Sorry to post on the same subject twice, BUT . . .
You are incorrect. The films you mention are available to watch in cinemas in
the UK. They have not been released on video or shown on TV . . . I think
that's probably because they wanted to be extra-sure that no under-18s
would get to see them.
> It's unabashed censorship, but that's legal in the U.K.
Well, I'm not going to mention a certain government which tried to ban
free speech on the internet . . . and remember, you aren't
allowed to criticise a country of which you are not a citizen (according to
Scott Cook).

Yeah, you're probably right there. But FNM has always been, in large part,
about having a sense of humor. "Midnight Cowboy," I think, fits there...

See above. This is probably the best of his solo stuff, as far as I've

It's a good record, but I like Focus a lot....probably a little more.

It's a boot. Taken from Madison Square Garden on the Counterparts tour.
It's basically a good audience recording, not well-regarded by most Rush
boot experts, really (I'm not one, to be honest). I'm fond of it,
though....the set's to my liking as much as anything.

I can't really agree there. I'm a musician and not a druggie, but I don't
think that the proportion of drugs in the musical world really resembles the
rest of the world. I mean, they're high profile, but so are athletes. And
we can talk about Michael Irvin and Les Bias and Willie Wilson until the
cows come home, but if we become aware of the drug use of an athlete, it's a
big deal, a surprise. It's only an issue with musicians if it keeps them in
rehab forever. Drugs are only really discussed with reference to those
people for whom it was a big issue....Jerry Garcia, Layne Staley, Kurt
Cobain, Jimi Hendrix. The occasional binge drinking and pot smoking of
other musicians is a relative non-issue. Not that athletes are a
representative issue, either. But I don't think the issue is publicized for
no reason.

Well I figured the rest of you Ytsejammer guitarists might want to hear
about this. There are two sessions, one in LA the other in Boston. I fear
it's probably too late to get into the LA one, since they start July 21 and
go until July 27. The Boston registration deadline is July 31 and the
program starts August 18 and goes until the 23. I know that JP will be doing
a clinic/concert at the Boston session, and if I remember correctly another
person appearing will be John Whitfield(?), I'm not familier with this
player and am only going by what the guy told me. For more info you can call...

Berklee College of Music
Berlkee Summer Guitar Sessions
in Boston
1140 Boylston Street, Mailbox 23
Boston, Massachusetts 02215-3693
Each days schedule also includes the usual Berklee classes and experience
with players. You can stay at the dorms or drive in every day. You have
until July 31st to register for the Boston sessions. Tuition is $425 and is
you want to house there it's another $200, this is actually a pretty good
rate as it includes meals for the whole week! I got all this info from the
registration form they sent me. I hope some of you guys will take the
opportunity and also give me some fello DT fans to jam with and have a good
time!

This message is regarding the Jam DT tribute. If people are seriously
considering getting people from all over to collaborate, I would suggest
that demo tapes of that person's ability on their instrument (or voice)
be submitted to a panel of ytsejudges (or something like that).
Secondly, I would be happy to head up this committee should we
choose to go through with this idea. That's about all..... Talk to you

Hello Jammers,
Someone listed info on a prog concert in Louisville, from what I could
decipher from Shawn (guitar- Boud Deun) at Progscape, this is going to be
an RIO/jazz prog type concert, should be pretty cool. I've heard from a
couple of sources that French TV is excellent (though I haven't heard any
of their music), and Boud Deun is one of my favorite bands, they have
technical ability and the jamming and improvisation strength to bring
almost any band to their knees. Boud Deun is an all instrumental band
consisting of Rocky (drums), Shawn (guitar), Matt (bass), and Greg
(violin). They sound similar to a heavy version of Mahavishnu Orchestra
with influences of King Crimson, Yes, Mr. Bungle, Dead Kennedies, The
Muffins, Phish, and several other bands. Prepare for musical overload,
their bass player Matt will make your jaw hit the floor.
Later,
Mike

Greetings, jammers!
I saw Metallica on the Lollapalooza tour on Tuesday. They were incredible!
Fade to Black ripped me a new asshole! They didn't play a lot of new stuff,
which I appreciated at the time, but in retrospect i think it was a mistake.
I was hoping to get into the new stuff by seeing how it comes across live,
but the only songs they played from Load were Ain't my Bitch <which is a
great song anyway>, Until it Sleeps <which I like but it isn't exciting live>
and maybe two more. Lotsa fireworks--COOL! Highlights? Well, when they
finished One, James walks up to the mic and says, "Well, that kicked some ass,
didn't it?" And when Lars, after the third time they were called back, says,
"Hey, Metallica just headlined Lollapalooza...HA HA HA HA HA HA!" I was
thouroughly unimpressed with Soundgarden. Their lack of stage presence and
Chris Cornell's general ignorance of the audience in the venue that made them
faamous was only slightly less offputting than when the bass player started
cussing off the audience for no apparent reason at all. I think Soundgarden
needs to realize that without Lollapalooza they may not be as famous as they
are. The drummer was really good, though.
Hey, Metallica headlines Lollapalooza this summer. Maybe that will open some
doors <and hopefully some MINDS> and we may see a Dream Theater Lollapalooza.
Who knows? :)

Hey,
Jams have slowed down. Haven't received one yet today. But I did
get SFAM (#229) yesterday. CIAW blew me away! The first time you hear
this arrangement is quite a shock. I was thinking before I played it
and was reading the song titles 'another source for the same old
song'-what a surprise. The effect is not the same the second time you
hear it because you're expecting it now. The first listen to Oliver's
Twist was the opposite. All I heard was the same song without vocals.
But the second time I heard something else I didn't hear the first
time but have heard many times before. I'm being evasive because for
the rest of the jammers who haven't yet heard theirs I won't kill the
surprise. As published, Charlie's live performance is less than
impressive, but the band is great as expected. Now, as far as ACOS
goes, this too is a surprise for me. This is the first recording of
the original way it was done for me, even though no Labrie. There are
parts of this version I don't understand why they changed it. Before
the studio release, all I had was a dub of Subconcious version. My
opinion on that is simply I don't like it. I know that's sacrilege
but that's my opinion. So now I can appreciate the early original way
it was done. I miss the intro but can take or leave the studio
outtro. I always felt they should have faded up the outtro guitar
from the loud explosive part at the end and not just abruptly bring
in the guitar at one level. Also I now have a clear copy of Eve but I
miss the story about the cow :> All in all a very good CD. This makes
for me 4 boots on CD-3 from Mike, 1 from Marcel. This has been wordy
enough so I'll stop boring you.

Got my Critical Mass in today. The last couple of days have been kinda
shitty for me so this was a pleasant surprise. I must admit the sound
quality is absolutely incredible! I had heard rumors that this came off
a VHS tape; well, I'm not a very good judge of sources, but I can't
tell any tape noise at all. So if it did then Mike did an incredible
mastering job. Is the sound quality better than A Show of Hands? I
don't think it ia. BUT, Rush has money for one gazillion track
recorders and state of the art mixers, and Mike has access to some cool
equipment, but nothing to compare with what rush has access to.
Bottom Line: This is the best cd that Mike Bahr has released to date
(and I don't pass out compliments that easily) and if you're a Rush
fan, then this is a definite Must have. Don't walk, RUN to the mailbox
with a money order and send for Critical Mass, you won't be
disappointed.
