This has been a pretty cool week!

I got Critical Mass the other day. it rocks. So go get a copy.

But I want to talk more about a QR boot I just got in the mail. It's from
The Promised Land tour 5/24/95 from San Jose, CA. This boot kicks ass
too. It's from a soundboard. And the sound is excellent. Any QR fans
looking for a good boot, pick this one up. I got mine from the CDCellar.

I forgot to say that the QR boot is called "state of art."

I just got back from a bar where a cool blues band were playing.

The guitarist played a guitar solo, and I thought to myself "Hey, Rob
Barker could do better than that!"

The drummer played a drum solo, and I thought to myself "Hey, Ben
Laussade could do better than that!"

After the band left the stage, I noticed the singer was attached by the
tongue to a rather unattractive woman. I thought to myself "Hey, The
Digital Man could do better than that!"

P.S. This is my new email address and web URL. Please update your

Just a thought... pIRCh has a cool option that allows people to
exchange BIO's. Wouldn't it be cool if all of us IRC-Jammers started
using pIRCh and put together their own little bio (preferably with a
picture). Instead of having to check out IRC-pages on the WWW, we
could simply DCC each other our Bio's. We could even store them on
some FTP-site or put them on a www-page for downloading. We could
use our pIRCh Bio-viewer option to see who we're talking to, without
having to check some www-page or a picture on your harddisk...
    Like I said... it's just a though... but *I* like it :)
(Of course, I realize not everyone will be able to use pIRCh to chat)

Get yer copy of pIRCh @ http://www.bcpl.lib.md.us/~frappa/pirch.html

Well, It looks like the Rush Tribute will be released without a hitch this
coming Tuesday. As I'm sure everybody knows, it features Mike Portnoy quite
heavily as well as contributions from James and JP. Can't wait to hear it!!
It is on Magna Carte Records which is a small independant label, so it may
possibly take a little effort to locate, so you should start your search
    immediately!!!
It looks likely that this will have to serve as our DT fix for '96, so
everyone post their reviews and we can finally get some DT content on the jam
    again!!!

It's funny you mention Derek and the con because I spoke to him about it
the other night when he asked my to put up that post about the Peoples
gig. In short, he's heard about it, but he's not sure if he's going to
come. It's not that he doesn't want to; just that he acts somewhat
spontaneously and the cons later in the year. Knowing him and how
anxious he is to get out in front of the fans, he'll be at the con,
    though.

Ok second try (first time my connection died):

Today was good. I found a promo of ACOS in the used bin.
Then I spied all these other promos, but nothing worthwhile.
The guy at the counter said that some radio station dumped
their promos on them. Well the thought of ridding ones shelves
of DT made my stomach turn and then I remembered the sad
    state of radio.

Anyhow, a thought crossed my mind: wouldn't it be cool to
have our own radio station?! Call it WYJM. Playing prog,
metal, neojazzgroovyspinetinglin rock just for those
who appreciate a good tune. Of course why stop there - might
as well have our own recording studio in the back. There
jammers across the country could unite for some serious
sessions. Yeah, then on to telivision broadcasting... look
out MTV! Next thing you know we'll have our own breakfast
cereal. That in my eyes would be the shit. Once you got your
own cereal, it doesn't get any better than that.

Ok, too much sun for me today.
    Later,
    Scott

I only have 2 problems: 1, Hmmmm. . . let me think if I can play Petrucci's solo's, no. My only other problem is that I live way out in San Diego, it's hard to find people to jam DT with!! Laters!!!

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Here's just a reminder about the YtseCon III! The convention will take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY) on Saturday, October 12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have already spoken to Dream Theater an their management and I've already sent them the details in writing. Things look really good and they should be there (according to various members of Dream Theater).

The cost for the pre-paid tickets will be $20 per person. It will be $25 at the door. If you pay for tickets in advance, I will send you the tickets (which will end up being authentic numbered name tags) through the mail. To pay for tickets, please make a check out to:

    YtseCon III

    and send it to:

YtseCon III c/o Jeff Chew 350 Broadway, suite 703 New York, NY 10013

If you are in need of a hotel room, we have reserved rooms at the LA Guardia Marriot. The cost will be $100 per room. You can always split the cost with other jammers. If you need us to find you someone to room with, contact me at jc309@columbia.edu, or give me a call at (516) 674-4828. The rest of my contact numbers are in my .sig. The way this will work will be that I will get a number of requests for people who want someone to room with. The default for splitting rooms will be four persons per room. So, All you will have to pay will be $25 each person for each night. I will set people up with each other based on who sends in their share of the rooming first (unless you request to room with someone in particular).

So, if you need a room, please e-mail me or give me a ring. Also, if you are in need of airfare, you can contact Rich Worldwide Travel at 1-800-431-1130. Just tell them that you are going to the "Dream Theater convention" and they will know what you are talking about. They can give you prices and such, and you can order your plane tickets through them.

Oops, almost forgot, please contact me when you send out the money for the YtseCon III (tickets and/or hotel). I have Chris Merlo doing the head count for me (thanks Chris, I'm sure that all of that number counting is driving you crazy by now!).

Well, that's it from here. Hope to hear from you!

    Yours, Jeff =)

I know this is a few days old now, but I'm behind on the digests and I just read it. Someone mentioned that A Clockwork Orange (the film, not the book) was banned in the U.K. and that this was censorship. From what I understand, A Clockwork Orange was banned by Kubrick himself after it supposedly inspired young people to commit crimes very similar to those in the film. Since Kubrick owned the copyrights, he prohibited it to be screened or sold in the U.K. I could be wrong, but that is what I understand. Jeff Falk King_of_the_Nighttime_World@msn.com

The tribute album idea sounds vaguely familiar. I believe it's been tried. I agree it's a good idea, but a difficult one to make work. I'd contribute myself, but JM's just too far above me. :-} I hope it works out for you this time. I'm gonna see Sting (I hope) on Wednesday at Pine Knob. Anyone else gonna be there? I heard his show this year's really good. Whatever happened to having Terry Brown do the Dream Theater album? I can't wait to hear the album. Finally, it seems like I'm missing a few jams. The numbers don't seem to be going right, and I haven't been getting them as often as usual. Is this happening to anyone else, or is my ISP screwed as usual? That IS their intentions....to prevent someone from doing that....but not in the way you think, John.... Smashing Pumpkins fired the drummer, because he is now a serious legal liability!!!!!!! They have an incredible amount to answer to about the keyboardist...it's a smart legal decision to fire him (the drummer)......I don't think it has anything to do with the drummer's recreational habits.... I thought the same thing for the first couple seconds. I know I'm risking being charbroiled here, but I really don't care for the scratch he uses. It is a little harsh sounding at times. It works well in The Mirror and Caught in A Web, but I would have preferred to hear him soar a little more on tracks like 6:00 and Lie. Then again, I bought I&W first and think that record is stronger musically. Interestingly enough, I was reading the All Music Guide review of I&W and they gave it an 8/9. Awake, on the other hand, only scored 4/9. I would be willing to bet that a big part of that was the change in vocal styles. After ACOS, I'm starting to think that he may be going back to his cleaner sound; at least, I hope so.

    >>>>> Met!??!! Who the hell is going to play the center section? If >we can actually pull that off, I am quitting my government job and >going back to the business for a living.<<<< > >I think I could make that middle section vocally ;-)

Haha! I can picture the life video of that. Dave walks to the front of the stage, sits down and drinks a Perrier while intermittently checking his watch to see when the next vocal segment is due. If they played an extended version, you might even have time for a nap. :) Other activities that can be undertaken during this time might be as follows:

    1. Read War and Peace. 2. Translate all of the DT lyrics into Mandarin. 3. Play hopscotch or skip rope in front of MP's drum riser. 4. Write an accurate definition of "Progressive music". 5. Donate to Charlie Dominici c/o O Holy Night Productions. 6. Recall accurately, all the titles of DT's live instrumentals. 7. Tenderize the sirloin for the evening's BBQ with a mallet. 8. Stuff or pluck some turkeys for the next major holiday. 9. Hand out MP robes to all fans who are cold. 10. Autograph the breasts of all women in the front row.

I know it's a sort of top ten but I in a hell raising mood today. ;)

    Cheers,

    Rick Toronto

That's about all..... Talk to you >kids later. Alright! Another Jammer jumps on board. However, I have some concerns about this approach. While we want this thing to have a certain degree of flash to it, the goal is to allow, to my understanding, all the Jammers to participate if they are so inclined. After all, not everyone who listens to DT may be musically gifted, but he or she may have something to contribute in the way of an interpretation of a passage. Besides, I don't think I would want to be the one to tell someone, "Sorry, you're just not good enough to be recorded." I have been rejected at auditions in the Toronto area and it's not a pleasant experience. Granted it's a risk in competition, but it still hurts. Also, how could we vote on a panel of judges without knowing if they were truly qualified to make these decisions? I'm just afraid that someone who is a hardcore fan of the band will be left out. It would be a true tragedy if we were united on a cause and then split into participants and observers, particularly in an online family where we all have the right to participate. I think a practical plan, should this go ahead, would be to let anyone take a stab at it who is so inclined. After all, we're not looking at world wide release for this. :) If Mike Bahr wants to do a limited CD run of it, it would be a wonderful souvenir of our membership in the Jam. Even if we just mix to metal cassettes, it would still be great. It could be a Jammers only thing which might make it a collectible in itself. In addition, I would propose that copies be presented to the band officially at a CON. They gave us ACOS because we were vocal. Now it's our chance to use our collective voices and give something back to them. (Takes on John Belushi Animal House posture): Who's with me?!?!! Let's go!!

It just works for me. Also, I have never been a tobacco smoker. People, if you love to sing or aspire to it, please quit or better yet, don't start!! I personally know 2 singers in this area who had voices EQUAL to James when they were the age that he was on I&W. However, they smoking completely fucked their voices. It's such a shame. One of them could sing EXACTLY the way James does. He also had training from Rosemary Burns. Over a couple of years of abuse though, he broke his own instrument. Permanently. What makes it even sadder is the fact that his band was dropped by a major label when his voice started giving him problems on tour. I'm sorry for preaching about this, but I take it VERY seriously. I watched a family member die of lung cancer five years ago and the pain of her death is still as fresh and raw now as it was in 1991. Life is too precious to waste. Make the most of it by avoiding the tobacco that the grim reapers in the tobacco companies are telling you is hip and stylish. Not only will you feel better, but your loved ones will thank you for it! Thanks for indulging me.

I agree. Many musicians believe that writing or playing high takes their output to the next level. It doesn't. The band I did the demo with, Cadence, fired two members over the last 5 years for drug use. One of these was the drummer. Greg was a fantastic player whose biggest rock influences were Peart, Alan White and Clive Burr (Ex-Iron Maiden). He had terrific stamina and insight....until he discovered coke. Then his timing started to slip and he became hard to work with in the studio. When you are spending someone else's money, you can't afford to waste it. It hurts to fire someone you've know for 15 years, but you can't allow yourself to be stalled at the starting line by irresponsibility. In the end, after rehab, he has become a counselor for the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto and teaches kids how to avoid making the same mistakes he made. We remain close and he is working with me on a project in my spare time and yes, he is on top of his game in music once again. I love happy endings! :) God! From all of the preaching in this message you guys are going to think I'm a Born Again Christian! 8-| ) >>

Cheers, (I still enjoy my beer though)

    Rick Toronto
