In a message dated 96-06-19 15:55:07 EDT, you write:

<< All in all, it was lots of fun and great to see all the jammers.
We asked John about the Con and he definately knew about it
and said that they should be there. He said they were still
searching for a producer. He said they basically missed the
October window to get an album out and they wanted to skip
Christmas, and that the end of January or February will probably
be when the album comes out. He didn't play any of the new music
at the clinic, but mentioned Metropolis Pt ][.

That's about all I can type now, considering I was up til 4AM, but
if I think of anything else that was sorta interesting, I will
     post :)

I forgot to mention the part about the Savatage date at Jaxx being postponed.
I knew that. I just forgot. ::slapping self on wrist:: <G>

    Kevin Madden inquires:

<< Jamie, I wonder about your signature. It read "Jamie the exasperating
    Dragon"
Is that what you meant to say? You are exasperating? Or are you exasperated
because Savatage isn't coming? Just curious. >>

The adjectives I use are generally inside jokes of a sort. I said
"exasperating" because I exasperate people. Certain folks will agree with
this wholeheartedly, if not in public. ;) Though I will admit that I *am*
a wee bit put out about the 'tage date being cancelled; every other time I've
had a chance to see them, all before Criss was killed, I was underage and
couldn't get into the clubs they were playing.

Maybe I missed something over the past few jams. Does this mean that
David Prater isn't producing the new album? One could hope....

    Message-ID: <960626013812_421930817@emout14.mail.aol.com>

    Hey all,

This is my first post (after reading the last 100 or so Jams and suffering
through the whole *Load* thread). So i'd like to introduce myself to all the
other Jammers. My name's Tim Caudill, i'm a college student from Pittsburgh,
PA, my favorite bands are Dream Theater and Savatage, and i'm an amatuer
    musician/singer/songwriter.

But enuff about me. I just wanted to respond to some themes which seem to be
recurring here on the Jam recently. First of all, i have to agree with
    Grinder when he says:

DT and Rainbow on the same bill? I don't think it would work.

However, i agree for a different reason. I think it wouldn't work because DT
is an up-and-coming, progressive band who's best material is yet to come and
who's audience is increasing exponentially. Rainbow, on the other hand, is a
band who's best material is FAR behind them and are now reduced to touring
and rehashing the past, playing for aging audiences who are just reliving the
    good ol' days.

As far as these two bands touring are concerned, i don't think it would work
for this reason: DT has two choices when it come to their next tour. Either
    (1) tour as an opening act for an established band or (2) as a headliner with
another, lesser-known band opening for them. Which one they chose depends on
what it is they hope to gain from the tour. If they hope to please their
existing fans and play a longer set, then they'll do the latter.

However, if they chose the former, then chosing the band they'll open for is
of utmost importance. The only reason to choose this avenue is to expose a
wider audience to their music and hope to gain some converts. You must ask
yourself, then, what type of established and popular band would attract an
audience who would also enjoy DT. I don't think this is Rainbow. The type
of fans they'd attract are not looking for new music to listen to, they're
too busy reliving the past (for the most part, remember, this IS a
generalization...if this doesn't apply to you, then nevermind).

The only band who would be able to give DT this audience is RUSH. And if DT
has to sacrifice some stage time to accomplish this (if this is, in fact,
their goal) then it'd be well worth it. They may lose a small few fans who
wish they'd been on stage longer, but the fans Rush would pull in would
appreciate DT (if they don't already). I think it would create a whole new
audience for the boys. They may lose the battle, but i think it'd go a long
way in helping them win the war.

My point is probably moot anyways, since it ain't gonna happen...

But anyways, my other point was that there seems to be a lot of bashing on
the Jam recently by those who don't like other's listening tastes. To that i
say: i like what i like, you like what you like, but since we both like DT,
let's talk about THEM and FUCK the rest.

All of this is purely just MHO.

    Thanks for reading my words,
    Tim

    Hey Jammers,

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and am relieved to find that this is indeed the
Dream Theater list and not the Metallica bitch-box. I'm 29 years old and I finally got
my first job out of college; I was an English major in school, so it took me a while to
find something that wasn't being a teacher. Not that there is anything wrong with
teaching, but in LA the schools are pretty dangerous. So now I sit in front of a
computer and listen to DT, Rush, Metallica (even Load), Zappa, and whatever else I'm in
the mood for. Far too much about myself. . .

Does anybody notice when you listen to Dream Theater that it takes some work? Keeping up
with the time changes and the complexity of the music takes a careful ear and some
knowledge of music theory. I'm no music guru, but I can identify time signatures,
counterpoint, and profound lyrics. This is why DT is not "popular."

Green Day is "popular" simply because the vast majority of the public is LAZY! The have
been desensitized by TV and MTV to the point that their sub-literate minds cannot
comprehend anything more complex than a Green Day or Blind Melon. Sure its great music
to dance to ("it has a beat and I can dance to it Dick. I'll give it a 92"), but if you
listen to too much of it, it numbs the brain. I could get into a bunch of conspiracy
theories about how the dominant class wants to keep the public a bunch of fucking sheep,
but now that I actually have a job, I don't feel so angry anymore and don't think that
those unethical, bloodsucking politicians who don't have our best interests at heart
aren't such bad people after all.

At least I can listen to Dream Theater and read the Jam.

    Always IMO,

    Moat Builder

Hey all. Somebody a few jams back mentioned a bass
instructional video done by our good frien John Myung. Well, how and
where could I get this? I am very interested in improving my playing,
and cannot really afford formal lessons at the moment, so a good
instructional vid I guess is the next best thing (I've got the time and
desire. I( just need some sort of direction). From the sound of this
vid, it kind of intrigues me. I am VERY interested. Please help.
    Thanks, guys. You all rule.

P.S. I just saw a sort of new band (Fleming & John) the other night.
They did this really cool thing where they took the lyrics to "I Got
You, Babe," and put them to the tune of "Black Dog." They really pulled
    it off well, too.

Well anyway, it's one of the old Majesty songs. I'm not sure exactly
when they wrote it, but I really like it. In fact, it's one of my

There's a John Myung instructional video?

Is anybody of the yammers going to Bospop (Weert, the Netherlands) this
year? The following bands will be playing: Maiden, Satriani, Tyketto,
Motorhead and Aura. The most interesting act (IMO) will be Aura. They'll be
releasing a CD on the Magna Carta label in september and they sound like
Dream Theater meets Rush & and Fates Warning. I've heard the advance tape
(thanks A.!!!) and it's really sensational stuff!!!
Aura will play at 12.00 on Saturday. See you there!!!
Does anyone know whether the bill on Friday is interesting?

Of that I've made my tactique. I only post stupid childish things that make
you people mad at me. In the process, I'm making an ass out of myself, but
    at least I get noticed.

    Ha ha!

    Hi there,

I'm one of the biggest Dream Theater fans in good old Germany and would like

First of all, does anyone know how Jason Becker is doing?

Lastly, I am going to the KISS concert in Milwaukee on August 10.
Does anyone have any info on a set list? I'm going with three
friends of mine and I get to be Gene. Are there any other DT fans
out there who spent every Halloween back in the late 70's dressing up
like their favorite KISS member? Back in fourth grade we used to
have debates over whether Gene Simmons could take Darth Vader. In
my mind, there was never any question...

Has Dream Theater ever been "reviewed" on Beavis and Butthead? If they got a
good review, it could send them into platinum status (a la White Zombie).
Although, if they get panned (a la Winger) it could be a disaster.

Also, has their music appeared anywhere? Either on Soundtrack or Television?

someone asked if DT music has ever made an appearance. I was watching some
sort of diving thing on a platform that is 150 feet up and the music they
were playing was the intro to all the song on I&W. It was about 3 years
    ago.
