    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Here's an update for the YtseCon III! First of all, it will
take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY), on Saturday, October
12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have spoken to Dream Theater and management, and
they say that they should be there.

The cost for pre-paid tickets is $20 per person. The cost at the door
will be $25 per person. This will cover the cost of the conference room
and other miscellaneous stuff (name tags, programs, etc.). If you would
like to pay in advance, please send a check to:

    YtseCon III
    c/o Jeff Chew
    350 Broadway, Suite 703
    New York, NY 10013

If you are in need of a hotel room, we have reserved a block of rooms at
the Marriot, which will cost $100 per room per night. Of course, you can
split the cost with other jammers. If you need jammers to split a room
with, but you don't know anyone who also needs a room, you can e-mail
me at jc309@columbia.edu or call me at (516) 674-4828 and I will set you
up with someone (no, not that way).

We have set a date for reserving rooms by August 2nd. This doesn't mean
that you cannot reserve a room afterwards, it's just a way for us to find
out how many rooms we will be needing, in case we need to return rooms to
the hotel. However, if you register by the 2nd, you are guarenteed a room
at the MArriot. Also, if you reserve a room by the second, you will
receive a free YtseCon III t-shirt! After the second, we will be
reserving rooms on an as-need basis.

If you plan on flying to the YtseCon III, we have arranged something with
Rich Worldwide Travel so you can reserve airline tickets through them by
calling their 800 number. Please call 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that
you are going to the 'Dream Theater Convention'.

If you can provide a ride to the YtseCon III, or if you are in need of a
ride, please contact me by either e-mailing me or calling me and I will
    see what I can do.

Well, that is all there is for now! I hope to see you at the YtseCon III!

    Yours,
    Jeff Chew =)

Yeah, there's certainly a similarity there, but I don't know that I'd say
that "The Camera Eye" isn't heavy. Maybe not super-heavy, but fairly heavy.
Somewhere between "Stick It Out" and "Show Don't Tell."

I guess, more than anything, I was adamantly disagreeing with your assertion
that "Awake" was easily the strongest DT album. Or what SEEMED like your
assertion, anyhow. "Awake" is a good one...a REAL good one. But I like
"Images and Words" better. "Learning To Live," "Metropolis," and all.

As far as this click argument goes, I'm not so sure I'm on either side. My
band recorded and played live without a click and got by just fine. Working
with a metronome or a drum machine isn't a bad idea....gives you a sense of
what the time is. But I don't think playing without one is "sloppy" any
more than playing with one is "soulless." Rush does both and kicks rump
    around in either case.

    Hello?

There were a ton of poppy/love/non rocker songs when DLR was in the band.
    Examples:
    Aint Talking Bout Love
    feel your love tonight
    ice cream man
    jamie's crying
    beautiful girls
    dance the night away
    outta love again
    women in love
    you're no good
    dancing in the street
    happy trails
    oh, pretty woman
where have all the good times gone
    hot for teacher
    I'll wait
    take your whiskey home

those are just a few of the poppy/love/non rocker songs Van Halen did
    with DLR.

    They improved with Sammy...

Thanks for the info Keji. I'm a huge Schenker fan. I have to disagree with you
on UFO's last disk, Walk On Water; I think it's their best studio effort next to
Obsession. I don't know if you caught the tour last summer, but the band was
definitely on (Andy Parker didn't tour with them though). They played the
entire Strangers in The Night set (minus I'm A Loser), two songs from Walk On
Water, and one pre-Schenker cover tune (C'mon Everybody). I caught three Los
Angeles area shows before Schenker left the band (again).

If you can find Michael's solo acoustic CD (Thank You), by all means pick it up
(in the U.S. it is available only through the UFO Fan Club in Scottsdale,
    Arizona).

The latest word on UFO that I heard was that Pete Way and Phil Mogg met with
members of Dio's band (Tracy G and Vinny Appice?) and that discussions went
    well; could be interesting.

If any Jammers are interested in checking out UFO, I highly recommend their live
    CD, Strangers in The Night. There is some awesome guitar playing on this disk;
    Michael was in top form.

    Hasta.

    >I think Van Halen has matured greatly since DLR left. Letting Sammy

    >mistake.

EXACTLY! When Dave was in the band, most of the songs were about sex.
That's fine with me (I love sex as much as anyone else), but there are
other things. Sammy joined the band and actually brought maturity to
    the band.

I saw VH 3 times in the DLR days (78,79,81) and ALL those times Dave
should've used 'clicks' because he couldn't keep up with the band to
save his life. With Sammy, there was a lot more professionalism to the
    band.

    >>I would have to think the opposite......Since DLR left, every other
    >>song that VH wrote was about LOVE.

OH NO! LOVE SONGS! How disgusting. No songs with "Reach Down between my
legs, ease the seat back" Gee, Sammy could never write anything with
that kind of emotion. Dave much have done some real soul searching to
come up with that one. Or, how about "Might as well Jump! Go ahead
DAve, you have my blessing! :)

    >it starts to make them look like to much of a pop group...that would

VH has been a pop band since the beginning, just with a herder edge.
Listen to Dance the Night Away and Jump and Little Guitars and Women in
Love and Dancin' in The Streets and Pretty Woman and.... well, you get
    my point.

    >>Even Beavis and Buthead (who I watched in college), freaked when
    >>"Can't Stop Lovin' You" came on the TV...

Once again I go on a rant and towards the end I see the problem. We're
dealing with a person who bases their musical choices on Beavis and
Butt-head. Do you have any idea what B & B would do to a DT video? I
can hear the screams now from Beavis.

    >Mike Portnoy even said it himself, "...balls and chunk is where it's
    >at!" So maybe DLR will bring some balls back to the band.

You can't bring something you don't have in the first place. :)

After hearing all this talk about the DT tribute, i think it would be a great
idea, and i wish i could be a part of it. Odds are that i couldn't get away
to wherever this is being held. But even if i could, i think at this time
i'd be intimidated into not participating due to all the talk of being able
to do the songs "100%". I mean, i play guitar, but i'm no JP. And i can
sing, but not as well as JL.

I just think you're excusing alot of interesting and talented people from
participating because of this desire to hear DT's songs done 100%. If i want
to hear this, i'll listen to DT fer chrissakes. Anyway, just wanted to get
that off my chest; i hope the project does get off the ground and all goes
    well.

    >We have to focalize and not disperse. This should be a strictly DT-tribute.
    >I don't go with the idea of recording on someone else's material nor
    >"giving" DT a song. They're capable of doing that themselves, and 10 times
    >better.

Point taken, although I still think it might be nice for us to
give them something as a token of appreciation. Besides, you have no
idea how good a writer I am! :)

    >I don't either go with the idea of "reworking" the material. The songs
    >should be as faithful as possible to the originals. One simple reason for
    >this: it will be nearly impossible to spare rehearsal time.

This is true. However, from personal experience in the studio,
I can tell you that there will some rehearsal that is unavoidable.
This will be primarily for reasons of sound setup (proper micing of
    amps, drums etc.).
            This raises another interesting question.
Are we planning on doing this the old fashioned way where
tracks are laid down individually or are we looking at a live, in the
studio, approach. The former is more precise and is better in
situations where rehearsal time is limited. However, it can be more
expensive as it requires the engineer to present for a longer time
    period.
The live approach will generate a better vibe, but will
necessitate playing the tracks together for a while prior to going
into the studio, unless we want to spend around $150/hour rehearsing.
I feel that we would be better off to use a click track and
record on a track by track basis. I know how some of us feel about
that approach, but it's the only way it can be done without having a
    ton of people there simultaneously.

    >So I suggest that each musician on this jam who's interested in making this
    >recording gives a list of TEN DT songs he KNOWS he can do 100%, along with
    >the instrument played. The criteria should be "I know I can do this song"
    >and not "I'd like to do this song". For instance, I love Metropolis but I
    >wouldn't bet 0.02$ on managing it in the near future (on bass).

This may be a recurrent problem. We are going to have to be
certain that the parts can be played accurately before going into the
    studio.
I really doubt that any of us are capable of covering this
stuff perfectly. I'm not being a pessimist here, just a realist. Using
MET as an example, how many people can honestly say that they can
duplicate JP and KM's tandem solos. TTT would fall under this as well.
In order to record those tracks, the keyboardist and guitar play would
HAVE to sit down together and work through those leads to ensure that
all of the note inflections were accurate. Otherwise, one musician
will have to learn another's take on that passage.
In order to do this, I would propose that the two lead players
exchange .WAVs of their takes on the solos via e-mail. Once a
particular version has been agreed upon, both can practice it. That
way, the leads will be in sync when it is time to do the recording.
If anyone has any tab or sheet music for any of the proposed
tracks, we should make it accessible to people who are interested in
    the project ASAP.
This will be most critical, depending on the track, for the
keys and guitar as those two instruments share the bulk of the leads.
Are both of these now available in the US? I have yet to see them
here. If memory serves me correctly, there is some bass tab available.

That seems reasonable, but I think we need to have a way of
being certain that parts can be played correctly for each track. In
theory, once the lineup for a particular track had been decided upon,
musicians could exchange .WAVs as a means of ensuring precision. These
could also be made available to all members of the jam for auditioning
in cases where it's too close to call.

    >you from playing on the same song as that person.

Agreed. The studio is no place for ego. I have personally
canned musicians for it and it can NEVER happen if you want to keep
    things running smoothly.
The goal is the creation of art, not the winning of arguments
    or popularity contests.

    >Production: for the moment, I don't care who produces. MB could be the one,
    >but it's more important to book a time, a studio as well as a rehearsal
    >room and hotel right by the studio.

Excellent idea and very practical. I don't want to be driving
to Long Island from Toronto a couple of times per week.

    > I said above to keep rehearsals to
    >minimum, but it's obvious that (if this is gonna happen as it seems in the
    >States) people that can get together will be able to rehearse before
    >recording starts. The others (like me) that couldn't should be rehearsing
    >while others record.

Agreed. That could only be done if there was a means of
providing backing tracks to musicians for each song. Unfortunately,
that would require the use of a studio or a 4 or 8 track DAT or analog
    cassette.
I may be able to access this equipment and donate it to the
project. I'll get back to you all on that.

Kudos to Dave for getting serious discussion of this started.
I can work around whatever is most flexible for most of you, since I
am no longer studying and most of you still are.

Stay focused and let's do this thing!!

    Cheers,

    >Sorry if this is an FAQ, but...exactly how does Kevin James pronounce
    >*LaBrie*?

La-Bree. Just like the cheese. :)

This is not meant to imply that James stinks like cheese. He's
just named after one. Maybe his father worked on a dairy farm. :)
