    >The nitty gritty:

    >I sequenced the tune on a Yamaha QY-20, and I have Cakewalk and Trax
    >software, but I don't know exactly how to set up the software to receive
    >the midi information and whatnot.... Can anyone help me?

    >Tankyouveddymuch. :)

I have a Korg 01W/fd, and I tried to configure a MIDI setup with
Cakewalk....it didn't work out for me. I was not at all successful with that
    application.
What I have done is set up the Korg with Freestlye (the software that came
with the board) and that works fine.
Question.#1....Are you doing a Midi interface IN and OUT? And, if you are
having probs. w/software, then I'm not surprised. I gave up on Cakewalk a
    while back
Question#2- IF you have already saved the sequence, then can you export that
file to floppy? I'm under the impression that the Midi file must already
exsist if you sequenced the song....Or did you do it per track???

BTW, want a Midi file of Space-Dye Vest??

    Rock On,

I was wondering if anyone knew King's X's policy on taping their shows. I know the Galactic Cowboys are pretty kind, but their soundman gave me a real hassle last time they were around. He told me he had caught someone taping and took their tape. I'd rather avoid that situation :)

Anyone with any experience taping them or know for sure, please get in touch. Thanks!

    > One trick to using a drum machine, I have found, is to avoid the single > pattern trap like the plague... part of it is varying the drum patterns > like a real drummer would -- displacing beats here and there... and not > overdoing that nifty "fix the beat" feature. Here are a few things I do to help my lame-ass Alesis HR-16 sound a hell of a lot more realistic. Try variations on these ideas: 1) I mix together 3 different snare drum voices. None of the individual samples works very well for me no matter how I adjust the pitch, so what I do is assign a nice fat punchy voice to one pad and pan it center; assign another slightly "rattly" voice to another pad and pan it one step right; and assign a another high-pitched, "ringy" voice to a 3rd pad and pan it one step left. It takes a while to decide which voices sound good together, tune 'em, and mix their relative volumes just right, but the results are worth it. All you do is program your parts with one of the voices and copy it to the others - the stereo separation of the "rattly" and "ringy" voices give me a nice full presence! The drawback is that my snare takes up 3 pads instead of just one. Oh yeah, another advantage is that I can use the rattly voice by itself for soft ghost notes and it sounds pretty cool. 2) Kick drum - same story as above, except I only use 2 different voices and pan them both center. I've experimented with using 3 voices so that I have one which is always constant and two which alternate (for the purpose of having different-sounding double kick drums), but I haven't spent enough time with the idea to find results I'm really happy with. 3) I use the "offset" feature quite a bit. On my machine, one offset step is something like a 364th note, so after I've programmed a pattern, I generally offset my kick drums 2 steps forward and my snare drums 3 steps forward. This is so they're not landing on PRECISELY the same beat as the cymbals, but just slightly off. It really helps give my patterns a more human feel, and it's MUCH easier than trying to record with quantizing off. 4) However... I always record my FILLS with quantizing off. It usually takes several tries before I get it to sound OK, and of course you need to slow the pattern down considerably. Afterwards I go back and edit the pattern by tweaking the volume and placement of each hit so that it sounds as natural as possible (very time consuming! - I think this is also done in offset mode) 5) I've discovered a way to do OK-sounding cymbal chokes, but it has its price. My machine has 3 hi-hat pads, grouped together so that they "cut each other off." To do cymbal chokes you have to assign a crash cymbal to one of the hi-hat pads, and SILENCE to another. Then you can hit the silent pad shortly after a cymbal crash and achieve the equivalent of a choke. I don't do this very often because it makes the regular hi-hats and crashes a nightmare to program, but if I desperately NEED a cymbal choke, that's how I get it.

Hmmmm. That's all I can think of for now, but there are always more little ideas floating around. Anyone else have some, or is this just WAY too off-topic?

    Jeff

    YEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tentative! I DON'T THINK SO!!! ;)

I can't believe this! I have wanted to see these guys ever since I bought OOTSP. If any Toronto area jammers are into seeing them, let's go as a group. Thanks Scott! That made my day!

Please God, let them confirm that date. I promise, I'll never write another pun lyric and post it to the jam again..... ;)

    >Or listen to Michael Hedges. When I sit down and play one of his >tunes (complete with melodic counterpoint and polyrhythms)

Michael kicks some serious butt. Any of you who like innovative acoustic playing should go NOW to your nearest record store and pick up a copy of Aerial Boundaries. The record is on the Windham Hill label. It will BLOW YOUR MIND! Chris, do you know what tuning and strings he uses? At one time he was using a bass string for the bottom end. I don't own any of his other records, because I've heard that his singing voice isn't great. Does he have any other instrumental albums?

    >I'd rank them >1. GC >2. Space in your face >3. Machine Fish

I haven't heard MF yet but I like the first one best too. I'll bet you're a KX fan. The first record reminds me of them quite a bit. Then again, Sam Taylor produced it. I liked Space a little less because of the thrashy stuff. I find it hard to groove to that sound.

    >Space also has those 2 annoying hidden tracks...

I know! What's the deal with one of the tracks making the timer run backwards?!

I agree with you Jim. I would find it MUCH easier to get them here. Besides, they are DT related content.

    >Thanks to everyone who responded concerning savatage's albums. How do EOT >and HOR compare with say Streets, Gutter Ballet and HotMK? Or even earlier >stuff?

The early albums prior to Streets are more straight ahead metal, and to be honest, I think they suck. There are some VERY bad songs on them. I listened to the first two records twice and then gave them to a kid who liked them. I'm not a fan of any of the Sav stuff with Jon Oliva singing. He shrieks far too much for my taste. I think that Zach has a much better voice and a stronger sense of melody. I'd still pick up EOT first and then HOR. EOT is my fave of the bunch. It could be said that this record would have more appeal for DT fans than any of the other records. There are a wider range of vocal and guitar sounds on that record than on HOR. I haven't heard the live stuff yet though so I don't know how the older material sounds with Zach at the helm.

    >The QR guy uses a real one of PL. Does Geoff Tate play the keys on Someone >Else?

Chris DeGarmo plays the piano part live. I'm not certain who played it in the studio.

Oh yeah! Steve rocks! Alien Love Secrets and Passion and Warfare are like "How to play rock guitar" instruction tapes. Flexible is much more Zappa influenced and the jury is out on Sex and Religion. Instrumentally, I like S&R but I can't stand Devon Townsend. Somebody tell this guy to turn the screaming OFF when you do a ballad!!

Concerning studio, I remember someone saying that he could have good prices. Please come back to us.

    ....................................................................... D A V E K I N G

Well, that was me (surprise!).I said a while ago that I could get VERY good rates for the studio in my school. Plus, this studio is a professional one, so taht could be real cool, except I live in Montreal. Whoever's interested, just email the jam your opinion, and if you all want it, I'll go ahead and book some time. But I doubt the Las Vegas and Los Angeles subscribers are gonna say "sure, I'll be down there in no time".

    >This is all fine and dandy, but are you REALLY going to ask >musicians from around the world to spend the bucks to travel WITH >GEAR to record a cd that may well end up earning HUGE legal >penalties? What are we going to do... record this cd and give it >away? You can't sell it without the band AND the label's >permission... the latter usually being unreasonable. I would love to >take part in this. I can learn a few DT songs in a matter of days, >so I'm not worried about getting my "10 songs" but if I have to spend >capable of paying for studio time. And I have no intention of >breaking copyright agreements with one of my favorite bands. Doing >something this serious simply has to be discussed with the proper >authorities.

As I said, not everyone's gonna be able to take part in this. Anyway, even if we have super-low studio rates, we're not gonna record the whole DT repertoire, are we? If we do, say, eight songs, that means 40 musicians. No more. Also, there'll be no legal problems. If we don't write the lyrics, if we credit DT as the composers, the only problems we might have is with the publishing rights. You see, DT are members of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).the way it works is when DT write a song, they have the publishing rights to it, meaning that every time one of those songs is transcribed, played on the radio or the lyrics are written down, the get royalties. But since we're not out to make money with this tribute album, it can be kept silent and we can each have a copy. If we press only 1000 cd's, there shouldn't be any problems. We don't have a record deal for this tribute, so it's not like we should take all these aspects seriously.

BTW, is anybody on the list another musician from MTL? I'm currently looking for a keyboardist and a bassist. Send me some email, and we'll do lunch. And another thing, I'm also looking for a COMPLETE video (vhs) recording of 1985's Live Aid Concert. Anyone know how I can get my hands on that? email me some help, please!!!

    Greetings Jammers!

I just had a thought about the tribute. Everyone is bitching about how to organize everyone at one time and especially when to do this. Well, isn't it obvious? When will most jammers be gathered in one place? That's right....at the ytsecon in october. What better incentive to get everyone to come than to meet DT too! I don't know how many people think this would work, but so far this is the best idea I've seen mentioned. Surely someone in the area would be able to offer a rehearsal space and the actual recording and/or jamming could take place the day following the Con. I realize that not everyone can afford to make it all the way out to NY (myself included) but this seems to be the most practical way to get everyone together. Well, that's my idea and I hope that it will help in deciding how to go about this.

Secondly....I picked up the new (and last :( echolyn disc yesterday...It is really too bad that this band is no longer around. For any of you echolyn fans out there who've been putting off getting this CD, wait no longer. You will not be disappointed.

That is all Zimbob has to say....

O.k...does anyone want to try an ACOUSTIC cover for the tribute project? I have an upright that I can dig out, drums are acoutic enough, and, well, someone's gotta have an acoustic guitar. Now what song would we do...??? Any thoughts?

.....Van Halen with David Lee Roth sold 27 million copies of their albums. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar sold nearly 16 million albums.......

How many albums you sell doesn't correlate with quality, but rather with popularity. And, unfortunately, popularity usually correlates with ignorance & simplicity.

Quality correlates with skill & genius .
