IMHO Eddie VH could become a world-class guitarist if he'd loose those
slackers and losers which call themselves his "band". He could also
drop that zit-puckered teenage hormone music and write some stuff that
shows some creativity--not the crap that sounds like real-fast
shredding on a simple-simon tuna, er tune. But he probably wouldn't:
he's making too much $$$ from simple-minded morons. IMHO

IMHO you're an ----, well, never mind. I can't see where you come up
with that "Zit-puckered blah blah blah," I guess you haven't heard
Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do), or how about Deja Vu, or Not Enough,
or Feelin' or Aftershock, or.... I think you get my point.

I had more but what's the use. The person who wrote this is STILL
sending mail to arastar. Hey Genius, we haven't been at arastar for 7
months now. When you get a clue, write back.

In my own opinion, it's been many years since Van Halen has put out
anything interesting...I'm suprised more jammers don't agree with
this...I prefer David Lee Roth anyday over Sammy...Sammy was really
good on his own, but their music has really turned wimpy since he took
over the vocals for VH... Plus, Eddie hasn't put out anything
interesting on guitar. It all seems to sound the same.... I know alot
of people think that Dave is more of a showman, but come on, songs like
"Humans Being" and "How do I know if it's love" seem so tame compared
to "Atomic Punk", and "And the cradle will rock"... At least every song
wasn't a love song back then......Yea, Dave needs to stay off the booz,
but he needs to give VH the kick in the pants that they need...Dusty
    <<<

In my opinion, DAVID LEE ROTH IS A GEEK! I saw him in concert in 94 in
a BAR and he sounded like shit. His appearance n The Tonight Show in
November was embarrasing, even Robin Williams was trying to distance
himself from Dave. I saw VH 3 times with "Diamond" Dave and twice with
Sammy. There is NO comparison. While I really enjoyed the Dave years,
Sammy has Roth beat 20 ways to one. Van Halen working with Roth again
is a step backwards in my opinion. And to back it up I'll make the same
offer I made on the Dokken list.

I have a DLR concert on audio recorded at the House Of Blues in L.A. in
1994. It is perfect quality. You can really hear Dave's voice as clear
as day. If anyone is interested, send me a :90 tape with an SASE and
I'll make a copy for you. If you make it through this tape without
becoming physically ill, then you have a stronger stomach than I do.

Actually, when I say that DLR is better than Sammy, I mean that more in a
studio sense...Roth has always been great in the studio and has had a great
voice too, but yes, I have heard that he sucks really bad live....DUSTY

    1) This could turn into a huge debate. Let's try to avoid that.

    2) They grew up. This is what they want to play now. They're like
Metallica in that regard. Like it or dislike it. That's what they feel
    like writing.

I completely, 100% disagree with this. If you have the feel among the band, you don't need the click. If you need the click, you don't have the vibe, and you're going to sound lousy anyway.

When did this happen? What's up with that? Remember:

K-line means you couldn't get onto the server. Ban means you could log on, but couldn't get into the channel. A ban might have been a one-off, or an accident, or something. But if you were k-lined, I have *no* idea why. Anyone?

    Hey,

Well don't I feel Sheepish (Baaaaaaaaah),

I stated here on the 'jam earlier that my contact at Magna Carta assured me that the Rush Trib would be released on July 23rd. Well, the day after I posted that, he called me to tell me that it will be released on August 6th.

To anyone in the Greater Detroit Area: Sam Goody will be carrying the "Working Man" Rush Tribute. I told our district manager about the disc and she's making sure all the stores get at least one in stock.

If they are out come on down to the Laurel Park Mall and get one from me at the Sam Goody there. I've had all the MC Tribs put ionto stock there. Well, later. -- _________________ _ ____________________ (^) (^) <-o->koggie@cyberspace.org is John R. Kotzian<-o-> (v)________________ __ __ ___________________(v)

Marty played one song that he and the drummer wrote while it "Deuce". It was quite heavy.

He said that he was able to get a record deal in Japan, > but has not been able to to so in Europe and the US yet. As for Chris's offer. I also bought "True Obsessions" as an import for $35. It was definately worth it. I was hoping I could help others on the Jam by finding out the US release date. I have also taped parts of "True Obsessions" for die hard friedman fans, knowing that when it comes out in the US they will buy it.

Marty also mentioned that when it comes out in the US it will have Bonus tracks on it!!! Damn it!!! Now I have to buy the US release too!!!

Funny that Mike Varney's name should come up. Since Shrapnel was Marty's previous label. I wonder why they didn't pick him up for this last release?? He has done at least 5 records with them!!

It was good to hear that Jon Oliva did make it and perform at the ETHYL MERTZ gig.

Yes! Sounds very progressive, and veeeerrrrry dark sounding music. Take Away My Pain? Burning My Soul? Hmmm, sounds like the guys are getting something off their chests. This I like. And 5 out of 8 of these songs are over 7 mins long! Two above 11! And is Metropolis part 2 still in the works? I doubt Mike Bahr would lie to us faithful jammers :) I know John P's been playing some very soulful stuff at his clinics that I truly enjoyed, I'd like to see some of that playing on the album. It would be a good "in-your-face" to anybody who thinks he's just another shredder.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Roddy Bottum left the band. Their guitarist (Jim Martin) quit, and their next album was entirely guitar-oriented, and the keyboards were so low in the mix that to this day I and others I know can't even hear them!

    DJKA

PS My personal opinion, for those who might care, is that The Real Thing is their best album in a commercial-style sense, but Angel Dust is their best from a more artistic standpoint. I've never heard anything from their first two albums, or Mr. Bungle, for that matter.

Jeez, I disagree on almost every point you made. My band used to cover Montrose songs, when Sammy wrote a lot of 'em. Great stuff! Then, I saw VH open for bands like the Doobie Brothers and REO back in '79. I LOVED the band, but never thought DLR was much of a singer. Guess I got used to him - my band did alot of VH covers, and at the same time Sammy was turning out, IMO, mediocre albums. We covered a couple of his songs, too, and for the most part, they were, well, boring. But when Sammy joined VH I thought it was a marriage made in heaven. Sammy seemed to improve immensely, and the band seemed happy to have a serious frontman. I'm sorry to see Sammy go.

NOW - if DLR can change his attitude and still keep his bombast, it might be a good band. That is, IF they keep him - I don't think they've decided yet.

Just my opinion - I respect yours, too.

That sounded like an awsome show. Galactic Cowboys have been here in El Paso,Tx twice this year. Wardog is from El Paso, although I had never seen them play or even heard of them until they signed with Metal Blade. Metal Blade had a show here about a month ago featuring Wardog and a bunch of other local bands. My band tried to audition but we didn't know until the day before the show. Anyway, I will be in Phoenix this Friday and I will be travelling there frequently over the next six months. Could you please E-Mail if you know of any Prog Rock bands performing there? Also, I would appreciate any info and recommendations on your city's rock clubs. I need somewhere to hang out after work. Thanks.

    Hey all,

Last Friday i received *Clockwork -- Weaving Webs of Time* from their drummer Anthony Sciamanna.

1st listen, Friday afternoon: I hear the influences of Shadow Gallery, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater...and i want to listen again.

10th listen, Monday night: I hear only Clockwork...and i want to listen again.

WTG, Anthony, excellent, excellent job. And if your new singer is as good as the rest of the band, then i can't wait for your next recording.

I just wanted to thank all the Jammers who've been giving their recommendations on the treasure trove of new (to me) prog that's out there. So far i've found, and not been disappointed by, Shadow Gallery, echolyn, Ilyvatar, and Marillion. I even rented and saw for the first time A Clockwork Orange. Thanks again everyone, and keep the great recommendations coming!!!

In addition to all these great new additions to my collection, i also got LiT last weekend. I've never seen DT live, so this was a treat. And i must say, i have garnered a new respect for JM...he's awesome!!! BTW, anyone think Portnoy looks, at times and w/o the facial hair, a little like Howard Stern?!? I dunno maybe it's just me :-)
