This is something that I got from the National Midnight Star. Knowing
that there are a few Styx fans out here, I thought I'd share, for those
of you that don't get or read the NMS. Weird how this ties in to recent
    threads, huh?

hey, did anyone else catch Slash on Politically incorrect last nite? w/ the thread of drugs going on i thought i'd mention the comment he made- he said that nothing--not politics, not music, art, business--none of it, could exist without drugs. its true that they've been around... and probably always will BE around. i'm not too sure how i stand on this subject however... people addicted to heroin and cocaine are pretty fucking pathetic to me... [snip] ha! i snipped it before you could see it! :P i was getting a little to involved, let me just stop at that :) i'll kick in more thoughts if the thread rolls on. ~Rip

Dan, mi vaca hermano, said something about DT being on compukeserve and misspelling both their names..... i think it was probably just some dude b.s.ing ya in that case...... check this- my friend said he talked to a guy he thought was mike inez last night on prodigy... "mike" said he was doing the tour w/ ozzy and he was screaming all this bullshit nobody actually in the 'biz', only a fan, would say. now first off- alice in chains is on tour RIGHT NOW, and ozzy is going to be here tomorrow, so obviously its NOT TRUE. ozz's got that bassplayer from suicidal tendencies btw, which i wish he'd get mike back..... and zakk..... :( more food for thought ~Rip

let me get a few things straight.

1: Roddy Boddum is _NOT_ out of Faith No More. Yes, he's in Imperial Teen, but Patton's in Mr. Bungle.

2: Puffy is _NOUT_ out of Faith No More. Yes, he's drumming for Ozzy.

3: Dean Marenta is out of Faith No More.

4: Patton released a solo album in April "Adult Themes For Voice", and is currently writing for the new Faith No More album.

5: 10 songs have been written for the new FnM album <bass, drums, keyboards> and they are waiting for Patton's vocals. Probably Billy Gould (he does the guitar work on Another Body Murdered) will do the guitar work.

6: New Faith No More album due: Winter 1997. Confirmed.

    any questions? come to me.

Well, be that as it may, Paul Masvidal told my buddy that they were taking the band in a new direction, and that it wasn't going to be calkled Cynic anymore. Jason Gobel was playing with them at the time, but the only other familiar face with the band was the female keyboardist/vocalist (who is by the way, an immensly talented musician, tho I can't remember her name). What we've seen from Chris Kringle was only average, so I don't stand prepared to be impressed by the bass playing unless he's been woodshedding.

I know it to be a fact that Reinart wasn't with Cynic for some time... if he's back with the group then that tells me this new album won't be a bust, but I hear the last thing the guys were doing (I refer to Jason and Paul) was more like pop and mainstream oriented... not really even metal. I don't expect to see another Cynic album... not the Cynic I knew.

You must remember though that the 60s was the time when the drug culture got into full swing with people smoking weed everywhere and "tripping out" on Timothy Leary's new best friend, LSD. People expected Hendrix to OD as a result of the volume of drugs he took. The politically correct 90s don't allow for using drugs to be considered an act of propriety. Sure it happens, but users tend to run in tight knit groups and don't advertise their usage of a substance, particularly if they hold a public position. The Pumpkins could not afford to be known as h-heads. It would have resulted in boycotts of their records by special interest groups and, quite probably, younger fans as well. I have a feeling that there's more than one surviving user in that band that we haven't heard about. The saddest thing about this whole thing is that the further the individual's substance abuse gets from the public eye, the more likely it is to result in a fatality.

I agree that it is more profitable to trade for material rather than blanks, but if you have demand reciprocity for every trade you do, it begins to look petty after a while. Brian is one of the people who still does trade for blanks and I have GREAT respect for him for that reason. If no one traded for blanks, then little trading would occur since no one would be gaining anything. Even in the heights of our current technological period, I doubt there are that many people who own DATs to tape live shows. It would be interesting to do a poll of the number of Jammers who have taped stuff live. I would think the percentage would be quite insignificant. I don't mind trading for blanks at all. Personally, I have always that the joy of music was in the sharing, not the profiting. Just my opinion and not a Kingsford Charcoal flame! :)

    >3. The soundtrack to 'A Clockwork Orange' doesn't need re-doing or being fucked >around with by anybody. The stuff that Walter Carlos did in collaboration with >Robert Moog was essentially the birth of the synthesizer as we know it, and was >certainly progressive at the time. However, the German band "Die Toten Hosen" >did the music for a stage version of the story, and it turned out great. (Rick, >I've got it on vinyl too).

Aha! The Brotherhood of the Sacred Vinyl lives on! The thing that's so strange about the soundtrack, is the presence of the vocoder. For those who have never seen one, and who probably still have all of their hair ( 8-| ) >>, the vocoder is the keyboard equivalent of the talk box for guitar. when the keyboard is depressed and a word is spoken into the attached microphone, the word is articulated as a chord. Saga fans can hear one on the track See Them Smile from the Images At Twilight Record. Note: Shameless plug for this excellent Toronto area band is 100% intentional! :)

p.s. Hi Jim, Steve, and Ian if you still have your net accounts! Get a hold of me when you get back to Toronto and we'll toss back a couple of draft! :)

I agree completely. In addition, the band's command of English was not great on this record and some of the lyrics are just horrible. One song, Fairy's Dance, talks of a young man who is seduced by a woman, only to discover that she has the body of a rotting cow with horns and a tail, when he looks at her reflection in a pool of water. After he has been deceived, she turns him into a cow. I warned you about the lyrics!

    >The most impressive example of this is on the beginning of "Surrounded".

Oh man! The tapered breathing as the note decays just about makes me want to take a vow of silence! James is a truly gifted performer. I just hope that he sings cleaner on the next record. The scratch vocal is okay, but it hides his technique quite a bit.

    >OK. Subscriptions open: I'll do bass on Erotomania. Seriously, this is >something that can be done: a jam-tribute to DT! I bet here on the jam, >there are enough musos to make up 10 DT line-ups. Hey, I'm in if I can get to the studio. Although I've been playing guitar for 15+ years, don't look for me to start playing the solo from Lie any time soon. JP's picking technique is rather advanced!

    >Metropolis, Wait for Sleep, The Silent Man, Another Day, ACoS, The Killing H= >and.

Met!??!! Who the hell is going to play the center section? If we can actually pull that off, I am quitting my government job and going back to the business for a living. Personally, although TSM would be an easy cover, I would rather do something like A Fortune In Lies. We could assign one singer to each track or do it in the same way that the Hear 'N' Aid project was done with each vocalist taking a couple of lines. Oh man! I'm getting very excited about this. I have been practicing UAGM and can now hit that high note that James does live (when he takes the word "name" up one octave from the usual). I can only hold it about 5 seconds at that pitch, but hey, it's a start! :)

    Cheers,

DT is definitely underground. What I'm afraid of with the rumours that the next will be partly more commercial, is that they land a mega-hit like what happened with "One" for Metallica. So bye-bye standing out of the crowd, bye-bye identity.

    Hi there,

to answer the question of one jammer, I can say that it exists at least 2 bootlegs with Winter Rose material. Both are on the same Japanese label: Jailbait.

The first one is called 'Winter rose in the dream' and contains 5 tracks demoed in 89 by Winter Rose, other among stuff. The sound quality is not very good.

The second one is called 'Another days of Dream Theater' and contains 8 tracks from a show of Winter Rose, Toronto 03.23.90. This is not the complete show, only the end of the it. The sound quality is quite bad, unfortunately because I own a copy of the complete show and it sounds very good (FM broadcast). This boot is completed with the 8 first tracks (from 'Song for Eric' to Nora') of Kevin Moore's 'Music meant to be heard'.

These two boots are not worth to be bought if you're not a die hard fan. Jailbait doesn't take a good care of the making of their CD. I think it is just to make money.

I'm interested by DAT / tape trades. I've got about 150 DT shows and demos, audio and video. Don't hesitate to e-mail me...

    Hi again!

More NDTC from me. CONCEPTION has been mentioned a few days ago. They are a very good band from Scandinavia, an their albums have been released on NOISE records. The three albums are as follows (I'm not sure about the release dates, but they are in the right order) : - The Last Sunset (1991) - Parallel Minds (1993) - In Your Multitude (1995) It took me a while to get into "The Last Sunset", but now I like them all. They compare in sound to THRESHOLD (I recommend them once in a while), that means they play very melodic progressive METAL with interesting rhythm guitar parts. Pick up any of these albums, if you can!!!

Well, as others did that, I do it too : announcing CDs for sale : Voivod - War and Pain (jewel box has a few dust scratches) Voivod - Nothingface Dio - Strange Highways Helstar - Multiples Of Black J. Geils Band - Best Of Preferrably they are sold all together, but I sell them separately, too. I'm asking for $6 for one, $5 each if you take more than one, plus shipping.

Check out THRESHOLD and CONCEPTION (as well as BLIND GUARDIAN) !!!
