NY has a good station - WSOU!!!
PS - The clinic was everything I had hoped for and more. I thought it would
be like half an hour of endorsements, but John must've played for about 90
minutes! Awesome stuff.

I disagree about Metal Blade. I would say that they support some of its
artists.
I mean GC's Machine Fish was very easy to find when it came out. One
Bestbuy had tons of copies and even had it in the new music section. When
Fates Inside Out came out it was nowhere to find. No stores had it and
most rarely ever have it.
I got into sorta argument with the lady at the metal blade email address.
Her response was that there were many things about the record industry
that I dont understand about and that it was too long to go into to.
Whatever the hell that means....

Dear jammers,
Hey there! Here's an update for the YtseCon III! First of all, it will
take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY), on Saturday, October
12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have spoken to Dream Theater and management, and
they say that they should be there.
The cost for pre-paid tickets is $20 per person. The cost at the door
will be $25 per person. This will cover the cost of the conference room
and other miscellaneous stuff (name tags, programs, etc.). If you would
like to pay in advance, please send a check to:
YtseCon III
c/o Jeff Chew
350 Broadway, Suite 703
New York, NY 10013
When you send a check, please include a note or letter that says your
name, return address, e-mail address, and phone number. This makes things
a lot easier for us when we send the tickets back to you, plus if we ever
need to get in contact with you.
Due to the lack of reservations, we have decided to return the block of 75
rooms to the Marriot. Now, we will be reserving rooms on an as-need
basis. I will be getting the number so you can reserve rooms from the
Marriot directly, but I can still take checks for reservations. I should
still be $100 per room per night. If you need someone to split a room
with, we are still doing taht, so e-mail me at jc309@columbia.edu. or give
me a call at (516) 674-4828. The rest of my contact numbers are in my
.sig.
If you plan on flying to the YtseCon III, we have arranged something with
Rich Worldwide Travel so you can reserve airline tickets through them by
calling their 800 number. Please call 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that
you are going to the 'Dream Theater Convention'.
If you can provide a ride to the YtseCon III, or if you are in need of a
ride, please contact me by either e-mailing me or calling me and I will
see what I can do.
Well, that is all there is for now! I hope to see you at the YtseCon III!
Yours,
Jeff Chew =)

Hey everyone. I just went to Best Buy (in search of Marillion's
Made Again, but to no avail), and while I was flipping through the $5.99 CD
bin I found, not one, but TWO Galactic Cowboys CDs. I'd never heard them
before, so, I bought them both. (Galactic Cowboys and Space in Your Face)
They're both great; very unique. I love the sound of Monty Colvin's 12
string bass, especially about a minute into "You Make Me Smile". I also
like the moo and spanish guitar at the beginning of the "Galactic Cowboys" CD.
Why does age have to be an issue everywhere? If you have to stoop
to making age comments in a flame, you've got a weak argument; since when
did cheap shots mean persuasivness?
I was surfing the net a while ago and I found a formatted IRC log of
an interview with John Myung and Mike Portnoy. It was really a great
interview and really informative. I wish I'd kept the URL. Amazingly, JM
got in several multi-line comments. Whoever put that interview up, thanks!!!

Just picked up the self-titled Galactic Cowboys CD at Best Buy
last night for $5 :))). They also had Space in Your Face for the same
price, I believe (already have it, though).
Somebody mentioned GC releasing an EP soon. KEWL!!!!!!
Bummer I haven't been able to make it to any clinics, but I
guess that's the curse of living in the midwest. Oh well, I guess I'll
have to wait for the impending tour to see the guys (never seen before).
Thanks to all who did give the accounts of the clinics, though. Sounds
like a great time.

Hey,
Any of you who went to the Petrucci clinic.... did he mention if
he's doing any midwest clinics? It's a long shot, but I have to ask.
Someone mentioned that Rush is dying out on the radio....
Heh... you may want to move to Chicago. I hear Rush on the radio at
least 3 times a week. In fact, one of the classic rock stations out
here just played Chronicals all the way through without interruption.
This is a HUGE station, too... they sponsor massive concerts and
have one of the highest listener counts out here.
MY DT tribute prediction: This will never happen. It would have
been fun, but it's not really reasonable. I mean, if a group of you
live in the same area and are going to put something together, more
power (and good luck :) ) to you, but when I heard that it's a 12
year old kid trying to organize this thing... that's when it just
fell through in my mind.
Ben, I won't give you the response you want to your last flame.
Since you are not adult enough to take it to e mail, I'm going to
treat you like the kid you are. I am still sort of embarrassed that
I went off like I did. That was immature of me. I will note,
however, that I only got one complaint for that, and I got a few
compliments for it. Let it die on the jam. I'm perfectly willing to
talk to you on e mail. It's over on the jam.
I need a suggestion for a middle of the road ($$$-wise) effects unit.
I used to work at Guitar Center (I know... now I'm the devil) but I
didn't mess around with programming their units that much, since
people tend to just change it minutes later. I want to find a clean
sound that will equal Petrucci's from Lifting Shadows. Think I have
a shot?
Also, what is the going price on DR-5s? I found one used, but the
price seems kinda High. I know... this is not DT related, but
nothing has been for a while (until you lucky bastards got to go to a
Petrucci clinic!)

wow. that's about all i can say. wow.
if ANY of your are even remotely considering getting this album..... do it.
fucking incredible! :-)
ok, here's the lowdown:
1. Working Man: Sebastian Bach - vocals, Jake E. Lee - lead guitar, Mike
Portnoy - drums, Billy Sheehan - bass, Brendt Allman - rhythm guitar.
**very cool track. Bach kicks some serious booty on this one. his voice
is just so powerful... wow. and Portnoy/Sheehan? jesus. :-)
2. By-Tor And The Snow Dog: James Labrie - vocals, everyything else the same
as Working Man
**this is actually a Working Man/By-Tor medley. very cool. Portnoy does
a few killer solos in here.
3. Analog Kid: Jack Russell - vocals, Michael Romeo - lead guitar, Mike
Pinnella - keys, Portnoy - drums, Sheehan - bass, Gary Wehrkamp - keys.
**excellent cover. pretty faithful to the original.
4. The Trees: Mike Baker - vocals, Brendt Allman - guitar, Chris Ingles -
piano, Portnoy - drums, Sheehan - drums, Gary Wehrkamp - keys
**this was the only letdown of the album for me. i love Baker's voice in
Shadow Gallery, but for some reason he just doesn't sound right in this
song. however, instrumentally this track is superb.
5. La Villa Strangiato: Steve Morse - classical guitar and main solo,
Portnoy - drums, Sheehan - bass, Allman - rhythm guitar, James Murphy -
ending guitar solo and keys, David Townson - rhythm guitar
**holy shit! this is the best track, IMO. absolutely brilliant. Sheehan
totally rips on this... i never realized a bassist could play so fast.
and Morse? wow.
6. Mission: Eric Martin - vocals, Brad Kaiser - drums, Robert Berry -
guitar, bass, keys, background vocals
7. Anthem: Mark Slaughter - vocals, George Lynch - guitar, Deen Castronovo -
drums, James Murphy - rhythm guitar, Stu Hamm - bass
**very good track. Slaughter sounds surprisingly good on this. Hamm is
just too good for words
8. Jacob's Ladder: Sebastian Bach - vocals, Petrucci - lead guitar, Matt
Guillory - keys, Portnoy - drums, Sheehan - bass, Allman - rhythm guitar
**another excellent one.
9. Closer To The Heart: Fates Warning. (Alder, Matheos, Zonder, Vera)
**one of the best on here. very, very impressive. they even throw in a
surprise....
10. Natural Science: Devin Townsend - vocals, Guillory - keys, Castronovo -
drums, Murphy - guitar, Hamm - bass, Townson - ending guitar solo
**probably my 2nd fav on the album. this was a real treat for me since
Townsend is one of my fav singers.
11. YYZ: Murphy - gyutar, Guillory - keys, Castronovo - drums, Hamm - bass
**very good. these guys really rock this song hard. especially
Castronovo and Hamm...
12. Red Barchetta: Labrie - vocals, Morse - lead guitar, Richard Chycki -
rhythm guitar, Sean Malone - bass, Sean Reinert - drums, Murphy - rhythm
guitar and keys, Townson - rhythm guitar
**there's alot happening on this song... almost too much guitar, but it's
more than made up for by James's singing. :-)
13. Freewill: Gregoor van der Loo - vocals, Marcel Coenen - guiatr, Trent
Gardner - keys, Jeff Brockman - drums, Carl Cadden-James - bass
**absolutely kick ass. Gregoor sounds very much like Geddy... it's quite
spooky.
ok. now my fingers are tired. :) i've been cranking this cd in my car stereo
for the last 2 days since it rocks so fucking hard. this is a MUST buy. i
got mine via pre-order through magna carta... i believe that actual release
date is next week, but i'm not quite sure.

I was wearing my Ytsejam shirt (courtesy of Jason Giles) the other

plans to do a new Ytsejam shirt in the near future? It's been over a year
since the last ones were done (I think) and we've added quite a few new

In no particular order:
1) John Myung is clearly way, way underrepresented in the pages of musician
magazines. He's obviously a part of the first tier, a peer of guys like
Jeff Berlin, Geddy Lee, Bill Laswell, Stu Hamm, and Michael Manring. His
absence from these publications frankly baffles me. Ironic, though, for me,
since I came to Dream Theater as a result of reading about the band in a
Guitar World from 1990 (or early '91....can't remember the issue at the moment).
2) The key to a good guitar sound, if you're asking me (and I'm much more a
bassist than a guitarist) lies in defining the midrange properly. It's
really common, at this point, to EQ guitars by just wiping the midrange out.
But that scooped sound isn't really strong at times (and it annoys everyone
else in the band by stepping on ranges that they'd generally occupy more
fully). Which leads me to another, related point....
3) "A Farewell To Kings" IS probably Rush's worst-sounding album. But I
wouldn't say "Hemispheres" is a lot better. The layered sound the band
used, especially on "Presto" and "Roll The Bones" gets knocked a lot, but
there's real clarity between instruments, and there's more space in the
arrangement. Albums where there's a little more separation have always
appealed to me more -- all hail Peter Collins! Marillion's suffered from a
lot of the same problems...their albums have gotten better sounding over the
years. I'm sure part of why I like "Clutching At Straws" so much is that I
listen to "Fugazi" and cringe at the production.
4) I'm not so ready to knock the Alternative "scene," as far as it exists.
Though it makes a lot of folks in these parts plug their ears, there are
some good bands out there working the turf -- Bad Religion, The Offspring,
Smashing Pumpkins. They aren't virtuoso players, to be sure, but I try not
to hold that against them, any more than I'm gonna knock John Lee Hooker for
his lack of 64th notes.
