i sent this guy an email with the correct info for subscribing. i also
asked him if he could recall the URL of the page that he found the link
that he used. as someone once said, there's a page out there that has a
link to ytsejam@ax.com that shouldn't be there. you can just do like i did
on my page and just type out the instructions.

anyway, this guy hasn't responded yet, but i kinda hope he does. maybe
we'll be able to end the mystery.

maybe i'm missing something, but how could Magna Carta record and release a
tribute album that rips off Rush? Magna Carta is a legitimate record
company and it seems to me that they would be shut down with a huge
copyright infringement suit if they did so. my understanding of copyright
law is that anyone can cover a song on an album if they obtain a mechanical
license and negotiate royalties with the legal copyright holders. does
Rush own the copyrights to their work, or does the record company? perhaps
if Rush didn't hold the copyrights, negotiations would have bypassed them,
but i don't know. this would explain why the band hadn't heard about the
album. but i'm no law expert. if anyone has a good understanding of
copyright law, fill me in, would ya? :)

i really hope the Tribute is released, 'cause i'm dying to hear The Boys
playin some Rush tracks on a studio release.

Let's see, there's some dtc in this one. I guess.

Description of guitar solos. Like what kind of face goes with which DT
solo. U know, for us air guitarists.

    Title: Pull me under
Desc: "Since when does your mouth play a wah-wah? solo."
How-To: While air guitaring, open your mouth and mimick the sound a
baby crying. Be sure to rock at least one foot.

    Title: Another Day
Desc: "I've got anguish and pain solo."
How-To: Close you eyes and distort your face such that u
seem to be in lots of pain. And bend those bends.

    Title: Take the time
    Desc: (Keyboard + guitar solo)
How-To: While u pretend fingering guitar frets move your other
finger as if you're playing a keyboard.
Desc: (Fade out guitar solo) "Whammy sally solo"
How-To: After every note shake your picking hand as if you're urm,
heh. Then, Brush both hands up and down as if you're trying to brush
    something off the fret board

    Title: Under a Glass Moon
Desc: "Drop your jaw, open your eyes wide, drool, and stare in awe
solo" How-To: Wriggle your fingers real quick.

    The end.

    >> As for Portnoy, well he really doesn't impress me much.

    >ha! hahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAA!!! Sorry Ernie, but I never suspected
    >you of being a complete fucking moron until now. I know the name calling is

on second thought however you may understand that he might as well be
right. partly, that is, but still right.

you know, there definitely are many guitarists that can outdo
petrucci. petrucci considers steve vai and al dimeola (for example)
his idols or something, but having interviewed vai, i must tell that
even that guy feels as if he's not worth to hold a candle to many
    guitarists out there.

i can't really compare myung to anybody since i know less than
nothing about good bass players (aside from claypool, cliff burton
and billy sheehan), nor do i have a high-end audio system to figure
out any complex bass lines, so i leave it all untouched.

    but...

mike portnoy's drumming is one of the finest works i've ever heard.
period. ranks with terry bozzio any day a week. i know many drummers,
some of whom could leave many well-known performers gasping for air.
i've still not heard *any* bad word about portnoy from them. vice
    versa. nobody's perfect though.

an opera singer once happened to be around when i was listening to
"awake" and she almost jumped when she heard "innocence faded". she
said james could be well off if he turned to classical music. in rock
music (in general) i haven't heard a better singer, but as mentioned
    below... (see next paragraph)

those guys are definitely so well-trained and highly educated that it
really takes an expert to work out who's better than who. at least
    it's way beyond *my* grasp.

         good day, eh...

re: VH: i heard the same thing on 104.3 in NY yesterday, 6/20
about Van Halen. however, the dj did make it clear that it was
just a rumour and cannot be either confirmed or denied. a
listener called in and said he heard this from a friend in LA. he
said Eddie fired Sammy, he called Dave and Dave was on a plane.
as to the validity of this story, we'll have wait and see.

to Mithrandir: regarding your question of which would win, a Star
Destroyer or Enterprise - D, a clarification is necessary. is the
Star Destroyer a regular one or a super Star Destroyer like
Vader's flagship? oh, and say "hi" to Elrond for me....

i've kind of been busy here at work and lost track of some of the
threads and whatnot. so i was wondering if we ever found out what
Mike's DT secret was. anybody know? also, i've seen talk of
Metropolis. is part 2 gonna be on the new album.

RUSH tribute album: they don't want it. their not done yet.
they'd rather a band acknowledge RUSH as an influence than do a
tribute ablum. tributes are for bands who aren't around anymore,
according to Alex, RUSH plans to stay around for a while. that's

If anyone is interested VH1 is showing a half hour "crossroads" show with
Tori Amos on Sunday at 11:30pm EST. It was on the other night and I was
going to record it but I thought it was starting a half hour later then
when it really did. Supposedly she is suppose to do 3 covers and one
original song. I did see her do her last song and it was "Over the Rainbow".

Did anyone catch Metallica's Rockumentary? This would make some good
    conversation but we aren't allowed...

Has anyone been following the DT and Queensryche newsgroup? I think I
spend so much time defending DT on the QR newsgroup. I dont get it. How
come DT fans have so much more class than QR (no DT) fans? Most DT fans
were QR fans before they became DT fans. I never see DT fans saying QR
sucks just QR only fans saying DT sucks. If anyone is bored you should
check out the newsgroups alt.music.dream-theater and
rec.music.artists.queensryche Someone needs to kill Mindcrimer or
MIndWHINER since every post he posts he says DT sucks...

As announced a few months ago, DREG Records is planning to release a
compilation of talented unsigned progressive bands found on the
internet. Well, we received many excellent submissions and have pared
the list down to 12 bands (at least 65 minutes of music). The
    official roster is:

    Clockwork
    Cold Front
    Happenstance
    Nature's Call
    Atlantis
    Monster Zero
    Inferno
    Psychedelic Lullabies
    Naked
    Facade
    The Age Of Reason
    tba (can't announce them yet)

There are some DT related bands, some are metal some are rock, some
are undescribable. You can find out more about the bands and songs as
    the information becomes available at:

    http://www.bigbrain.com/dreg/CompCD.html

Many thanks to all the bands who submitted material. There are so
many talented bands out there that you haven't heard of yet, many of
them right here on the YtseJam!

The release is scheduled for early fall, so keep your eyes peeled...

    Hi all ...

            Me again :)

Well, basically this is to my discretion, but I'm not going to
pull a JimmyC and get pissed about everything I don't like personally.
You are gonna get warned if you start flaming people publically,
or continuing an off-topic thread on the jam, or saying plain stupidness
which doesn't belong on the jam to begin with. Its basically something
that is going to evolve as the jam goes on to fit whatever problems
are on the jam at that time.

As for being Skadz, just learn too much about UNIX and work for an ISP
and at a big gathering of jammers mention that you would be interested
in helping Ken out with the jam :)

    > Isn't there a way to set up temporary lists to discuss off-topic threads
    > like that ?

This is kind of ridiculous because there are already newsgroups and
mailing lists out there for every topic imaginable and anything off
topic to hear is probably on topic to another list.

    > I'm willing to listen to any band that gets some bandwith on this list.

I wasn't saying that we can't discuss other bands on this list. I have
expanded my CD collection many times from recommendations from the list.
But there is a difference between recommending a band or having a discussion
about a band and what happened with the Metallica discussion.

No, but I moderate it. And there are plenty of jammers on the list older
and more mature than me, but I am the moderator and I have to keep the list
in some sort of order. And with that job comes telling people what they
can and can't do on this list. The fact that it is in an unmoderated
list doesn't mean that it has to be a big junk message every day. There is
a purpose behind this list and that's what the content should reflect.

SHould that be RMP? :) These guys were amazing at the Christmas shows and
I really hope they get a deal real fast. Someone should tell them to
go directly to Magna Carta :)

And please direct all input directly to Mith and not the whole jam.
    thankyouverymuch :)

    All from me for now....
