In no particular order:
1) As I mentioned in a previous post here, I'm originally from Long Beach,
California, and was very much a part of the "scene" there. They were light
years away from my band musically (I'm tempted to say "not as good," but
I'll leave that out of the conversation for the moment), but Sublime is the
only band that grew out of the same OC/LA scene that I played in for years
that really got very far (Unles you count Youth Brigade, Middle Earth, Zen,
or The Lost Souls) commercially. Brad Newell's OD, then, was a pretty
bitter pill for a lot of us to swallow. I'm not there, anymore, and have
only spoken about it from a few people, but the general concensus seems to
be something along the lines of "He knew the risks going in," which you
could certainly say about a lot of more notable people whose
extra-curricular activities placed them in mortal danger... Jaco, Charlie
Parker, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, et. al. A lot of us know
that scene, even if we aren't participants. The bottom line -- drugs are
the hamartia of rock n' roll (and jazz and blues and bouzouki music).
2) Seeing Ray Alder live, I couldn't have been more impressed. It was like
watching someone with a 454 engine with the hemi....most of the time, you
just have this amazing tool and power and every once in a while, it's a
blast to step on the gas. I LOVE listening to that guy sing. Arch is good,
but not THAT good. Not in my opinion, anyhow.
3) I reject the notion that "The Real Thing" was just a ploy to get Faith
No More into the mainstream. You don't release and album like THAT -- not
then -- expecting to receive commercial acceptance. It was too radical an
album....not radical on the same order of Mr. Bungle, but a natural step
from "Introduce Yourself" and "We Care A Lot." Incidentally, Mike Bordin's
a hell of a drummer....

As far as I've been told, Winter Rose's material was never widely
released... small independent prints are about all there is. It's unknown
at this point if any bootleg or legitimate/import re-releases exist.
Critical Mass is out and it's shipping, and it's AWESOME! But
I'll leave that to the reviewers to decide. If you're local to me, come
an' get it (except some of you I've already mailed it to). That means you
Nate, and Hui-Chi, and Mark & Brian, Steve, and Mike.
I've packed up through the entire release stack up to current
(which is like number 190 or so). I've already mailed all domestic orders
up to number 110. (put the last bunch o'those out today). I'll be mailing
international orders through 110 tomorrow, then more domestic as the week
continues on, then finally more international.
Antiquities has reached the 30-copy warning. If you don't have it
yet, I don't have to explain what can happen... :) WDATU and Scenes are
both available and shipping, and quantities are steadily draining away.
Tori Amos orders opened strong reservation-wise (I have 200+ reservations
already!!) but people are lazy sending in the orders, so send now and get
a low number if you want it!!

Now that I think about it, symphonic was a very interesting
term to use, and it hits the nail right on the head in many ways. The
album does explore a wide range of sound textures though. Mid life
Crisis is actually a very good song. I love the vocal style he uses on
that track. It has the "lick me!" attitude in the delivery which
helped to make Epic such a big hit.
But I have to draw the line at Midnight Cowboy! That song was
bad in 1969, and it was no better when they did it. :)

I haven't heard any of Jan's stuff since Focus. What does it
sound like and what can you recommend?
>5. Closer To Our Heart: Rush
Is this some sort of best of package or is it a boot? I have
never heard of this title and I am a B I G Rush fan.
Speaking of Rush, I recently found out that the Spirit of St.
Louis/La Villa Strangiato bootleg (1980 Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis) IS
available as a legitimate release from Anthem records. The catalogue
number is SPE 003. It was meant to go only to radio stations, but some
copies of the vinyl were stolen and used to make the boots.
I don't suppose any of you happen to have a copy of this show
on CD that you would be willing to sell. I know selling is a dirty
word with respect to boots, but I DESPERATELY want a copy of this show
on CD. I can't find it anywhere. If any of you can help me with this,
PLEASE post it here or e-mail me. I would be ETERNALLY grateful!!

Really! I was thinking a sort of underground band like DT might end up on
that program. It's called love it or shove it btw. Do you remember what the
callers comments were? I'd be VERY curious to hear what the opinions of
everyday WAAF listeners would be of DT. A 50/50 split actually sounds pretty
good though. I remember Queensryche's "Someone Else?" got trashed on that
program.

Another thing I wanted to ask...
Is ANYBODY out there in YTSEJAMMER LAND going to the Summer Guitar Sessions

You know Jon -- it seems as if most music fans are as ignorant as you are
cynical -- that is, if you're very, very cynical. With regards to your
point that you're schocked at how supreised people are when music stars
OD. You see, I think it has a lot to do with the image of the band and
what not. And I think that "guitar god" image also plays a role.
You see, when Hendrix ODed (if he did -- there's still debate :) ) I
don't think that came as a shock to so many people. I mean, he wrote
half (that's being generous) of his songs while he was stoned. But the
Pumpkins -- they never had that image, and I think that's why there's
such a shock now over the keyboardist's death. Furthermore, the incident
happened in New York, which offers the potential of tremendous
miscoverage of the event -- hence, the shock. I'm probably wrong on
that, but it's just a thought.
Unfortunately, however, you're write about drugs always being a part of
the music industry. I have to hand it to you -- that's not cynicism --
that's fact but I think it's also important to note that drugs were more
prevalent in a time when their effects weren't as well understood.
My point about most professional and sucessful muscians not doing drugs
was actually presented to be in a conversation with one of DT's members,
so I would worry about them and drugs -- they're extremely against them,
but this member of DT also many it clear that virtualy any record company
would cancel a deal if one of the members of a band was on drugs.
For what it's worth....

I am not taking sides in this, BUT, Brian has a valid point. Until I read
that, I didn't think he did do "for-blanks." He is perfectly within his
right to refuse "for-blanks" trades, considering he's got a lot more to gain
from "real" trades, and actually very little to gain from "for-blanks" trades...

I agree here. After 2 weeks, and no effort to explain is made, then I'd get
a little worried. If an explanation for delay is made, then it's okay to go
past the 2-week grace period. A lot of people on this list are college
students - there are MANY legit reasons for a trade to go unfinished for 2
weeks or more.

I would venture to guess that drug-use is pretty even across the board in
our population. Musicians are in the limelight and favorite targets - hence
the drug use is highlighted, and even cited in a stereotypical way. People
are sometimes shocked to find out that I don't drink to excess, smoke pot
all day, etc... BTW, yeah, I'm a musician.

THEMSELVES commited a mortal sin! I'm sure it was just a typo, but STILL... well here's
the excerpt (DT is L.T. [SYSOP]). Judge for yourselves. :)
L.T. [SYSOP] | we were called MAGESTY

| we found out the trade mark was held by

As you can tell, somebody asked them about their previous name. Jeez, they managed to

So, I'm volunteering to set up the Ytse Birthday Server. Actually, it won't be much of a server, since I'll probably wind up doing everything by hand, but that's cool. :)
What I'll do is post reminders to the Jam every 1st and 15th of the month, and I'll set up a web page off my DT page to list all the birthdays. So, if you want links and stuff, mail me your full name, IRC nick (if there is one), home page url (if there is one), and, naturally, your birthday. (You may include/exclude the year of birth at your choice.) Then, everyone here will know that it's your birthday! Cool?

Well, the soundtrack of "Clockwork" is not the centerpiece of the film, other than the importance of classical music to young Alex. I can't really relate to Alex, but, in some ways, I can feel for "Pink"...

Yep, Jack does stand corrected, because I have my ticket stub from the June 30th show. And YES, I DID see the show, and YES they DID play an AC/DC tune at soundcheck. They DID do only ONE Damn Yankees song in the acoustic set, then played another AFTER the acoustic set. I DO know that just because they do play a song during soundcheck, it doesn't mean it will be played during the show...I don't think I said it did, DID I?
