Did you all hear that MTV is going to come out with another cable station
that will supposedly focus on "music." I guess even they realize that
people do complain about not seeing more music videos. Lets hope that
they will offer some programs that will appeal to us ytsejamers musical
    tastes.

Do any other Jammers want to tell me info on Braindance? My roommate
tells me that DT reminds him of them. One Jammer wrote me about them but
I forget who it was...sorry, thanks though.

P.S. My roommate despises DT by the way, because his mind is narrow.

OK, bafu. You compared me to the mighty raptor, so I guess I have to
    respond...

I'm sure there are "screwed over by a guy" songs, but I don't listen to any
so I can't give you an example. And I sure as hell wouldn't write one!
I've heard enough of everyone's opinion on the matter of "screwed over"
songs, so can we just forget I even used those words on the Jam? Hell,
this is getting as bad as the gay issue!

Regarding Queen...someone wrote about another Queen song being in a movie.
I believe the song was "One Vision" or "One World"...or something like that
and the movie had alot of jetfighters in it. :)

Oh yes there are (unfortunate for us nice guys ;). Have you heard
that Allanis Morisette song? Talk about a "screwed over by a guy song."
That's only one example. Unfortunately, my mind isn't exactly the clearest
at the moment, so I can't think of tto many examples. I do agree about "Lie"
baing a "screwed over by a chick" song, though. That's how I've always taken
it. I never really took the line about "two more coming" as being about the
Second Coming" either. I never took it as being about having children, but
that makes more sense to me than the Second Coming idea (especially
considering the context of the meaning of the song). Some people just
    interpret things differently.
I just saw Maiden last night in St. Louis, and I must say that it was
a friggin' AWESOME show. I waited outside, in the cold (stupid me with no
    jacket and a short-sleeved T-Shirt) for something like 2 1/2 hours before
thye opened the doors, but it was definitely worth the wait. Heck, it was
even worth the wait through Fear Factory (I don't really care all that much
for them, but that's okay if you do) and some idiots in the crowd. I was no
more than 5 feet away from Dave Murray and Steve Harris most of the night.
Murray even noticed the Red Dwarf T-Shirt I was wearing and pointed at it
with a big grin on his face at one point. Anyway, since this is a DT list
and not a Maiden one, i'll shut up about the show, but if any of you all want
to talk about it, mail me and we'll chat. God bless you all.

Point of clarification: If two albums are tied for #3, then the next two

    >also, primus opened for rush on the "roll the bones" tour.

Primus also opened for Rush on the "Counterparts" tour. Les played a
riff from "A Passage to Bangkok" in one of the Primus songs in Cleveland.

    >Just because someone went to Berklee it doesn't mean that they are the

Exactly. Excluding members Dream Theater, how many of your favorite
musicians went to Berklee? I could only think of Branford Marsalis, Will
    Calhoun, and Steve Vai.

    >P.S. In my opinion, Dream Theater should be up for a Grammy.

Visit both schools. Talk extensively with admissions, financial
aid, faculty, and students. I once considered going to Berklee, but I
was afraid that if music didn't work out, I'd be screwed. Luckily, I
opted to go to a state school, and now I am a political science major.

    >all music has had an equal representation. (maybe sometimes 'trends'
    >were weighed more than 'non-trends')

Sorry, Mojoman, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. While most
music has had an equal representation, not all of it has. When was the
last time you saw a black artist on eMpTyV's Unplugged? When was the
last time you saw something besides alternative, rap, or bad TV shows on
MTV? There are many different types of music out there, and some can
only be seen on PBS. Even if there were channels for all types of
music, there still wouldn't be equal representation. I'll agree with
you on trends, however. Hopefully the current trends will subside
    soon. Popularity is cyclical anyway.

    >Warrant's "Cherry Pie" is sophmoric and crude, but a fun assed song! If
    >you'd bother to listen to their last 2 discs before ranting...

Okay, the discussion about various Jammers' musical tastes has been
taken care of. A post about Warrant on a "list for fans of Dream Theater,
and related topics (related topics include other progressive metal
    bands)" is absolutely not necessary.

    >My name's Brandon, and I'm the drummer for Colorado's hottest new
progressive rock band - Anthem. (Can you guess who are influences are?)

Wow! There' a progressive rock scene in Colorado? What other bands are
there? As for your influences, my guess is Francis Scott Key.

    >First off, does anyone have Faith No More's most recent album? I want
    >to get it but haven't heard it yet. How does it compare to The Real Thing

I bought the album (and then saw them live) because of some of the buzz I
read on this list. Get it. I like it better than than Introduce
Yourself and the 2 aforementioned albums. It's a really diverse,
    schizophrenic album.

    >music of, say, Nirvana, and not want to beat the fuck out of the
    >idiot-mentality that spawned all of that shit and polluted the radio and
    >tv airwaves with it for years. I'm sorry, the "I'm angry at the world so
    >I can act like a retard" punk mentality just doesn't do it for me. If
    >you want to express anger, do it in a REMOTELY intelligent way... hmm,
    >Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera...

I like DT, King Crimson, Rush, AND Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Foo
    Fighters. I don't see a problem with that. I don't like confining
myself to one type of music. If you only listen to one type of music,
you'll end up learning everything about nothing. Diversity is the key.
As far as metal bands, the "I'm angry at the world so I can act
like a retard" punk mentality is exactly what they're about. I don't
think I'll find Shakespeare or Ayn Rand references in any metal bands
anytime soon. Don't get me wrong, Metallica was a way of life during my
junior high years. I can't stand Megadeth (Mustaine sounds like the
young girl duck in Darkwing Duck) and Pantera is a bunch of dumb
wankers. But that's just my opinion.

No doubt. Concerts are the most cathartic experiences for me. Except
when I dislocated my shoulder at a Helmet concert. And don't forget the
    ear plugs or noise reducers.

    Subject: Yes, Yngwie Rules!
    Message-ID: <313E5116.30BB@northnet.org>

    Hey!
I hanven't really posted in a while, but today, the spores of Juffo-Wup
surge within my tissues and I grow weary of contemplating the meaning of my
existance in relationship to Corn Flakes. A discussion ensues:
Well, I saw someone post about Yngwie Malmsteen. I'll tell you one thing
right now, the guy RULES! I am not pulling a "My Favorite Guitar Player is
GOD" thread here, either. I don't know why people dislike his playing. That
"He repeats the same riff" argument is a pile of steaming B.S. as well. I
mean, would I be right in saying that John Petrucci sucks because "He uses
add 9 chords all the time"? Or suggest a lynching of Alex Lifeson because he
"Uses that damn groovy rhythmic thing too much?" (These three Masters are,
in fact, my favorite players and my musical 'idols')
How many people who flaut their "Yngwie Sucks" signs can actually play
like him? It's not about speed, either. I mean, if you dedicate yourself
and practice like mad, you can get those sextuplets at 120BPM. It's about
artistic talent. Yngwie is one of the most talented, creative musicians I've
ever heard. So, considering this, the people who criticize Yngwie must
either be 1.)Not speaking from experience. (I.E.-They got all they'll ever
need to know from reading Guitar World)
2.)Jealous. That's right, jealous. Maybe they tried to play "Far Beyond the
Sun" and realized that the man is on a totally different (Higher) level of
    playing.
Don't get me wrong here. I know how it is. You practice and write and
practice some more, and you're thinking "I can play ANYTHING!", and then you
sit down and try to compare to someone like Petrucci or Malmsteen. And you
get your socks knocked off. Take it as a lesson and learn from it, don't
shun it away and hate everything.
Well, that's my 2 cents on that. Secondly, I saw a post about
Type-O-Negative. Yes, the singer is a Gargantuan Mass of Seething Gothic
Mayhem. I saw them open for Queensryche. I mean, I'm really not a big fan
of their music. In concert, the singer had to grab his larynx and wiggle it
with his hand to achieve vibrato! (No shit!) But, they do have a sense of
    humor.
And, finally, one last thing. The Star Control games are the best computer
games ever created. I am serious. Right now, you can pick up Star Control I
and II on CD for about $15.00. (MS-DOS) If you're a Sci-Fi fan, buy it. And
play it like mad. Star Control III is comming out in June. Check it out on
your web browser. (Just type 'Star Control III' in the search query). I
don't work for Accolade or anything, its just that I know that this list is
full of creative people. Many are musicians/artists and we all love DT. And
nothing makes me want to go up and write music or listen DT like a good blast
of imagination. And that's exactly what these games do, put the right side
    of the brain into overdrive!
       Alrighty, see you all later!

Well, I just found out last night that Dream Theater music is extremely
conducive to good C++ coding. Any similar experiences? (I don't know if I
can speak for plotting marginal-cost curves, though...)

Something entirely unrelated... you wouldn't think so, but odd-numbered
time signatures and head-banging CAN IN FACT MIX, but only if you really
know the song. I saw Pantera on New Year's Eve this past break, and I'll
tell you, there's nothing funnier than seeing people try to headbang to the
7/8 verses of "I'm Broken"... first they're on the downbeats, then they
find themselves on the upbeats...! They usually end up just sort of
shaking their hair around in confusion...

But there's a quiet satisfaction in being able to headbang right in time
with those odd meters. I keep wondering how I'd handle the beginning of
"The Mirror" at a concert. (Or any of the many spots where Portnoy feels
the need to slide into 6/8 while the rest of the band plays in 4)

BTW, were any Texas Jammers at that Pantera show?

Also, my brother and I claim the booty-shaking funk version of "Pull Me
Under" and "Lie" for the DT tribute tape, if it ever comes together.

I'm personally looking forward to the first Progressive Rap group. Biatch.
(Is it possible to grind in 9/8?)

Gen X??? When I was 18 (six yrs ago), I remember reading that Gen X
encompassed anyone from 18-30 yrs of age. Now, it refers to people
who are barely teenagers? (no offense, Ytse-Ben, you got the cool
'tude, which is what _really_ matters). It's funny that their music
is written and played by people that are 10-15 yrs older than they.
I guess it was no different in the '80s...

Anyone who likes those bands should go out and buy Death's _Symbolic_.
They are better musicians than the above 3 (don't slag me, 'tallica
is my 3rd favorite band). I think they're doing what Metallica should've
done after the Black album (if that were possible for them). They are
heavier than Pantera, and they have some really beautiful lead guitar
melodies. Plus, the rhythm section annihilates anything in its path !>[>

Actually, it looks like something off the cover of Douglas Adam's _Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy_ (I think).

Maybe they dropped it from the studio 'cause they didn't want to sound
like Yngwie. BTW Ryan- sorry if I came off a little strong before.

Karri- Didn't Queen to a song for Flash Gordon (can't remember the name
    though)

    Sincerely,

I played the Paradise. It has the greatest decorations, but it was the
last time my old band ever played together, so it brings back some bad memories.
My new band just got its first gig at Fugly's on Simms in the
Littleton area on March 24. C'ya there.
My favorite DT song is Lie. It shows that DT can be heavy and
complex at the same time. Something few new bands can do. That and the
    lyrics make it a masterpiece.
There is a guitar solo in Erotomania that is very similar to the
solo in Scarred. What does Erotomania mean anyway? And while I'm at it,
what does Urotsukidoji mean? Testament is pretty hard. Pick up The Ritual.
It shows off their talent for playing ballads. Return to Serenity is the
greatest metal ballad out there that I own.

    Later,
    Cory
