Some excerpts of Dusty's post and my replies:

    >I've said it before, Sammy is better in concert than Dave, which is
    >something Dave would have to work on, but Dave's voice is much more
    >powerful in the studio.

With the right producer, *I* can have a more powerful voice than LaBrie
    IN THE STUDIO.

    >Come on, Dave's got that classic scream that cannot be duplicated.

Not anymore. He did back in the old days, but not anymore. I have an
audio tape to prove it. If you ever make it out by San Francisco, let
me know and I'll play it for you.

    >And that's B.S. as far as Van Halen always being pop. Listen to VH1
    >and then listen to one of the albums Sammy is on and tell me which
    >one sounds more poppier...

Well, from my ears' point of view, F.U.C.K is a pretty fuckin' heavy
record! VH kicks major ass too, but FUCK ain't no slouch.

    >I just wish Eddie would get a little bit more original.

    >His imagination is really suffering when it comes
    >to creativity with the new stuff......

I'm guessing you haven't heard DLR's last album (Your Filthy Little
Mouth) if you think Eddie is lacking creativity. I mean, a duet with
Travis Tritt? A hip hop song? Yeah, VH would make a great Hip Hop band!

Even Eddie says he's doing the same stuff he did in 1978. I would like
to see them rock harder than they did on Balance, but DLR is going to
    turn them

    >The bottom line is, if Dave would practice doing alot better live
    >and would leave the drinking until after the shows and if they
    >would regain their hard edge they used to have, I would say, bring
    >Dave back and maybe the cradle will rock once again....DUSTY

Yeah, and if David didn't have a Penis he would be Dana Lee Roth. :)

Hey, I love the first four VH lp's (especially Fair Warning), but Roth
was in Van Halen, he's part of their past. Sammy Hagar IS the singer
today (well, was until last month). I just think the past should stay
there. Be proud of what you did, but move on.

BTW- VH is actively looking for a new singer. I don't have the address,
but they are accepting audition tapes.

One day, I decided to cruise over to Andy Miller's homepage (no, not THAT
one, the other one!) and check out some of the .wav files he had up there of
his solo project - INTERUM. I really liked what I heard, so I sent him some
money. I got the tape a couple days ago and I've been listening to it a lot.

I doubt any written description would suffice (but I'll try anyway), and
since his web page is up, and the samples are available to download, get to
    it!

    http://members.gnn.com/subtlerage/ I/don't/remember/the/exact/URL/of/the/
    page/that/the/samples/are/on/but/cruise/his/links/and/stuff/anyways/

But for the web-impaired, there's the all-too-brief description in Andy's
.signature file "Interum (new-age/prog instrumental)" I suppose most
you've seen the signature file, and thought to maybe check it out one day,
but I'm arrogant enough to assume that by me saying something, you will get
off your butts and actually go check out the web page, or if you're webless,
e-mail him and ask him questions and stuff. ;)

IMHO, the music kicks some serious ass! It's new-agey sounding with a
strong progressive influence - if it weren't lacking crunchy guitars, it
would be in the vein of the prog-rock/metal that we all know and love here
on Ytsejam. Andy's got solid chops and a good sense of melody; the dude
*can* play. These are some very mature-sounding instrumental compositions.

While it's not exactly a professional package, it is an excellent quality
cassette recording. The tapes are first generation from DAT master, and it
sounds really good in the car. :) I'm in no way affiliated with Andy
Miller, but I do see him on #ytsejam IRC from time to time, so I'm not
getting a kick-back, a free tape or much of anything really in return for
this, except maybe a "thanks for posting that, seeya on IRC sometime.
    -Andrew Miller" :)

    Hi everybody,

Some while ago I read on this list that someone had an advance tape
of a new Magna Carta band 'Aura' (the only European (Dutch) one!!!).

This band has changed its name to 'Lemur Voice'
As you probably know 'Aura' already exists.
Their first CD will be released September 3 (in Europe) September 10 (in USA)
through Magna Carta. The title of the CD is 'Insights'.

This band is heavier and more progressive than the other magna carta bands.
    Check it out!!!

The guitarist (Marcel Coenen) and the singer (Gregoor van der Loo)
have contributed to the RUSH-tribute CD on the track 'Freewill'

    Bye

    Nathan

Dave King, (and others who care):

I play the keyboards in a DT cover band (I mean we play mainly DT songs, but others
too, eg. Vai, VH, Malmsteen, etc.) Our name is "Five Seasons" (the band has 5 members).
    Well, we play:
    Pull Me Under
    Wait For Sleep
    Caught In A Web
    Erotomania
    Scared
    Change Of Seasons

In this Monday we recorded most of our songs (from DT only 3 songs :( cuz we didn't
have enough money for the studio) and tomorrow we will master it.
I also play in another band (with no name yet) which plays from DT:
PMU, Under A Glass Moon, Wait For Sleep, Learning To Live (in these days
we learn it) and Erotomania. Probably we will cover Ytse Jam and Metropolis.

Other subject. Have you heard about Symphony X? Any comment?

    Alright already,

I mentioned one bad thing about VH and everyone went nuts!!!

And BTW, FUCK Beavis and Buthead who are the ultimate example of musical
ignorance and MTV.....DT's music is way to far advanced for that. Don't we
all worship Dream Theater for there immense tallent? And wouldn't Petrucci
give Eddie Van Halen a good run for his money? I think so.

The general concensus on the new album, is that there will be a darker message
being expressed (through the song titles).....perhaps JP wishes to "show and
not tell" other guitarists where it's at...... I think it's great

A majority of the people who listen to Alternacrap (who have heard DT's I&W,
and even Awake) said they are lame.....Reality Check!!!
Obviously, some people simply can't understand DT's music because they can't
understand music theory. And I haven't seen any mainstream band express
their depthful knowledge of music theory, through their performance.

So screw Beavis and Buthead, screw MTV, and lets get off the VH subject It's
    a bit too touchy. :-}

There are a few people who can use it properly (JP, Alex Lifeson, Frank Marino, Steve Vai), as a sweeping filter, but most people just honk on the damn thing like it was a gas pedal on a Ferrari. Great! That's one of the less challenging songs and we can probably pull it off without difficulty. Something tells me I'd better start practicing my high A's! :)

    >Van Halen never had a hit record until sammy joined the band...never had as >many #1 singles as they have since sammy joined the band....

Actually, that's not quite true. Dance the Night Away from VH today was a huge single up here. When it came out, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it. My personal favorite from that album was their cover of Joni Mitchell's You're No Good. THe solo in that song is very simple but is among the best leads he's ever played. The one thing that really annoys me about Eddie now, is his excessive use of digital delay as a chorus/doubler. It seems to be on every song! I know that effects are fun, but if you can't get a good tone without them, it's time to get some new gear. Now, I'm sure that he CAN, But I'd like to hear it occasionally.

    Take care!

    Cheers,

Bud, if you were THAT good, I would be out there buying your cd right now. So don't get a big head with this.

    >I don't either go with the idea of "reworking" the material. The songs >should be as faithful as possible to the originals. One simple reason for >this: it will be nearly impossible to spare rehearsal time.

This is true. However, from personal experience in the studio, I can tell you that there will some rehearsal that is unavoidable. This will be primarily for reasons of sound setup (proper micing of amps, drums etc.).

Right on, bro. I agree, except that it won't be for sound setup and other studio thingys, but more for getting a vibe going before we can even lay down a scratch track for any of the songs we might do. Don't forget, NOBODY on this mailing list (that I know of) has ever played together, so yeah, I think we'll need a little rehearsal.

    >So I suggest that each musician on this jam who's interested in making this >recording gives a list of TEN DT songs he KNOWS he can do 100%, along with

Are you serious??? TEN songs??? I don't think I can cover four, and I'm talkin'bout the easy ones (To live forever, Another day,etc.).In fact, I don't think anyone can cover ten songs from DT except DT themselves. I think that's what they had in mind when they wrote the stuff down. Remember, this is progressive music, so it's normal that you have to practice your ass off to pull off just one of the parts. That's the whole point of the music. And please, nobody sends me email telling me I just think they're showing off, cause I don't. I'll be the first one to tell you that I think they don't care about looks, just about how it sounds. So please, don't blast me.

I think the only way we'll be able to pull this off is if we send suggestions of locations to the jam. I know that a lot of people want to play on this *tribute*, me first. But reality is we all live in different parts of the world. I'm in Montreal, so I could probably get to Toronto or New York, at most. Not everybody is free at the same time, too. So in order to do this we need to be very thorough and detailed about where and when, cause I don't wanna drive down to NYC for nothing. I suggest this: anyone who has a personal studio would be the best, but whoever can get a deal on studio time, send the facts in to the jam, and everyone will be able to criticize and choose. I submit that this is the only way this will work, cause you can forget about a panel of judges. Who is gonna choose them? We'd need judges to choose judges, so this is pointless. Might as well let the people decide, and whoever is bold enough to go ahead and book the studio time in their hometown, just send it in and whoever's close and free will go. Mike bahr can produce, Duane baron can produce, I don't even care if Alanis Morrissette produces. If your mother wants to produce this DT tribute, please submit her name to the jam. HOWEVER, whoever wants to produce this thing has to show his/her credentials. As long as we get it on tape (or ADAT, whatever), I'll be happy. This could be a beautiful project, and we could probably do it again once in a while.

I really wanna be a part of this, so let's try and make this work, OK?

    Seb
