    Hi All,

Someone was asking me about the name of the band that Derek plays in,
the one that plays in little bars and such. And I have totally
forgotten. Something like the Ethyl Mertz Project *laugh*. Can
anyone please e-mail directly with the right name? Thanks much.

Ah, at last, genuine appreciation for the musical gods we know as Dream Theater! IMO, every member of DT is a virtuoso and TOPS in his field!

And now for something completely different . . .

Yes, and we all have suffered for it! ;^) OK. I know that we shouldn't criticize those who have trouble with spelling, but in this case the "one" is criticizing someone else's intelligence. BTW, I didn't quote the above from the Jam - actually I looked in Roget's Thesaurus for "the pot calling the kettle black" and there it was - "STREIGHT . . . orgional . . .2nd of off", etc.

Oh great, I just made another enemy. Hey KEU, I still wanna be your friend - all the above is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism! Here's one more - do yourself a favor and go buy a dictionary - seriously, everybody should have one! No sarcasm intended.

That's easy, Pat - Jealousy. QR fans are just smart enough to recognize that DT has displaced their band (in their minds) as the Kings of Prog. So they attack the NEW Kings.

As for QR, I just don't see it - they have never impressed me at all. But I won't say they suck - they write some cool songs, but hey, where's the virtuosity? ;^)

About this Sammy vs. Dave thing - I haven't heard the rumor (except HERE) but is it possible that VH is filming a "past" type of concert for the Stern movie, and has asked Dave to return ONLY for that filming? I read that Howard Stern asked David Letterman to play himself (and he DOES plan to), but Letterman refused to wear a wig that was supposed to "restore his hairline to historical accuracy". Maybe the VH brouhaha is part of this movie, too. I hope!

OK, I have something I would like to say to everyone.

I don't know what Sledge's problem is with me and to be perfectly honest with y'all I don't really care. But I can see that this could turn out to be the Mother of all Flame wars. As some of you know I'm one of the older members on the jam (34). I've been having put-down contests (or flame wars as they're called in cyberspace) since I was ten years old. I'm very good at it and can get very personal. The last thing I want to do is start a flame war; but if this guy keeps this up I'm not gonna have any other choice.

Now I know most people here would agree with me when I say the last thing anyone wants is another Mojo/Mithrandir type flame war again. So could anyone who agrees that this would be a waste of bandwidth to please email Sledge at <sledge@allinux1.alliance.net> and ask him to knock it off. I don't want any apologies or explanation from him, I just want him to stop. Maybe if enough people email him asking him to chill out maybe he'll get the message.

Thanks for your time and hopefully this'll be the last time this subject is brought up.

Actually, the way it works for cover songs is that you DON'T need the permission of the original artist to do it. You simply have to pay a nominal fee based on the length of the song and how many copies will go into print. This fee goes to the artist's publisher (which may or may not be the artist).

The royalty is surprisingly low. For example, if your band wanted to cover a song that's around 4 minutes long on your independant release of say 500 CDs, it would cost you around $90. I forget the exact numbers, you'd have to check with ASCAP or BMI, etc. But the original artist can NOT refuse you the right to re-record their material!

So Rush would not be aware of it until someone brings it to their attention (or they receive payment), and there's not much they can do about it except flex their muscles and give Magna Carta a hard time...

I went out yesterday and picked up Zakk Wylde's Book of Shadows. The whole cd is very acoustic, and has a dark sound throughout. Personally, i like the cd a hell of a lot, i listened through it probably 4 or 5 times yesterday. He does a lot of different things throughout it, i can't say its much like the Pride and Glory album but it still has that old southern kick to it :) in fact, just talkin 'bout it i think i need to listen through it again... brb ;) >I heard on the radio today that Vh is dumpping haggar for >roth for the howard stern Movie comming out in feb. anyone else hear >this? Keu, i hope youre not bullshitting here. stuff like this has been said before... like that time back in 93(?) ed got drunk down in austrailia or something and blabbed they were getting dave back. I'd still love to see Diamond Dave take another spin with the boys though, even if they just get him back for a scene in the movie. i guess if its true we'll hear more over time.

    Hi All,

I think that it's time for me to explain some things. I know some of you have been waiting for their copy of 'Carpe Diem', but I hate to say this, it's gonna take a while before my problems with the cd will be solved.

The people who have received 'Carpe Diem' will probably have noticed that the cd is not a regular one. That's right, it's a writable cd. I am using a Philips cd writer to make those cd's.

    Here's the problem:

The Orange book standard (some standard for writable cd's, like an ISO 9??? standard) says that between every audio track there should be a 2 second blank gap. With a 'normal' cd that's no problem at all, but with a LIVE cd, like 'Carpe Diem' that sucks. I know you don't want to hear a 2 second gap between every song.

So what I did was, I bought a special program that could write without the 2 second gap. BUT, for some reason I get a stupid error every once in a while resulting in a loss of the cd. I have screwed up more than 15 cd's that way ($8.50 each!!). That's when I decided to stop, and make sure the error would never occur again.

That was easier said than done. Currently the guy who wrote that program is trying to find out what's wrong, and until he finds out what the problem is, I can't write any cd's.

If there's anyone out there who also owns a cd writer, please contact me! I have heard about other programmes that can erase those 2 seconds, but I tried them and they didn't locate my cd writer 'cause I don't have the appropriate drivers. Those programmes are Corel CD Creator 2 and Gear Multimedia.

If you don't mind about a 2 second gap between the songs, e-mail me and I'll make sure your cd will be shipped as soon as possible.

For the others, I'm really sorry, but there's nothing I can do until I solve this problem. I don't want to throw away another $130+ for nothing.

I hope you can understand my problem and have enough patience to wait a little while longer.

    Take care,

    Marcel Berkhout v932407@si.hhs.nl
