    Hiya everyone,
I have some questions that you fellow jammers may be able to help
me with. The way I like to try out new bands is by finding relationships
between bands ie Metallica threw out Dave Mustaine, formed Megadeth,
Mustaine fired Chris Poland, Poland forms Damn the Machine etc. etc. I
discovered that their ie several bands related to DT that might be worth
checking out. Winter Rose was James La Brie's band. I heard it was glam,
anyone heard it? Meanstreak is John Petrucci's wife's band. Are they
signed? Are they any good? Anyone have acopy of them. I also heard Charlie
Dominoboy is singing for someone else? Can anyone point me in the
direction to the disks? Muchas Gracias!

I've been on watching you guys having fun on the jam and decided to get in
on the action, afterall it's what I joined for!

In response to the ytse-con talk: I understand the need for a centralized
    con(s), so I thought I'd suggesst a future location. Charlotte,or even
Atlanta for that matter. I can't make it to NY, Denver, or Vegas while I'm
still in school. The Mike Portnoy drum clinic showed that DT has a loyal
fan base in the area, and it wasn't even promoted that heavely. Just
imagine what a convention could draw(if the boys actually showed up).

I was attempting to wash dishes this morning and I decided to check out
eMpTyV to see what I'm supposed to be listening to these days. I barely
made it through 3 videos. I'm going to have to agree with Mojoman. I've
never listened to Poison or Warant, but the "New Music Revolution" that's
defining my generation(I'm looking into disowning Gen. X) makes me cringe.
All you need these days is 3-4 chords, a catchy anthem, some pop-driven
angst, and airtime on eMpTyV and your a musical genius! I won't get into
Guitar magazines! I've quit listening to the radio and aside from an
occasional Beaver & Buttkiss episode, I watch eMpTyV 20-30 min. a week!
(I'm glad I'm not paying for cable! Whatever happened to Headbangers'
Ball? I know Rikki Whats-his-face was annoying but where else could you
get metal, hard rock, and somewhat progressive videos? Ah the
days of old when albums didn't debut at #1 unless they were great or well
established, and going platinum meant something.

Has anyone heard when Steve Vai's next solo album is coming out, it was
supposed to be out around last fall. Rumor has it he's supposed to be
singing on a couple of tracks (ala Flying in a Blue Dream).

All the talk of the Highlander movie made me want to sit back and watch it
again. After seeing Braveheart earlier, Highlander made me want to run
around the dorm in a kilt yelling and dueling with my residents!

One last thing and then I'm off to watch the 3 stooges; does anyone here
play Illuminatti? I just got introduced to it earlier this week and it's a
lot of fun. It helps pass the time away while I'm RA'ing over break.

I think it was Ben who mentioned how DT was spelled Theatre in the FW -
Parallels liner notes, wasn't FW spelled Fatez in one of DT's liner notes?
    I think it was I&W.

Maybe since Fates misspelled DT's name, DT in return misspelled FW name.

Well, Braindance does sound like DT in the vaguest of senses. They
have a very convoluted name for their particular style, but I love it, no
matter what it's called. If you took DT, made it more experimental and
kinda jazzy, dropped James's vocals so he sounded more like Peter Steele of
Type O Negative(no he's not that low or drony, but it's the closest
comparison), and made the samples longer and more prominent, you MIGHT have
something like Braindance. Their CD, Fear Itself, plays like one long song
and it's truly amazing and can't be compared to anything within my realm of
experience faithfully. Oh yeah, and there's female vocal harmonies on top
of all that! Seriously, though, these guys kick some major ass! I hear
they're playing ProgDay '96 in Baltimore on June 29th or 30th(make sure this
doesn't overlap any of the Cons!!!). Sometimes you can get ahold of them
via email at brayndanse@aol.com, but it's sporadic. If you're interested,
check out the samples and info on IUMA's web site at http://www.iuma.com/ and
search for progressive bands in the index. Or got to Mike Backof's Unsigned
Bands Page(I forget the address, but it's in his .sig file) and get some
info there. Mail me if you need more info!

    Later,

Well said. If you want to glorify your bands, fine. But its not like we care about it too much. I mean think about it for a sec; why would WE care what YOU think about the quality of other bands compared to DT. Everyone on this list is here for a reason: to get info about DT and share common experiences. People like you only serve to mix the stew a bit. Which is ok, but you should at least tell us about these bands that are "better" then DT. Id like to listen to them.

And Im not going to get into the better issue...Been there, done that.

    >>I MEAN how much DT can you talk about before it gets old and >> repeated?!?!?!?

Well, considering as how people on this list have more DT CDs then I do, at 17, a lot. I think Ill stop wasting my time on this.

Look guys, everyone listens to different stuff. There is no use trying to convert people. S'like trying to force feed people something that they MAY like. Not worth it.

AMEN!!! Today's "popular" "music" absolutely sucks ass. Isn't that what we're all into Dream Theater for? To get away from the shit the media (ie, MTV) force feeds us, until like fucking bulemics we puke it up and can't take it anymore? I attempt to disgard prejudices concerning music, but I don't see how ANYBODY who appreciates the music of Dream Theater can listen to the music of, say, Nirvana, and not want to beat the fuck out of the idiot-mentality that spawned all of that shit and polluted the radio and tv airwaves with it for years. I'm sorry, the "I'm angry at the world so I can act like a retard" punk mentality just doesn't do it for me. If you want to express anger, do it in a REMOTELY intelligent way... hmm, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera... They've managed quite well... flames welcome, and if you agree with me and would like to rant and rave about the sordid state of affairs in the music industry don't hesitate to email me at:

I think Mike's position should be at Bass Guitar and the CD Burner

Keu@pointblank: forgivably clueless or intentionally obnoxious? You be the judge.

MojoMan: Soundgarden is _extremely_ talented. You really should listen to them before slagging. They are about as close to prog as you can get and still sound grunge-y.

YtseVegas sounds like a good 2nd to San Fran for me. Close enough to drive. Maybe we could start an Ytse-Bank to hide all the money from those who are afriad of gambling? I know I have no temptation to blow my money away like that...

    Recent purchases:

Paradise Lost: Draconian Times -- Metallica's Black Album with some gothic feel tossed in every once in a while... Cool stuff.

Ivanhoe: Symbols of Time -- German Prague Metal. Czech it out! Sounds alot like Shadow Gallery w/o as much keyboards or vocal harmonies.

Tales From Yesterday / Supper's Ready -- Pretty cool. Think I should go buy some old Genesis.

World Trade: Euphoria -- pretty good, but I think I'll like Enchant better. Just haven't found them yet.

Tori Amos: Boys for Pele -- TORI! 'nuff said. (except -- nursing a baby pig???)

WDATU: Mike's best CD to date, Bahr none, but you knew that...

Still looking for DT boots, size 9 1/2

Heya all! Just a liiittlleeee thing : Mr. Varney's letter in 'jam 1324 left me practically gibbering. I mean WHOA! Neo-classical and progressive interest ?? Should be a dream come true. But what do I see on the next jam:

    > From: rtgood@students.wisc.edu (Sir Ryan of Good) > Subject: An Open Letter to Mr. Varney > > Mr. Mike Varney: > Isn't Magna Carta and Shrapnel part of the same company?? Why would > you want to worry about progressive metal is Magna Carta already has it > covered???

A small company like Magna Carta cannot produce the marketing to make the bands known to the audience they deserve. All I've heard of MC was through this jam. I don't understand what's wrong with some more exposure for prog ? What exactly are you suggesting here? 'Go do some hiphop' ?

I don't know how great Neoclassical Metal will do these > days....the label immediately flashes Yngwie across my mental screen. I can > Guarentee that the public want's nothing to do with people who can shred but > sound the same on every album. Yngwie is one of those. Who else is there? > That's probably your point: There aren't any other neoclassical metal > musicians...just make sure you DON'T fall for any Yngwies......I could go > for some fresh metal though, even if it is in "Yngwie's Genre"

I agree with your Yngwie statements... the guy's stagnated. But why must it mean that the whole genre is to be sgragged? Okie he created it, but why can't other people try to develop it? (Hell, I'm sick of this Hendrix sound already ! =) The late thread here about the ACOS's neo-classical part showed that there IS interest in that type of music. And only fresh metal nowadays is prog metal.
