    Have you ever *listened* to a Dream Theater song before? Exactly what
    part of their music is not "technical and musical" enough for you?
    As far as "these skills not coming over night," they have released 4
    albums, and have been playing, writing, and touring together since they
    were 18! And I'm quite sure they didn't get together at a frat party and
    say "hey, lets go get some instuments and see if we can play." Every
    member of DT has been playing for years, and I'm sure if you gave Kevin
    or Derek a chance, they could play Listz.

            I just had a revelation. I'm only guessing here, but if it's true
    that there's song called Showdown on the new DT album, maybe the reason
    that Barfbag appears on Acoustic Dreams as "Showdown" is that it is part
    of the new song. When I talked to Mike P. at one of his clinics months
    ago, he metioned that they had Raise The Knife completed, as well as some
    other stuff "laying around." Could Barfbag be the stuff in question?
    We'll know later this year.

    Enchant, "Blueprint of the World"
            I personally love this entire disc from front to back. As for
    comparison, they are closer to a speedier Rush, maybe a little heavier, but
    no "balls and chunk" like Dream Theater. The production is very even, not
    terribly full of treble, or bass. Pretty flat, yet good sounding.
            "The Thirst" is about just that, man's thirst for things, be it
    relationships, knowledge, so on.
            "Catharsis" is about a person searching for themselves, if you get
    what I mean.
            "Oasis" is about not knowing where one is to go, and how long it
    takes to get there.
            "Acquaintance" is about that mystery of human relationships.
            "Mae Dae" in instrumental
            "At Death's Door" is about suffering over the loss of a loved one.
            "East of Eden" is about being caged and chained to change.
            "Nighttime Sky" I can't really make a plain statement about, I think
    it's different for everyone, (like the others, but this is more ambiguous).
    Maybe's one's relation to the earth, or nighttime. Good lines in this one.
            "Enchanted" is about that one woman who emits that powerful aura.
            "Open Eyes" is about the public's ignorance, people who look through
    closed eyes, like many think with closed minds.
            I guess all should decide for themselves, but this is a good disc.

    Hey jammers! When I bought my Awake CD I don't know how long ago (the day
    when it came out), there was a little paper in it with a few questions for
    some kind of poll (which songs from the album you liked the most, etc.).
    It said that if you answered the questions and returned them to the address
    on the paper, they would send you information and stuff about the band (I
    think you would be in the fan club or something). Well, I would want to
    know, what the hell happenned with that? I never got anything back, and
    I'm wondering what was the reason for that poll. Anybody know the answer
    for this? Thanks.

    P.S. It feels so cool to read stuff written by John Arch! Like the other
    guy, I thought that somebody was just fooling around with the name. Well,
    John, I would like to tell you that you did an incredible job in Fates
    Warning, especially on Awaken the Guardian. I love that album. I just
    wanted to let you know that I love your vocals. By the way, what have you
    done since then?

    This is for the guy who apparently wants to be known simply as "Steve:"

    I am both a Classical AND Jazz musician. How can you say a
    Classically-trained musician can't also be a jazz musician? I've been
    playing both styles for the last 6 years and I love it. Sure, there are
    Classically-trained musicians that couldn't read chord changes without
    notes to save their lives, but that takes A LOT of practice!

    Speaking of being a band/orchestra geek, this talk about forming a
    "Ytse-Philharmonic Orchestra" is all good, but what would be the point? We
    couldn't record or anything without people having to travel across the
    country, perhaps even world, and that wouldn't work since most of us are in
    school. I hate to say it, but all this
    "lets-all-send-a-tape-around-as-a-tribute-to-DT" talk should stop because
    it'd be impossible. Is that so hard to understand?

         I have to totally agree with John here. I too am completely sick of the
    gay/ ugly/ drug issues and I am embarrassed to even think that we would
    engage in such topics. I mean, really, in any given 10 minutes of a soap
    opera you most likely will hear something on all three of these topics.
     Continue with these threads if you must and I will continue to be
    embarrassed by them and by the fact that I know the guys from the band read
    the Jam when they can.

         John, correct me if I am wrong, but, isn't it true that you were offered
    the position of vocalist but due to personal matters had to decline? And
    isn't it also true, Mr. Arch, that your departure from Fates Warning was due
    to a similar situation? I have lived in the New Haven area of CT. all of my
    life and I also hosted a prog-metal radio show at WNHU for about 5 years. So
    I tried my best to keep up with these things. :^)

            Did I say in my post that I play classical music? NO. Did I say
    that Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian can play classical music? NO. Did I
    say that I had any talent at ALL? No.

    day? Who are you to say that KM and DS don't have special skills? Are you
    also saying that it is not physically possible to be able to play classical
    music AND jazz? Sheesh.

    Bafu, So much old stuff was nominated other than RCHP's BSSM. I don't know if many know this, but one of the nominees for best Metal performance was Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls, a song thats well over 11 years old, and Nine Inch Nails won for Happiness in Slavery, a sond thats been around for a while.     Correct me if I'm wrong...but Steve seems to say that it's silly to think a classical musician CAN'T do both, although it might take more than one week to do. Do I detect mid-terms in the near future, perhaps?     On a completely unrelated note, I bought Fates Warning's Inside Out a couple weeks ago, and picked up their Night On Brocken today. Man, it's like two different bands. I love Inside Out. If I ever really dig Brocken, though, it probably won't be for a while. Anyone else think that that old FW sounds like a bunch of Judas Priest wanna-bes?

    Today's amusing sight in the streets of Burlington, VT: I saw a Range Rover parked downtown today. Someone (presumably the owner) had a bit of fun with some black paint. He or she altered the "RANGE ROVER" emblazoned across the front so that it now reads "HANG OVER." I got a kick out of it.

    Well, in the past week, I received my copies of Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams, and I have to tell you, Mike, they are excellent! Although the quality on some of the Subcon. material isn't up to par as most of the AD material, it's still nice to here ACOS in it's original format. (I've never heard it before the EP came out.) As for Acoustic Dreams, the quality is excellent!

    Since I'm on the topic of bootlegs, I'm sure you Ytse-jammers can help me out. What is the best bootleg I can get for the Images & Tour Tour? I've heard that the 2 CD Dance of Eternity boot from Why Not? in Italy is really good. Are there any other bootlegs that are worth getting? I already have Wake Up! from the Awake tour.

    Lastly, I want to ask a question concerning the Majesty demos and the Instrumentals CDs. Where is the best place to pick these up? Or better yet, do any of you have copies of these 3 CDs that you can spare? I think after getting those, my rare DT recording collection will be pretty much complete.

    I hope this doesn't already sound dated, but with the amount of jams being generated, if you don't post every half-hour you run the risk of sounding three days blind. On the subject of "mainstream": No one goes mainstream. What tends to happen is that the collective taste of the "mainstream" gravitates to a form of music. Take the label "alternative". I remember when this was applied to bands like Depeche Mode, at one time. Now it's Pearl Jam, and whatnot. In two years? Some guy who can FART a melody? Labels need to be dropped, because even among people of similar taste, there will be disagreements as to who belongs. Now, as far as Dream Theater becoming "popular", there is one and only one thing that will accomplish this in the current state of music. Heavy rotation on MTV. MTV has ruined the state of music. MTV starts trends now. Take the uprise of the "New Jersey" scene a few years back. Every other video was by Cinderfella, Britny Cocks, etc. Any heard of these bands lately? MTV moved on and since MTV now dictates what is "cool, trendy, hip", follow-up albums don't sell squat compared to the previous album, label drops band, band fade into obscurity. Dream Theater needs no part of MTV. Or, they could go the route of Mettalica. Here is a band that is coming very close to projecting the appearance of actually catering to the "mainstream". Don't get me wrong. I've followed the band since a demo tape in late '83, and the Black album was great. But I have grown to fear the live shows, and I hope the attitude display in the live show doesn't find it's way into the songwriting process. Trying to write a song with the primary purpose of selling X number of albums should be a mortal sim. I will follow Dream Theater to the end of the earth, as long as the music still comes from the heart instead of the pocketbook.

    Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
