This short piece is in response to the recent flood of posts complaining
about how there are too many "outside topics" on this mailing list. It was
sent in a few months ago, but I still think it has relevancy. (and no, I

Alternative music. From what I can tell, just by virtue of it's
popularity, Alternative is anything but. In the literal sense,
Progressive music is probably the most alternative music there is right
now when you consider the radio play and mtv play it gets.

I was watching VH1 when there was a special by Symbol Guy (Prince)
and it occured to me that no one ever mentions him as a guitar talent.
So the guy's a little wacky; he still happens to be an incredible
talent. I strongly believe that if Jimi Hendrix were alive today this
is the kind of thing he would be doing now. Prince doesn't get much
radio play anymore, but he rocks as much as the next guy. Flame me all
you want, but IMO Prince can match ANYBODY currently playing the guitar
today. Yes that means Vai, Yngwie, and JP. I'm NOT saying he's better
or worse, just that he's right up there though. When you think about
it, Progressive music and Funk really aren't that far apart musically
    anyway. Just one person's opinion.

Shields up, Mr. Sulu; prepare for flaming!

    Hey jammers,

I've got some tour dates for a mega-kick-ass band.

    Overkill

3/27 Poughkeepsie, NY 4/6 Detroit, MI
3/28 Boston, MA 4/11 Wichita, KS
3/29 Old Bridge, NJ 4/12 Cedar Rapids, IA
3/30 Huntington, NY 4/18 Cincinnati, OH
4/1 Syracuse, NY 4/19 Toledo, OH
4/2 Moosic, PA 4/20 Columbus, OH
4/3 Altoona, PA 4/21 Springfield, VA
4/4 Pittsburgh, PA 4/26 Cohoes, NY
    4/5 Cleveland, OH

I got these off a pretty cool homepage.

To Steve Borzilleri (I hope I remembered the spelling ok):

Testament already has a song about destroying a city (pouring gasoline
over it and lighting) -- it's called "Apocalyptic City" from their first
LP The Legacy. If you're just getting into Testament, try out The Legacy
and The New Order -- their first 2 albums. Practice What You Preach and
The Ritual are pretty cool, too, but not quite as intense as the first
two (IMO) -- Souls of Black disappointed me a little.

Zack -- while you are recommending DEATH, how about INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT
PATTERNS? That's one of the most intense LPs I've ever heard!!
Symbolic's pretty cool, too, but I think I.T.P. is more intense. BTW, if
anyone has any info. on DEATH touring in the Northeast, please post it or
    e-mail me.

Any results on the D.T. favorite song poll? (Apologies if it's been
posted and I missed it). I agree with Ben Lassaude -- THE MIRROR kicks
ass (slightly a little more ass than most all of the other D.T. songs
(which all kick ass in their own way) IMO)!!!

            Hi everyone!

There would be an update out today, except that my PC is taking a
nice huge dump on me this week. Worry not for your orders; my hard drive
is fine, it's the motherboard that's screwed. I'm likely to have this
fixed in under a week, at which time it's likely you'll see a CD update.
I'm calling in off a dumb terminal, and this really sucks.

In other news... Antiquities is t-minus just under 3 weeks to
shipping, so sayeth the suppliers. Could be sooner if they get off their
ass and actually do some work at the printshop... I've done my part...

As most of you know Scoobacca (featuring the humble ME on bass)
is playing two huge parties (free) on 3/9/96 and 3/16/96 at the same
large house in Chandler, AZ... e-mail me if you're in the greater Phoenix
area (or will be) and need directions.

Update on Spring Break. I'm going out of town with the band from
3/11/96 to 3/15/96, and in all probability will break my leg skiing. I'll
catch up with the backlog of mail when I get back, but in the meantime,
do not be alarmed by the sudden silence on my end of the line.

Ytsecon vote: Vegas. I'd rather it be Phoenix because I live
there, but Vegas is where all the cheaper plane tickets go to. There's
also ample facilities. There's a reason many conventions are in Vegas. :)

I'm issuing sort of a clarion-call to everyone in the continental
USA who ordered WDATU. With the exception of maybe 15 more packets that I
have to send out, I think I took care of everyone in the first 500.
Please e-mail me if you're still waiting for yours if you live in the US
and I will attempt to remedy the situation. Most international orders
have been sent... I have about a dozen to go. But those can take some
time to arrive, so don't panic yet if you do not have it...

Antiquities and Scenes ordering is going great! The reservations
and paid orders are accumulating at a frightening pace, and there are
still plenty of copies available. (after all, 500 is no small number when
you're counting in ones and twos). If you're interested in these CDs or
want more info, please e-mail me or stop by Jeff Chew's Lifting Shadows
    web page.

            Take care all!

to the guy who said metal is nothing but whining and being pissed at the
    world:

try listening to DEATH's "symbolic" or MY DYING BRIDE's "the angel and
the dark river", and then we'll see if you talk about how matel is
mindless. both bands have incredible musicianship (my dying bride has a
violinist, not to mention one of the most expressive violinist i've ever
heard) and my dying bride's lyrics read like shakespeare, so do your
research before you make blanket statements like that. i respect that
you claim to "not limit yourself to one type of music". i don't either.
but to immediately start bashing another genre of music right after you
say that is hypocritical at best.

I hate the fact that Alice In Chains and Soundgarden are pulled into the
whole "grunge"scene. THEY ARE METAL and very talented. After all, the were
around before Nirvana and whatever were popular, so why are they grunge?
Because they are from Seattle? WTF? That would make Bafu Vai and my beloved

You know, i had a whole reponse written up, and I can see that this guy is
joking. Waht the hell is he trying to say? He loves DT, but he thinks they
shoud go alt. He says DT isn't popular anymore. He thinks we should talk
about other things, but he subscribes to the list I think that from this
point on, anything theis guy says should be ignored, because he isn't even
flame-worthy. And john Arch thought I was a troublemaker!

You mean it's that green dottie thing? I thought it didn't have any eyes...

    >>Exactly. Excluding members Dream Theater, how many of your favorite

    >erotomania is an unhealthy romantic obsession with another individual (I

That makes sense... so then it could taken as if during 'Erotomania' the
person has an unhealthy sexual relationship which then causes him to get
confused ands have doubts(Voices)... and then I still haven't figured out
    what TSM is about...anybody know??
