It was my belief that "The Mirror" was about an individual (the narrator
-- Mike Portnoy???) who cheats on his wife/girlfriend and then looks back on
it remorsefully and thankful that she (the wife/girlfriend) has taken him
back. Read the lyrics to the song again with my theory in mind... it makes a
    lot of sense.

I apologize for the non-DT content, but I just read something in one of
the digests that bothered me. It was the reference to this year's
Lollapalooza and what will happen when the metal crowd meets the
"alternative" crowd. It really disturbs me that Soundgarden is being
considered alternative. Now, I'm not one for catagorizing musical
artists in the first place (and I'm sure that I'm opening myself up to
all kinds of flames), but, if Soundgarden is going to be catagorized, I
would rather people realize that they are more hard rock or metal than
alternative. All you have to do is listen to "Badmotorfinger" to tell
that. I know that they don't really want to be looked at any one way,
which is why each album is different. And from what I've heard of the
new album, this one will be different from it's predecessors, too.

    Dear guys,

Hey there! I'm at home right now, and I hate to say this, but I wasn't
able to get to Derek's house, but he is definitely aware of what is going
on. Anyways, I do have his phone number, so I'll give him a call soon.

One possible change I might make....I might make the ytsecon at the end of
August, so I'll have time to work with the New Jersey Convention Bureau
plus make plans with my dad's friend who is a travel agent, he'll be able
to make package deals with the airlines/hotel/convention center/etc.
Also, sooner or later I'll start shopping for sponsers. The reason I want
to make these changes is that I want to make this thing BIG, I mean REALLY
BIG. The good thing about having the convention at the end of August is
that the band will be coming out with their new album at that time. This
will be a good way for them to promote their album, and I'll have more
time to make this thing really big. This will be good for them, as well
as any other Dream Theater fan who would like to see them. So, if this
thing actually happens the way I want it too, everyone will get something
    out of it.

Phil, you mentioned that it would be better if it were near Penn
Station. THe problem that I'm most concerned about regarding that is
"money". It'll be a lot cheaper in New Jersey, and it's is still pretty
convenient to have it out there, even though it'd be great to have it in
the city. But, I think that it's still a great idea, if we had the
money. Hey, what do you expect from a bunch of college guys? =)

So, I think a couple of more months to plan this plus be able to work
with management, travel agent, convention bureau, hotels, convention
center, things will turn out better and more according to plan.

This would be great if the convention was like a week before the release
date of their album. I'll try to contact people and make calls starting
tomorrow, unless you guys want me to change everything and leave it at
the end of June. But, in my opinion, the end of August will be better.
    Let me know!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

P.S. I might have to start dividing the work a lot more (i.e. someone
call Convention people, management, travel agent, etc.) I'll definitely
work with management and the travel agent, unless someone else would like
to take one of those responsibilities? =)

As for other songs in other songs, Pull Me Under is in TTT at about 3:xx (It
might be some other time, I don't remember right now.) in one of JP's solos.
The chord is slightly different, but the general sound is there.

The combination of keyboard and guitar play the intro to Voices at 1:23 to
1:42. The sound is more harsh than the mellow tone JP plays at the Voices
intro. But, if you listen, it's the same progression in melody. Then, there
is a guitar solo. Then, from 2:11 to 2:39, there is a part where the piano
plays the main melody, and this, (IMO), sounds very "Voices"-ish.

    1. Mike Portnoy was mentioned in an article about Billy Sheehan in the April

In regards to the Symbol guy who used to be Prince....he used to be
compared to Jimi Hendrix all the time in guitar mags. That was a Long Time
    Ago, though.

I'm Also In COMPLETE agreement with Bafu in regards to Non-DT content. I
just saw another list that I'm on go to S$$T because too many people got
pissy about content. Dream Theater is between albums...and there's not a
helluva lot to be said right now. Unless of course, you WANT this list to
    degenerate into blatherings consisting of...
                       1) They're great.
                       2) No, you s%%thead, they're fuckin' great!
                       3) I'm a lurker and I Agree with everything...
                       4) YES...We've FINALLY DONE IT!!! We've successfully
dissected every microsecond of every DT cd in existence...and have found
all those pesky production errors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, when's the
next one due???? (Big self congratulatory slap on the back!!!) (Grin
    folks, I'm just kiddin')

PUH-LEEZE!!!! This list is great. Let's keep it that way!!!!

As far as the YtseCons are concerned....maybe folks should get together and
make some long term plans. Spread 'em around abit. This year, Vegas and
Jersey...Next year Chicago, San Fran and New York....etc....then maybe a
few of us that aren't doing so well financially at the moment could make
some concrete plans to SAVE enough money to make it to one!

The Colorado Scene....Actually, Cory, you might be too young to remember
this...but back in the '80s there were a few good bands around...and a
surprising number were Progressive. That was Yesterday though....

Sig wars.....what's a good war without a Viking horde to mix things up abit?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

damn. We kinda had/have the opposite problem down here. We got a
station that claims to be "Real Rock Radio" yet i'm constantly hearing
all this other crap, you can guess. Anyways me and a bud called up a
dj and asked if she could play some DT. (Theres yer DT content:) She
told us she loves DT but she doesnt decide what goes on the air. ?!
ok i can understand they need to play "whats popular" a little so they
can make some dough, but it was getting really bad for a while. We
started calling up their comments line and bitching at them every so
often. I stopped listening to the radio COMPLETELY for the last
several months. To my surprise when i flipped it on today on the way
to pick up some lumber I heard old Van Halen! As well as some other
cool stuff including this one collective soul song i really dug.
Things are starting to look better guys, keep a lookout ;)

I was a psych major once too......I've been noticing more and more Psych
majors popping up on the jam. By the way...if you want to be a
psychiaTRIST you might want to double major in Biology/Psychology with a
minor in Chemistry and then try like hell to keep your grades up there...it
sucks but Med schools are sort of picky that way. By the by...you might
want to take Chemistry anyway....nothing firm yet...but PsycholoGISTS might
be able to prescribe drugs in the future....so if you want to be able to do
so....get a good grasp of Psychopharmacology (whew) NOW.

Compulsory musical content.....I caught the Testament/Annihilator tour a
few years back.....AWESOME. Testament was tight..tight...tight despite
being forced to perform in of all things a ROLLERSKATING joint! Very nice
meet and greet afterwards...and Annihilator was nice enough to share their
pizza.....Damn, I wish I still had friends in college radio!

Pat, Keep posting it !!!!! Let those of us see who the bad traders
    are.

There is a guy I'm just about ready to post openly about who has owed
    me a
dub of Ytsecon #1 since last year, but I'm gonna wait just a little bit
    longer.
I sent him a videotape and seven dollars CASH and all I have received
    from him
is about 4 EXCUSES why he hasn't sent me my tape back.
First he was in a play and working a lot of overtime.
    Then his TV fried.
Then his VCR fried shortly afterwards.
Then he got everything fixed and would send me the tape that week.
That last piece of Email I got from him was in early December '95.

I've been extremely patient but this is getting rediculous. Just put
    the two
tapes in the vcr's and hit play on one and record on the other and take
    it
    to the post office. Done.

I didn't think a fellow Ytsejammer would scam me but it looks like that
    was
the case. I just send him another piece of mail this morning so I will
    wait
a week and then if no reply or another bad excuse, I will post his name
    and
maybe that will get him off his ass or at least embarrass him.

Anyone else willing to dub me a copy of Ytsecon #1 ??

    greetings, all.
first off, I'd like to apologize for my last post. I'm sure only one peron on
the whole 'jam understood the inside joke.
I probably came off as just another dumb AOL me-too fuck.
But not to worry. When I switch off AOL this summer, I will immediately
become 10 times cooler. |^) (sarcastic grin)
You'll see a lot of us AOLers switching to local BBS's, all thanks to Mr.
    Steve "I-think-censoring-the-internet-will-greatly-improve-the
morals-of-young-children-in-our-society" Case, who has decided to raise the
rates yet again. All you college guys have it made.

Finally I get to post, after catching up with the 40+ digests in storage,
which for some strange reason I feel obligated to read in order. I've gotten
much better at speed reading, though.

    anyway, enough complaining.

------about that DT/Rush thing- that would certainly be a big step forward
    for both bands, especially DT.
A few years ago, I attended one of those Rush/Primus shows in Peoria, IL,
where Rush alone filled a good sized arena.(BTW, any Peoria jammers out
    there? just curious.)
If DT were to tour with Rush, it could mean some larger venues for DT in
    the US.
Just think- in a few years.....BAM! DT at Madison Square Garden!

    other stuff......
anyone know when the lollapalooza tour dates come out? I'm gonna have to
plan my summer schedule around it when it comes to Dallas.

about those DT hats- why not design one that just has the majesty symbol
on it and nothing else(maybe a quote on the back)? It would certainly get
other people to ask what it means, thus introducing them to DT and gathering
    new fans everywhere!
        .....then again, maybe not.
back to Primus again. Anyone else think their sound is really changing for
the worse in the last two albums? They still kick ass, of course, but I just
seem to like their old sound better.
                            sorry about all the questions.
       well, gotta go.

I just read on the 'jam some guys talking about some dudes making shadow
dogs, picking noses, etc.., during one of the shows. I don't know where
you were, but I was strangling Derek, and making forms on James's shirt
during the second El'nGee show over X-mas!!! How about that!! :)
