    hey everyone;

    just a couple things i wanted to mention;

the tribute thing- i really think that this is just not realistic at
all. i don't know how many people on this list can afford to buy a
plane ticket, take time off from work, pay for studio
time and help pay for production costs for a cd that will make no
money whatsover. (unless you discuss royalties with DT or something).
but hey, that's just me talking. if you want to try it, more power
    to you.

i noticed some discussion on sequencing drums... i use the sequencer
in my Korg 01/Wfd synth. this sequencer has quantinization, but to
varying degrees. what i normally do is record the drum track live
then apply maybe a 50% quantinization to the track... this corrects
my rhythm to a certain extent (since i'm trying to play drum rhythms
on a keyboard) but doesn't take away the human feel. once you add
totally live tracks over a partially quanitized (sp?) track, it
really helps with the human feel as well.

to the guy making Carpie Diem (sorry dude, lost your address when my
hard drive crashed a while back): please email me. :-)

    um, that's about it.

    Message-ID: <UPMAIL04.199607270421230621@msn.com>

I produce his sound remarkably well with a mesa boogie triaxis that blew my
wallet away...lol (that is the pre amp he uses) but before i got that, i
used to play through a ....

Samson concert series ii wireless into..
    Korg dt 1 tuner into...
    roctron patchmate (bradshaw switcher) into...
    ADA MP-1 split into...
    roctron progap into...
    roctron Intellifex into....
    BBE sonic Maximizer into...
    Ensoniq DP4 into
    Digitech Dual 14 EQ into....
Carvin FET 400 power amp into....
    Carvin 4-12 cabinet

and through this setup i was able to duplicate Petrucci's tone and effects
rather well.... the MP-1 gave me the tube sound but wasn't quite harsh enough
so i split it and used the Pro gap for its heavy distortion (non tube) but
with the Intellifex and the ensoniq i had plenty of effects to completly
    duplicate his sound....

i have since bought the triaxis and with the help of the settings listed in
the back of a magazine i have the exact tone he uses...TOO COOL

so when i play his songs you almost cant tell whether its him or not....except
when you ask me to play all the songs...lol pull me under..lie...and another
day are about it for me...but i got the clean sounds and distortion sounds
    totally down...

i will look to see if i can find the settings!

about the drum machines, i use an Ensoniq ASR-10 and with the sampling
capabilities i can reproduce most drummers as well as add keyboards, real
sounding piano, bass, and others all in digital before tape...as the asr 10 is
basically an 8 track digital recorder, then all you have to do is set up a
mini disc player or dat player and record you guitar and vocals live and you
have got yourself quite an awesome recording!

thanks for listening, and someone mentioned 7 strings, i have an all white
Ibanez (of Course) Universe 777 and the Vai 777 that looks like the one on
the cover of passion and warfare

GREAT GUITARS, and they do sound very good!

Leftovers is taked on to the end of the Flexable CD. At least it was
when I bought the CD a million years ago. The version I have is pressed
by Akashic Records and distributed by Important Record Distributors. I
have no idea if Relativity has bothered to reprint this album or not. I
doubt it is out of print though. I have no idea if this is a limited
release. Although, I don't think they've offered those tracks (So Happy,
Bledsoe Blvd., Burnin' Down the Mountain, and Chronic Insomnia) on any
other release, but I could be wrong.

    Correction...John...check your figures...VH w/ Sammy sold about 20
    million!!!!

Yes...But here are more of the facts....

*) Van Halen w/ Roth has had 6 albums....
*) Van Halen w/ Sammy has had 5 albums...

The above two facts make album sales at about (give or take) 4+ million
across the board.......(The live album is almost insignificant....check
the figures on that...It did shit...)

ALSO....VH with Roth has had 11 more years to sell albums...for your point
to be valid....we would have to take a recount in about 11 years!!!! It
would be safe to assume that Van Hagar would have a good 5 to 10 million
    more on the count....

            Also....When someone mentions hit record...most likely...they are
refering to billboards top200 album list....Van Hagar's studio albums have
all entered the countdown at #1!!!!!!! Van Roth's albums have never ever
reached #1.....(with ironically, Michael Jackson's Thriller keeping 1984
from hitting number 1.....which EVH played on!)

Also!!!!!! Van Halen scored one #1 hit single (Jump) with Roth.....why
don't you count how many have surfaced with Hagar....

I think it is safe to assume that Van Halen w/ Hagar has outsold Roth...in
less time with fewer studio albums!!!!!

I have voted in Bass Player's annual reader's poll. Because I share
a subscription with my brother, I didn't get final say on the voting. We
voted for Jonas Hellborg as Bass Player of the Year and John Myung for the
    rock category. Other notable votes were for Mick Karn, Unclassifyable;
Steve Swallow, Jazz; and Sting, Favorite Band.
John Myung is almost never mentioned in Bass Player. There was a
small, uninformative article year or so ago, a mention when he came in 7th
in the readers poll, and that's all I know of. An interesting point, the
article was before "Awake" came out, and he was listed as playing a Tobias
Bassic 6. A few pages past the interview, in the New Gear section, profiled
are the..........TUNG BASSES!!!!!!! (I wonder where he found out about them????)

Okay somebody needs to hold me back. How dare Mr. Metzger say bad things about the new Iced Earth disc! "The Dark Saga" is shear brilliance! Okay maybe I am overreacting just a bit *chuckle*. But seriously I listen to this disc at least once a day it is so good.

I have been a big Iced Earth fan since "Burnt Offerings" (I always liked the lyrics "I will have her, she's mine!"). Granted "Burnt Offerings" (here after referred to as BO (nothing to do with the bands odor I assure you)) had a 16 minute long track. And long songs are key in my book. "The Dark Saga" has the last three songs that are supposed to be part of a larger thing. They just decided to split them up on the disc for some reason *shrug*.

    > Dark Saga is a concept album somewhat on the lines of Mindcrime but I dont > really listen to vocals so I cant offer much on that front. Sadly, even > with the cover, the total length is only 47 minutes and this is filled with > a lot of shorter songs. I had always preferred their longer songs such as > Dante's Inferno so this aspect was a bit of a let down for me.

The concept of the disc is actually the Spawn comic book series. I have only read the first ten issues but the themes on the disc are kind of general things that I vaguely remember from the comics. Good artwork on the disc cover from the guy that draws Spawn (Macfarlane or something like that *shrug*). True the disc _is_ a bit too short.

    > Their sound is still heavy but seems a bit more accessible than that of > either Burnt Offerings or Stormrider. And, I dont get the same level of > intelligence in the song writing as on their previous two disks. A couple > of songs faded out which pissed me off (does anyone else get pissed off > when Learning to Live fades out ??). Still some good riffs, but I would > rate it at only 20% worth of a Dream Theatre (drink twice) album. Hmmm. > An interesting concept there, eh (20% worth)

Okay the songs are a bit more radio friendly than previous discs but they still kick major ass! There are some fade outs but you must admit that some of the riffs are just killer! When I know the kick ass riffs are coming up I just get a big smile on my face (okay so maybe I am weird so sue me!).

Only 20% of a DT....I give it 90% since it is the best CD this year. Of course the new MANOWAR comes out soon *chuckle*. But the new MANOWAR isn't actually all that good (anyone want me to mail them my review of it?).

Okay enough of my venting. Hey does anyone out there that I know want to share a room at the Ytsecon? I shall be flying in from Madison, WI for the con.

    Adios.
