Are there any Jammers from the DC or Northern VA (Herndon) area? I'll be
on travel there the week of the 29th and would be into hanging out,
suckin' down a couple of frosties, perhaps jam (anyone have a guitar
that'll make me sound better than I am? :). If so, e-mail me and let the
    jams begin...

If LaBrie hocked up too many flem globberz at a concert, those in the
first few rows might be in danger of getting hit by an YtseClam. <duck>

Well, I didn't care for the album with "Jump" on it either, but when I'm talking DLR, I'm talking VH1 and VH2, although I love "Woman and children First" and "Fair Warning"... I've said it before, Sammy is better in concert than Dave, which is something Dave would have to work on, but Dave's voice is much more powerful in the studio. Come on, Dave's got that classic scream that cannot be duplicated. And that's B.S. as far as Van Halen always being pop. Listen to VH1 and then listen to one of the albums Sammy is on and tell me which one sounds more poppier... I just wish Eddie would get a little bit more original. His imagination is really suffering when it comes to creativity with the new stuff.......Yes, jump is a really stupid song. I will agree with that...The bottom line is, if Dave would practice doing alot better live and would leave the drinking until after the shows and if they would regain their hard edge they used to have, I would say, bring Dave back and maybe the cradle will rock once again....DUSTY

hi there. so much fun shit to talk about. so little time.

first off, i will be seeing all you crackheads hopefully at mr. petrucci's clinic monday nite. and you know that it's going to be, as i call it, ffidh. so bring your bars of soap, cause i know jp will be sweating us so hard, we'll need the soap when he's done.

i survived the macintosh music fest last week. fucked up experience. i was rather upset at the fact that the progressive rock scene of nyc was rather unrepresented (actually, no prog all week), with 18 clubs and 450 bands to boot. i was hoping maybe 2 of the 450+ would be, but i guess that was even too much. the closest to prog i founf was a band called "ui". trio of drums, 2 basses, with one of them playing keys and switching to guitar sometimes, and they even sounded uncool after a while.

the trends i picked up on last week: a) tremolo- everywhere i went, the guitarist wasn't cool without a trem effect. it got sickening after the 2nd night. b) wah- i thought the wah craze went down, but i was quite wrong. c) folk and cheese funk. too many folk singers singing about losing their girls, boys, jobs, drugs, amplified dildos, etc. too many bands trying to sound like the spin doctors. very few and far in between were the acts that were REALLY funky, or had something REALLY cool to say.

there were good acts: a) gov't mule- i've never seen someone play a les paul like warren haynes did (allman brothers band). he was great. drummer and bassist (who i ran into and chatted with for all of 5 seconds later) were tight (drummer was like a "bad" portnoy). and although you can get easily bored with 12 bar blues jams that go on infinitely, they were still insane in the membrane.

    b) vernon reid did an impromptu set with 2 of his other bandmates. very techno-like, with loops, dj with samples, and just his crack-smoked playing. ran into him (got a picture), and talked to him. wished him luck on his tour with crimson, and spoke for a wee bit. met a bum who sang "pmu" for change after the show, which was outrageous.

    c) mayfield. featuring ex-member of tears for fears, sounding very floyd-ish (proggish, perhaps?), and cool.

    d) while i was at tramp's i figured i'd grab my king's x tix. yahoo.

well, enough rambling. main point of story. the festival, for all the good and bad, was really cool. i recommend anyone who's in nyc in july to check this out. lots to learn.

well, enough now. see y'all, punks. peace.

well ok, maybe not president (who wants that job anyway?) but /YOU/ can vote for Mr. Myung as Bass Player's <www.bassplayer.com> Bassist of the Year. this sounds like i either: a) work for Bass Player. untrue. b) get a kick back from the band if he wins. again, untrue. c) want to stuff the ballot box. untrue, tho it sounds fun ;)

i'd just like to see John get the recognition he deserves. he made #7 on last year's list. we can do better this year! <insert fav emotional-rallying-inspirational speach here>

so how do you do it? simply go to yer local bookstore, magazine stand, pimp on the street corner, seller of Bass Player mag and rip out the card in the middle, fill it out, send it in. i suppose you should buy the mag, tho the issue is kinda lame this time round.

and now back to our regularly scheduled VH bitchfest...

about dream theater songs for a tribute....I can play another day note for note and you might wonder if it is John or not....I play to the song constantly!

Van halen, everyone assumes that dave is back...and he most likely isn't...and secondly, who says that he can bring anything bak to the band?????

dave is going to have to do what eddie wants and what eddie wants is to sell records be it love songs or hard core, they adapted to what their listeners would buy....

obviously millions of people agree with us sammy fans cause their sammy era has far out sold the dave era....

    BY MILLIONS

Van Halen never had a hit record until sammy joined the band...never had as many #1 singles as they have since sammy joined the band....

I personally love the stuff dave did with vai, and jason becker...even vh, but there came a time for Van Halen to grow up get the music more mature and sell more records.....see i believe that all the covers dave did with van halen was because he couldnt offer any material to the band so they did covers do accomadate him...lol

    enough vh now,......RIGHT????

LETS HEAR THE NEW DREAM THEATER CD........ITS TIME......RIGHT????

    Hello,

Skadz was talkin' about MTV possibly playing more metal videos in the future. Well, I was wonding if their new channel will play more. For those of yo that don't know, MTV is launching a new channel that will only play videos, no shows. Looks like they decided to listen to the criticism. (has this been brought up on the jam? if it has sorry) I was thinking (hoping) that they'll bring back Headbanger's Ball, or at least a similar show. Think about it, they're going to have more time to show videos, so they'll have to pull out some old one's, maybe even some DT :) Anyway, who knows, guess we'll have to wait and see.

What is the general take on drum machines? I mean, not to feed the click debate, what do you (and the rest reading) think about, say, a guitarist (me) using a drum machine for bass, keys, and drums? I've found that it's a much simpler route than attempting to find musicians here who can PLAY my compositions, and it's a heck of a lot easier for demo-ing... I think most people would grant that much, but what would you say if, for example, I got a wild hair to record an entire album this way?? (For info's sake let's say that I'm using a 4-track drum machine plugged into a 4-track recorder, with, obviously, a lot of tracking problems since the bare framework is about... 12 tracks.)

On another note -- are any of you in LA in the Hollywood area?? I'll be moving down/out there in abut a month to go to MI (anybody else?) and would LOVE to put together a DTish band ASP....

Like Rick said, I really would suggest you to record the songs with a click and track by track. I wouldn't record the songs 'live' because this takes A LOT of more time than the other way.

More than half the songs wouldn't have allowed a single-tempo click: we > would've had to program the whole song. And that's time-consuming. > I NEVER said it was absolutely necessary!!!!!!!! What I did say was (in so many words) that I was in complete agreement With Mike Portnoy when he spoke to us at the White Plains Clinic back in November.... He said that Dream Theater uses clicks WHEN POSSIBLE....Some stuff...(a particular example he used was Metropolis Pt I) couldn't have a click put to it... Listen...If I had Mike Portnoy, Neal Peart, or Steve Smith on drums....I doubt I would care if a click was on one of the tracks....BUT...In my particular music with my particular drummer ...I felt a click was necessary.....So I jumped into the conversation with one post...

    > So please stop this bullshit that click is necessary, standard or what-not.

    STOP???!?!?!? WHOA....WHOA....WHOA.....Like I said.....I posted once.....

    > I'd personally prefer clicking, because that would make me feel better as > long as it doesn't kill the feeling with my drummer.

My View is this.....Feel and Click are two different things that ONLY clash when a drummer can't play well....If you can't play in time, with feel.....what makes you think that you can do it out of time!?!!!!

    > > You're a guitarist I presume

That is one of the instruments I play regularly....yes...but I don't think that makes an ounce of difference....Time is Time.....A band in perfect time with a real out of time guitar will still sound like shit....

    > so you're probably NOT the one starting off > each song with the drummer in studio, so you don't really need that > feeling. You're only too glad to lay your riffs on something as regular as > possible.

Not regular...If I wanted regular...I would have slurped down some metimucil.... In Time...is what I want...and I think that if you don't have time....well...2 tons of feel ain't gonna make up for shit....
