since there's been a strong response to this, here's some more
details. hope to hear from you soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
here is the basic information for the DREG Internet Compilation CD:
- Submission deadline is April 15!
- material should be original, copyrighted, and preferably in the
"progressive" style. since the definition of "progressive" is varied,
don't be afraid to submit even if you're not sure.
- you can submit any number of songs you want, but if it's more than
3, be sure to note your 3 preferences in order. in all likelyhood, only one song per
band will be used.
- for evaluation, you can send any format (except vinyl...). for the
final product, i will need (in order of preference) either CD-R, DAT
or VERY high quality tape. final submissions must be "releasable
quality" which can range from hi quality home recordings to studio masters.
If you're not sure about the quality of your submission, send it
anyway; you'd be surprised what some fancy mastering can do.
*** Submissions are NOT returned. DO NOT SEND YOUR MASTERS TO ME
FOR SUBMISSIONS. If your submission is selected and you haven't
already sent your best copy or master, i will then ask you for a master which
WILL be returned. ***
- there's no set limit on time lengths, but the idea is to get as
many bands involved in this as possible, so don't screw yourself by
only submitting a twenty minute song.
- there will be a small, yet-to-be-determined royalty based on units sold.
if your band is selected to be included, you will received a simple
contract which explains the details of all this. nothing to stress
about...
- You also might want to do a trademark search on your band names. A
few of the band names already submitted sounded familiar...
- Send submissions to:
DREG Records
1912 Old Stonemill Dr
Cranbury, NJ 08512
** Make sure to include the phone # and address of a single contact person **
- Approximate Time frames:
March/April - band selection and notification
April/May - contracts and other details
May/June - mastering, artwork
June/July - duplication
July - release
I look forward to hearing your contributions.

..on the jam that likes country music? It sure feels that way...
HA! My taste for country music is far more flame-worthy on this list than
Poison or Warrant!!! Not only that, but I actually like ABBA, Ace of
Base and the Village People! I have committed far more serious crimes!
Let the Ytse-Police book me for listening to the ultimate crap!!!! Flame
me so hard and make me wish I never subscribed to this list!!!
[serious mode: on]
IMHO, it is the most arrogant thing you can do to put down another genre
of music. Who are you to say what should and should not exist? Do you
have a masters degree in music or something? The truth is, so-and-so
doesn't suck, they just don't jive with your personal aesthetic.
Skadz is right If you made a list of everything every Jammer listened
to, you'd cover an awful lot of ground. Admit it. There's goofy stuff
in everybody's CD/tape collection. Guilty pleasures abound on the
Ytsejam and on TNMS.
Come to IRC sometime.

SORRY, MOJOMAN!!!!!!!
So you and keu or Jon or whatever his name is work together. Any ideas
about what's going on in that pointy little head of his? Maybe a few
anti-social tendencies? A need for conflict? Inborn Masochism? Has his
inner child been given a good spanking lately? :) Just kiddin', sorry
about getting you in on the flamefest.
NOW for KEU...or JON.
If you love Dream Theater...then answer your own questions, grasshopper.

Yeah... too damn far! :) But, here's an idea. I had a really great
time at YtseCon II. I mean, it really was a lot of fun. We played
music, met each other, talked behind Bafu's back... oh. Um, well, the
point is this: there was no band, and I didn't notice. That would have
been icing, but as it was I really enjoyed it. Let's hold 20 YtseCons
this summer, and just hang out and have a good time. And if the band can
make two or three of them, then try to get to those two or three. We're
cool enough to make any Ytsecon fun.

That's a fun game to play. Think of a band, and try to get to Bill Bruford in six steps or less.

I hate to single you out here, Neil, but this is the sort of stuff I think we all want to get away from. Personally, I'm into Dream Theater because they're good, not because other bands are bad. I still don't see what's so impossible about liking what's on MTV and liking Dream Theater. And, please don't go around saying "this sucks" and "that sucks." It weakens your argument.
DISCLAIMER: I haven't watched MTV since August, so I don't know what they play anymore. (Maybe this going away to school thing was a better idea than I thought. :) I'm assuming, however, that we're still talking about grunge and the bands that it has spawned.
Here's my other thought on the issue. I don't like the fact that MTV has made a mockery of music. I don't like the fact that they ultimately decide what is popular. But does that mean that I can't like what *is* popular? Come on, we all loved it when Metallica and GnR were on daytime MTV. How much you wanna bet the grunge-heads had this same discussion?

Here's the story, folks.
There is a Highlsnder 3. It is called Highlander: The Final Dimension, and it sucks. Whoever said that it was an exact copy of the first one is right. They even use a ton of footage from the first movie, I mean half of the plot is just that McCleod geek flashing back in his memory to when each of his girlfriends throughout history ended up buying the farm.
In each of the three movies there is a scene where the bad guy is driving a motor vehicle recklessly while freaking the hell out of innocent people. In each of the three movies there is a new girlfriend. In each of the three movies Conor has to make a new sword with which to cut off some dude's head. In each of the three movies this process takes WAY too long, and we girls would have preferred if Christopher Lambert had not permanently taken his shirt off 30 seconds after the movie started.
In my humble opinion, the makers of Highlander would have been much better off if they had just stopped after the first movie. The series is pretty good, though. Adrienne Paul is cute. He needs a haircut, though.
One more thing
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<<<<<<<<<< DT CONTENT >>>>>>>>>>>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "Erotomania Part" in the beginning of EM that nobody recognizes in any other "Mind Beside Itself" songs DOES show up for a few minutes in Voices if you listen carefully to the keyboards in the background when the guy is saying "you've got to know who you're dealing with....."

Hi all. I think something needs to be done about the whole YtseCon situation. Obviously we all want it but no one has figured out what would be best. Why don't we take a vote and everyone give a logical place that would be good for them (ie not your hometown but a good place you can get to). Then we will get the top three or so places and see where the most people can go to and put our best efforts into that. I would be willing to tally votes and the such but I am leaving for spring break. If anyone else thinks this will work and wants to take care of it it would be great because the largest number of us could be involved when we know what we all want. Personaly, I have to go for something on the east coast if we get this going. Jill

Sean- I know that Mike Varney wasn't posting, I just couldn't think of a better subject title. As for Shrapnel's catalog, personally speaking, the shredding of Neoclassical metal doesn't do it for me, OR, I just haven't heard enough -good- neoclassical guitarists. The only Shrapnel artists are the ones who appeared in GuiterFTPM like 4 years ago, when I read that magazine. Now-a-days, I don't read it, and no longer see the ads for it. Speaking of Magna Carta and whether or not they are involved with Shrapnel (or vice versa), in alot of Magna Carta releases the bands thank both Pete Morticelli (president of Magna Carta) and Mike Varney (pres of Shrapnel, I'd imagine). Go figure. Like I said, I'm willing to hear some of Shrapnel's catalog, but my money's to tight to just go out and pick something up that *might* be a poor Yngwie rip off. Well, now that we've got that all taken care of....why DID Dream Theater eliminate that cool middle part to ACOS, the neoclassical bit we've been talking about? I think it's really great, especially the drums and keys. REMINDER - THought Industry will be seen in Madison tonight by me finally!! I'll give you all (even the one guy that can't get a grasp on TI) later. ____________________________________

Whoah! I know this dream thread has died off, but I had to tell of my dream this morning. John M, John P and Mike P were guests at my house, and my Mum made them dinner (I think it was meatloaf). They were great, but whenever I tried to get them to sign my Images And Words I couldn't find a pen, or we had to go out, etc. They left without signing it, of course. Maybe it was the meatloaf?

I've had a lot to think about the last week or so. Things churn up in your mind every so often and ya just gotta get it all out... First off, if Iron Maiden is coming to your town, go see them. They put on a fantastic show and its great to see a NWOBHM band who've influenced so much of the other stuff I listen to. The concert was spiritually satisfying in a way. I'm a music student and sometimes when I'm mired under 15 credits of music theory, ear training, guitar lessons, philosophy, homework, piano, sight singing, tendonitis bla bla bla, (you get the idea) its easy to forget where I came from and what I really love doing. I love being in a band and creating my own music. Iron Maiden reminded me that they are a big part of my musical roots and why I play guitar. Its not for spending money on an institution or the piece of paper they'll give me when I'm dome. It's for the love of music. Never forget your roots, it can save your sanity. Often people forget that music is an art form. No textbook can say what is right or wrong, only give you guidelines. We had a speaker here last week, the conductor a symphony in Washington. I can't remember his name. He talked about the status of classical music in today's society. Much of the decline in it's popularity is the fault of the performers and conductors who've said 'if you don't like my art, then I don't care'. You can _never_ think of one art form as better than another, only different. Whether you like it or not depends on your perspective. He also said that it's partly the consumers fault as well. Societies that try to control or supress art often die. This has happened at various times in history. The Romans and Macedonians are examples of this. ART CONAINS THE SOUL OF A CULTURE. If the soul dies, the body goes with it. Another point made was that there is a fundamental bias in today's education system against art. We are taught in a polarized system all our lives (at least in the western world, especially in the US). Everything is right or wrong, left or right, up or down, black or white. There is no room for the gray areas, but there is precisely where art (including music) MUST exist. Otherwise there is no point; OTHERWISE THERE IS NO ART. The gray is what makes art personal. It's fine not to like something, but to say it's not as good as something else and to take your belief as fact is wrong. Opinions are fine, but putting someone else's down for no reason other than to better yourself is not. Arguing about an idea or concept is good as long as you keep an open mind. POV Without different opinions, ideas and beliefs the world would be far to homogenized for my liking. The never ending presence of change keeps life interesting. So what if a band's music changes. If you don't like it, don't listen. Listen to what you do like, you're entitled to it. I hope those of you out there who pray Dream Theater's music doesn't change too much are not the same people who knock Yngwie for staying somewhat the same or Rush for playing synths. It would seem kind of hypocritical to me.
Remember what the bard said- "Nothing is either good nor bad, only thinking makes it so"

They are way behind on the Fates News since they just talk about Chasing Time as if it wasn't out yet. Nothing on the new album.
