Okay, now I love DT probably just as much as the next person, but you people
who have dreams about them, man, you guys are fucked up. :) I have dreams
about all kinds of stuff (duh, I guess that was a pretty stupid thing to
say), but haven't had any about DT or DT shows, and for some reason I really
can't see myself ever having a dream about DT. Now, a dream about me
playing my own music in some large club or something, sure, but about being
at a DT show ... that's just too weird ... maybe it's just because I listen
to DT for the music mainly, and don't like sit there worshiping their
musicianship (I acknowledge it though, just I don't idolize them the same
way I idolize someone like, say, Mario Lemieux, who's been my favourite
hockey player ever since he was a rookie when I was about 8 years old).

Oh well, I just thought it was weird that several people here have had
dreams about DT and couldn't help mentioning it...

This is not directed at anybody, it's just a wierd analogy to be interperated any way you like, or to be dismissed.

Ahhh. we sit at the great banquet table again for another ytse-feast, some already seated with knife in hand, hungry and ready to devour. The table is beginning to fill up with a wide culture of contributions to digest as each enters the room with somthing from the hunt. Some flock to their usual seats aside familiar faces, others reluctantly pull up a chair and cordially extend themselves to a stranger and begin to discuss todays menu. The low rumblings of voices begins to crescend as the room is now full of conversation and interaction. One end of the table flares into a heated debate , but is soon under control because these seasoned hunters display a little high spiritous now and then, but they know the unspoken rules of the room and gather their bruised ego's and sit to dine. Though my pallet has grown tired of some of the leftovers some bring to the table, I take a little out of respect and move on to something more creative. A few heads turn towards the doorway as another enters the room with his offering. Someone moves aside and offers him their seat, but he ingnors the gesture and goes to the head of the table and throws upon it his offering.... the remains of a dead raven.. some of the room quickly empties out discusted and bewildered, others are laughing it off and resume eating. I with my weak stomach turn in the doorway on my out to see that the offender had sat to make himself comfortable and he begins to gorge himself like he hadn't eaten in days. The only thing I cant figure out is that of all that was on that table.... he ate crow. Unrelated: Thanks to everyone for their inquiries and or constructive criticism. Like I told Mike Bahr a few weeks ago I am here as a fan of DT and it is a great way to up to date on them and related topics. The last thing I want is any attention , I will probably have to unsubscribe for a while because of a busy schedule and at the rate these jams are comming in this computor will go into meltdown unattended. I can't answer everyone's questions privately, so before I sign off, I'll do a quick up date, though it's nothing earth shattering. Feel free to E-me With any updates or Questions , I'll do my best to get back. John Arch

    Hello,

I have a DT boot I would like to trade. It's called Dream Out Loud and it was recorded in Buffalo, NY (the Impaxx Club) 5/18/93. The tracks are: Metropolis, Under A Glass Moon, Get Funky/Status Seeker*, Wait For Sleep, Surrounded, To Live Forever (inc. Drum Solo), Another Day, Pull Me Under, Learning to Live. Total Time is 76:11. I don't have any specific idea on what I'm looking for, so if there's anyone out there who has anything to offer, please email me.

Jammer: Just wanted to mention that I picked up a couple of progressive CD's today: Sieges Even and Ivanhoe. I haven't had the chance to really listen to Ivanhoe yet, although I did sample a couple of songs in the store and they sounded great. As far as Sieges Even goes, they sound very Watchtowerish, and are extremely good musicians. I will warn you though and say that they aren't for everyone. If you can imagine an album's worth of intense material as complex as the heart of Metropolis, then you will get my drift. The production isn't as good as anything Dream Theater would do, but boy is the technical complexity there!...Actually, they remind me of a cross between Watchtower and Fates Warning(No Exit and P.S days)... Alot of people might think I'm crazy for liking this band, since some people would probably get dizzy over it, but I really love it. The C.D. is called "Steps". I also got "LifeCycle" by the same band and that one is REALLY heavy!..... I just wonder why I never heard of this German band before.... DAMIEN

    Hey all,

Regarding Charlie, I think he is as good as James (what's up with his weak performances.. go out and buy their video for a good example).. Although I love all of DTs stuff, I have found myself listening to WDADU much more than I have been listening to their post-Dominici work. I must say, out of all DT's work, I think "The Killing Hand" is their best song..

About the songs on "Awake".. I don't really care for most of Awake at all.. I like it, but I rarely play more than two or three songs from the album.. If you disregard ACOS, I hope their future albums will be more like WDADU or I&W... Any new information on their upcoming album (7/96)?

Also - can someone tell me the current whereabouts and history of C.D.??

    Deb Seeger's said the following...

    * Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian CAN'T play Liszt.

    * The DT tribute project would be IMPOSSIBLE.

    * "The bass play should lay HIS track down first" is a wrong statement.

Deb, all three of these statements are your opinions and I disagree with all 3 of them.

    * You have _NO_ clue as to whether or not Kev and Derek can or can't play anything, so don't even go there.

    * The DT tribute is being done because it's fun. If you don't think so, don't piss on us who think it is.

    * His, as said before, is a contemporary form of possession describing both sexes. Look it up.

Sorry if this seems overly like a personal attack, Deb, but you have this habit of saying things on the 'jam that are your opinion, which is fine, but you say it in a way that makes it sound like it's _FACT_. Stick a IMHO in there sometimes and anal people like me won't get all worked up.

Now here's my opinion about the instrumental situation...

"Moonbubbles" is the intro to TTT found on I&W.

"Barfbag" is the arpeggio, jazzy, long guitar piece after TLF on Live in Tokyo.

"Showdown" is the stuff _AFTER_ TLF and the first half of Barfbag. So track #9 of WDATU is as follows:

    0:00 - 4:58 = To Live Forever 4:58 - 6:23 = First half of Barfbag 6:23 - 12:07 = Showdown

On the back of the CD, it says To Live Forever/Showdown. Basically the ONLY time you hear Barfbag is when it's at the end of TLF, so why even mention it.

I had been assuming that in the liner notes that Mike accidentally put Moonbubbles instead of Barfbag. Hasn't Moonbubbles ALWAYS been the intro to TTT? And it's the intro right? Someone said it's the outtro. Whatever.

    That's enought now. Peace all!

As you can see from the subject...I am a ytse-rookie. This is only my second post. I have several questions that I hope that a gracious ytse-veteran(s) will answer. Well, first of all I got into DT when I heard CiaW and Lie on the radio (yes these songs did get radio exposure, and in NYC no less). So I brought Awake, and I love it...but the songs that blew me away aren't the same ones that seem to have blown you away. (i.e. CiaW, The Mirror, Lie, Space-dye Vest) I don't know I just find that interesting. I also have ACOS and I like it but this new guy Derek is really wild on the keyboards! Do you guys recommend Images and Words? Do you think that I will like it considering the songs that I like off of Awake? Also why is this called the "ytsejam"? And why does DT say that ACOS was possible due to the ytsejammers? I also find it interesting the other bands that you ytsejammers like (i.e. Rush, Extreme, Yes) but you seem to despise bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. (This I find hard to understand) One last point (for now!) there is one DT member that seems to have gone neglected by the Jam. I am referring to Myung. With his and Portnoy's VERY STRONG foundation, it makes Petrucci's work a whole lot easier. Speaking of Petrucci, didn't he win an award like 1 1/2 years ago that put him 3rd place behind Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammett (Maybe Guitar Player) ? Sorry so many questions!

DR. TEETH WROTE: >>Deb Seeger's said the following...

    >>* Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian CAN'T play Liszt.

    WHAT?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

SHEESH....Dr. Teeth, please READ Debbie Seeger's posts....notice the little ">>" thingy's that signify a quote from another person's post! In regards to the classical thread, she said....and I QUOTE "Hell, I'm not going to shit on ANYONE who got into Berkelee!" Now....might you be confusing her with...me? Although, I never said that either...I don't know whether they could. Honestly, I don't. More importantly, I doubt if they would want to invest the time in it. I'm sure that if they were willing to invest the time in practice that they could do it...but I think that they have more important things to do than practice Liszt...things like working on new albums and demos and such. Furthermore, I really don't think that they have anything to prove, to anybody. Regarding opinions on the jam....IMHO anything a person writes is likely to just be their opinion. As far as her other comments are concerned, all you have to do is prove her wrong. I'm sure that if you got the Ytse Big Band thing together....she would probably be the first to congratulate you. All in all, there are alot of people on this list...and not everybody's going to agree on everything. Because of this...the Ytsejam has got to be one of the best lists out there. I look forward to reading it...unlike some others I've tried. Whenever I really get bent out of shape about a post...such as the GADEM one....I read it several times to make sure I've got my facts strait before I blow up on the Jam. I don't like getting scorched...and I don't enjoy flaming people either. IMHO, I've noticed that alot of people have been spitting alot of flames lately over misquoted or misunderstood posts. I just thought that I would point this out. Please, read this in the spirit in whic h it was written...I'm not mad at anybody. I just saw this as an opportunity to post my observation................and IF I GET FLAMED BECAUSE SOMEBODY DIDN'T TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS ENTIRE POST (evil snicker) they will deserve what they get in return....hehehe.

Well, I bought Shadow Gallery a couple months ago because so many people on the jam recommended it. Many have described it as progressive metal, and a few have compared it to DT. I would have to disagree with those statements. I think that SG sounds more of a metal band than a progressive metal band. Most of the songs have progressive breaks ala DT. The most progressive track is 17, the one before the awesome classical piano solo. If I would not know who was playing, I'd guess it would be DT.

Overall, I think that SG is a pretty good band. I haven't listened to the album completely, but have to say that the piano parts are really good. My complaints are that the BGV's sound cheesy and that the guitarist's soloing can get a little wankish (80's style). If those parts were improved on, my opinion of the band would change from pretty good to awesome.

To the person who said that Magellan's lyrics are good, I would agree with you. I think that their lyrical style of telling history through their music is creative and original. Others have critcized the band for that. I do have to say that some of the songs can get too wordy and lack rhyme.

My gripe is that I don't like the lead singer's voice. I first bought Impending Acension and almost took it back because of this, but the keyboard melodies were so good that I decided to keep it. The first song is great and I like parts of the other songs.

I ran into their first album _Hour of Restoration_ and got it because it was out of print. I was suprised that I liked the vocals better on the first than on the second. Also, the songs are better constructed and more likable. The keyboard melodies is what makes this band stand out.

I heard some people say that there is a demo of a new song. Anybody heard it? I heard raving comments about it.

    Walter.

HI there. well i'm back from Portnoy's Sabian sponsored drum clinic here in memphis. wow, it was really cool to see him up close like that, i guess you all already know how much this man kicks ass. well he started off talking about things he's thinking while jamming with band, about how he thinks in just 2's and 3's etc. he talked about odd time signatures and the different ways to subdivide them. then he played for a bit with a drum machine. answered questions. at the end of the clinic he jammed to Erotomania (i think he had a dat tape or something without the drum tracks) anyway i know i'm keeping things short. but it kicked ass. but guess what. he did ask if anyone was with the 'jam on the internet. heh, only two of us had our hands raised. the showing was great. lots of people. i don't play drums, but so what? i learned some cool stuff.

well after the clinic i had the opportunity to talk to him a bit. i told him i was on the 'jam and he asked me to post a few words... he said that they were halfway through their next album and it "simply kicks ass". he also mentioned that he is buying a house and that he might get a computer hooked up. "Big Brother might be watching you guys soon", he said. heh.

A curious thing happened to me the other day... I was talking to a friend belonging to the opposite sex and eventually DT came up in the conversation... basically what she said was that she had never really heard their music, but that they looked like a bunch of queers...

my first reaction was to say "how dare you insult the most awesome band in the world you !@#%#@!$%#@!$#@!"... however I didn't say that for two reasons...1) she's too good of a friend to insult like that, and 2)I quickly thought of all the pictures in their CD's and I realized that they're one of the few bands (the *only* one that *I* have seen laTELY) that still pose for their pictures like everybody used to do back in the 80's in Metal Edge...I'm not saying they look like queers, but I was just wondering what you all think of that... I'm sure we all agree on the WDADU pictures, but that was still the 80's so it's acceptable...I don't know... I never really cared about that, but that conversation made me think about it... anybody else have commemts on this??
