Sorry but I don't think the other members are slowing EVH's progression at
all. He is already proven himself a world-class guitarist and performer,
just as the other members of what you call "his" band. What I like with VH
(ok the music is at times quite teenage), is that you don't get the
impression that it's HIS band. Live, there's a group spirit that flows from
the band.
>Sorry-no DT content, but a few comments on excellence in guitar playing,
>something that's common place in progessive metal, and that includes DT.
Excellence in any instrument is generally common place in prog. But I
wouldn't say: if you want ot hear the best guitar-playing, listen to prog
bands.
There are so many other great players in other styles.

you've already wasted time there ;)

It depends on what you expect from the material you're gonna record. Down
the clicks if you want a live feeling. It's nonsense to say you NEED them.
Is there a rule? No.

Hi! I'm Keiji from Japan.
Someone told about MARTY FRIEDMAN's 'TRUE OBSESSIONS'. I think it will
take some time to be released outside of Japan. Because on the sleeve of
this album was printed that EXCLUSIVE RELEASE IN JAPAN. So if you want to
get this album through me,e-mail me. The price will be 23 US dollars
(CD)+shipping cost.
And Japanese label MVP/Zero Corp. moved their homepage.

Subject: DT-tribute
Message-ID: <v02130501ae1b90c65ce4@[128.178.99.94]>
Hello me it's me again....
Since this tribute thing is still in the air, I'll take a swat at it. Up to
now many ideas have come and gone and I thought I'd put my two final grands
in.
This tribute has to be done in an organized manner. We first have to see if
it is feasible. There's no point in babbling when we don't know if there's
a chance we get to do it. So here are my proposals:
We have to focalize and not disperse. This should be a strictly DT-tribute.
I don't go with the idea of recording on someone else's material nor
"giving" DT a song. They're capable of doing that themselves, and 10 times
better.
I don't either go with the idea of "reworking" the material. The songs
should be as faithful as possible to the originals. One simple reason for
this: it will be nearly impossible to spare rehearsal time. Forget it. You
can't get people from around the world (I said: the WORLD) to take from
their holidays to rehearse. This time has to be taken to RECORD as much as
possible.
OK we don't want favoritism. I trust that every musician on the jam is
"mature" enough to be able to judge his own technical capabilities. Every
musician on this jam, should confidently be able to say "I can do this song
100%" or "I cannot 100%".
[drum-roll]
So I suggest that each musician on this jam who's interested in making this
recording gives a list of TEN DT songs he KNOWS he can do 100%, along with
the instrument played. The criteria should be "I know I can do this song"
and not "I'd like to do this song". For instance, I love Metropolis but I
wouldn't bet 0.02$ on managing it in the near future (on bass). If the
person is a multi-instrumentist (like me), and wants to do those
instruments on the same song, then each instrument would make an entry on
that list. The lists should be compiled for, say, a month, then it should
be seen if we have a band for such and such song and then if we have enough
songs to make worth a recording. If there are too many, then the selection
should be done on a statistical basis (that seems fair). To make things
clear from the start: Eroto, Voices, TSM should be considered as 3 songs,
Mirror and Lie as 2, and ACoS as 1.
As a result of this "poll", if there's a musician that makes it into most
of the songs because there's for instance only two keyboard players, so be
it. If we start with the idea that everyone must do only one instrument on
one song, we won't get anywhere. We have to keep the whole thing as
flexible as possible as far as the line-ups are considered. And if anyone
has personal differences with someone, then fuck it. This shouldn't prevent
you from playing on the same song as that person. Remember, on day one, we
will have only two points in common: we love DT and we're musicians from
the jam.
Production: for the moment, I don't care who produces. MB could be the one,
but it's more important to book a time, a studio as well as a rehearsal
room and hotel right by the studio. I said above to keep rehearsals to
minimum, but it's obvious that (if this is gonna happen as it seems in the
States) people that can get together will be able to rehearse before
recording starts. The others (like me) that couldn't should be rehearsing
while others record. This seems to be the most efficient way of doing
things. I personally should be able to take 2 weeks holiday to come down
and do this.
Concerning the support media: doing a CD would add a bit more value to the
thing and for this reason for me would be preferable. You know, it doesn't
cost much compared to studio time to press CDs. Plus we're making something
symbolic that should stand out more than it would on a tape. I see that
we'll have way plenty to do with 70 mins if we want to do something of
quality.
If this sounds (reads!) too patronizing to you, please indulge. At one
point, we have to stop buzzing around the honey-pot. Either we continue
talking about it and take it further at each word, or we drop it. If we set
our minds to this, it could be done in 1996.
Action and words.
If anyone has something CONSTRUCTIVE to say about this, you're welcome. I
suggest now that we decide on who gets the poll. Then end of August, we
collect the info and see the amount of interest in this project, then take
appropriate action.
Take care,

Ok, Ben thinks golf is boring therefore it must be. Everyone, golf is boring.
I think Van Halen has matured greatly since DLR left. Letting Sammy Hagar
go is a huge mistake. Bringing DLR back is an even bigger mistake.

Jeff Chew and I run the DT page at http://www.rsabbs.com/dt/. We have just put the "Fan Network" online. Basically, you fill out a form with all the info, and your info goes into a database. You can search the database according to world region and see everyone else that is on it. The purpose is to start correspondance with each other, find new people that live near you to go to shows with, etc..
I would love to see everyone on the jam sign up for it. I will be sending the database to the band so they can see who their fans are, their ages, and where they are from.
P.S. The page will also be giving more YtseConIII updates as they become available.
Peace.

> I don't know if you've ever worked in a studio before, but unless > you're recording jazz or vocal ensembles, each person records > separately, hence, the "feel among the band" is lost... It doesn't HAVE to be done that way! This is one of my many pet peeves about the recording industry these days. So many people are so preoccupied with the idea that everything has to sound FLAWLESS in the studio. My favorite example is Metallica's "And Justice for All". I mean, that album sounds like it was recorded by robots... it's just too perfect-sounding. But that's only one of hundreds, nay, thousands of examples of of what I'm talking about. Musicians, and especially producers, have becomes slaves to their own technology. Just because you're using a multi-track recorder doesn't mean you HAVE to record the instruments one at a time. How about setting up the band together and preserving the "feel among the band"? You can still record the instruments on separate channels to be tweaked later on, but at least you have the basic tracks done all together, as a BAND, on one take. Then you go back, remove the scratch vocals and record the real thing, then overdub extra stuff like another rhythm guitar, solos, and whatnot. AAHHH!!! WHY??? Why don't more bands do this? Aren't they tight enough? Don't they rehearse before going into the studio? Don't their producers work with them at ALL before they start recording? It drives me nuts. I wish more bands would do a "180" and stop trying to duplicate their inhumanly perfect studio recordings when they play live. Instead, how about trying to capture the spontanaeity of their live sound when they record in the studio! I'm ranting, I'm raving, and it's a lot of fun. :) If anyone REALLY wants to get into this in-depth, by all means send me some e-mail. Jeff P.S. - For the record (no pun intended), I understand there are certain times when the nature of the recording session "requires" a click track. I know from the personal experience of recording demos with just me on all the instruments.... it's a bitch to record with no click during parts where there are no drums/percussion. But there are ways around using a click track even THEN which help preserve the live feel of a group of musicians playing together (drummer clicking the sticks together softly which can be mixed out later, etc.) It takes some practice but as far as I'm concerned, it's worth it. You can't beat the sound of a recording that actually sounds warm & human, not canned & packaged! Ever try to > take visual cues from a tape machine?? :) Besides, on LIT, they show Kevin playing along with a click track...Guess that means DT doesn't have the vibe, eh? Pity....

I think that Edge of Thorns is the most melodic of the records. Zach's vocals are strongest on this record and there is some great guitar work by the late Chris Oliva. I like almost every track on this record. This one makes heavy rotation in the car, but it is also good driving music so watch out of the OPP!! Handful of Rain is also a fairly good record and Alex Skolnick makes his debut here. Chance would be the highlight track from this record, although there's plenty of stuff here that's pleasing to the ear. Both of these records have a lot more bite than DWD, but I give the edge to EOT for vocal work.

Unless you have a part that you are attempting to generate electronically. If I'm not mistaken, Peart used a drum machine to generate the opening hi-hat line in The Weapon from Signals while experimenting with a drum machine and click track. Once he had the pattern the way he wanted it, he just relearned it on his natural kit. The biggest use for the click is in ensuring synchronization in the studio, but you are quite right in saying that if you can't gel without it you're in serious trouble. :) The Ronco Click Track! The first marital aid for musicians!
On an unrelated note, does anyone else think that, on the LatM version of a Fortune In Lies, James sings the following line,

I'm usually not the type of person who will badmouth a business, but in this case, I have reason and fact to do so... I would recommend NOT buying the CD from RockOnline, unless you live in an area where the closest record/software/electronics store is 100 miles away. I have a lot of friends who took them up on their "Priority Special Order", which meant that they were supposed to receive the CD-ROM before anyone else, and, well, they didn't. I got my CD-rom 2 days after it was released because I went out to a store and bought a copy...(or, rather, it was bought for me. :) And the people who ordered on-line? Didn't get theirs until 2 weeks later, and the extra shipping charges actually made it MORE expensive to buy than it did for me to go to a store and pick it up. So the moral of the story: if you're not opposed to paying more than you have to and waiting longer than necessary, go ahead and order. IF you have at least 2 oz of brain left, um....don't eat Spam.
:) You get what I mean. :)
