is pretty sad.

Just a few quick little corrections on the Night Ranger concert review...It was NOT their first date of the tour. Their first date was on June 30th at New George's in San Rafael with openers SEDONA. Then they went off to Japan for a few dates, then headed back to the Bay Area, hitting Petaluma first at Mystic's again with openers SEDONA. As for them playing their acoustic set, it was cool...especially since they played a few DAMN YANKEES tunes. And about cover tunes, yes they do play cover tunes for their encores. While at the New George's show we heard at soundcheck playing an AC/DC tune. So I doubt it was spontaneous. Ok, that's all...

Personally, I would avoid Cairo. I bought this disc as a US import last fall and was very disappointed. It is very keyboard driven, but is closer to traditional prog than you might like. The keyboard playing is not virtuoso by any means either. The guitar sound is weak and a little thin for my taste and the singer just doesn't have any emotion. If you are looking for any kind of emotional rush coming from powerful songs, you won't find it here. I really like Enchant on the Magna Carta label though. They have one studio record called A Blueprint of the World. It is co-produced by Steve Rothery of Marillion and there is a strong influence. Vocally, it is similar to 70s era Steve Walsh of Kansas. The drummer's use of his symbols and his high hat reminds me very much of Rush' Neil Peart. The songs are all well written and the mix is excellent with all instrumentation coming through cleanly. If you like old Genesis, Kansas and Marillion, you'll probably like these guys quite a bit.

Apparently, Kubrick felt that this was the way that England COULD become if social controls weren't enforced. I think I heard that in an interview with him in 1977, but since I was only 13 at the time, I could be mistaken. :) One thing that really drives me nuts about that movie. I find myself constantly trying to figure out what year the story takes place. I get this feeling that it may have been after some sort of major revolution since everything seems very run down in the suburban areas.

    >I'm not sure about that. I liked the movie, recognized it's importance in >the annals of film. But I wouldn't call it amazing. Maybe a 6 or 7 on a >scale to 10. I liked the book better....a lot of folks that favor the film >feel the book wimps out a little at the end. I'd say "A Clockwork Orange" >is an awful lot like "The Wall," with a soundtrack a cut lower. I suppose >it's a higher piece of art, and I'd certainly suggest that anyone who's not >seen it probably should, but there are several Kubrick flicks I like more.

I also find that there are a number of Stan's films that might be better. The boot camp scenes in Full Metal Jacket still give me the creeps. I have yet to experience ACO in print. I hope to pick it up later today. Your point about the soundtrack is well taken, but don't forget that this movie hit theaters in 1971. I actually think that the sterility of that synth score makes the society seem even more generic and disconnected. Actually, I used to have the soundtrack on vinyl in quad format. I can't remember what it sounded like though since it was 18 years ago. Yeah, I know, I'm an old fart. Cut me some slack! :)

    >On the second point, I couldn't agree less. "Angel Dust" is an even MORE >dramatic piece of work, I'd say. I don't know that the composition is as >strong, but it's awfully good. It's sad that the band's basically >disappeared....they're probably one of the dozen or so most interesting >bands still going today (in the U.S., at least).

The songs just didn't rock enough for my taste. I found that there were some real throwaway songs on AD. One of those which I liked least was Be Aggressive. That cheerleader part, while making an excellent mockery of sports like football that capitalize on aggression, was VERY annoying. If I wanted to hear that, I'd go to a high school football game. I found that TRT had much more bite and I was more partial to its production. I may buy the "red" one just to see if it is any better, but I know they changed guitarists and that worries me a little. I think I'll try to find it used or audition it before buying.

    Cheers,

Woah! Hang on a sec Brian. That may be your personal perspective, but imagine how someone who enters into a trade without knowing that you assign a pecking order to trades will feel reading that. I'm not flaming you in any way, as I too have been roasted when things interfered with my getting stuff out to people, but try to empathize with these people. They are just impatient. It's a natural human foible. No one wants to be told that there trade is not as important if they entered into the agreement on good faith. If you had been waiting for quite a while, you might be getting perturbed by now too. :) However, I also know that you have an honest reputation and that these people will get there stuff when things are more stable. And all of you who are thinking of calling Brian and chewing him out, SETTLE THE FUCK DOWN!! I don't normally ever use intense profanity in public forums, but I know what it's like when a family member has a serious or terminal illness. I lost an older brother not long ago to a car accident. He was hit by a drunk driver on his way to pick up his wife after her pre-natal checkup at the OB-GYN. At first, I had a hard time just remembering how to breathe. All the while, I was being hassled by people who I had trades going on with. "Hey you fuck! When am I gonna get my shit! You promised me you fuckin' asshole!" These people are lower than dog vomit and I have just begun to get back into negotiating deals again after seriously considering giving it up. Everyone got their stuff, but the whole experience of greed and narcissism left a most foul taste in my mouth. What the hell ever happened to the milk of human kindness? Did it all turn sour? Brian has been through a very frightening and intense emotional experience. Show him the respect and compassion which he is due. I wish you and your family all the best Brian, and send hopes for a speedy recovery for your dad. Hang in there! We're pulling for you!!

The single best Japanime film I have seen (imo) is Ninja Scroll. Very very nifty. Although, while there are tons of ninja running about, you won't find any scrolls. Go figure. Intereting story, good animation, original demons. Worth the price of admission. It's the only Manga film I've liked enough to buy.

I don't want to argue whether or not Akira is better with anyone. It's a matter of personal taste. Akira is simply a classic, but I liked Ninja Scroll's story better.

If you're looking for something that is purely fucked up seek thee out Urotsukidoji. It comes in five parts, and they are simply evil. Be prepared. Definately not for the kiddies. This will scar the faint of heart.

The subbed (as opposed to dubbed) versions of Urot... contain *more* vicious sexual mischief according to those I've talked to, although, the dubbed version was perverted enough to make me (happy? naw) wonder about the film makers.

Hey Kev, regarding your 600 cd's,I have over 500 myself, and I've found that the only real way to order them is the way you don't wanna use:alphabetize.Sure,It's long (and boring,I'll give you that)but ultimately rewarding.I work in a record store (Sam the Record Man,for those canadian boys out there(Hi guys)), and we have to alphabetize every section in the store. So if you make it a habit,it won't bother you eventually. I also have this space problem at home and I bought myself 3 cd holders that hold up to 144 cds. They're pretty cool, because they're wooden,so you have one space for ten cds, another for 10, and another, etc. You don't have these itty bitty slots for each individual disc,so you don't have any problems when it comes to double cds! The company that makes these is Nappa Valley. You can only get them pine colored, and there's no finish,so you can do whatever you want with'em;nice coat of gloss, black paint, cover it with sitckers...whatever.They're about 35 bucks each, and if your local store doesn't have them you can ask them to order them for you. Now I know that you would have to buy 4 or 5 of those to completely store your collection,so I have an alternative (a progressive one, that is).I myself ran out of space with my 3 racks,so I went to the Montreal downtown store(Sam's megastore) and I ordered myself a big 675 cd shelf just last week. The thing is close to 100 bucks(made by JD Whitney), but you end up saving some money. It looks just like a bookshelf, except the shelves are tilted and you put all your cds vertically, with no separations,so when you have a new one,you just slide it in! This rack is pretty expensive, so only big stores will *maybe* carry them. But you can always order them. I hope this helps you out a bit,and I hope it doesn't bore other Ytsejammers!

A little note on the side to all 'jammers,I wish you guys would stop emailing such crap.Don't get me wrong,a lot of things are very interesting, but things like "I think Jon Anderson is better than Jon Arch" or "Neal Schon sucks eggs big time compared to Yngwie":WHO CARES! As long as it's music,it's expression. So let them express themselves and don't blast them. Anyways, everybody's gonna have a different opinion about everything because music is such a personal thing.I mean, you can like or dislike, but you don't have to shout it on rooftops!

    Happy list'nin', Seb
