             I'm not so sure that I agree that the first album you hear buy a band is
    automatically your favorite. Granted, that album will always hold a
    special place in your heart, but I think most people are able to realize
    when a band has surpassed even its own achievements. That being said, I'm
    going to totally go back on that statement and say that I like I&W better
    than Awake. And I'm not really sure why. I certainly hate the triggered
    drums (making a drummer with such subtle grace notes use triggers should
    be a capital offense). And for some reason, the studio version of LtL
    doesn't do it for me (but the live version blows me away). Maybe it's
    because I&W contains my favorite DT song of all time ("Surrounded") as
    well as such masterpieces and DT staples like "Metropolis" and TTT. But
    mainly I think it is just a question of time. Due to all that legal
    bullshit they had to go through w/Mechanic, they had years (I assume) to
    constantly refine and rework a song. They only had three months (I think)
    to write all of Awake. From what I understand, it took them that long just
    to write Metropolis. I'm not saying that Awake sounds rushed, because it
    is one of the most brilliant albums I've ever heard. I just think that if
    given more time, they could have given the songs a little more...texture,
    I guess is the word I'm looking for. I don't know. Maybe I'm full of
    shit. Okay, I'm full of shit. I'm glad they didn't put out Images and
    Words II though. At least they have the balls to try new stuff (The
    Silent Man, Space-Dye Vest). As long as they do that, they'll be
    progressive.

    goes: Any critiques or compliments gladly welcomed. I wrote this last summer
    and would like to share it with everyone:

    Dt content: I've fallen in love with Awake. IMHO, I&W is #2, ACOS #3, I
    can't say much for WDADU I haven't heard it yet. I've heard mention of an
    acoustic version of LSOaD-Is this the version on Awake? Forgive me if this
    is a really dumb question-I'm new to these guys. If it isn't, is there
    actually a prettier version of this? It's a pretty song-I truly enjoy it.
    Yes, I have to admit that Dream Theater is the first band I've actually
    gotten truly exited about since I discovered Rush and Pink Floyd. It's been
    a long time.Yes, I finally broke down and ordered WDADU. Hopefully it'll be
    here soon.

    I'll be trying the IRC saturday night- I hope to get it to work this time-I
    downloaded the one mentioned on an earlier "jam" I get home too late(early)
    to really find anyone there-I think- anywhere between midnight and 3am most
    nights. If theres someone that is there-let me know.

         To my eyes GADEM's post dripped in condescension and sounded
    so....snobbish that I really got pissed. Your post didn't seem to be in
    the same vein. For GADEM to call Dream Theater's music "stuff?" To
    offhandedly laugh off the idea??? BAHHHH!!!!!!! I'll remember that IF I
    ever see anything by the mighty GADEM....who is probably a TECHNICIAN extraordinaire.
       I do believe that more than a few classical musicians, such as GADEM,
    have piss poor attitudes that really drive me nuts. A great concert
    pianist who is able to wrench every ounce of emotion from a piece and do it
    in a way that has NOT been done before IS an artist. There are just TOO
    many classically trained people that confuse being a great technician with
    being a great artist...sometimes the greatest artists ENTIRELY LACK formal
    training (Jimi Hendrix). Art is creation. Art is not just expression
    and/or technique. As to classical training....do you mean to tell me that
    Kevin Moore didn't start PLAYING until college? What about all those years
    that came before? And don't read too much into comments like "I didn't
    have what it took..." That could mean any number of things...he might not
    have had the time....he might not have had the interest (I wonder if he
    REALLY loves classical....if he didn't, he probably wouldn't stay), he
    might've had the time, the talent, even the inclination...but just couldn't
    hack that kind of a setting....etc. Another point...remember the classical
    musicians who thought rock was cake and tried to jump headfirst into it.
    There has been at least ONE of note. I have the utmost respect for
    classical musicians who love what they do, sacrifice enormous ammounts of
    time to their training...and then end up getting paid peanuts for all of
    that effort. On the other hand, that does NOT give them the right to be
    condescending. There are many classically trained pianists that CAN play
    Liszt and that would jump ship in a moment to perform with Dream
    Theater....why didn't they make the cut? I honestly don't know whether
    Kevin Moore can play Liszt...I really doubt if Darek can...but I am so sick
    of hearing classically trained musicians acting as if they have some kind
    of monopoly on talent and art that I can't stand it. I know this has
    turned into a TIRADE. And I'm NOT aiming this at YOU...really I'm not. I
    just had to state my stance.

    PS: The new album of ANGRA (brazilian band) is a masterpiece! "holy land" is
    very innovative and experimental. Classical music has never been as well
    integrated in heavy metal as it is on "Holy land". Highly recommended...

    Yes, I've heard that "Showdown" is a song to be on the forthcoming album.
    If this is true, why did Mike Bahr take that name and use it to title the
    2+ year-old instrumental "Barfbag?" Did DT play this same instrumental at
    a show during the summer of 1995 and say it was called "Showdown?" I have
    a tape of the NAMM show from 1994, in which Petrucci does the instrumental
    on the end of WDATU and says, "Thank you...that was Barfbag..." Plus Mike
    Portnoy has referred to this instrumental on more than one occasion as
    "Barfbag," so when did the name change, or is Mike Bahr mixed up?

    Let me try to get this straight:

    "Moon Bubbles" is the instrumental usually found after "To Live Forever."
    It starts out with volume swells on keys and guitar, and is basically
    played at the same tempo and key as "TLF."

    "Barfbag" is a very uptempo, jazzy piece that starts out with chromatic
    guitar and kicks into a real groovy, rather long guitar spot.

    Does anyone remember if "Showdown" had any lyrics if/when DT actually
    played it live? Was it the instrumental from the end of WDATU? Is there
    anyone alive who has WDATU and has heard the ending instrumental, and has
    also heard "Showdown," and can tell me if the two are the same?

    One other question: Did DT play three or four shows in Japan a few months
    ago to support ACOS?

    Hi all

    I secumbed to the temptation of the tube last night. I admit it was a sign of
    a weak character, but I only watched videos. I started the evening off nice
    and gently with Sepultura's "Third World Chaos", and followed it with "Live
    in Tokio" by some East coast band. The drummer played a solo which was loosely
    based on "By Demons Be Driven" by Pantera, so logically the next video to be
    shoved into the hungry maw of my insatiable VCR was "Vulgar Video". Has anybody
    else seen it? Those guys could certainly give us a few tips about drinking
    games! And talk about powerful music - the live versions of "Domination" and
    "Primal Concrete Sledge" that they play in Moscow have got to be some of the
    most electric, energetic, rawest, toughest, hardest music I have ever heard. It
    is no wonder that Mike Portnoy paid a little tribute to the band by sneaking
    that little bit of "By Demons Be Driven" into his solo (some Dream Theater
    content).

    Talking of Pantera and Mike Portnoy: a couple of older bands (notably The
    Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers) had two drummers. How about having
    Mike Portnoy and Vinnie Paul play together? They would blow the combination
    of Chester Thompson/Phil Collins clean out of the water. Or let's really go
    over the top, and include Chris Kontos (ex Machine Head) as well - let's get
    ready to rumble!

    My two smallest coins-worth of your local currency about the gay/sex/drugs/etc
    stuff: as far as I'm concerned, the whole band (or bits of it) could rodger
    each other with prize leeks and do a six-pack of hamsters each weekend while
    drinking industrial cleaning fluid through a tramp's old sock - it's the music
    that counts for me. As Ian Dury used to sing "sex and drugs and rock'n'roll are
    all my mind and body need". (Pulls on asbestos underwear and retires to nuclear
    shelter).

    By the way, I bought "Machine Fish" by the Galactic Cowboys yesterday: nice.

    What does it take to play classical music? Howabout a different
    question...

    Any guitarists out there? Think you can't possibly tap like Jennifer
    Batten? Count the number of fingers she has, then count yours. If you both
    have the same number, chances are you're capable of the same techniques.

    So what does it take to play classical music? It takes exactly what I've
    got; a brain, a will, and ten nimble fingers. When Liszt was born he was a
    messy, crying baby with no talent and no intelligence whatsoever. And he
    certainly couldn't play the piano. Coincidentally, I was born the same
    way. With Absolutely Nothing. All humans start at ground zero.

    There's no reason in the world why Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian "can't"
    play Franz Liszt. I would say that people "can't" breathe gasoline because
    they CAN'T. As for a person not being able to do what another person does,
    in all of my humility I will state right here that unless you have eleven
    fingers or a third arm, you must be pretty damn incredible to pull off a
    technique on the fretboard that I "can't" learn.

    Yes, I know Liszt is technical. So is Chopin. Any idea why no one on this
    list has mentioned Alkan? Yes he was a contemporary of these two "popular"
    pianists, with an existence almost completely obscured due to the ungodly
    technical nature of his music. There are Chopin competitions held in
    Warsaw every year. There are no Alkan competitions, and I don't believe
    there ever will be, simply because, as stated above, all humans start at
    ground zero. No one begins life with ten years of piano lessons under
    their belt. Maybe when people are living past the age of 100 there will be
    time for such refinement of ability necessary to play Charles Valentin
    Alkan.

    There are no Alkan competitions, and there is a reason for this. But I
    don't doubt for a second that if someone were to dedicate their lives to
    playing the piano all the time, every day, and nothing else, they could
    learn to play Alkan, Liszt, and Chopin with one hand while eating bologna
    sandwiches with the other.

    I'm going to assume you've never heard how Paul Gilbert played his guitar
    on Mr. Big's 1993 album, "Bump Ahead." Compare that with his Racer X days
    and you will be very confused. Compare both of those with what he does at
    clinics, and you will wonder why the hell he holds back so much with Mr.
    Big. Not that I'm implying DT are capable of doing loads more than they
    already do, I think they already blast as much as they can into their
    music. They give all they've got and more. (they don't give up till
    they've no more to give, bottoms up) I'm just saying that many musicians
    are capable of much, much more than what you hear on their albums.

    Final note: Anyone ever heard of a violinist named Midori? She's very
    talented. Do you think if I were to hand her an Ibanez she could play like
    John Petrucci? What's the purpose of that question? Ask Socrates. But I'll
    bet if you took Midori's mind and transferred it to Petrucci's body, you
    could hand her a violin and she'd still be able to rip through Paganini's
    24 Caprices. (of course it's not possible to transfer minds from body to
    body, that's not my point)

    Just my thoughts on the capabilities of the human being.

    Hi!
    This is my first post to the jam, the list that's kept me
    entertained, outraged, amused and disgusted through the harsh winter
    months. It's nice to now you can log on and settle down to a warm
    Ytsejam anytime you want.
    OK, 2 things:
    Can somebody tell me if the Japanese Import version of "Live At The
    Marquee" is different to the UK version? [good, DT content, I'm doing
    well]
    Also, has anyone heard of a band called Believer? They're a kind of
    thrash metal band, I think they're German, and they're weird. They
    play pretty strange stuff (dissonance, odd timings, etc.), and
    their vocalist sounds like a pissed-off mutant frog (pissed-off 'cos
    he's a mutant frog, probably). The reason I think Believer are
    brilliant is that it reminds me of DT music in that it's complicated,
    heavy and different [there, er, DT content - thin ice, thin ice].
    I've got this tape of theirs but I haven't a clue what it's called
    (it's a copy) or what any of their other albums are called, where I
    can get them, etc. The one I have has this trilogy of songs
    featuring a string quartet and a female opera singer! Can anybody
    enlighten me?

    About DT ending up on Magna Carta, I dont think that will happen. I mean
    how many DT fans have a cd by like Magellan? Not many, most of them would
    be from this list. I would have never heard of any of the Magna Carta
    bands/tributes if it wasn't for this list. DT sells way more cds than any
    of the Magna Carta bands.

    I know this is off topic, but I have seen 2 posts about it. About the
    KISS topic, there is no way Gene and Paul fired Eric Carr. That is a bunch

    was in it. Also by the tiem Eric Carr got ill with cancer of the heart he
    was a full fledged member. Paul Stanley quoted after his death that Eric Carr
    was such an important part of KISS and such a great person. RIP

    Has anyone gotten that mac DT program to work? I've saved it as source
    but Stuffit Expander wont recognize it and unstuff it. Can anyone who has
    it put it on the web as a normal link where the file is transferred and
    automatically unstuffed by Netscape? Has anyone gotten this to work?
    Has Ed Poltzin (sp) gotten it to work since it is on his page?

    Still no tapes from al balkewicz.

    An interesting note: it seems when everyone discusses Tori Amos, they use
    languange like "she's very special" or "intimate warmth." When we speak of DT
    it's "they rule", "Portnoy kicks ass", etc. Is it because she's a she? The
    ethereal vibes she puts out? I'm not a fan of hers at all. Don't dig her
    style, not impressed with her abilities (i've only heard Under the Pink as I
    guess that's been her biggest seller via MTV). That may bias what I hear or
    the connotations I get when fans discuss her. LATER-
