No, I wouldn't suggest for a moment that Brian C. should be listed in
-any- list as a Bad Trader. If my post to the 'Jam came out a little
harshly, I'm sorry. (Believe me, if I was -really- mad about it,
there wouldn't be any question. When I sling the vitriol, people
notice. :)) Shit happens and the Real World (tm) can intrude -- hey,
no problem. Treat my message as a ping.

Also, What That Other Jammer Said, about the tape tree project(s). They
are appreciated and help make this online community just that little
    bit stronger. :)

I am sorry if I offended anyone with my header, but you have to hear this. I am out at local bar Tuesday night, and in the Juke box they have Images and Words. I am delighted to see this and quickly make two selections from the album. The singer from the band playing that night starts to comment on DT. Now his band is called Steel breeze. They play a wide variety of covers (no DT) He starts to say that DT's manager called him up 5 years ago to audition for the band. He says he turned down the offer cause he thought they sounded like Chris squire jerking off. He then proceeds to say " I'm glad I didn't join them because their last two albums didn't do dick". I then say to him " Oh, and Steel Breeze has sold 5million copies of their last album right?" Then he got mad, but I couldn't let it go, so I say "Obviously you made the right career choice, that's why you are playing to 15 people who could care less about your band." Well next thing you know he takes a swing at me and misses, but the bouncer comes over and throws him out. So not only did he make a fool of himself, but he also lost the gig. Retribution is so sweet.

yo. i just got home from day #3 of the macintosh new music festival in nyc. amongst the people i saw was none other than vernon reid. just him, the samchillian cheep cheep teepee guy, and dj logic. weird, but awesome. got my picture with him, too, which is even better. wished him good luck with crimson.

while there, the guy at the gate saw my dt shirt and said "hey thye're awesome. i like the bassist- the chinese guy." i was trying hard not to laugh.

and after i left, a bum was asking for change, and he saw my shirt, and he was like, "yo, i know them- dream theater. they have a song..lemme see if i remember it......take me under, take me under.....damn, what's that other line?" i laughed. i HAD to give him change. he really tried. made me wonder how this guy even knew they existed.

since it's this fucking late, no more fun stories for now. mirthandir, i got your email, and once i have time to sit and serach my info, i will share with you, so hang tight.

    Hi all

Random rumblings from Dr. Dildo's chamber of horrors (aka Neil's brain):

    1. The easiest way to store large numbers of CDs is to stick the friggers on a couple of big shelves in alphabetical order. Cheap and flexible.

    2. Back in the dark gloomy days of my past when I was still at school, we read and compared '1984', 'Brave New World' and 'A Clockwork Orange' in our English literature class. 'A Clockwork Orange' is a great book, very disturbing in what it predicts as the future of (western) society as we know it. But I think it goes even deeper than just the decay of society and morals, and deals with the fundamental question of man's free will. Also, of the three books, I think it is the vision of the future that we are currently nearest to, especially if you look at the things being suggested by some of the more loony right-wing politicians concerning prison reform etc.

    3. The soundtrack to 'A Clockwork Orange' doesn't need re-doing or being fucked around with by anybody. The stuff that Walter Carlos did in collaboration with Robert Moog was essentially the birth of the synthesizer as we know it, and was certainly progressive at the time. However, the German band "Die Toten Hosen" did the music for a stage version of the story, and it turned out great. (Rick, I've got it on vinyl too).

    4. I hear rumours that Cathedral will be having a new album out soon: anybody know anything about it?

    5. I hear rumours that Dream Theater will be having a new album out soon... Oh, we've already done that one.

    6. Competition time kiddies. Complete the following sentence in not less than one thousand words: "I like Dream Theater because...". Send all entries to the Green Day mailing list. The author of the winning entry will get his/her mailbox jammed for at least two weeks.

    7. Nominal Dream Theater content: my girlfriend uses her t-shirt from the Awake tour as a night shirt.

    8. Mape, can you mail me your CD list again?

stay safe and happy listening (or whatever else you do to get your kicks) Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

    Hey jammers,

I'm new to the ytse jam and this is my first message. So here it is.

A few digests ago someone was talking about Concepton. The album I believe

they heard was "In Your Multitudes." They were wondering about their other albums (they have 2 more). "Parrallel Minds" is their second album and I think its just as good as IYM. The guitarist is an incredible shredder as well as a very tastful player. PM is not quite as progressive as IYM but there are still alot of great songs. "The Last Sunset" is their first album. I've only heard pieces of it but from what I heard I don't think it is as good as the other two. The production wasn't as good and the songs seemed a little dull. But I haven't heard much so don't take my word for it. All three albums are available from Dream Disc which is a CD mail order place in Indiana. They're only $12 last time I checked. Here the address for Dream Disc.

Dream Disc 214 West North St. Kendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone: 219-347-8080 Fax: 219-347-8895

Just get them to send you a catalog. There's alot of cool, hard to find prog bands in it.

Syphony X is another prog metal band a recently got ahold of. Any diehard Yngwie fans will love this. The best way to describe them is Yngwie meets Dream Theater. The vocals leave alot to be desired unfortunatley. The song writing could be better IMO :) But for the most part these guys are worth checking out. Their album "Damnation Game" is available at Dream Disc. The only place I no where you can get their self-titled album (which I think is their newest) is in London. My friend was just recently in London on vacation and that is where he found it.

    That's all for now.

    Hi all,

first, I any of you tried to e-mail me in the past week, your mail didn't get through. The school I go to (and where I have my e-mail account) is currently moving to another location in town, and they are disconnected from the Net.

You can still reach me at : decherin@xs4all.nl

This is a friends account, just mention my name in the subject line, and he'll make sure I can read it.

As for the 'Carpe Diem' project. My CD-Writer is currently being repaired, or replaced by a new one, I don't know yet. The point is that I don't have the writer at home. I don't know how long it takes before I get my writer back, but I'll let you all know.

Again, please be patient, I don't know how long I'm gonna have to ask you this, but at this moment that's all I can do.

    Thanks,

    Marcel Berkhout decherin@xs4all.nl

ps. Olaf, I know you tried to e-mail me, e-mail me asap at the other address so we can work out a trade.

OK. Subscriptions open: I'll do bass on Erotomania. Seriously, this is something that can be done: a jam-tribute to DT! I bet here on the jam, there are enough musos to make up 10 DT line-ups. Just like Ytse-cons are organized, we could book a studio for a month or two, and get Mike Bahr to produce it -since it seems he'll have no obligations with DT at the time- and press 1000 CDs. The question is if we do USA/Europe separately or together. If we do it together, we should book a studio in the States or Canada.

Hey, this is serious. Give it a thought.

Adam, could ya please take more care in typing correctly? Takes one a long time to figure out what you're saying when breezing through a jam in less than 2 mins!

    >>>>>>>>I must say that i've pitched my tent in the camp of the #2's. To >>>>>>>>an extreme. In fact, when it comes to 20 minute plus songs, my favorite is the Erotomania/Voices/TSM trilogy from our boys in DT. I know it's not identified as one song, and they probably don't even play these songs in order live, which makes my point less than valid to some extent. <<<<<<<<

They do play them in that order live. Personally, I cannot possibly consider the trilogy as one song. Before that, I'd consider The Mirror/Lie as one. I don't think there's any materialistic explanation of what makes you think of a piece of music as one song. It's just how you feel it. It's neither a question of how songs flow into each other. You say that Eroto and Voices flow well, but apart from that 5 sec part, they're completely different. I can flow Slayer's "Angel of Death" into LSoaD if I want to. But that's not gonna make me think of the two as one song. You have to have a strong thread all through the entire song.

    >>Very plausible. It sucks we don't get more info...

never got much info from Death, did we?

I read on the jam that someone said that Cynic had broken up. I've heard this for months, and read about all of the new projects the guys in the band were doing. I've been talking to Sean Malone for the past couple months and he said he was sure that the guys were continuing without him. Anyway, today it is official. I heard from a very reliable source, very close to the band, that their self- financed 9 song album will be available by late Sept. early Oct. The bass player is Chris Kringle which they had an off and on relationship with before sean Malone joined the band.

I finally got around to watching a Fates video boot that I picked up probably over a year ago.

It has two parts: 1992 Limelight-Parallels tour 1986 Detroit-Spectre Within tour

The Limelight part is about 50 minutes and is not the best quality. There are a lot of drop outs and the sound is not too good. I rate it a C+/B-.

The Detroit part is much better quality and runs for about 60 minutes. I am hesitant about the date of this show though since they talk about their new album Spectre Within. Spectre Within came out in 1985 while Awaken the Guardian came out in 1986. I suppose the show could have been early in 1986 and then they released AWG in late 1986. That still doesn't make much sense though... This was my first time hearing Arch live and he sings very well live, maybe even better than the studio. I guess the crowd was a little mellow since John kept trying to get the crowd to head bang. Arch is a lot more talkative to the crowd than Alder. I give the quality for this part of the video a B+. I couldn't believe how great Fates sounded after only their second album. They rocked.

I know a lot of you may want a copy of this show but currently I only have access to one VCR. I will probably have another VCR in about 5-6 months.

well, i agree. but when people (100's of people) are sending you just a box full of blank tapes and nothing in return, i dont see how i should feel obligated to get to everything in such a hurry. from now on i guess i will just refuse to trade for blanks. is that better than people waiting? even if i quit my job and sat at my house 40 hours a week it would still take me weeks to get all the tapes out that people sent me. i have gotten almost caught up on these blanks trades, but i still dont feel obligated to get them out in any rush.

Uh, not to go out of my way to piss off anybody around here, but can you say... QUEENSRYCHE? If this guy is correct, then I guess they shouldn't be on stage playing in the first place. Not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing with what was said, I'm just pointing out that if you're gonna slag White Zombie for playing with a click track/sequencer/whatever, then you'd better start slagging QR too. And hey, DT rolls the intro to Metropolis so I guess they suck too.

What it really boils down to is: plenty of bands lay down stuff in the studio which would be impossible to reproduce verbatim in the live setting without additional musicians. Some of those bands insist on performing the songs on their album note-for-note, sound-for-sound, exactly the way they were recorded & mixed. Why do they do this? I don't know.

But if you're playing something which requires, for example, keyboard & percussion parts, and there ain't no keyboard player or percussionist in the band, then you have no choice but to a) hire additional musicians to go on tour with you, b) *GASP* play the songs a little DIFFERENTLY than they appear on the album, or c) perform along with a sequencer, in other words, have some of the parts pre-recorded.

Watch Operation:Livecrime and you'll certainly discover that this little charade is a pretty neat trick. Oh, the wonders of modern technology! Four guys can play an entire heavily-produced rock opera from beginning to end and it sounds EXACTLY like it does on the CD! Incredible! Queensryche rules, man! They pulled it off without a hitch and fooled everyone!

But technology being technology, sometimes things get screwed up, which, unfortunately for White Zombie, is what happened to White Zombie. Big deal. They should hire a keyboard player to play their samples, then they wouldn't have these problems. More human than human?

I could rant and rave about this shit all day, but I'd only piss everyone off. In my OPINION(tm), I don't care if it's Queensryche or White Zombie or Rush or Paula fucking Abdul, DITCH THE SEQUENCERS! Either hire extra musicians to fill out your sound, or take the time to arrange your songs so they will sound good live without additional help.

    I need a cigarette. Later,

    Jeff

P.S. - If anyone here digs pop-punk (yeah, I know, Green Day sucks, thanks for reminding me) you should really check out PAJAMAZON's web site at http://www.albany.net/~pajamaz. Hey everybody-

I need some help. I was walking around yesterday and I saw a sign for this concert that's gonna happen on my college's campus. Here's the lineup:

French TV - from Louisville, KY Volare - from Athens, GA The Mathematicians - from Indianapolis, IN Quarkspace - from Columbus, OH Ut Gret - from Santa Cruz, CA Boud Deun - from Warrentown, VA

Now, I don't even know what kind of concert this is gonna be, Alternative, Rock, whatever, but I've heard of Boud Deun here on the jam. So, if you've heard of ANY of these bands, PLEASE drop me a line and give me the dirt on them.

Also, if anybody likes any of these bands and wants to take a road trip to Louisville, KY that would be way cool. The concert's on Saturday, July 27th from noon to midnight. It costs $15. If you want more info just contact me.

    Thanks a bunch,

Actually, it was probably somebody from Compu$erve doing the typing. On most of those things, the person/band sits in a room with one person to read the questions to them, and another to type in their reponses. Just knowing how computer "illiterate" the guys in DT are, their typing is probably as bad as mine. (This reply took over 15 minutes :))
