Hey kids do you like that Rock an roll? Recently there has been
some speculation as to what DT can or cannot play. I say drop it, who
really cares? You are all on this list because of the music that they
have played. So what they don't play should not matter. BTW, John
Myung played the Violin as a kid growing up around the block. I know
because I used to watch him play it when I was over his house with
Kenny. As far as I know most stuff written for the violin that he was
    playing was classical.
The bad Mix on ACOS is the result of Mr. Control freak David
Prater. I know cause I've worked with him. Let me say that from a
drummers standpoint he is an asshole. The triggered drums on I&W are
terrible. Ever listen to Metropolis live and notice the difference in
the snare drum dynamics. If Prater does the next DT album as rumored
than we all had better watch out.

Another anagram for Mr. Laussaude. " Be sundae saul "

Amen, Rich. We really need less "This band sucks, that band sucks" on here. I'm sure we've all met people that have said "DT sucks." Ged knows I have. Doesn't it piss you off? Give it a rest. BTW, Rich - call me. I've been buying CD's like a mad person recently! We gotta trade!

Here's my advice, take it or leave it. Shop around. Don't make a decision at all until the day before you have to. And, until then, press all schools to make solid offers. Throw around phrases like "Well, I've been offered X, Y, and Z to study elsewhere, but I would really rather go to your school..." It worked for me. I got myself a free ride and a stipend by playing schools off each other like that.

    Anyone agree/disagree?

Yeah, he's cool. He was very personable when I met him years ago at a meet-n-greet-signature thing before a Whitesnake show. And, he's yet another great musician from the Island! Go us! :)

I am aware that DT played part of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the release titled "A Change Of Seasons."

When I say "cover" I mean "play the song from start to finish." I don't agree that DT fully "covered Bohemian Rhapsody" at Ronnie Scotts because "Bohemian Rhapsody" was part of a medley, and didn't include any of Queen's vocals.

"Damage Inc." for instance, was not part of a medley. As horrible as Barney's vocals were for that song, that was in my opinion a "cover." They did the whole song, much the way they did with "Perfect Strangers" at Ronnie Scotts and a few of the shows from this past Christmas. What I meant is: if DT ever decides to do a FULL Queen song, I would like it to be the theme from Highlander.

I can play random licks from a multitude of songs. That doesn't mean I can "cover" any of them.

The last time I looked at a map, States like Missouri and Kansas were in the middle of the country. If this has changed, could one of you please email me!? I think I've been in front of my computer too long to have overlooked this change, especially since I *live* in Missouri!

About the Ytsecons... This is quickly turning into "Have the Ytsecon in XXXXX, it will be better for everyone, sincerly, ZZZZZ from XXXXX" There are about 1300 subscribers to this list last time I heard, and if this continues, we are going to have 1000 Ytsecons this summer, all in different cities, with about 2 people at each, and we won't have a new CD till '97! There have been several proposals, and these are the ones that look good... Long Island. This has worked in the past, so stick with what you know. This works well for all of the East coasters. Las Vegas. This is a bit more central, cheap to get to (just watch your asses in the casinos!), and has gotten a good response. Plus, it will be "The Official Ytsecon of Ytse-Ben." Who could ask for anything more? (if your are new at this, that is sarcastic/hypothetical) Finally, there is the Mid-YtseCon, which would serve as a catch-all for those who can't get to Vegas or NY. I think the three cover the states pretty well (even those central states, like Colorado :P ). I'm not saying we can't have more than that, but lets be serious here.

    Let the flames begin!

Hi Damien! In fact, Sieges Even was the band I admired the most before I knew of Dream Theater's existence back in 1992... Check out their third album "A Sense Of Change" (1991), which reminds me a lot of the sound of 80s Rush, a lot of great clean guitar sounds, weird time sigs, great songwriting with orchestration...

They also have a new one out, called "Sophisticated" (1995), featuring a new singer and a new guitarist, who absolutely plays in the same league as Petrucci. He's incredible! The whole album sounds very DTish and is recommended to every open-minded DT fan. Go out and check it out! I'm sure you'll like it! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tilman Kuendgen --- tiku@rz.uni-sb.de ...half human, half mail... Traders! Hi all

various bits and pieces in the last jams have got me thinking, and some of the other stuff that follows just popped into my head. This could be a long one (as the bishop said to the actress).

    1. The various interpretations of the lyrics to Lie made me realize once more just how little attention I actually pay to what James is singing. I like the sound of his voice, and I now know some bits of some of the texts through repeated listening, but be honest, how many of you would know all of the lyrics without having read them? This is not a dig at Dream Theater, just a comment that also applies to a lot of other bands. Some bands don't even bother printing the lyrics and that's fine by me (if my memory serves me correctly, I think the first band to provide lyrics was the Beatles on Sgt. Peppers). Would we all like Dream Theater if they came from Iceland and sang everything in Iclandic? I would like to think so. It's the music that counts. Which brings me on to my next point.

    2. Last week I had the audacity to confess that I had been to see Silverchair and liked it. Death to the blasphemer! Some people really went over the top in their e-mails to me, so just to put the record straight: Dream Theater make some of my favourite music, but I don't listen to just Dream Theater, and I don't listen to them that often. This makes their music special to me - something to be enjoyed and savoured. I am overall a very sensuous person, and I sometimes liken listening to music to eating and drinking: everything that I "consume" has to agree with my own tastes and be well done for what it is. If I'm in the mood for a cheese sandwich and a beer, then a good cheese sandwich with a good beer, not just some cheap crap from the nearest deli. If, however, I want something more demanding, for example beef in red wine, the same applies. I expect what I consider to be quality, and I certainly eat more cheese sandwiches than beef in red wine. Anyway, complexity doesn't always equate with better: one of my favourite things is oysters and champagne, and what could be simpler than that, but then again, that is also something for special occasions. In my mind, it is the every-day things that make me realize just how good the special things are. I think if I listened to any one particular band or type of music all the time, it would go stale on me fairly quick. Just my opinion.

    3. Time for a music tip. If you like nice, slow melodic piano stuff like on Shadow Gallery's "Carved in Stone", then check out the track "...A Distance There Is" by the Norwegian band Theatre Of Tragedy. A really beautiful song, very moody and atmospheric, with just a piano, the female vocalist and a thunderstorm. It sends shivers down my teeth just thinking about it.

    4. Did anybody else catch the Headbanger's Ball "Bay Area" special on Sunday? Some good stuff with Machine Head in the studio, and a live preview of one of the new songs, which sounded good, but the recording quality was pretty poor. On to my point. I fell asleep at about 1.15, and I was wondering if Rob Flynn said when the new album can be expected. Any help, anybody?

    5. Pantera: beckon and call. Judas Priest: breaking the law. Yes (I forget who commented on the similarity, but I agree with you).

    6. For any Kraut jammers in the Rhein-Main area: Vanden Plas will be playing in Wiesbaden on the 30th of April. See you there (contact me if you want more details).

Well, I guess that just about covers everything for now. Looking forward to getting my copy of the Superior CD (thanks Bernd).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

Hi, I'm looking for DT boots. I particularly like the ones JM is wearing on the I & W back cover, but hey, I'm not picky. Anyone know if Kev wore boots any time? He had the best shirts, so it would stand that he had the best boots. __ /\ __ __\/__\/__ \_||_/ ~Chris /__||__\ // \ | \\ \|

I love reading a bog ol' pile of jams in reverse order. Makes me feel like a time traveler.

Kobayashi Anagrams? Cool. How about a reformed Mr. Scrooge, who is told not to say "Humbug" anymore, wondering:

    "Is 'bah' okay?"

Well, it's just the last name, but whaddaya expect on no sleep for free?

    mmm. corndog. __ /\ __ __\/__\/__ \_||_/ ~Chris /__||__\ // \ | \\ \|
