    John-
A tasty allegory you have written. Hey, I can understand how you
feel (for the most part), and I also understand where *we* are coming from.
But, no reason to be modest; you know what you did was very fine. AND since
I can't usually tell the musicians that I like that I did enjoy their stuff,
    Good work John.
What other music are you into these days??

    David Peterson said:
    >>Now here's my opinion about the instrumental situation...
"Moonbubbles" is the intro to TTT found on I&W.
"Barfbag" is the arpeggio, jazzy, long guitar piece after TLF on Live in
    Tokyo.
"Showdown" is the stuff _AFTER_ TLF and the first half of Barfbag.
I had been assuming that in the liner notes that Mike accidentally put
Moonbubbles instead of Barfbag. Hasn't Moonbubbles ALWAYS been the intro to
TTT? And it's the intro right? Someone said it's the outtro. Whatever.<<

David, I covered this in my last post, which Bafu had backed me up on; at any
rate, here's a brief rundown of what instrumental is called what (so take
    note):

    1) Moonbubbles is a guitar/bass (no keys or drums) piece that was played
inbetween Ytsejam and Another Day during the first part of the I&W tour (late
'92) and can be heard on the 11/??/92 Osaka show. Once you hear this track,
you'll understand why it is called Moonbubbles.

Chances are, the "intro" that you are thinking of is Puppies on Acid, which
later became the first minute and a half of The Mirror. (Puppies on Acid is
played before TTT on the LiT video).

    2) Barfbag is the jazzy instrumental that follows TLF on the last part of the
I&W tour, as can be heard on the Lost in the Sky bootleg (11/15/93). What
appears on WDATU (the last track) is in fact TLF/Barfbag - as to why Mike B
renamed it, he said he was asked to (whatever that means).

The long solo/outro/whatever-you-call-it on the LiT video that extends from
TLF has never been officially named (at least, we don't know the name).

    3) An instrumental excerpt of Showdown (which was the first new song DT had
written, but I understand did not have lyrics then) was played at the 6/9/95
and 6/13/95 shows; someone pointed out that this eventually became Raise the
Knife, which is the first post-ACOS song that the band *completed* writing.
Neil Elliott (who is the official fanzine's editor) is in contact with the
band regularly - last time he mentioned anything about the new songs written,
nothing was said of Showdown, so I'm guessing that it did in fact become Raise
    the Knife.

Just so ya know, it took me a while to figure what instrumental is called
what, so the confusion on your part is something I went through as well, as
I'm sure many others have. I hope this clears things up for you.

WARNING: This is only a dream I had and has no DT content. I thought some
jammers might like this so I'm posting it.
    --------------------------------------------------------
Well, speaking about dreams, I'd like to share a dream that I had a while
ago about Queensryche. So far, the only other jammer who I told this to
is the E-Man, and he got a kick out of it:

Well, I was on the sidewalk of New York City (or some metropolitan
place...I don't remember where) and just talking with my friends. Then
all of a sudden, Chris De Garmo comes out of nowhere on a motorcycle. It
turns out he and the rest of Queensryche were part of a mafia gang and
Chris had just ripped off somebody's wallet. So I saw him coming my way,
and I closed-lined him. He fell off his bike and then Geoff Tate looks at
me and starts running after me. He had his long hair and was wearing a
beige suit. Also, he was the head of the mafia gang. He looked really
tough. Anyway, the whole band started running after me and then I just
escaped them...and then I woke up. Yes, it's a stupid ending, but I
thought it was cool how QR was a gang. :)

Well, if you're still reading, let me know if you liked it or not. Thanks.

    Lo all ....

Lots of stuff to go through, so be afraid :)

First let me start with the jam stuff. Over the past week or
so, I have done a shitload of work on the jam, trying to fixing some
problems and get everything running smoothly. I want to say a big
THANKS to Ken for hist patience with me and help. I am getting the
hang of it quickly, but still need some assistance some times :)

As for the response@ibmmail thing, we are working on it. It
sends all fucked up, and it may be a bitch to get rid of, but
eventually we will. I swear :)

Other than that, things seem to be moving along quite nicely.

Next ..... Trey Allen is almost as godly as Bafu now. I got
my Ytsejam Sweatshirt this week and it kicks ass. If you haven't
gotten one, mail Trey!!!!!!! trust me. I've gotten compliments
left and right. I also have bragging rights to say I run the list :)
(PS - Trey... you sent me the check to say all this nice stuff,
    right??? ;)

IRC. IRC. IRC. This was a subliminal hint. Lemme just thank
everyone who keeps plugging the irc server. It's an awesome time.
Just come and hang out with all your favorite ytsejammers. Who
knows, maybe Gary from Shadow Gallery will come back a night, or
that Inferno guy will show up, maybe John Arch. YOU NEVER KNOW :)
Maybe, I will just call Kevin Moore's mom and tell her to send him
to my apartment, so he can chat a night ;) SO come visit. If you
have a problem getting on, or aren't sure of what the hell to do,
mail me. I will help. Just wanted to say a big Hi! to the whole
#ytsejam crew! Including the regulars (if I leave you out, don't
feel bad, I am half asleep and can hardly type) Here goes...
the regulars: Augie! Bafu! D-Man! E-Man! Steve-0! Pellaz! Gabbo!
YtseJim! Kurt! MoJoMoN! DreamEvil! and last, but definately not least
    Ytse-Ben! :)

OK, that's all from me for now.

Personally, I don't see Lie as just another "screwed over by some chick" song, to paraphrase a fellow jammer. While I can definitely see that aspect of it, there's much more to it. It seems that the song is focusing on the frustration resulting from that unfortunate turn of events as opposed to what actually happened; although we do get a sense of this (So you tell me trust me I can trust you/As far as I can through you & ..nothing breaks like a broken promise). Plus, there is the agonizing factor of not knowing how to best handle the situation (Your town, I'm all alone/ And I just can't stare at the phone). The only real biographical references I can see are "You tell me 'bout your two more coming/But Once is just enough for me" and "I wanna talk about lifelong mistakes/And you can tell your stepfather I said so," the latter of which completely confuses me. Let me just end by saying that there is nothing wrong with writing "screwed over by some chick" songs. If that is what you feel, then that's fine. DT should not be considered and should not consider themselevs above such expression. You've got to write about what you know. However, one can chose to focus, as I believe Kevin Moore did, on different (perhaps even less obvious) aspects of the situation. Richie

P.S. I heard a quote the other day which made me sick. This girl that I'm friends with didn't know what kind of music I normally listen to (DT, Poison, Warrant, etc). When I told her, she started laughing and said, "Those bands aren't even in the top...500," as if chart success = quality. Pissed me off. If I wasn't friends with her, heads would have rolled.

    Dear Jammers,

I think it is time to plan YtseCon III for Long Island, NY. Our best bet would be mid to late May, since everyone will be out of college by then. I know that I'll be done by early May. I'm willing to devote some of my time to head this one myself, plus maybe a little help from any other jammers nearby me. I'm dead serious about this one. I think that the earlier we plan, the better the chances to get Dream Theater there. And, since it is not anytime near a tour or anything, the chances are great. E-mail me and let me know, then I'll start making calls.

    Yours, Jeff =)

    Hey all,

I just thought since I've been lurking for so long it was time for a post... Something that has really caught my attention lately is this stuff about musical complexity. You know, "KM and Derek can't play lizst" or whatever. Another response was something along the lines of, "I'm not going to shit on anyone who got into berklee!" First of all, Berklee isn't some school where you have to have godlike musical skills to get into. I live near Boston, and know several people who went there. My guitar teacher went there. He's been teaching in Boston for about 20 years now, and has racked up quite a list of students, including (no shit here) Steve Vai, Gary Hoey, and John Petrucci. To make a long story short, Berklee is not that hard to get into. I know people who went there barely being able to read music. It's really expensive these days too, up around 25 grand. There are some good instructors there, and some bad ones. Not to rag on the DT boys however, they obviously got some good instructors.

BTW, anybody who has some extra cash should definitely pick up "Dream Theater INSTRUmental". There's a JP guitar solo on the end and it's amazing how much he sounds like his influences. His style hadn't really come up yet, so it's like one part Steve Vai, one part Alex Lifeson, etc. Check it out!

Hi all! I have a request. I'm going away for a week, and even though I love reading the jams, if I come back and find 30 of the damn things I'm going to track you all down and throw up all over your keyboards...so can we please try to keep the jams to 2 a day? And don't suggest that I just not read them, I tried that.....couldn't do it! About a month ago someone posted about hoping JP wouldn't deviate from the recordings when playing live. I've thought about that and really hope the person was kidding. I have enormous respect for DT's musical ability and creativity and feel strongly that they ought to be able to expand and add new stuff to any song they want to. I haven't been able to see DT live but I got the Birch Hill tapes and was amazed by some of the added solo's that they did. These guys are too good and too creative to play note for note off the recordings and why would they want to? Granted that their music is pretty complex and well structured, which somewhat limits the improvisation, if they feel like going out on a limb and trying something new I say more power to them!

    See you in a week,

    Tim TW

Some various ramblings in an attempt to bridge the boredom between band activities ........

    1) Dream Theater [drink, you alchoholics] should be given more thanks than they have been for playing the four shows over the holidays. When it is all said and done, they probably had to be lucky to break even.

1a) Am I the only one who would like to see the fire code regulations for the El-N-Gee ?? Talk about a tragedy in the making there. They should have played the Strand in Providence instead.

    2) While it is easy to say things like "I would rather hear Learning to Live than any cover on the planet", isn't it cool that they do things a bit differently ??

    3) Wouldn't it be great if they played Metropolis at every show ?? The first time I saw them, they opened with it and it really blew me away.

    4) Speaking of Metropolis, what has happened to Metropolis Watch (Ms. Dragon, are you out there ??).

    5) Am I old or what. I *still* call 'em albums.

    6) On the being old subject, it is rather humorous how some of the young 'upstarts' on the list are "discovering" bands like early Genesis. Dont overlook Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering just because Gabriel had left by then.

    7) I am dying for an updated view of the world from Warren of Oregon. Whasssssup over thar on said left coast ?? Did you escape the flooding OK ??

    8) How about bringing Superior over here to open for DT's next tour. That ALBUM gets better with each listen.

    9) If anyone knows how to get a copy of anything by a band called "Jadis", please let me know. Heard one song from them and it sounded pretty decent.

As for the recording thing, how many of you have actually RECORDED bands? Not BEEN recorded in your bands, but actually sat behind the mixing console and tracked a band? If you haven't, how do you know your tribute thing will work? Enough said.

Trying to catch up on some 'jams and came across something about people only being able to play classical or jazz but not both. I did it too :). I played double bass for years and played jazz and classical. Of course it can be done. It's silly to think that one is only able to play in a single style. I will admit that I do not know of any big-name-successful musicians who are known for and make a living playing more than one style however. Richard Davis is a jazz double bassist but he's known for his classical abilities too. Still, he's considered a jazz player and that is his primary genre (is genre the right word?).

    Who's John Arch?

    > Deb "The Doublebass Goddess and Aspiring Recording Engineer" > Seeger

Nice to see that the gods play bass :). Good luck as an engineer Deb.

    > she said....and I QUOTE "Hell, I'm not going to shit on > ANYONE who got into Berkelee!"

I was going to say something here but I'll just say that I wouldn't shit on anyone for any reason (but maybe she meant that figuratively) :)

    > All in all, there are alot of people on this list...and not > everybody's going to agree on everything.

I really disagree with that statement. I think everyone can agree on lots of things.
