OK well I can't believe some people are debating the technica; abilities
of this band. When you can play their stuff note for note then you can
criticise. I happen to be classicly trained on sax, and midly skilled in
everything from Tuba to guitar, I've played most every style there is
(except country thank God) and I have to tell you the one linking factor
is scales. If you know your scales you can play in the key the rest is
just rythms (sp) I can tell you just from listening two 2 or 3 songs like
acos that they know their scales so get over it they could probably play
anything you put in front of them.
second, although technicly difficult this tribute album IS possible the
first and most important thing to be organized is the recording media
that everyone has nearest access to. the breaks down to about four
catagories, first Dat and adat recorders of various track length, analog
2-24 track recorders on reel to real, home studios that record on
regular tapes ( up to 8 tracks ) and everything else. basicly someone
needs to head up each of these catagories and match the people who have
identical or similar equipment. for those of you in the everything else
cat. you're probbly out of luck as far as high quality recordings go.
however there should be enough instrumentalists in each group to at least
cover all the main instruments then everyone else who wishes to play
needs to be linked geographicly to those with equipment. Matt and I can
cover Houston, Texas metro area with a tascam porta-studio (4 track
regular tape)) and
others need to display their recording media and location simliarly. If
you don't have a recorder of some kind find someone near you. If you do
have a recorder watch other peoples post and find the people with
matching equipment. of course this is only the first in a long process
but aleast it could possibly get the ball rolling. So go find whatever
high quality recorder you can get your hands on and start practicing
we're all goig to need lots of it.

Hi everyone..there is so much being posted now that I want to
approach, but not enough time, so I'll I guess I'll just touch on one topic
and add my 2 cents. I'll keep it short and simple:
A lot of Jammers have been discussing what is "real progressive" and what's
not, and the band Extreme has come up a lot in this comparison. Actually a
few bands have been brought up.
Let me just say this, Extreme as well as many of the bands mentioned are
great musicians, and if we had all never heard the likes of Dream Theater,
we would not be as quick to say that they are not progressive. Let's take a
step backl and realize that we have been somewhat "spoiled" by the
incredible talents in DT, and also realize that this may have been a factor
in the way we see music now. I know it has for me.....but...that's what
makes DT special, and that's what will keep them special to me. I can't (nor
will I) go around expecting other bands to meet the same musical skill level
as DT just to be considered progressive. If all of a sudden a bunch of bands
came forth with the same talent as DT to define the progressive genre, then
what would have to call our "own" or "special" anymore? We need these other
bands of various "talent levels" to have some variety and some balance. If
DT never existed, we would all be sitting here saying "wow, no one can touch
Extreme" or "no one can touch Queensryche" etc...
There comes a point where we have to draw the line and stop being as
critical of other works by other musicians, and just kick back and listen,
and be thankful that there is still SOME variety out there that we can still
enjoy. If there was only one great progressive band, and everyone else was
Nirvana, we would be musically dead. We can still hold Dream Theater revered
as the greatest (in my opinion) progressive inspiration in years, but the
day we start picking apart other bands to the point where we become backseat
critics is the day that we begin to diminish the spirit and inspiration for
other musicians to keep trying their best. We need these other groups as
they are...a group of people in a room that create fantastic sound, not to
be judged or guaged against another great talent. I guess all I'm saying is
why be so critical...I see that us DT fans tend to be the pickiest of music
listeners, but sometimes we just need to know when to chill out and enjoy!
I'm sure that's one of the important things to Dream Theater themselves...
Stepping off the soapbox, still quite unsure of exactly what the fuck I meant,
Buster :)

Subject: DT on MTV?
Message-ID: <Pine.A32.3.91.960302032643.44218A-100000@moose.uvm.edu>
I don't think that DT should rely on or even expect MTV support.
The reason is simple: my favorite bands in the world, such as Poison,
Motley Crue, Warrant, and Skid Row are bands that were given MTV support
very early in their careers; obviously, these bands went on to become
very successful...for a while. Once the music scene changed in '92-'93,
these bands, which had been so reliant on MTV for spreading the word,
found themselves ignored by the powers-that-be. I'm not saying that these
bands did not have substantial followings before they got signed, because
they did. But the problem is that the public got so used to seeing these
bands on MTV all the time, that when they suddenly "disappeared" from the
airwaves, people began to write them off as has-beens. As such, their
later albums did not fare well.
What is the relevance here? Easy. DT had marginal success with
PMU (amazing, if you take into account the genre and the state of music
at the time) and the followed it up with TTT. While TTT did get aired
often, it didn't do as well as PMU. As such, the Another Day video didn't
get played. Here's my suggestion: fuck MTV. By this, I mean that a band,
especially one like DT, should not make videos a priority. Instead,
focus that time (and $) into getting the radio to play it. If the song
has enough radio behind it, MTV won't really have that much of a choice.
They'll have to play the video. As far as I'm concerned, right now it is
probably good that DT isn't getting MTV airplay (at least in the States).
I just hope they're not spending too much $ on them. Bands whose careers
are built on MTV become its slaves. True, you could argue that 3 studio
albums and one EP (two, if you count LATM) is long enough to wait for
support. But there are other mediums than MTV. The Box, Much Music in
Canada, various public access shows feature music videos. And given the
complexity and length of DT's songs, I think that they've done
remarkably well. The main thing they have going for them is that they are
slowly builing a foundation. Maybe the Rush/DT tour wouldn't be such a
bad idea. No one said that if DT toured with Rush to support their new
album that they couldn't tour on their own, headlining smaller venues.
And these seats will be filled with people who are die-hard DT fans and
people who happened to catch them opening for Rush and liked what they
heard enough to check out their show and maybe buy and album or two. That
is how it's done, piece by piece, show by show, album by album. Of course
since I am not yet a professional musician (need to finish college first)
I could be talking out of my idealistic ass.

DEBBIE! :) Hi! Just wanted to get your attention so you'd read this
response. I meant my original post to yu in a friendly way, I'm sorry if it
didn't come across that way.
Now to answer your question about "Lie" and your assumption that DT has
stooped to writing about being screwed over by a chick. This is NOT the
case, again, it comes down to really "listening" to Dream Theater's writing.
it can be very tricky and deep sometimes. I TOO had trouble understanding
the material on Awake, and LIE was so tough for me that I had my girlfreind
help me analyze it, and here is a bit of what we came up with:
LIE is not another "got screwed over by chick" song.... If you really listen
to it, it seems to be about a person who's PARENT (mom OR dad) left him or
abandonded him in some way shape or form...maybe given up for adoption or
just plain old left for no good reason. "Dont tell me ya wanted me, don't
tell me ya thought of me" get it? and the "I'll try, i swear i'll try" is
that infamous promise that so many kids have heard from deadbeat parents so
many times, to the point where they just know it's a LIE. <i.e. "i swear
I'll try to make it to your little league game this time johnny> The kid (or
now adult) was obviously very hurt and is carrying that through life with
them now.
There is much more revealed in the song, but I'm hoping you'll take a second
listen to the song now to see the rest for yourself.
DT is much deeper than "a chick screwed me over", and I am surprised that a
real DT fan would assume that they would have limited themselves to that on
a song. You really just have to listen with DT...it's not all on the surface
with them...in fact, a lot of what they right about is buried within the
subconcious of all of us and our emotions, and displays that our sometimes
"perverse" point of view on life stems from the fact that we are a product
of our environment.
I say all this to you as a friend and fellow fan Deb...we learn together:)

I hate to be pedantic but I couldn't let this one pass, me being a huge Queen fan and all.
The song Queen contributed to the film "Highlander" was from their 1986 album "A Kind Of Magic" and is called "Who Wants To Live Forever", not "To Live Forever". Both are absolutely incredible songs, however, and TLF (or should that be TeeLuff?) would have been great in "Highlander", IMO.

I can't believe someone else mentioned Blind Guardian!!!!!!!!!!
These guys are an AMAZING German, very melodic, metal band. They have great harmonized leads and some of the CLEANEST speed riffing I've ever heard (next to Iced Earth). They have 5 albums and one live album since '87 I HIGHLY suggest picking up "Tales rom the Twilight World", "Somewhere Far Beyond", and DEFINITELY get "Immaginations From the Other Side". I love them firstly for their amazing musicianship but the lyrics are SOOO cool. They are heavily influenced by J.R. Tolkien and Stephen King..cool shit!!!!! Some of their songs honestly throw you back to the Middle Ages. I think they are on Virgin Records but they would have to be imported..thats how I got 'em here in NYC Or you can call an EXCELLENT store in Indiana where I order lots of shit from. They have tons of hard to find discs. The store is called Dream Disc and their phone number is (219) 347-8080. The peoploe athere are so nice..I was talking to the guy for almost an hour on Helloween and other assorted stuff when I forgot that I was paying long distance. Anyhow, if you do call 'em up, please tell them that you heard of them through Carlo D'Angelo. But no matter what....GO OUT AND BUY BLIND GUARDIAN!!!!!!!!!!!They are too amazing to be passed up...it would be great if they would ever make it over to the States (OK..now I'm really dreaming!)
cheers, Carlo
P.S. Here my old monstrous .sig risen from the ashes. Hope Fates Warning likes it! DT played an instumental called Showdown (at least that's what Andy Keegan called it on the tape liner..) at the June 9th, 1995 Birch Hill, NJ show. It's pretty slick, I must say. As far as Barfbag and Showdown being thrown together or something, I'd have to doubt it. The two tunes have a very different sound and feel, and I don't think the union of the two would be all that great. So Showdown is now Raise the Knife? Pleasant. Later!

I noticed that these two threads re-surfaced around the same time.
Someone posted a short while back (and many jams ago, so I don't remember who) about how you tend to like a band's album the best if it's the one that got you into them. Then he later appended that statement with something like, (paraphrased), "that album, while supplanted by a new favorite, will still have a special place in your heart."
There are many old fans, and more recent fans here. While it seems that the majority of us got into DT through I&W/hearing PMU on the radio, there are those of us who bought WDADU when it came out, and even a few that heard Awake first. A few WDADUers I've met actually like Chuck D. better than James! (What are you smoking, Jay Peele?) ;) An I&Wer or an AWAKE-er will have mixed feeling about Charlie Dominicheesy, but through hardcore dedication to DT, have come to appreciate that album. (Im-ho, Cee Dee shines on Ess Ess, Oh-Mott and El Fagga)
I'm wondering how people's overall impressions of DT differ because of which album or song they got into first. While the only major stylistic leap (IMHO) they made was between WDADU and I&W, they have changed from album to album quite noticeably. I imagine an I&Wer's overall impression of DT is noticeably different than an AWAKE-er's, or WDADUer's.
Any ACOSers out there?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!

Got my WDATU in the post yesterday (#268) - it's amazing!! I love the drum sound on Get Funky, I love Status Seeker, and Ytsejam, and the whole damn lot really! Thanks to those people who put reviews of WDATU in the jam - I knew what to expect for Light Fuse and Set The Sun, and was then able to judge them musically and not on the recording quality, and I love them, too! How about the guitar sound on Status Seeker, verse 2, and on Light Fuse? Bloody brilliant!
