This sounds like a great idea. I volunteer to sing any song that people
want to do. <Of course, the singer's job is easy since it's so easy to
"learn" a song that you've been listening to for years.> How would we
pull it off, though? Mail multi-track tapes all over the country? :)
Find a studio in a central location? Hmmmm...

About Ray Alder live: He's very inconsistent. He'll sing one line just
fine, but the next one will be soooooo out of tune. He always seems to be
out of breath, too. That, no doubt, is due to his dynamic stage antics.
    Hell of a range though.

About James on Surrounded: That's good, but IMO it's easier to sing like
that than it is to really wail. <I don't really mean "wail," but...> Here
are some of my favorite James moments:

"I'm lying here in bed..." --Voices
"I was blinded by a paradise..." --ACoS
"...it calms me to know that I won't." --Scarred
    "Woah...woah...WOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" --Learning to Live

    See ya!

okay, um...i THINK i sent this to the jam already, but i sure as hell don't remember reading it, so i'll post it again for the benefit of the band involved... my friend brian (fellow DT fan) met a guy from a metal group named Sonipath. he said they're really good, and more metal than progressive, but in a few of their songs they show some progressive roots. he's gone to i think two of their rehearsals, in Rockville Center, and tells me that they rehearse in the same basement (get this) that DT practiced in way back when! (of course he flipped out when he discovered this, and freaked out the band when he started touching the walls...) but anyway, he wanted me to post this stuff about the band because they're gonna be recording soon... the # for band info is 764-7237, and you can e-mail them at Sonipath13@aol.com they're playing two shows soon... July 24th @ AI (2015 New Highway, Melville, NY) the # there is 753- 2040. July 26th @ Slam (323 Main St., Farmingdale, NY) the # there is 845- 5387. both shows start at 11pm...if anyone plans on going to either of them LET ME KNOW cuz i live in Farmingdale and both venues are within walking distance of where i live. of course, i don't know if i can go, but it'd be cool to know that a few jammers were in my neck o' the woods. :)

Being a fairly big FNM fan I though I would give my .02 on this topic, Ill start at the Mike Patton era since I dont know much about any of the stuff that came before.

The Real Thing: This is an amazing album. I agree witht he person who said that it wouldnt have been concidered a pop album at the time it was released. That one song just caught on. I like Patton's voice on this album and I have been somewhat dissappointed that he hasnt sounded the same since. I think the album should have had a thicker bass sound, but that doesnt detract from the greatness of this record. "The Real Thing" is a great track.

Angel Dust: Mike Pattons influence on the band is felt at its most here. This album is really dark and I didnt like it when I first heard it, but it has grown on me and I think it is a great album. Lyrically it is more in the style of Mr. Bungle...and even at some points musically. Its fairly obvious that Patton was given a good deal of say when it came to the writing of this album. "Jizzlobber" fucking rules!

King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime: This album is more straightforward rock. A major disappointment was the lack of keyboards on many of the tracks. This record was less radical than Angel Dust, and not as dark. Personally, I didnt care for this album, it didnt seem very focused and didnt have the quality that I would have expected from FNM. I wound up trading the CD to a friend after a while. WHat probably happened was that the band wanted to sell more records(Angel Dust sales were disappointing), but didnt want to write a very pop like album. Hopefully the next record will be more focused.

Just to be safe Ill say that all the above is my opinion.

I noticed some idividuals giving Queensryche and White Zombie a hard time because they use clicks, and sequences, samplers and the like....

well all they want to do is recreate everything as close to thier recording as possible! I am not sure about White Zombie but Queensryche has to perform to the click or thier back drop (huge screens) would not sinc up with them, so in order to put on the best show possible Scott Rockenfield needs to listen to the click to insure the show looks right! I think its incredible that they can still keep that going throughout the night , yet another talent of Queensryche, to me shows that these people are superb musicians!

back to Dream Theater you know, i have wondered about their use of sequences....ever watch the video Images and Words Live in Tokyo?? in the middle of Fortune in Lies, when mike portnoy is doing the snare drum solo, with john keeping up on guitar Rather Fast, the lights go out and they are supossibly playing but i really think that what you are hearing is actually a sequence????? I dont know but i am real suspicious, and i dont blame them if it is...lol we all know that they can use a little relief from all that performing and playing!

So what if they use a little help here and there? you know it is virtually impossible to recreate everything on the album without using some sequences, and samples....so would you rather they left out all that than use the samples? I think it shows more talent the ability to insert them and perform with a computer that is not going to adjust for your mistakes like another musician can...??? did you ever think of that??? well enough of the long talk...hope you all give em a break!

Hey folks! I couldn't help overhearing about this idea of recording a DT tribute. Great idea! Whoever came up with that is a genius in my book. In fact, I might have another idea to go with it. This august I'm starting courses in sound engineering and conception at a private school up in downtown Montreal. The school's name is Trebas Institute, you might have heard about it before (that's where Dave Mustaine of Megadeth went for his engineering courses too). Anyways, I'm in a band, and my guitarist is a grad from there. Here's the kicker: from now on, whenever we want to rent Trebas's studio (which is of Internatonal standards BTW), instead of paying 100$/hr, we get a rate of...(drum roll) 35$/hr!!! And since he's got his diploma, he can even engineer the production. I guess a lot of you must be trained for it too, so whoever can, please step forward. This could be great for all the 'jam's musicians, because of the exposure. Hell, I could even sell them, too, since I work in a music store! Can you Imagine this? National distribution!...of course, provided we get the mass production, that everybody has some green to put in, and that I'm not having delusions of grandeur. If ANYONE thinks this is a good idea, please say so. I especially want to sing on "To Live Forever", so this would be a "Dream" come true, and I think not only for me!!

    Get 'jammin, y'all, Seb

I saw a blip on MTV about that guy OD-ing. Apparently he shot himself up with heroine. Next thing he knew he woke up in the back of an ambulance. But in his words he's "not a heroine addict, just an IV drug addict." Hmm, that still doesn't take him off my pathetic human being list.

Is it really that hard to say no to drugs!?!?

You heard right. This is from the Pantera Digest, taken from MTV News.

    From: PANTERAHEL@aol.com Date: Fri, 19 Jul 1996 04:27:13 -0400 Subject: Mouth4War: PHIL OVERDOSED

Directly From MTV News Online on AOL about Phil's overdose to clear up anybody's questions. Thanks, PANTERAHEL

Pantera singer Phil Anselmo died of a heroin overdose last Saturday, but then, according to him, came back from the dead, and has kept right on touring. This latest rock O.D. incident, coming one day after the heroin-overdose death of Smashing Pumpkins tour keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, took place after a Pantera concert in Dallas, at the Starplex Ampitheatre.

After repeated calls to his label and management from MTV News, Anselmo himself released a statement in which he said, "I injected a lethal dose of heroin into my arm, and died for four to five minutes. There was no lights, no beautiful music, just nothing. And then, after 20 minutes (from what I heard later), my friends slapped me and poured water over my head, all basically trying to revive me. The paramedics finally arrived and all I remember is waking up in the back of an ambulance. From that point all I knew all I wanted was to be back on the tour bus going to the next gig. Instead I was going to the hospital where I was released very shortly." Anselmo was taken to Baylor Medical Center, and released shortly thereafter. "You see, I am not a heroin addict," he emphasizes in his statement, "but I am (was) an intravenous drug abuser.

The lesson learned here is that every nightmare ever heard about O.D.-ing and/or heroin is terribly true." The moral of the story, in Anselmo's words, "I will not die so easily. I'm here to piss off the music press for a long time to come."

    ------

I was at that Dallas show, and it kicked ass, by the way. But I had no idea that this thing had happened until I read it on the Pantera list. Kind of sobering. All these people on the Pantera list are like shocked because we'd all assumed Phil was a pothead, no big deal, but we figured he'd be a little stronger than to be doing smack...

    Scott.

    dusty asked about phil's OD.

phil overdosed on heroin and legally died for 4-5 minutes and was brought back to life by paramedics. he's one lucky son of a bitch. he's quoted as saying that he's not an addict, but that he is an abuser of intravenous drugs. maybe this will open his eyes a little. but, even though i love pantera, i suspect he'll, at best, just find something else to abuse.

For most of you, sorry about bandwidth waste (and can someone explain the concept of bandwidth to me clearly?) but I neede to put this on open forum

This is a copy of an apology i sent Brian Cox LAST TUESDAY, just making it public and making sure he sees it, since he's probably been too busy to acknowledge it, and making it clear I didn't blow him off.....a third party evidently believes that a lack of public (on-jam) communication=total lack of communication In summary: I fucked up making the comment I did, I don't know of BC's trading rep, expect for the fact I surely appreciated the Birch Hill tape tree efforts.....
