         Hi everyone!
         
         I'm coming out of lurk mode for my first post here, so bear with me.
         
         Someone (forgive me, I don't remember whom) mentioned that they liked
         IAW, and didn't like Awake as much, to which Ben "however you
         pronounce it" replied, "I bet you wouldn't feel the same if you had
         heard Awake before I&W. Nine times out of ten, people will like
         better what the heard first. You kind of get used to it." In a way,
         I agree. The first DT song I heard was PMU of course, and the rest of
         IAW eventually grew on me. It took a few listens to really get into
         Awake (although I loved CIaW from the first listen), but the more I
         listened to it, the more I really got into it, and now it rarely
         leaves my CD player. ACoS took a couple listens, and I'm sure the
         next one will as well.
         
         Oh, and about the tribute "thingie"... I suppose there are already
         about a bazillion guitarists on the list? Make it a bazillion and
         one...

            Since there seem to be a lot of orchestral instrumentalists on the
    jam, I thought that I could try doing an arrangement of a DT song for wind
    ensemble or something like that. I don't know how a recording would work
    out though... But you would have something to read.
            I know I have transcriptions for PMU, TTT, Lie, and CiaW. Any
    other suggestions would be great. I have done some arranging before, so
    I know what I'm doing (more or less). I have no guess as to a time frame
    for this. It all depends on my school schedule.
            This is a spur of the moment idea, so nothing's set in stone.
    Anyone interested or anyone with ideas should email me directly.

    Dear jammers-

    as i previously posted, my record label, DREG Records, is planning on releasing
    a compilation CD of unsigned or local Prog HR/HM bands showcasing
    their Original music.

    i've gotten a few responses from interested bands already, so i will post this
    additional information:

    1. you can submit any number of songs you want, but if it's more than
    3, be sure to note your 3 preferences in order. in all likelyhood, only one song per
    band will be used.

    2. for evaluation, you can send any format (except vinyl...). for the
    final product, i will need (in order of preference) either CD-R, DAT
    or VERY high quality tape. final submissions must be "releasable
    quality" which can range from hi quality home recordings to studio masters.

    3. there's no set limit on time lengths, but the idea is to get as
    many bands involved in this as possible, so don't screw yourself by
    only submitting a twenty minute song.

    4. there will be a yet-to-be-determined royalty based on units sold

    5. if you or your band would be interested, send me email to:

    i'll let you know where and when to send submissions.

    this will be an excellent way for you to promote your band and
    the Ytse Jam at the same time.

    Hey Guys!

            I'm listening to Extreme's 3 Sides to Every Story right now and I
    must say, it's bringing back great memories...IMHO, this album is so much
    more creative and diverse than a lot of what's out there today. In response
    to the thread I saw a couple weeks back on the jam, I'd have to say that
    Exteme IS progressive like DT, just more laid-back in their approach. They
    write some really great melodies. I'd love to hear James sing some of these
    songs. Just thought I'd share this with you all.
            Also, once again, if anyone has a spare copy of the original
    Subconcious, drop me a line personally, ok? Later guys!

    Ya know, although it would be cool to do a rendition of a DT song with
    a big band, jazz band, or pep band, I don't think it's possible with
    everyone living in different parts of the country.  Although recording
    separate tracks for guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard would work just fine,
    I just can't see how a sax, a trumpet, a trombone, and my clarinet could
    all be recorded separately and sound like anything but crap.  Instruments
    like that need to be recorded as a whole performance; I know I, for one,
    was always amazed at how much better I sounded when I was playing along
    with the rest of the symphonic band compared to when I was practicing
    alone.
    

    Of course, if people still want to try this, then I'll give it a shot. But in order for this to happen, I think the following needs to take place:

    * Someone needs to arrange the parts. This is no small task, especially when you consider we don't have an original score to go from (other than a guitar tab, which I don't think counts). I know _I_ couldn't do it. * Someone needs to donate some recording equipment. I wouldn't be surprised if the other people that have instruments like trumpets and trombones were only half-jokingly mentioning their instruments like I was, and in fact have no way of doing decent recordings (again, like me). The only solution I could think of would be for someone to risk their DAT recorder or some other portable recording device of decent quality, and circulate it along with the tape(s). I'm confident we of the ytsejam would make sure it got circulated back to its owner, but you never know (of course if I'm alone in not having a means of recording, then just exclude me =).

    Personally, the thought of doing a different kind of rendition like this of a DT song has made me excited about a different, and much more plausible possibility: writing a complete DT song in MIDI format, using different styles than DT. For example, I think Caught in a Web would sound really cool as an orchestral piece; imagine all of the low 7-string guitar parts played by basses, cellos, trombones, and other low-register instruments, all being played with a driving intensity. For the keyboard part that floats over the top during the beginning and subsequent sections, imagine the lead violins. And the solo where Petrucci goes scale-crazy would sound great as a combined woodwind section (damn, if I had a MIDI keyboard I'd leave work to go start working on this right now).

    Anyway, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but we should think realistically about this stuff.
