In Response to someone's question about guitar sounds...

Unfortunately, it is no easy task to copy JP's sound, even with the
thousands in gear he has. He had a professional programmer set his
tones up. You can come close, with cheaper gear, but it will take a
    lot of effort.

First off, reconsider on getting a USA Custom. Look at some used
Ibanez guitars from before they were made in Korea. The Japanese
ones are good. Some of the USA customs even have made in Japan
stamps on them, so don't think that USA means everything. All you
really need is a neck that will support low action, preferably
rosewood (like JP's) and you will need Humbuckers (For JP's sound,
get the pickups he uses... DiMarzio Norton or something)

    Don't play through a wireless.

For amps, you'd be suprised at the sound from the new Peavey Trans
Tube amps. They really do sound good. You can save hundreds, or
even thousands on something like that. If you aren't going all the
way on gear, then don't go all the way on some things and part way on
others. Get the best gear you can afford but evenly matched. Those
wuold be the amps I'd recommend, and then you'll need an effects
processor. You can get good sounds for cheap with a used Quadreverb.
If you want new gear, try the Digitech TSR12.

That will give you all the options you need to get the sounds, but
    you'll spend weeks tweeking.

My friends suggest getting a rackmount eq, to save time in the
    tweeking process.

    Hope this helped.

Um, whoever sent those last two messages with the long tail of binary
bubblegum, I know you recognize your mistake, but TRY not to do that
anymore? I was hoping for some more juicy stuff to moan and complain
    about.

Michael Hedges Tunings! Yo, whoever asked me the question about
tunings for Michael's tunes, I have a few, from transcribing a bunch
of his songs, but just recently I was bored and I decided to do a
Lycos search for Michael Hedges. One of the pages I found had
compiled a list of tunings for some of the songs and even
transcriptions! It could have saved me hours of time. Anyway, I
recommend looking him up on netscape, but if you have a particular
song you need the tuning to, please feel free to e mail me. I know
about 10 of his tunings, and about 2 1/2 of his tunes. :) He's
tough. I recommend starting with The Magic Farmer (the last tune on
Aerial Boundaries) or The Naked Stalk from Taproot. Just so you
know, Taproot and Live at the Double Planet are both great albums as
well. Live is simliar to Aerial on some songs. Taproot is a whole
host of different techniques and arrangement ideas. I'd say his
hardest song ever is on that album.

    Hi,

I would like to propose a "modified" version of Mike's update. For
those of you who have read his updates in the past, there is a lot of
stuff on there that is automatically put on every update. If we could
get an update that didn't include all the intros and stuff and just the
"meat" for lack of a better word, with the intros and lawyer speak
stuff thrown in there only occasionally, then that might help solve the
    bandwidth problem.

DTC: I was listening to the Radio channels on my DSS last night, and on
the Metal station (channel 512) the played The Mirror. It is so cool to
hear DT over the air. The only song I've ever heard on the radio is PMU
and it's been over a year since they've played that. If you don't have
a Digital Satellite 18" dish, go get one. They are definitely worth the
    price.

I've got something to say regarding VH, but snce it's been declared a
non issue I will say nothing :(

Mike and Skadz, seems like the easiest way to solve this would be to
split the updates into components and post them, perhaps one per Jam.
That way it wouldn't be overpowering. Mike could handle this manually
just by staggering the posts, or Skadz could get tricky 'n' technical
and devise some kewl software workaround... :)

They are not currently touring as a band. The new record will be out in early 1997 and a tour will most likely start in the early spring. John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy are both doing clinics around the US this summer. I'm sure someone will be able to help you with the locations. Derek Sherinian is currently playing gigs with a side project called Ethyl Mertz. Band members include Al Petrelli of Savatage and early reports say that these guys kick! >WHY THE HELL DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO LISTEN TO THIS BAND!?!?!?!?!?!

    I DON'T KNOW!! :)

This seems like a good idea to me, but I wonder if it leaves enough time to rehearse.

    >Surely someone in the area would be able to offer a rehearsal >space and the actual recording and/or jamming could take place the day >following the Con.

Remember that it can take days to complete a couple of tracks. I suspect that people on the Jam are going to be someone perfectionist minded about this and the project will take a couple of weeks.

That might be interesting. Sort of an Acoustic Dreams 2. Is that copyright infringement Mike!? ;) Perhaps a medley of stuff. Waits for Sleep, Surrounded, Silent Man, Another Day, Space Dye Vest, the opening of ACOS. If it was arranged properly it could be stunning. We could call it A Change of Formats: Ytsejam's Unplugged DT Tribute. :) (No I'm not serious about this title. Not even I would get that cheesy)

I thought that some may be interested in getting a heads up on the new Iced Earth CD "The Dark Saga". Iced Earth is a Florida based band (I think) with a hard metal sound and intelligently written songs. I had purchased "Burnt Offerings" and "Stormrider" and liked them a lot, so I went for the new one "sight unseen".

I got a hold of a Digipak CD which includes a bonus cover of Judas Priest's "The Ripper". Decent packaging and only $12 w/o postage (contact centurymed@aol.com if you are interested). The normally aspired CD goes for $10. If anyone is interested in Iced Earth, I would still suggest starting out with Burnt Offerings.

Dark Saga is a concept album somewhat on the lines of Mindcrime but I dont really listen to vocals so I cant offer much on that front. Sadly, even with the cover, the total length is only 47 minutes and this is filled with a lot of shorter songs. I had always preferred their longer songs such as Dante's Inferno so this aspect was a bit of a let down for me.

Their sound is still heavy but seems a bit more accessible than that of either Burnt Offerings or Stormrider. And, I dont get the same level of intelligence in the song writing as on their previous two disks. A couple of songs faded out which pissed me off (does anyone else get pissed off when Learning to Live fades out ??). Still some good riffs, but I would rate it at only 20% worth of a Dream Theatre (drink twice) album. Hmmm. An interesting concept there, eh (20% worth)

I was trying to catch up in my jams at work today (I am still about 25 behind!!), and I read that someone here was interested in a Jason Becker piece that was done on CNN. Well, I am sorry to say I am quite ignorant of his work, but as I was laying around after work, watching world news tonight on ABC, at the end of the newscast on Fridays, they choose a person of the week. Well, they start talking about some guy named Jason Becker. Because I was reading about it today, I grabbed the first tape I could (Tommyknockers part 1, what a disappointment), so I got about 2 minutes or so of a 3 minute piece ABC did on him.

This is real sad, the guy was like your typical looking rock guitarist, and now he is one of those stories of human determination against adversity. It makes you wonder what could be around the corner for any of us. Buy this guy's album, he made it note by note on a computer. He had to move his chin to click a mouse like thing...
