    Howzit!!

First of all, this is my mom's account, so I will show up as Sheila, but
I'm not. I am Cory Swanson from Denver Colorado.

I am in a band called Orpheus that has only been in motion since November,
so we haven't made it out of the basement. But, hey, I'm only 15. DT is
the only band that everyone in the band likes, so I have come to worship them.

Enough about me. About James LaBrie's voice distorting on ACoS. I've
been in the studio to record a CD before. Sometimes the mistakes are
intended. We used mikes that distorted when the vocals got too loud to give
it a different sort of feel. Just listen to anything by Janis Joplin.
Distortion city there. The equipment back then wasn't built to handle her
voice, so they let the flaws slide to give it a lo-fi distorted feel.
However, I am not sure that that is DT's way of doing things. About John
P's different guitar sound coming in. It might be a guitar overdub,
although I haven't listened to this area of the song in detail since I read
    the message.

How about holding the Ytsecon in Denver? It's right in the middle of the
country, and, therefore, will cause equal distress for everyone to get here.

    C Ya,
    Cory

Wow, it's good to be back. Being at school and losgin the e-mail
address for the new list(s) due to the computer here crashing and the backup
tapes getting screwed up has made me lose about three weeks of 'jams. Let me
just say that it does feel good to be back here.
Anyway, guess what I heard on the radio today (drum roll please). I
heard none other than the opening part for Learning to Live. Now, while it
was, for the most part, played in the background during a morning show (Steve
& D.C. - no.1 in St. Louis!), it was unmistakably DT. It's kind of sad when
I get so worked up over hearing just a short segment of a song on the radio.
I mean, it's sad that the radio constantly overlooks great music (though I
do get a good helping of Rush, Pink Floyd, and U2 here, so it's not ALL bad).
Oh yeah, and about this Ytsecon thing. I agree it would be most
conevnient for me if it had more of a central location (i.e. Chicago - that
would kick since it's only about a 6 hour drive for me), but I also realise
that it might not exactly be the most convenient location for those planning
it, and that's where it would really matter, I guess. Anyway you look at it,
it would probably be worht going to, no matter the location (I'd try and road
trip out to Vegas if it was there, or somewhere else, if possible). I hope
it goes well, whether or not I can make it.
Anyway, I better jet. I'll be at the Iron Maiden show tomorrow
(Tues. March 5) at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis. If any of y'all are
going to be there, let me know and we'll hook up. Catch you all later. God
    bless.

+++Hi. I'm that guy. I'm going to try to restrain myself with
this reply. I'm confused as to the moral wrong that I have committed. I
was not comparing DT to Poison and Warrant. I was merely listing them as
bands that I love. You seem to be implying that DT is "above" bands like
Poison and Warrant. I fail to see the grounds for such a value judgement.
Sure DT is a hundred times more complex than they are, but complexity
does not impress me. Good music does ("good" in the sense that _I_ enjoy
listening to it) and in this respect, all three bands score big time. I
see DT being mentioned in the same breath as bands that I'm not too crazy
about all the time on the jam and I never resort too such arrogant speech
as what was written above. I have found that in the two years I've been
on the jam overbearing statements such those are ill-advised. I don't
know how long you have been on the jam, so perhaps you already know this
and just chose to ignore it. Luckily, I'm not the type that gives a
flying fuck what people think of the music I listen to (obviously, given
my tastes). However, I hope that I never see you post about how
prog-rock/metal isn't given a fair shake and is laughed at by the
"unenlightened" because you are guilty of the same crime yourself. I
never asked anyone to like my music, just respect it. Actually, you don't
even have to respect it, just don't publicly disrespect it.

                                                    Richie

P.S. The relevance of my inital listing of DT, Poison, and Warrant was
that the girl I mentioned implied that because the music I listen to
isn't on the top of the charts or available at any Wherehouse outlet
(same difference) it is invalid. I found the remark to be extremely
telling of what I consider to be the sad state of the music industry. No
    more, no less.

I can't figure out for sure whether that was a practical joke or an
honest mistake, but here's what I have poked up:

Dream Theater thanks Fates Warning in When Dream and Day Unite (1989).

Fates Warning thanks Dream Theatre in Parallels (1991).

Dream Theater thanks Fatez Warning in Images and Words (1992).

You be the judge... The mis-spelling in Images and Words was
intentional, either as a practical joke or a way to make fun of Fates for
    spelling DT wrong.

Hi, my name's Mario, and I'm addicted to Dream Theater. But just for
the record don't bother with the name Mario, nobody online really uses
it, I go by Rip if you want to direct anything to me or say anything
    about me.

Ok I've finally gotten on to this damn thing, although I've know
of it for a long time I just havent a chance to cuz i've been in the
middle of switching ISP's. Ok I've finally found one, although I STILL
havent gotten on it yet, but I just decided to post from here
anyways... so currently i'm RipZero@ix.netcom.com but soon it'll be
RipZero@inlink.com. This is a pointless post, just pretty much
introducing myself to everyone who hasnt met me on IRC yet... And
expect to hear more from me, and if you think you've seen some weird
stuff from Laussade just wait'll i get settled in for the ride ;)
Although I'm afraid nobody can top the bewildered soul that is Bafu...
And If anyone's got some DT boots (tapes not videos for now,
because i have no video callateral) I cant say I've got any DT stuff,
but if anyones Interested in any Rare Ozzy Osbourne stuff I got a tape
of stuff that if theres ever been a rare ozzy song you've been lookin
for, its probably on this tape. I also got a kick ass Helloween (If ya
dont know who they are they're very reminescent of Iron Maiden) import
that I could dub you a copy of. I can also get a dub of an old Ozzy
concert from 81 or 82 with randy rhoads, which will be in my hands
shortly. And if anyone bought that one Pantera Far Beyond Driven mini
Box Set with those Live EPs i'd be interested in trading for a dub of
    one of those.
I do have one video for trade, its this van halen thing a buddy
compiled together, ranging from 1978 or somethin up to 86 or 88. The
end has this HILARIOUS interview of eddie completely drunk off his ass
and Valerie is having to answer all these questions for him and she
gets ticked off... pretty funny if you're interested. It also has some
Live footage that literally looks like somebody on the crew got a hold
of a camcorder and taped, and some old live stuff as well. Its also got
this segment of Van Halen w/ David and theyre all synched and not
really playing and david keeps doing these tongue licks around his lips
while the vocals are going on... and the video for pretty woman is at
the beginning, and an interview with dlr on Letterman and one on that
old music show i cant remember right now... But the whole tape is
really worth it and if anyone wants to trade a DT concert for it i'll
do it, its a full tape worth of stuff, gimme yer tape and i'll fill it
to the brim no matter what it is... Well, unless its one of those
fucked up six hour tapes, which brings me to a question - why do 4 hour
movies come out in 2 tapes when you can buy 6 hour video tapes? i also
got Live W/O A Net if you're interested.

Ok this is just some responses to #1320 -

first off - e-man... get yer head checked bro' Youre dreaming about
Ben AND computer stuff all at once. Thats not good man! Its not healy
to be dreaming about computers, and, well, ben is self explanitory :)

For bens post- ben tell your aunt or whoever that they've got a long
lost nephew cuz i'm hitchin a ride up to ytse-con new york with ya!

As for those watches - yeah it sounds cool to me, but I'm still
skeptical about it... 30 bucks is a pretty nice price to pay for a
little thing that goes on your wrist and tells something i dont even
believe in, although DT would be totally cool to have on it. I'd just
like to hear a bit more before i jump in...

As for Poison and Warrant - I'm not getting into anything on what I
think about these bands, but lemme ask you this - would you rather be
stuck in eternety listening to greenday, or one of these two bands?
    Case and point... anyone disagree?...

Ok thats all i've got to say from that, not like anyone gives a shit,
just here to make your day shorter and your jam longer ;)

Ok that about wraps up this post... Ketch all ya jammers later...

Well, I have a little of a dilema before me. I have been accepted to
Berklee for next fall; but I don't know if I want to go there anymore. I
have been looking at North Texas and they offer better scholarship opps
than Berklee does...I just don't know what I should do. I have been
going to CSU Stanislaus for the past year, I have a year of Theory and
Eartraining under my belt as with a jazz arrainging course...Any input on
the two schools and any other suggestions as far as schools go would be
    appreciated.
I want to get the most out of my college years, and I want every
dollar I spend on it count...I want ot get the most bang for the buck,
yet Berklee has that rep...Another reason I am thinking about NT is that
    I heard their 1 o'clock jazz band's latest
release..whoa..impressive..they sound more professional than most
professional groups..their drummer is slammin'! Well, enough for now..

    Hello Jammers,

Dream Theater got mentioned in the latest issue of Progression
magazine, which just came out (issue 18). This is a great magazine with
information on all type of progressive music from metal to rock to jazz
    to symphonic to Canterbury.
They were brought up as an influence of the bannd Braindance in
an interview with Sabastian Elliot, the vocalist of the band. If you
check out the CD "Fear Itself" there are a few parts that could possibly
be from DT songs, However the band has larger influences from King
Crimson to Nine Inch Nails to Queensryche to Yes to Techno music. Great
music, one of the most original CDs I have heard in some time, and I get
CDs from Unsigned Bands all of the time to review, plus I buy quite a few
    disks.

plus they are from New York.

    Hello Jammers,

Here is a mini list of some of the bands I have been listening to recently:

check out my WWW page http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/munsign.html

    for more information.

Salem Hill: Carl Groves (guitar, keys, vox) made me a tape of several of
their albums. This band is fantastic, a mix of Kansas and
Asia, plus newer Yes and Saga. They pull together well
and write accessable songs with a bit of an edge, they don't
approach cheesy like some of Asia's material (IMO e-mail me
if you want to discuss Asia, and "Is it Prog"). The Self Titled
album and the concept album "The Robbery of Murder" are the
best IMO. All the albums have Kansas influenced harmonic vocals.

                    e-mail: cgroves@mindspring.com

23rd Hour: This band is making some great instrumental music. It harkens
to Peter Gabriel and 1980s King Crimson, with a mix of Rush,
really complex, yet to fits with the vocals. They also have
a bit of alternative influence which comes through in the vocals.
The lyrics don't really appeal to me that much, but the vox are
OK and grow on you, but the music is fantastic.

                    e-mail: t3rdHOUR@aol.com

Arcanum: This band harkens back to the days of early 80s music, kinda
a Roxy Music meets Duran Duran. Good dance beat, great lyrics,
the fans of 80s alternative (New Order, DMode, Tears for Fears)
will like this. Ask for a copy of the CD.

                    e-mail: fjschieber@aol.com

Tempo Tantrum: This band brings Rush and Dream Theater influences and
mixes it with Van Halen and stylings of hard rock bands.
Instrumentally brilliant, the vocalist is good, though
album lacks the punch, and isn't terribly complex.

e-mail: see my WWW page or mail me, have to look it up

Superior: Their CD "Behind" is a must for any prog-metal fan, I listed
it in the r.m.progressive poll as one of my favorite
releases of 1995. Great use of piano, they are just a bit
better than Shadow Gallery, more edge in the vocals and
music, and all of the songs are composed really well. The
lyrics are also better than Shadow Gallery. (Not to rag
on Shadow Gallery, "Carved in Stone" is a fantastic album!)
I highly recommend this CD, Bernd (Guitar, keys) is on the
list he posts from time to time, or you can visit my WWW
site or e-mail me to get his address.

I must say, Ytsejam 1320 was, by far, the most enjoyable 'jam I've read in
    recent times.

    Hello Jammers,

Someone mentioned the Ozric Tentacles: You are right, silly name, fatastic band, a mix of psychedelic and metal, live they are fantastic. Their best albums IMO are "Erpland", "Live Underslunky", and Pungent Efflucient"(I murdered the spelling on this one).

Now in and about the CD player:

disk 1 - Braindance: Fear Itself disk 2 - Progfest 94: Disk 1 (Halloween, Kalaban, Anglagard, Episode, Echolyn disk 3 - Gongzilla: Suffer (I saw some of the members of this jazz-fusion project over the weekend and they were great!) disk 4 - Superior: Behind (buy this now! <grin> too subtle?) disk 5 - UK: UK (I read the Progression interview with Eddie Jobson, had to put this in) disk 6 - Fourth Estate: See What I See ( a mix of Steve Morse and Kings X all instrumental, killer music)

Any questions or info e-mail me and I'll put you in the queue <grin>

    Later,

    Mike

Oh boy. It looks like I opened up a can o'worms with my question about Liszt. My opinion (though it may not matter much since I have very little musical knowledge) is that Derek and Kevin COULD play Liszt if they wanted to and worked at it. I think they're both talented enough to do it. I'm not saying they could do it right away. But I think the musical talent is there.

Now, on with my responses to the digest:

Yes! Kermit rules! <G> [deleted more]

    > >This girl that I'm friends with didn't know what kind of music I > >normally listen to (DT, Poison, Warrant, etc). > > Poison, Warrant, AND DT in the same sentence?

At least he didn't say WINGER.

    [deleted even more]

[deleted message - hey who need the message? It's the sig that counts!] > P.S. "Sorry about the mess" - Han Solo, (referring to the crap below)

Wuher: Dammit, Solo, I said NO BLASTERS. Well at least you got rid of that Rodian scum.

Well, it would have been cool had Wuher (the bartender) said that. <G>

And no, I'm NOT going to quote the mess.

    Now, it's BAFU TIME!

    > From: Steve Borzilleri <magellan@u.washington.edu> > Subject: Highlander > > Neat thing is, when I first heard I&W, I saw "Highlander" a month later > and heard the music by Queen and thought, "Boy, this Dream Theater could > probably do a really cool soundtrack if anyone ever does another > Highlander." Little did I know there already was a second one in the works > and a third on the horizon.

But the second one sucked majorly. The third one would have been okay if it didn't copy the first. And it would have been VERY cool if DT had done some of the music.

    > > In the original movie there is a song by Queen called To Live Forever. > > You guys probably knew that already, but it may be news to those of you > > who have actual lives outside the TV. > > I don't think that's the actual title, but that song Kicks Ass. Hey, I like "We Are The > Champions" as much as anyone, but that Highlander theme just hurts brains. > ("hurts brains" (c) WildKoba Magical Brain-Hurting-Funk Productions 1996)

The actual title is "Who Wants to Live Forever" and you're right about it kicking some buttocks. And DT HAS covered Queen song (or, at least, partially). "Bohemian Rhapsody" was part of the "Big Medley" at Ronnie Scott's and on ACOS. > > ( >__< ) "Death is the first > - < > > dancing turtle" -James LaBrie > > <*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<*<* > > James LaBrie said that? Hey, he actually MIGHT have said that! Maybe you weren't hearing things after all, huh?

Mark my words.

I hate to be picky (but I'm going to be anyway). The third Highlander movie was called Highlander III: The Final Dimension. It's tentative subtitles before the movie was released were "The Wizard" and "The Sorceror." It was better than part II, but it mirrored the first one too much. > From: babs@sgenva.cc.geneseo.edu (Barb Battaglia) > Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 1314 > > Hello everyone, it's BABS. Everyone: Hello Babs!

I just wanted to do that. This has been another low-DT content message from:

Paul aka Baron Singer (leader of that band of musical vampires, the Singer Vampires. On guitar, we have the lovely Irini Singer. On bass is Veldrane of Singer and on percussion, it's Granny Singer! Just watch it if she rings that Apocalypse Chime!)
